- For the men in the navies of the warring nations in Europe, there was nothing phony about WW2 in October 1939 - mortal danger was immediately under the cold surface at the receiving end of a torpedo or a depth charge...

Just curious if you are of Polish descent? Even if not, thank you for shining light on what the Nazis and Socialists did to the Poles. It was inhuman. My grandma was a Pole and she despised both the Nazis and the Russians. People focus only on the plight of the Jews and forget, the Nazis tried to exterminate Polish Catholics too by the millions. Thank you for your important work and God bless.

"Think of your life 2 months ago. Has it changed this much since then?" This comment didn't age well...
Damn it you beated me by one hour! lolll
Yeah, although 1939 still decisively beats 2020 in that regard, especially in Poland (in the worst possible sense obviously).
@@Artur_M. There still 6 months left in 2020!
Why do you have to tempt FATE? 😨😱
The coronavirus is a minor change compared to the complete destruction of your homes, the massacre of your people with those remaining becoming basically serfs.
With money cigarettes and whiskey :-D
My favorites
More than the US government gave out as stimulus. I want some whiskey.
The important things in life.
I too want to be dropped off on Gotland with money, cigs and whiskey :D ...i dont smoke, but you can always trade the cigs!
It's kind of funny now, but it shows a little bit of humanity in one of the darkest periods of the 20th century. The crew *had* to get out of Estonia, since it wasn't exactly a safe place for them to be in the long run. To do that, they had to either kill or briefly capture the two men set to guard them.
Ultimately, though, the guards weren't some hated enemy. They were just two people from a country that wasn't even at war with their own, who were probably barely even adults and who happened to be in that position through the decision of someone else. So, after capturing them through force, they not only released them but also gave them a little cash to support themselves until they could get home, along with what consolation gifts they had aboard the submarine. There was probably an element of "sending a message" that they intended no harm, of course, but there's also the fact that...well, they really didn't.
It's definitely a bright spot in a war so characterized by its atrocities. They had an opportunity to either be cruel or show basic decency, and they opted for the latter.
Poor Poland, it took the worsr of the war since the very beginning.
The submarine stories were really interesting to hear!
Thank you for this series. ✨
Indy's ending words here are chilling considering what was to happen only a couple years later
Did someone make a film about that Polish submarine? And if not, WHY the hell not?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eagle_(1959_film)
@@jewoGRFS ua-cam.com/video/Ug46ylXEshc/v-deo.html , and old one but with English subs, just fragments :(
@@ghut487 When you say "subs" do you mean submarines or subtitles?
@@nymalous3428 ;) subtitels are English. The submarine is Polish :)
Did you here the joke about the polish mine detectors? Covering their ears and stomping the ground?
"How much has my life changed in two months." Wow rewatching this episode in 2020 that hit close to home.
2022 and is still the same
And now its getting even scarier
As someone with the anglicized surname Orzell, that submarine segment was really cool. Also orzeł means ‘eagle’ in the polish language so pretty badass name but I might be biased. Keep up the great work Indy and crew!
Thank you!
"Madness..." You sum it up brilliantly. This is a great channel, with great writers and a great presenter. What you're doing here, as with the 'The Great War', is gift to history.
Keeping me on my toes with a mid-century style tie. The right kind of bad. 4/5
Thanks for talking about Orsel. That incident was used by USSR to force military bases on Estonia.
An added tidbit about the Orzel incident. When the Estonian guards were released with food and clothes, they were given 50 USD each, as the Polish crew believed that those "returning from the underworld deserve to travel first class only".
Wow.
Those crew members on the Orzel were fking badass.
I'm here after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. I would say things have changed quite a lot in 2 months.
April 2022
how does the people of donbass feel about being murderd by kiev regime since 2014?
10:40 "Think of your life 2 months ago..." Well, with the quarantine and the riots, life has changed quite a bit. I think we're doing better than Poland was, but things aren't looking good.
I think part of the problem is that too many have forgotten what has gone before, they don't know history, they don't understand the kinds of terrible things people can do. I am grateful for the efforts of this channel to prevent the past from slipping away, even for its own sake, but also for the lessons it holds for us.
Really? You're comparing protests against racism and oppression that come with some acts of looting to a fascist power subjugating another country and committing war crimes?
Yes indeed, I can see that history hasn't really been learned.

Thank you so much for this series.. what a brilliant concept and truly well researched. For someone who is interested about the war, to be able to follow this series in REAL TIME, and to be able to expect new weekly content for the next THREE YEARS.. Thank you doesn't feel sufficient! Awesome stuff!!!
Thank you for your support!!
Overpower me, drag me aboard a sub and subject me to kidnapping with depth charge attacks. Then drop me off on an island belonging to another nation. Give me whiskey?...we're good!
Better than being murdered like the Germans were accusing.
As the tale goes, the Orzeł's crew decided that _"Men coming back from the dead deserve to travel by the first class!"_
I have read about the war all my 60 some years and thought I covered most of it but your videos are teaching me more and in a fun format.
I use these videos for book recommendations so often.
im so glad i found this channel i found the week by week breakdowns of ww1 first and i learned so much and now this im in heaven! I hope other wars will be covered like this in the future. I absolutely love the very deep dives into the wars that changed the world and continue to shape it to this day. thank you for this amazing content.
Happy to see the advertisements are working again.
Just started watching these. So clever an idea.

