Bonus facts about the Rubik's 2x2 and 4x4 to add on to stuff you mentioned about bad performance: They were known to break really easily. Their 2x2s had these four little pegs on the tips of the core spindle pieces which prevented the puzzle from twisting apart. Well, with how stiff they always were, those pegs wore down quite fast and eventually broke off completely. If you broke opposite ones (on the other side of the core, not on the same piece), the cube would just twist apart if not perfectly aligned. Trying to super glue something so small was difficult and often just didn't hold. But it didn't much matter because even when it did hold, other pegs were soon to break due to the wear. If you lost one of those broke pieces, which was really easy, you'd have to find a substitute like melting a nail in there or gluing a piece of a toothpick in. They specifically mention you shouldn't speed cube their 4x4s then and recommended you only turned when the layers were perfectly aligned, but it didn't matter because they too were really stiff which caused tension on the center piece stalks and eventually failure. When a center piece would break, it was virtually impossible to glue it on strongly enough because of said tension re-snapping it. They redesigned it somewhere along the way, but it had the same issue. It took them many years to finally redesign both of them into something more durable, which are now being sold in stores today as their tiled models. But they aren't the nicest things to turn. Like, even if you were just the average consumer looking to get a cube, I'd still recommend getting something else because chances are the one you'll get will be too stiff to be fun to solve even casually.
You know I always wanted to see some sort of a twisty puzzle timeline, which would showcase how the NxN cubes evolved over the years. You think something like that would be possible to construct?
As someone who started when eastsheen were the best, this is a nice throwback (and people seem to not see the similarities between the eastsheen puzzles and many of today's mechanisms)
Being a Taiwanese cuber. Those are my first cubes(even now I'm still using that 2x2 lol). Your video really bring up my childhood memories. Thanks for the good work!!
East Sheen 4x4 was my third cube ever. Love and hate that classic purple color. Great video historian. At the moment the 4x4 and 5x5 is available at the cubicle for faster USA shipping. The 4x4 was my favorite puzzle at the time (early 2000s) and also was a popular Super Cube sticker mod contender.
My old Eastsheen puzzles sit on the shelf like old treasured relics of the past. I won't part with them. After all, they were once the best 4x4 and 5x5 I had. Although HKnowstore has some available, I'm not certain they are still being produced. Like the video states, nobody really uses them anymore. If you want a really good 4x4 or 5x5, there are quite a lot available that are much better.
The Eastsheens were awesome for the time. I was just cleaning dug up some old NIB Eastsheens from 2008 and found about 11 sets of new Cubesmith stickers. www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/cpjy3o/wow_who_remembers_eastsheen_and_cubesmith/?
My first ever 4x4 was an Eastsheen clone I found in a pawnshop. They were selling them brand new in little plastic display domes. It was extremely cheap, and had the exact same orange side color replacement. For all I know, it _was_ an Eastsheen, but it wasn’t branded as one. It just said “Magic Cube 4” or something similar.
Fun fact: I bought a Eastsheen 4x4 from ebay three years ago (after getting the Rubik's 4x4 which was horrible) and did not notice the brand until watching this video. The stickers are in terrible condition and I wanted to throw it away. But now I have the feeling, that I own a part of history and throwing it away is not an option anymore (even if the turning is and was never good). In general, it is interesting to see a channel diving deeply into the history of cubing and I appreciate it.
Thanks to eastsheen for giving us a new better mech for the 2x2 and 4x4 that has evolved over time to give us what we have today from Moyu, Gans, Qiyi, YuXin, and Yj.
dude I legit had the eastsheen 2x2 as one of my first guides, I remember that solution guide that came with it, I might maybe have it in a box filled with pieces still barely haha
Do a Cubesmith video for sure. I dug up some old NIB Eastsheens from 2008 and found about 11 sets of new Cubesmith stickers. www.reddit.com/r/Cubers/comments/cpjy3o/wow_who_remembers_eastsheen_and_cubesmith/?
i think i have a 2x2 of it because its too similar to the video becausd instead of orange its kinda like a purplish red or pink? also the sticker is peeling off
My older brother had a 4x4 and gave it to me. I didn’t like it and it fell apart so I decided to throw it out. I’m now so mad to realize it was a eastsheen 4x4. I was a beginner at the time and had no idea what it was.
*happy dance* a new Cubing Historian video! These are awesome and keep getting better! Mind telling us how much TIME it took to make this episode, approximately?
Hello!I'm a cuber from China. your videos are so nice!may i take them to a website in our country?I will translate them and put subtitles on them! And list your name ,links under the videos.I hope that you can allow me do that .
My first 4x4 and 5x5 were Rubik's brand. Lost them when they slipped out of my bag that was open for some reason on a bus after an out of town Cross Country meet. Was upset at the time, but not so much anymore because they turned like absolute ass. Have since replaced them with a Shengshou 5x5 mini and some modern 4x4.
3:56 ahem, 57mm mini shengshou 5x5
The Cubing Historian what?
The Cubing Historian F*ICKING LANGUAGE.
I was about to comment that.
The Cubing Historian I saw this in one of your videos. I _never_ thought it was real! I thought it was a good photoshop.
Heshu is a diensheng sub brand

