Brilliant. And in case it's encouraging, I was at 3:09 in my late forties and managed to squeeze out a 3:06 and a 2:58 in my extremely early fifties. Following you - and best of luck.💪
Hi Rich, really enjoyed your video. I’m running my first marathon this April in Brighton (aiming just to finish), I hope your training goes well and keep up the good work 👍🏻
I did my first ever marathon this year at Manchester in 3:35 just after a park run 19:56 (only ever sub 20 for me). 3:10 would be an amazing time! I’m looking forward to following how you get on 👍
Inspiring ambition, as ever. Look forward to following along. I'll be working towards a 1:35h half marathon (Reading) during the same period. But I'm half the man you are. 🫢
Definitely following this journey... I've been targeting your times since your sub 20 min 5K video, and I've still not quite hit them yet as I hit 50 next year. I was aiming at sub 3:30 for my Spring marathon, but might up it a little following your training. I like the videos, keep them coming - good luck with this! I find Runalyze "marathon shape" to be my best predictor - 3:47 now with a 3:10 optimal predicted if I hit the average mileage per week and 30K long runs each week.
Thank you for that! Great to have you on board! Very best of luck with your marathon - which one are you doing? I haven't checked out Runalyze in a while but I will when I'm a few weeks in I reckon! Cheers
Rich, not sure if you remember me but I was meant to be running Manchester but my wife was hit by a car a week before the race? After a long 8 months in hospital with 8 weeks in a coma. My wife is now home and I’m running London on a ballot place, but for Brain Research UK. Will be good to follow your videos as our training progresses. Hope all goes well.
Looking forward to following you get this goal! I'm doing my first marathon in Krakow in April aiming for sub 3:50. Also using Ben Parkes' plan (level 3)! 3:10 is an incredible time, I wonder how you'll fare in those 80k+ weeks...
Thanks Dylan and good luck to you! I'm jealous actually - I'd love to do Krakow because that's where my wife and I met! It just happens at an annoying time of year with the kids being at school etc. One day though! Yes... 80K weeks are heavy, but supposedly that's a good amount where things start to happen for a lot of people... We'll see!
Hope your training goes well and best of luck for the race - afraid my full marathon days are behind me now but I did manage a 3:22 finish 11 years ago when I was a mere 60 years old - struggling to break 1:45 for the half these days but glad I can still get out there!
@@TheRichKeeble - Thanks Rich - never really did enough training to hit my potential at the full marathon - my PB is 2:57:48 whereas I have a 1:16:25 for the half. Really enjoying the 10km these days and finished 1st MV70 at the London 10,000 last year with 47:23.
Great stuff Rich, your ability to talk and run at the same time is a rare talent! I can barely speak running a slow 5k ("thank you Marshall" is as far as it goes) Good luck with that training!
haha thank you, well it took me a while to be able to do that I think. You should check out Ben Parkes chatting away like it's nothing while running a marathon at 3:45min/km!
Hi Rich, good video. I'm running in Brighton in April too, this will be my 4th marathon. Aiming at the lofty goal of dipping under 3 hours, hopefully the training works. Hope you meet your goal 🙌
Sounds like an awesome goal and definitely within reach, Rich! I look forward to following along. I have the intermediate Ben Parkes training plan, so will likely use that this year to try to redeem myself after a less than stellar 2023, PR-wise.
I genuinely commend you for your ability to run your slow runs slow. I find it so tricky not to end up going quicker than I should. Getting tuned in the right pace should serve you well through training
Thanks Benjamin! When I started properly doing Zone 2 type training it was really tedious as I would have to run nearly 7min/km sometimes and walk hills - I remember doing that when I started my first marathon training 2 years ago. However as I've stuck with it I've found I can now run in Zone 2 as quick as 5:30min/km and sometimes faster with no elevation, and of course that's far more enjoyable. A big thing for me was working on my form - I found that running that slow my form was really sloppy and my cadence was really low, like below 150 maybe. Teaching myself to increase my cadence even on slow runs by taking smaller steps made a big difference, so running even 170 cadence on slow runs. Made a huge difference to my running economy, stopped me overstriding as well. Oh and not caring how slow you're running on strava is a big one. Good luck!
@@TheRichKeeble I’m looking at Chester in Oct , that should give plenty of time to train . Will get a couple of half marathons in throughout the year 👍. It’s a tall ask but May as well go big
Well we'll see! I've managed 20K now this week, so hoping to get in a few more runs to avoid too much of a jump next week! Thanks again Mark, and of course good luck with your own training!
Sounds like a good plan to take on, we are both entered into Brighton marathon too so could potentially see you there, I’ll be the tall(ish) guy with a silly camera on my head 😂 we do love your funny editing style 😂🙌 our kind of humour
Your times are uncanny compared to me. My PR was 3:53 for years, improved that to 3:39 this year and (now for the bad part) I was attempting 3:10 when I got the 3:39. I had a 1:35 first half and then my stomach ruined me and I had a very bad positive split😢
oh no! Sorry to hear about the stomach issues. I actually didn't have the perfect time with the gels on my first marathon... was very glad there were toilets near the finish. How funny about the times though! 3:39 is a very respectable time of course!
Hi Rich, had you done much/any running before your first marathon? Have you been an active person ordinarily? Seems like some very strong times for your first marathons, great work. I recently turned 40 and would like to do my first marathon, little bit apprehensive about it.
Thanks mate! I started running during the first UK lockdown in March 2020, and apart from a bit of kung fu and some weight lifting in the early 2000s I spent most of my 20s and 30s not being very active at all if I'm honest. I don't play any sport. Even after I started running I was running a lot in 2020, but then got lazy in 2021 and basically went into that first Brighton 2022 marathon having barely run the previous few weeks. I think I probably am slightly genetically advantaged as I ran my first ever 5K in just under 29 minutes, like the second time I'd gone out for a run, which is quite good I think. For your first marathon I would just not worry too much about a time. I got locked into sub 4 for some reason, but I put a lot of pressure on myself. Good luck!
Thank you! You're absolutely right - last year it was similarly optimistic and I ultimately ignored it, but I'm hoping as I'm in better shape and if I do manage to follow this plan... it won't be as far off x
@@TheRichKeeble Absolutely. 3:20 might be more manageable, 3:10 is a beast which several sub 40 min 10k runners I know have failed at. Check your garmin estimates too (I remember your video last year on the topic :)

It also agreed with some other thing I’ve forgotten the name of that looked at strava data. We’ll see nearer the time. And if I got 3:20 I’d be pretty happy - but don’t tell anyone
Rich is fast becoming my favourite running UA-camr. So relatable.
That's very kind of you to say so! I'm very pleased you're enjoying the "content"

Loving the B-roll. A running video that knows it's a running video, but can't quite play it straight.
ha thank you. I like to amuse myself somehow
Really enjoy your videos Rich! Best of luck with your training - I'm aiming for sub 3:30 at Wuxi, China in March ✌️
Thanks Thomas! Really appreciate that. Ooh that sounds like a fun one! Very best of luck!

Good luck with the training. I’m running Brighton next year too, although aiming for 3:30 so a bit less speedy (did 3:53 there this year).
Thank you! 3:30 is very decent, as is 3:53. I did 3:53 there last year, how funny! Good luck to you and maybe see you there!
