- Follow the Union Limited from Willowmore through the spectacular Toorwaterpoort to Oudtshoorn. Locomotives 19B 1412 and 19D 2698 provide the power, and they steam like clockwork throughout the day. Apart from the amazing stretch of line through Toorwaterpoort, another highlight of this video is the train running through the foothills of the Groot Swartberg, which is wearing a mantle of snow after some wild weather the previous day.
Sound, scenery and SAR steam. Thank you so much for sharing such special moments.
Thank you, they were good times!
This is so good love the steam and it's vibe it creates.
Thanks. Toorwaterpoort is such an amazing place
I did this trip in the opposite direction, the river on the right was dry, but there was a cloudburst in the mountains, and we saw the wall of water coming downstream, just as well that we were running late, or our photographers would have been stranded on the opposite bank! Thanks for the fantastic memories you have brought back, of the incredible sound in the Poort, and the lovely sound of the 2 exhausts beating in unison!
Thank you, it's a truly incredible place!
What a sight and sound! Thanks for posting!
Thanks!
A splendid duet of steam! The sights and sounds are wonderful, loved every minute of it, thank you!
+rigidfinger I'm glad you liked it! It is certainly amazing country for a railway!
Great film....must have had a top crew on leading loco if safety valve lifted while hauling a heavy grade or the rear loco was doing all the work....fantastic well done and thank you.
They were both great crews on that day, they had their work cut out for them. But also good locos.
Awesome Awesome Awesome .... I traveled whole of South Africa like this back in the 70's and 80s as a school kid, very nostalgic....
Ah man that must have been awesome!
Amazing, the shots in the gorge are just awesome. Did not know such scenery existed in South Africa.
+RailScapes - Trains & Travel South Africa has some amazing scenery, and lots with trains running through...
Nice trip on an off-road bike.
I rode a lot of steam in the 60's/70's from King Williams town to Cape Town. Thanks for the memories.
George Koen .Great experience. How was it ?
Nkosinathi Gatsheni I must clarify that I was a passenger and it was amazing. I fell in love Nkosinathi.
Dileep Kumar movies
Good times! Mostly just a memory now, sadly...
A good driver on 19B getting the loco back in unison, loved the echos through that gorge, a really good video thankyou
That Toorwaterpoort really is a magic place.
Wonderful video, wish I had been on that train, only been to Oudtshoorn once and that was in 1976,arrieved there behind a Garratt,ah memories!.Thanks for posting the video.Alan.
Cheers Alan. Great country with great trains back in the day...
this is so way beautifull, i am so incredibly greatfull this has been captured
Thank you. It is certainly an enchanted place!
Beautiful video, especially as I know Willowmore and surrounds very well. The Toorwaterpoort trip is amazing. You can here the echos in the poort as the train, seemingly like a toy train, winds it way past the massive gorge. Too bad the Rosmead-Klipplaat-Oudsthoorn line is closed...
Thank you! Yes, a special part of the world.
Отличное видео!
Thanks
If we build it again, they will come.
Few places in the world can boast the scenery from Oudtshoorn, George to Knysna over the Outiniqua mountains.
Yes, incredible scenery and amazing railways
I just love these South African trains!
They are amazing!
magnificent film. even if it is 20 years old already. nothing better than steam and a cold day. but what makes me wonder. why are the locos working so ahrd_ after all they have only a few passenger coaches at the hook. and not 100 wagons iron ore from Saldanha?
Thank you! I think it may have been working extra hard for the adoring cameras...
fantastic video
Thanks! It was a great trip
Awesome shots, just subbed. Thanks for posting.
Cheers!
The Toorwaterpoort section is stunning beyonds words.Magnificent.Unbelievable.
It is a truly magical place.
I was "Looks cold for August", then I thought "Hm, south Africa, never mind", he he he.
Ah yes that hemisphere thing!
the train in climbing,at 7:50 some slipping is present. The first loco release some steam pressure, both go at full power.
Right on!
Очень красиво расположена дорога. А тяга поезда в два паровоза выглядит, как будто с другой планеты!