thanks for making these extremely well edited master pieces. :) Always a pleasure if I see them in the sub box.
didn't expect to see you here
Eastsheen may be outdated, but their mini 2x2 is still a staple in the modding community
NK Cubed so true tho. People use it for the 2x2x1 and many other mods.
Unfortunately, sometimes the core of a mini 2x2x2 breaks.
@@Random22 now in order to get a 2x2x1 you just buy the z cube one
Hey!
Don't mention Tony Fisher, he might get you a copyright strike.
Being a Taiwanese cuber. Those are my first cubes(even now I'm still using that 2x2 lol). Your video really bring up my childhood memories. Thanks for the good work!!
2:02 Goosebump alert!
The blockiness is over 9000!
5:54 Honestly, that image looks like a 4D cube to me for some reason.
My first 2x2 was keychain by EastSheen.
Cool
Mine was an enlarged Rubik's KO.
You should make a video about the speedcubing eras. You should make them on your own.

Another great video. Thanx for not wasting my 6 minutes while watching this video

Now that I think about it. They just might (unlikely) become collectible some day.
There are TONS of eastsheens at some book stores
KDGCuber i saw you on jacksfilms, also, what about at books a million?
Do a video on types of plastics also thanks for this for old school cubers
***Now available at your nearest National Bookstore.***
I bought the Eastsheen 3x3 at National Book Store :P TCH forgot about this.
Oofi3 those don't exist
I like Westsheen better
Twistii Cuber but what about northsheen?
Eh, not as good as Southsheen
I like gansheen
Southsheen is a awesome!
rex88808 northwestsheen FTW

I miss my old Eastsheen 5x5. Was a fun cube for the time. Made a weird sound at the beginning, but they kinda all did.
Good Job ! I don't even know about this company and its story so Good Job and keep it Up !
Great video! Thank oyu for the history~
Omg i love your videos!!
You mentioned Tony after all that happened? Dude, your are the bravest person
I figure it's only common courtesy. He might despise me, but I still respect what he's done for the community.

WOAH! Is that a 2x2x2x2?
Thanks to eastsheen for giving us a new better mech for the 2x2 and 4x4 that has evolved over time to give us what we have today from Moyu, Gans, Qiyi, YuXin, and Yj.
The shengshou mini 5x5 is 57mm
Before Eastsheen there were simple DIYs that you had to put together. Then there started the type A type B type C etc.
i have a very old eastsheen 3x3, it bandages loads its not good turning but kinda for its kinda level but the stickers are still the same
I need to get that eastsheen set
Great content :)
I loved and miss my eastsheen so bad
I’ve been looking for this for a long time Thanks
Can you do a video of Lan Lan
dude I legit had the eastsheen 2x2 as one of my first guides, I remember that solution guide that came with it, I might maybe have it in a box filled with pieces still barely haha
Hey man, been rewatching some episodes and I have to ask. Are you using linux? because the x and maximize buttons look like ubuntu.
1:51 *when your name gets mentioned but you aren’t that person.
Great video as always. Where did you find the scans of the Eastsheen patents though? It'd be neat to take a look at them
I like these history vids
You should make a vid on cubesmith

