ABBA's success in the U.S. really skyrocketed after the play "Mamma Mia" became a success. With that said, this is among my favourites of ABBA's songs and danced to at many dance club since then. This is a Disco song originally released on July 2, 1979. Look up their best compilation titled "Gold: Greatest Hits."
The bridge in this track is superb as the structure. It really is a musical journey. ABBA Georgio Moroder and Chic turned DISCO into an art form of the highest quality
Hey Paul...have you heard the Matt Pop remixed version of ABBA's tune "My Momma Said" from their 1st Waterloo album? It kicks and the soulful beat is almost as fast as Voules-vouz. Many of their tracks should be re-released.
Love ABBA. Started with the Arrival album back in the 70's (I still have it). Unfortunately they never became real big in the US. A lot of the kids back then laughed and called them a bubble gum pop group. I was fortunate to see them in concert in Chicago on their only US tour. Interesting how a new generation is discovering them and appreciating the music.
Yeah, this was their album that came out at the height of the disco era. I saw them on their only US tour in support of this album in 1979; they were incredible live. Love your ABBA journey.
Their biggest disco hit. Songs in a similar vein are Lay All Your Love On Me, Does Your Mother Know, On And On And On, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, and Summer Night City. The original basic backing track was recorded as Criteria studios in Miami before being taken back to Sweden to be overdubbed. Members of the group Foxy also appear on the backing track.
I'm 11 months too late, but I adore Your reaction to this track, so here's my comment... This clip (disco ball and all...) was recorded at the height of the disco era - hence, the synchronized strobes and dancing crowd. THANK You for reacting to this one - You brought me down Memory Lane, making treasured memories of a time long gone flood my brain, once again...💕💃
Pure dance..sure it would move my body..but I would have been staring at Agnetha so much I would have forgotten to dance..Just too beautiful..hot and angelic..and her voice..WOW!!!

🧡 ABBA! Dating myself by admitting I danced to this from 1979 - . This wasn't one of ABBA's best, though not ignored. Deejays would pull it apart to bridge one song to another. Thanks again, Dereck, for reacting to one of the pop/disco era's favorite groups. If you ever consider a genre of music to react to you'll find some great disco artists, vocalists, and dance tracks to react to. You might even lose your pants over some.
I really love this song, this is why I'm still in love with ABBA, I dance it every time a hear it, this is what music nowadays must be. You should listen to gimme gimme gimme which has a similar rhythm and also Mamma Mia (different rhythm but catchy too)
I have always loved this song, which was a very different direction for them. That Miami sound they got from using Foxy added a lot of spice that would otherwise have been missing from it. The tightness of those saxophones... love it.
One Of Us When All Is Said And Done Our Last Summer My Love, My Life They have a lot of great songs to get into. A lot of their songs don't have any official videos, but watch them/listen to them anyway.
If you like this, you’ll love ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’, many people think that it was the blueprint for 80’s dance/pop. Voulez Vous is a one night stand song, going clubbing for that hook-up, Voulez Vous is what French Call Girls would say to potential clients “do you want??”
There is an Australian movie called The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert which stars Hugo Weaving, (Agent Smith from the Matrix, Red Scull in Captain America) a group of 3 drag queens who make a cross country trip through Australia who are ABBA fans and perform to their songs. It kind of popularized ABBA for the gay community a bit around that time in the early 90s. I think it may have inspired the American movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything -Julie Newmar, which starred Wesley snipes, John leguizamo, and Patrick Swayze
fun fact Ace of Base (also swedish) and famous dance/pop music group from the 90's made a song called "Voulez-vous danser" ... I've always seen this as an "hommage" to Abba's song
Love your reactions to ABBA. Other songs that was successful on the US chart was ‘Take A Chance On Me’ and ‘The Name Of The Game’ Also a rare hit that charted was one of the guys Bjorn, fronting this song called ‘Does your mother know’
I LOVE this song, and video..such a great song, such a happy vibe..would have LOVED to be in that crowd at that particular time..it looks so fun..looks magic..look very fun....just great :)
Glad to see you enjoying ABBA so much Dereck 🤩👍 ABBA songs have been proven to be evergreen; and that would be due in part to the time the spent crafting their songs - they were a studio act, and thus toured relatively rarely (the Australian tribute band, 'Björn Again', have done far more touring since 1989, and even have a franchise of other 'Björn Again' troups that go around the world 🤣). Keep enjoying 😊👋👍🖖
What do you know, a chanel where the reactor actually...reacts! Love that, I'm subscribing right now, but anyone else noticed that smile?! OMG 😁 And yeah, I absolutely love ABBA!!!
