First time i went beyond a half I planned for 16 and ended up doing an extra lap of the course to make 18miles. The last 1.5m was the worst running experience ive had. I always thought the wall was pain but its a mental switch thats relentlessly saying 'stop running' + quads feel like they no longer work. Happened again on a 21 mile run with about 1 mile to go. Very hot day and i just watched my HR creep up for the last 45mins then 1 mile out had the same mental talk 'you need to stop'. I always run fasted and hadnt ever drank during a run. Ive since done a couple of 20 milers- drinking throughout and theyve been fine. Ive just done the 'sweat test' and now know i need to be drinking around 600mls per hour during the marathon. Belfast marathon on the 4th of October will be my first!
Definitely, I've never run an official race but I always wanted to run a marathon and I tried 4 times and every time I burnt out around 30 Km in. But one day the stars aligned and everything went well and I managed with a time of 3 hours 44. Nutrition was super important for me! Now training for my first official race, the Great North Run in a few weeks
I'm up to 20 miles and I had been training earlier in the year with an experienced marathon runner but we are on different plans now, so we don't do long runs together. I was struggling big time. So what I've done is line up friends to join me on parts of the long runs or some off road hill sessions. So this weekend I'll do 13km on my own and my mate will join me for 22km. Easier to break down mentally for me.
I hit the wall today. I regret forcing myself to run according to schedule in the name of consistency. I should be running my first marathon on 17 October. I'm not sure if I can run beyond 25km due to my failure to run beyond that distance in my last 2 attempts. My knees aren't cooperating. I think i have overused my muscles. I'll be taking a one week break. One of my ways of staying motivated is visiting this channel. Keep up the good work Sarah.
Absolutely love these ones and the channel, again, since it’s so positive and real. There’s just some good vibes. I love exploring my neighbourhood, but love that my local coffee shop is 3km from home. Was a great halfway point when starting!
I've just realized that everyone is training for marathons, and here I am trying to get myself to run a 10 K without stopping! We're all in different stages, just keep pushing through!
The journey to the marathon is the hardest part - long runs, slow runs, fast runs, cross training... the list rolls on. All this, and likely on your own - and as you rightly say, real life does get in the way. The marathon itself though... much different. The atmosphere, the spirit of the event, the knowledge you WORKED for this... and the finish line. BEST feeling ever is when you cross that line. Loving this series, Sarah. Kepp going!
You can do it! I only trained for 8 weeks for my first marathon, after starting running 2/3 months earlier. You won’t DNF in Amsterdam if you skip a session when you’re not up for it. Take it easy and enjoy it as much as you can.
I’ve recently picked up running after a 9 year break. These videos have been supper motivating, and I appreciate the words of encouragement that each member of The Running Chanel team gives as they present. Thanks guys!
Loving theses videos new to running and currently training for a half marathon next year ultimate goal is to run a full marathon one day! Theses videos really help keep me motivated!!
I've been injured for over a year and am about to start couch to 5k again to get me started then building to a half marathon in March and an Ultra in June (I know it's madness) but setting some challenging goals will hopefully help me. I love watching the running channel and Sarah your honesty about the impact this has on your daily life is brilliant - you keep going - you got this x
Returning to running after been told by the physician that I would never be able to run again after getting surgery in both my hips four years ago, getting 30-40 km running done per week without those periods of inflammation in the hips that was appearing after any type of physical exercise for the first two years is amazing. Even though I've frequently been running 25-30 km runs before surgery (with occasionally horrible pain in the hips) these videos with Sara and Anna have actually made me start to think about running a formal marathon. Watching TRC is really motivating due to its down-to-earth and personal approach. Keep it up!
I am also doing my first marathon as a 48 year old. COVID made me realize life is too short. I keep my training interesting by cross training, mixing in cycling and swimming. Hope I make it to end as well in March. Thanks for this motivational video. It is what I needed to keep going.
Keep it up Sarah, I have never run a marathon but am so keen to do one. Getting some hints and tips from this video and don't worry, you will nail it in Amsterdam.