Engines going in and out of syn. Havn't heard that since 136 and 1057 battling to the summit out of Hamilton, Ontario !!! great
They sound great!
I am from USA and love the stream engine
I love them too!
I love that whistle from 1412!
It really is music to the ears...
I just love the south African steam engines, Garratts and all. Its like it is a law that manufacturers cannot make these in HO, East African locomotives as well. MTH HO trains needs to make these.
No HO models of 59 class EA Gattatt
There are a few available in HO but quite expensive
Wow! What awesome footage this is. Well done to whoever took the time to record this.. The firemen must have been kept pretty busy maintaining that head of steam. Is the water tender between the 2 locos standard or a recent design? Thanks for the upload........sheer joy!!!!!!!!
Nope. They run on diesel the reason for the tanker behind in place of the coal wagon.
Thanks. It was formerly a 19 class tender, converted to water tank purposes.
Spectacular!!
Thanks!
Once the engine has done a round 70 yards you can close the drain valves on the cylinders, otherwise you loose some power on the engine. I have worked steam engines and boilers on Ships.
The cylinder cocks operate on the exhaust stroke, so they shouldn't cause any power loss.
Amazing
Thanks!
Sweet memories.
Yes, good times!
Hi Trevor ! Absolutely fantastic !!!!! Incredible sound in Toorwater Poort. I'm a retired sound engineer & loved it. Superb photography. Any chance of buying a DVD copy of this ? Noel Tyler
Hi Noel, sorry for the very belated response... I never made DVD's of this footage. Happy to provide a better quality digital file. Let me know.
The Toorwaterpoort was great on my scrambler. But difficult. Local farmer thinks the railway line belongs to him.
+Deon Van der Westhuizen I hope you didn't end up on the wrong end off a firearm!
We really met a local farmer who was convinced that the railroad, station, and public road belongs to him. If I were living in the middle of nowhere I would capture any travelers just for the new conversation. The reluctant farmer tried his best to persuade us not to go "over his land" through his poort. But we were friendly and committed. We thought we could use our off-road motorbikes to ride in the dry river bed, but that was impossible. We had to ride on the tracks. The new concrete sleepers made the journey very bumpy. Speed-limit for the train is only 15 km/h through the poort, so we were safe. We found about 30 dead big tortoises between the tracks. We assume they got trapped between the tracks and starved to death.
My next XR650R trip. If the stupid ANC can not keep our heritage alive, I will do it on my scrambler.

Did you end up doing the trip on your bike?
@@steamfreak Yep, I posted the photos at the locations on Google Earth. Luckily most survived when Panoramio was discontinued by Google.
Bliksem!
Maar hoekom so stadig?
Gly sy clutch ?
😂 Ja. Sy clutch is nou stukkend...
it is a great video and great landscape. but it needs a little comment as well. watch - Eisenbahn Romantik - a steam series done by Hagen von Ortloff, this is how videos are to be. and your thumbs up will be by the thousands not just a few hundred.
Thanks, I'll have a look.
This machines contributed to the pollution of the air. Or kanjani guys?
It's all fragrant aromatic coal perfume, no pollution! 🙂

Very nice thank you!
Did they really need 2 locomotives just to pull 10 passenger cars?
Yes, they are heavyweight cars and the locomotives are branch line locomotives. One could probably have done it, but 2 look good!
And sure are gradients present, the force applied ti the wheels are alternative, not constant,,so more pistons,,more continuity thr force. this is a cause to a possible slipping.
wat n wonderlike stoomtrein self vanaf 1970 tot 1973 stoker gewees op TZANEEN TOT DAT DIE EERSTE DIESELS INGEKOM HET VERLANG NOU SOMMER VER TERUG
Lekker man
Is that wheel spin I hear every so often ?
Yes and with loco's it is termed slip.
Yes, one of the locos was slipping a bit
Dis die dae en die wat n men's nooit sal vergeed nie die klank en sy fluit wat hy fluit mis dit baie het self op hulle gewerk
Ja ek ook!
Too much smoke.
I like big smoke...
Skitterend.
Dankie
Such type of trains were the another source of air pollution for on they were disscharging carbon dioxide much.
Carbon dioxide to feed the trees and plants on our beautiful planet!
discharge less carbon than your car