To really see how ABBA was confined on a stage in TV shows etc. one should view UA-cam videos of their live performances with a large band, back up singers (to sing Angetha's backing tracks) and the energy they put into performances.
Life long ABBA fan here. Derek, are you aware that after 40 years break ABBA have recently gone back into the studio and have recorded a few songs for their "virtual concert" presentation. I am waiting with so much anticipation to hear them but there has been a delay in the release.
I've watched you reviewing many ABBA songs and really enjoyed it! Now it's safe to say you appreciate ABBA and how strong their music is, till this day....have you listened to their new music? And what do you think of that?
Voulez-vous was, maybe still is a French pick up line from the 70's. I lived in England then and even the Beatles used it in a song, it basically means "would-you?" the Beatles say " Voulez-vous couchez avec moi?" or would you sleep with me...
Voulez-Vous the S in "vous" is silent. That is the single edit, the album version is extended. Voulez-Vous was a double A sided single with Angel eyes (also from Voulez-Vous album) on the other side But Voulez-Vous was the obvious radio play side making No.3 in UK chart which is amazing really taking into consideration the album had already previously (containing the track) gone to No.1 in album chart. Yes its very disco influenced, disco was huge late70s/early80s and with Blondie Heart Of Glass having been a No.1 global smash earlier in 1979, Voulez-Vous was right up there around late79. I never noticed it before but the liars of instrumentation and production value is just extraordinary. My interpretation of this track has always been a sexual innuendo reference Voulez-Vous ...whats your sexual desire? and I reckon I'm not far away that hidden meaning.
Dereck, the S is not pronounced...sth like /vuuu) /Vule vu/. Awesome beat...Adult lyrics (parental ad required). Great guitar'n'synth riff!!! Never stop the ABBA journey, please
Voulez vous means “do you like”. And the song goes ..” voulez vous...aha”...it seems like the guy asks if the girl likes “aha”, which refers to sex (or just a hookup) and ...” I'm really glad you came, you know the rules, you know the game...no promise, no regret... ain’t no big decision... We’re done that before and now we’re back to get some more...”
By the way next year in Sweden is to celebrate the 50 years of ABBA... With “Waterloo” in 1974. It was the 19th edition of the melodifestivalen contest, hosted at the Brighton Dome in the UK... And will be hosted in Stockholm City next years... Welcom to Sweden gays and girls... AND HAVE A GRATE PARTYYYYYYY - 2024.... I KNOW IAM ALL OVER YOU TUBE... Another famous song from the 1970s with "Voulez Vous" (do you want to?) in the lyrics is "Lady Marmalade" by Labelle, a No. 1 pop and R&B hit from 1974. ... "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?" (Do you want to go to bed with me tonight?) Patti Labelle went on to have a busy solo career in the 1980s (and some awesome hairstyles) ... and to sell some seriously delicious sweet potato pies and other goodies in the 2010s ! :-) There was another No. 1 pop version of "Lady Marmalade" from the 2001 movie soundtrack to "Moulin Rouge," with vocals by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil' Kim and Mýa -- which I am sure you have heard of. (Christina comes close, but nothing compares to Patti Labelle!)
3:20 I don't think they said that... :) No one in Sweden talked about "dance songs" in the 1970s, afaik. Terms used at the time were words like schlager, ballad, folk, pop, disco, funk, jazz and so on, if anything.

Yes, it's French, and it means "Do you want". The song is about if you want something, go and get it, and not having any regrets about it.