Fantastic episode!
Thank you guys so much for covering both wars like you have. I’ve spent hundreds of hours watching your videos. Utmost love and respect from Michigan.

going back to watch the entire series again. Improvements noticed and they're real. Good job, guys (I call everyone guys, no slight intended to Astrid...we know who the queen is).

‘The Nazis: A Warning From History’ has an episode devoted to how Frank, Greiser and Forster governed the three regions is very different ways. Worth a watch.
That's Part 4: "The Wild East." Very good documentary.
Rewatching all these again,
Welcome back Rex, and be sure to stay tuned through the end of the war, whenever that may be!
I’d say the world has changed quite a bit in the last month, not to scale with this but still.
its row-syth, haha cool to see my area make its way into these
excellent..everyone should watch

47 seconds in, holding the map...Indy...are you a time traveller?
Dear past Indy Neidell,
Five and a half months ago, the world witnessed a high profile assasination that we thought were comparable to that of the Archduke.
Three months ago, a large scale pandemic not seen since 1918 hit my country. In a Muslim-majority country like Indonesia, we know things get serious when even Friday prayers get cancelled.
Two months ago should have been a state university admissions test. The test is usually taken by at least 700.000 people each year, sometimes close to a million. It has since got repeatedly postponed.
Three weeks ago, life slowly resumes. And with that so do the tiny stuffs that live in people's cells that does not serve the interest of the person it lives in. I heard you were hit by that stuff too.
At least, we made it to today.
On a quietest night in the darkest hour, THE KRIEGSMARINE APPEAR!
Today is the never ending undercard while we wait for the main event
i would like to be left in Gotland with money, cigarettes and whiskey .Especially in summer !
A "pardon" for crimes against humanity is itself a crime. 😒
What is the music in this video?
3:47 Well, also the captain had Estonian connections, people he knew from his service in the Imperial Russian Navy
"Hitler pardoned everyone who committed war crimes. So, they should be okay there."
-Might be an understatement.
who is he talking to on the phone when he’s not presenting??
This is the best like to dislike ratio I've ever seen.
I miss dislike stats
I mean, sure they let the guards go eventually, but I wonder how they treated them on board.
And what the guards had to face back home.
Well, there are many hints, in diaries, that Estonians knew abaut planned escape. Guards ware just invited inside. What happened then? The gift of alcohol suggests that hangover was the biggest threat for them.
nice
Omfg they need to do a movie on the polish submarine Orzell ...That is an INCREDIBLE story of how they survived!!!!!!!

Why doesnt he ever say goodbye on the phone? bit rude.
Bro...Sabaton NEEDS to tell this tale.
RIGHT?!?
Trust me, I've already suggested it to Indy, but now I'm going to do it again because I have your support, lol.
Also, fun fact, I always listen to Sabaton when replying to your guys' comments. Right now I have "Uprising" playing.
- T.J.
@@WorldWarTwo Holy cow didn't expect to get a response, much less from you guys lol. Welp I'll give the ol' obligatory, y'all are doing a great job, and keep it up.
Yeah, keep up the suggestion. Even as a one off, I think they'd knock this story out of the park. Especially if they keep the same style they had in their last album. Cheers!
Hey thanks for the support, Caveman! We really do work hard to read all the comments, even if we don't always have time to respond, so there is a pretty good chance that any comment you leave will get seen. Even Indy and Sparty dive in to comment back from time to time!
And yeah, I completely agree with you. Sabaton has done a fair amount of songs about Polish history and they always go over really well. This story in particular though almost seems tailor-made for them. It's a Polish submarine fighting against the odds in a daring escape from the Nazis and Soviets, and also a story that seemingly no one knows about. Prime Sabaton right there.
- T.J.
5:33 wasnt this coveted?
I wonder why he picks up and then puts down that phone in the beginning of the episode.
is this the reason why some humans wake up from vibrating phones? not just "because of this one occasion", in history, but, something similar? (sober the day before ofcourse) because i can, without having any military training.
Read the free book war beneath the sea
Just finished it, its a must read.
I got Alexa to night read it
Good Lord Indy, put that phone on your desk on silent when you’re making videos, who could possibly be calling that’s so important that you have to keep answering that phone!?
Roosevelt
Hey Indy, TimeGhost or anybody reading this comment. I'm really interested in the story of the daring submariners and their incredible escape to friendly waters so if anybody could link me to the historical documentation regarding them in detail I would be very grateful.

7:40 or force them
Submarines are not ships, they are called boats
7:22 it was called the General Government simply, not 'General Government of Poland'. Poland as such was not present in any official name or correspondence, officially having been abolished as an entity according to the German and Soviet stance.
The only exception was the Emission Bank in Poland ('Bank Emisyjny w Polsce') which circulated the new currency used in the General Government, and which outside observers would likely have not known about- ie. a name for 'internal consumption'.
The notes famously bore the image of a 'góral', a Polish 'highlander'- Nazi racial theorists theorised the górale to be a 'Germanic', 'Tyrolean' subgroup of Poles (the Goralenvolk concept with its failed prospect of separated collaboration; ironically górals belonging to a broader Carpathain culture-linguistic group have if anything more Vlach cultural influenc, with similar traditional shepherds' clothes for example- it is possible that one of the things that convinced them, besides common use of the edelweiss flower owing to its presence in the mountain environment, there was a traditional form of the swastika which was locally prominent as a good luck symbol- attempts at forming a collaborationist unit failed completely though)
5:38 this dude needs a film about his exploits.
I was afraid that internment in Sweden would drag Sweden into the war. Well, let's see what happens