Your vids are awesome
I remember deciding between a lanlan 2x2, and an eastsheen 2x2 lol
Do a video on mefferts! I know of them as the most "ethical" store but I wonder if that view was biased. I also see they have lots of inventory issues
My older brother had a 4x4 and gave it to me. I didn’t like it and it fell apart so I decided to throw it out. I’m now so mad to realize it was a eastsheen 4x4. I was a beginner at the time and had no idea what it was.
first speedcubes were these from ebay seller huskyomega or something like that
Why no 3x3?
I actually just ordered a Dayan Octahedron a day or two ago lol
It's fun! It's just a 3x3 shape mod, so there's no massive new challenge, but it's still fun to play with.
*happy dance* a new Cubing Historian video! These are awesome and keep getting better! Mind telling us how much TIME it took to make this episode, approximately?
Two and a bit months, simply because of laziness.
The Cube invention by Erno Rubik wasn't to bad, this is why it was sold World Wide a second after Erno solves his Cube.
I love these

Absolutely, go ahead. As long as you list me as the creator and link back, you can do whatever you want with them.
surely!thanks a lot!
same with Wuque and Wushuang
with 4x4 and 5x5
i actually the same 4x4 for about $12 but mine cant turn that well
Yay you're alive
You are making me feel old
Oh no you showed Tony Fisher's profile picture which was part of his supper big 3x3 and now he's going to have a fit.
Is there an eastsheen 3x3
yes.
thank you
Why didn't east sheen make a 3x3?
They have! It's just very obscure
I have an eastsheen 5x5
Yes! A new cubing Historian Video!
Just gonna put this down myself im gonna assemble my old eastsheen 4x4 later 5:17
I liked the video before the ad ended
Very supportive guy.
Lol, I liked at 0:02😅
What about the 3x3
Eastsheen never made a 3x3, possibly to avoid copyright issues.
The Cubing Historian ah ok thanks
Update: There actually is!
Mf8 puzzles(bauhinia,master pentultimate,curvy starminx,some others) are MUCH worse than Rubik's 4x4x4 and 5x5x5.
maru is also based in taiwan :)
What is eastsheen
Idk man watch the vid.
I like how they used mauve instead of orange
NO MOYU BUT DAYAN AND HEHSU?
Yay new video
I have an eastsheen 2x2
Most 5x5s are the same size as a 4x4
I found eastsheen cubes in my local toystore
eastsheen has a yt channel now...
Now get ready for... WEST SHEEN!!!
My first 4x4 and 5x5 were Rubik's brand. Lost them when they slipped out of my bag that was open for some reason on a bus after an out of town Cross Country meet. 5:52 *_YEET_*
The moyu before dayan.
What the fuck a new video?!
I thought eastsheen made 3x3 because I own one
I’ve never heard of east sheen I only use robins
Side note: "Yuxin" is still pronounced "you sheen".
Judith L Well more like You-shen
No it’s Yucksin
GDCuber I really doubt that
You.
Shin.
Judith L *You-Shin”
Umm, did you just say... Yu-ksin? I-I’m sorry but it’s said like Yu-shin.
"Yuksin"
Pretty sure that’s how it’s pronounced
GDCuber x’s in Chinese are usually pronounced sh or zh
Yuzheene
Yushyn
I put vegetable oil in my rubiks 2x2 and it u8 in one flick
This is basically just an eastsheen cubes review lmao