Just get to the Taper! You're stronger than you think you are and the majority of the battle is mental. I think it was Anna in one of her older videos talked about creating a mantra that'll help you get through the toughest points of a run, and thats great advice. Sometimes, its the Nike classic, "Just do it" that gets me going and other times it is one I've created, "Look good, feel good" (I use that one to check my form and make sure that I don't look like I am falling apart) Best of Luck!
I’m training for my first marathon and it’s encouraging to see I’m not the only one in pain with my legs and training with some runs that really suck and are more challenging than others. Thanks for keeping it real Sarah!
I am training for the Chester marathon & totally understand how you feel😫 Thank you for your virtual hug & I am giving you one back🤗 Have you tried Garmin route planner? Tell Garmin, the distance, direction & road or trail & ta-da the perfect route downloaded to your watch! So good! Hope next week goes well Sarah💪
I know what you mean about feeling isolated in training. A big difference for me was joining a running club. Not just for the company whilst running, it also helped me to have a community to chat through training ideas and make friends! Keep going. 😊🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️
You're doing a great job of showing the highs and lows ofmarathon training, for me gruelling is the best description, Keep up the great work,,,,,You got this
Loving your positivity Sarah! I'm currently in the taper for the Brighton Marathon on the 12th September after 18 weeks of training. I've got through the tough sessions by reminding myself that not every run is going to be a good one and the chances are that the next will be much better. Keep up the good work!
Sarah great work on the training. I am training for an ultra early next year and one of the things I found is that quality sessions are so much easier when I create a workout and add it to my Garmin so I didn’t have to think about watching distance etc
Another newbie to marathon running here! Also training for my first full marathon in Amsterdam - my home town! Looking forward to seeing you at the start, we can do it!!
Keep up the great work! Smile knowing that there are thousands of Running Channel fans out here cheering you on. I have found that having a friend along on a mentally tough run makes it so much easier and help me break through that wall.
Good job sticking with it. You are much faster than me. One of my major motivations while training for my first marathons was I didn't want to travel half way around the world and look like a fool. The program I was following reminded me it was important to get the distance in and that performance would vary throughout training. I was worried going into the race because my longest runs were behind pace of the sweeper wagon, but the taper and rest time at the end of training did wonders, as well as the motivation of race day. You'll do great just get the training in and race day is the pay off.
Hi Sarah, I’m doing the Swiss City Marathon on the 31st October and I’m 9weeks into my training and yes it gets hard especially for us lone wolf runners lol, I have found that doing a timed run with other runners once a week or 2 really helps to see how much your fitness has come on and help motivate you! Keep up the good work🙌🏻
Sarah, we are with you! I’m running my marathon 10/31 and I’ve hit a wall skipped 2 days of training but put my big girl pants on and ran this morning felt so refreshed only walked once in my 5mi that’s huge for me!!! You guys rock keep running 🏃🏻♀️
Wow, nice kit, I never entered an athletic challenge before but hoping to do my first triathlon next year. Did my first unofficial half marathon this year, and now feel inspired to maybe train for a full marathon.
Learning so much from this channel. I am 60 and very tempted to start training with my daughter, who completed a marathon. Your an inspiration Sara and I look forward to your helpful videos and realistic advice and observations. You Will do this!
Keep going! Keep going! Last year I ran my first full.. the Marine Corps Marathon in the US.. when I registered I was so excited🤗 to be my first.. unfortunately was changed to a virtual😒 .. that was tough!! But I did it! I am a marathoner! I am so excited for this years.. I am in training so I am right there with you! We got this! 👏👏👏👏🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️ go Sarah!
Loving this series Sarah and you are doing so well. Lots of respect for you. But you said you haven’t really got anyone that’s going through the same thing, why aren’t you talking to Anna? I’d love to see a video of you both together discussing your marathon training journeys.
I'm doing York in October, at time of watching this, I'm in week 10. I am tired and achey and have had to really talk myself into runs the past 2 weeks. But! My overall running has started to improve. My VO2 max has increased week on week for the past 3 weeks, I have hit a new lactic threshold pace and my overall fitness has improved. I'm tired but it's worth it I think. Although the lack of sleep at the moment isn't really helping. You'll smash it Sarah!
