First time I'm seeing this video 28/09/21. Wonderful footage of trips that today we can only dream about. The double head 24/19D combo brings back happy memories of being hauled out of Windhoek SWA by double head 24's and very often, a class 8 or even a 7, banking 15 coach trains up to Kruin.
The only danger was air pollution which made many people to contract asthma and cancer!More dangerous for the drivers and assistants including passengers!
Hi Trevor Loved your film - I did this trip with a GMAM Garratt the previous year, and this excellent compilation brought back so many memories. Many thanks for letting us share your extremely well captured video.
Hi John, I'm glad you enjoyed it! That line is so scenic, like many others in SA... I am having fun going through all these old videos and reliving the memories too.
Just as I remembered it back in the '90s, not too sure of the date, that view of Rooiberg, got a shot from the line-side, too difficult for me to get higher, but a great photo anyway!
The stops on both ends look neglected maybe someone can organise a fundraiser to refurbish those 2 stops abit. That will round off an exceptionally marvellous trip as seen in video gosh maybe some day i can experience that trip with the union limited and the 2 19s or even red devil.
The 19th class were a rough ride on the footplate compared to the Garratts. The big 20th class were stokered but a 15th class with clean tubes was a dream to hand fire on the Bulawayo to Mafeking run.

Thanks Hugo, glad you enjoyed it! Those days of steam in SWA must have been quite something.

Sadly everything in this country is starting to look not only neglected but outright ruined.

Those Garratts were amazing locos, and the 15s were the Greyhounds of the Dete Straight!