Training solo while working and living in a field where personal health often goes down the drain. Trying to continue training for a marathon that I don't even know I'll be physically able to make due the nature of my job. I find your videos really comforting. Thanks for (as everyone else pointed out) being real. It is very much appreciated.
I love your video’s Sarah! Showing the ups and downs of training! That smile at the end when you were on the trail is a good reminder of why we all run!
Love your videos! The first one I ever watched, about following your (Sarah's) watch's suggested workouts for a month--was such a delight I ended up getting hooked on the running channel. Besides that, I'd recently switched to Mizuno Wave Riders, discovering how comfortable they are to run in ; so it was extra-fun finding out they are/were Sarah's preferred shoe too. Good luck in Amsterdam!
I love these videos! I'm quite new to running, but loving it wholeheartedly. Dreaming of one day being able to run a marathon! I'm rooting for you - keep going!
I am following the same plan. I also do not have anyone else around me who is preparing for a marathon so I just have to go through it alone. And, this attitude from Sarah just motivates me. Chin up and take it day be day. I have a question - How does your daily nutrition look like? And, are you working/planning on any nutrition/hydration during the long runs?
Marathon training is itself like a marathon - grinding on day after day, mile after mile. When I did it, I kept in mind a quote from Des Linden: "Some days it just flows and I feel like I’m born to do this, other days it feels like I’m trudging through hell. Every day I make the choice to show up and see what I’ve got, and to try and be better. My advice: keep showing up."
For getting through a tough session I remind myself of how far I’ve come, that I’m alive and that my body is capable. Good music or a podcast helps too! Sometime changing routes and places to run help too 😊
Loving this series ❤️ Awww wanted to give you a hug before that second 5 km. Well done Sarah I'm training for my 2nd Marathon and hopeing to complete the training with less injuries and more knowledge than last time 💪🏻🏃🏼♀️
My opinion as a middle-aged man who - sometimes, quite well for an old bloke - has run 100 marathons/'short' ultras is that race days are great (the best - NOT THE ONLY ) training. These few weeks of training WILL - as long as you regularly race after the marathon, I try/recommend an event at least every month or so: half marathon/10k/10miler: marathons? 4..5..times a year and you won't need to go through the entire training plan rigmarole - BE THE MOST DIFFICULT TRAINING YOU WILL DO because you will only 'know' you have climbed the mountain of a 'real' marathon and reached a high plateau in your running journey! You are doing fantastically and your honesty is refreshing and fun!
I'm training for my first half marathon and I am feeling unprepared. This is helpful since I'm a week away and feeling burnt out amd not where I should be.
Sarah - best of luck in your first marathon. Here is some advice I would have for you. My training program says to not have a time goal for your first marathon - just run to finish. This will help you avoid injuries. Marathon training is really about slow (aerobic pace) for 80-90 percent of your runs. When you do a long runs you run those 2 minutes per mile slower then your shorter runs. Again this avoids injuries. Good luck.
Wam Bam Amsterdam ! Good luck in your marathon pursuit. The first one and the second one always suck. But then you learn what to do and not for those that follow later.
I am a new runner at 5k and my next target is 10k. Sarah's week by week progression gives me an idea of how it would be preparing for a marathon. Bahut badia(hindi) I look forward to more videos in the series ...
Planning on running my first marathon next summer. Got into running 2 years ago, but until last spring, I haven't gotten much in due to Covid and school. But, in the 6 months of consistent running that I've done, I've ran a 22:22 5K, which I think is pretty good.
I’m also training for my first marathon, the Los Angeles Marathon on Nov 7!! The only thing that keeps me on track and motivated is the running group from my local gym. About 8 of us are training for the LA marathon; having that peer support (and pressure!!) really keeps me going. This morning was a really tough run for me- I’m jet lagged and my feet were aching like hell, but there was no way I was going to stop running with friends in front and behind me. I’m truly not sure I could do this alone.
I am training for London right now and it’s nice to know others are going through the same difficulties. I’ve been approaching long runs by creating short loops and treating each one like a separate one. I change the album i’m listening to when I get to the start to try to trick my brain into thinking I’m starting fresh 😂
Another great episode 👏 loving the marathon series! My marathon is October 02nd...getting close now, but I am so excited for the run and the buzz...there is no other feeling as good as finishing a marathon...you will do it and experience that major satisfaction too 😀 p.s. the mizuno gear is just gorgeous, really lovely design...
You're doing amazing!!! I wish I had a 5k pace, or 10k pace or even a HM pace..., just have a 'XX'-mins-per-mile pace stagger that seems the same whether I'm doing a HM or a 2km round the block!
I feel your pain girl, I’m training for my 15th marathon and even with all my experience, I think the pandemic is to blame, but this training cycle FEELS like my first marathon. Motivation is at a all time low. But I’m still getting my runs in, but it’s so hard! It’s like I’m starting from square one again, and it’s so frustrating! We will get through this!!!!

Ah that's great to hear Roger! So glad you're back running again - definitely aim for that marathon! :-)
Sarah you're doing an amazing job! I'm half way through a half marathon training plan and that seems tough! Good luck!
I am also doing my first marathon as a 48 year old. COVID made me realize life is too short. I keep my training interesting by cross training, mixing in cycling and swimming. Hope I make it to end as well in March. Thanks for this motivational video. It is what I needed to keep going.

Sarah is so relatable with her honesty about the struggle of real life and mind games.

Thanks for sharing this Andrew 😊
I haven't yet done a marathon but Sarah's journey throughout these videos has gotten me excited and inspired to change that soon! 😁
You're doing a great job of showing the highs and lows ofmarathon training, for me gruelling is the best description, Keep up the great work,,,,,You got this
Well done Sarah 👍🏻 I have my first marathon on Sunday, training has been tough at times but looking forward to crossing the finishing line 😊
You got this Laura! Good luck 😊
Good luck Sarah! :D I'm currently training for my first half marathon and you're such an inspiration :D
Thank you! Good luck to you too!
Loving Sarah’s training vlogs, you go girl!
Yay! Thank you!
Loving your positivity Sarah! I'm currently in the taper for the Brighton Marathon on the 12th September after 18 weeks of training. I've got through the tough sessions by reminding myself that not every run is going to be a good one and the chances are that the next will be much better. Keep up the good work!
Awesome video. It’s in my plan to move up from half’s to full marathons, but dreading the training!
You’re doing amazing Sarah! It’s super tough but so worth the rewards, you got this!
Awesome update. Thank you.
I am looking forward to your victorious achievement video immensely.
Thank you!
Thanks Lisa! Good luck with your training too 😊
Keep up the great work! Smile knowing that there are thousands of Running Channel fans out here cheering you on. I have found that having a friend along on a mentally tough run makes it so much easier and help me break through that wall.
Love how you went through all the levels of emotions one feels during hard training. You ended the week on such a high note…well done🥰
Thanks Lisa :-)
Good job sticking with it. You are much faster than me. One of my major motivations while training for my first marathons was I didn't want to travel half way around the world and look like a fool. The program I was following reminded me it was important to get the distance in and that performance would vary throughout training. I was worried going into the race because my longest runs were behind pace of the sweeper wagon, but the taper and rest time at the end of training did wonders, as well as the motivation of race day. You'll do great just get the training in and race day is the pay off.
Thanks so much for your support :-)
This is so good to see someone who loves to run sometimes not loving it! The reality of training for a big race! Keep going Sarah you’re smashing it!
Awesome job !! Keep training hard you’ve got this !!
Your effort is really inspiring, Sarah! 🙏🏻 I'm training for my first 10k in a few weeks and your videos are great help. Go for it!
Keep up the good work🙌🏻
Thanks for the tips, Ken 😊
Well done Sarah your doing fab. Keep at it. My long run tip is get a good audiobook. X
Keep grinding. It will be worth it when you pass the finishing line! Speed isn't everything! Thanks for a great channel.
Thanks! Will do!
Haven't started the journey yet, but I've got a few future goals in mind. Keep going!!!!
I love going on the long runs because I use it as an excuse to explore areas and roads that I have never been before. That's my motivation 😉.
Great job training!! You got this! I am training for my first 1/2 marathon.
Wow, nice kit, I never entered an athletic challenge before but hoping to do my first triathlon next year. Did my first unofficial half marathon this year, and now feel inspired to maybe train for a full marathon.
Great stuff Christopher!
hi Sarah! All the best of luck, I am running my first half marathon in Amsterdam as well! I hear the route is amazing ;)
Learning so much from this channel. I am 60 and very tempted to start training with my daughter, who completed a marathon. Your an inspiration Sara and I look forward to your helpful videos and realistic advice and observations.
You Will do this!

Well done with your training! I have my first marathon in 4 weeks 😱 I spend most of the long run thinking about the bath at the end!
Training solo while working and living in a field where personal health often goes down the drain. Trying to continue training for a marathon that I don't even know I'll be physically able to make due the nature of my job. I find your videos really comforting. Thanks for (as everyone else pointed out) being real. It is very much appreciated.
Thanks so much Jennifer. And keep pushing through, we wish you all the best for the rest of your training and race day :-)
Well done Sarah for getting it done ..good luck with the weeks of joy .....don't think 26 miles ...break it up into sections
Keep going Sarah you’re doing so great 👍
I run for sunrises. My 16 week marathon training starts 9/20. You’ve got this
Great video, well done with your training and marathon goal, good luck!
Learning curves are fun! And part of why I enjoy running so much.
Great work Sarah!
Great Video - questioning my marathon training too! thanks for the motivation to keep going. All the best and keep going too!!
Thanks Joshua :-)
I can’t believe we don’t have 3k.... those trainers are amazing!! Someone deserves the opportunity to run in those.
I love your video’s Sarah! Showing the ups and downs of training! That smile at the end when you were on the trail is a good reminder of why we all run!
You're doing so well, keep it up! 😊❤️
Way to go Sarah! Keep going!
Thank you, Sarah! Love watching your videos. I might -almost- be ready to commit to training for a longer race eek!
I’m doing half a marathon in October if all goes well, will sign up for a full one. Keep going you got this! 💪

Very inspiring. I’m currently training for my first half and love seeing your journey. Keep it up!
This really helps me with my training. Love the shoes!
Good luck with training! You are doing great 🙂
Thank you!! 😊
Thanks for taking us along on your journey! You totally got this!
Good luck. You are a good inspiration for my own HM training.
I appreciate that! Good luck with the rest of your training 😊
For getting through a tough session I remind myself of how far I’ve come, that I’m alive and that my body is capable. Good music or a podcast helps too! Sometime changing routes and places to run help too 😊
Nice one, you can do it Sarah, some upbeat music always helps for me
Thank you 😊
Way to go! I'm training for my first marathon as well 👍😁
Keep going! You’re such an inspiration! Will be booking in my marathon next year 👍🏻👍🏻
Such an inspirational series!
Thank you so much for this! 😊
I'm training for my first half marathon and I am feeling unprepared. This is helpful since I'm a week away and feeling burnt out amd not where I should be.
Have been contemplating a marathon. This is very inspiring! Thank you!
You can do it!
Great job 👏. Thanks for sharing your pain with us 😉
Sarah - best of luck in your first marathon. Good luck.
Thanks Stuart :-)
Love this video! Going true a marathon training plan myself right now and the enthusiasm you have is so motivating!
Wam Bam Amsterdam ! Good luck in your marathon pursuit. The first one and the second one always suck. But then you learn what to do and not for those that follow later.
Sarah, you are the most real runner on youtube!
I am a new runner at 5k and my next target is 10k. Sarah's week by week progression gives me an idea of how it would be preparing for a marathon. Bahut badia(hindi) I look forward to more videos in the series ...
You're doing amazing, keep it up!!! 🥰 Xx
Having the support of a group can be help make the difference. Best of luck on November 7!
Always cool video's with Sara !
I am training for London right now and it’s nice to know others are going through the same difficulties. I’ve been approaching long runs by creating short loops and treating each one like a separate one. I change the album i’m listening to when I get to the start to try to trick my brain into thinking I’m starting fresh 😂
You got this Sarah!!
Keep up the fantastic effort! Your videos are great motivation for me to keep going to.🤗
Another great episode 👏 loving the marathon series!
I'm currently injured still but can't wait to get started 😀
Wishing you a speedy recovery Alex!
