I used to be so confused why Rubik's made their cubes so bad but over time I've realized they aren't bad. They do work. They build them to be strong and take abuse because they are meant for people who don't know what they are doing and a lot of the time that means children and children are rough on things.
I also pretty much realised the same a few days ago, I would've simply thought previously that they were just appalling at making a mechanism that could turn sufficiently.
I have a cube that was literally a free promotional generic cube that is better than the Rubik's. Certainly the Rubik's cube I bought 15 years or so ago had to be tapped on the table to square it up after every turn else it would lock up.
When I first started, I started on an original Rubik's cube, and after about 500 solves, I broke it, because I always got it stuck. The second one took about 2500 solves before it broke. But by that time I was more precise in my turning, so when I got my first speed cube, it felt almost like it was turning on its' own. Fun fact: when it seems to start corner cutting, it's just about a few solves away from breakinng apart. 😆
I’m so happy you mentioned the rubiks 4x4. I had it for 2 hours. Learnt how to solve a 4x4 on it with your video. Was going for a solo run and whilst trying to do a turn with it it literally exploded in my hands with pieces flying everywhere. My hands we so sore from the 2 hours of effort. Needless to say the QiYi replacement I bought is fantastic.
This was my first “speed cube.” I used to practice on the bus I rode to work and one time as I was doing a solve one of the other riders said to me “umm, can you please stop? That’s really annoying.” So yes, I know how loud that is. 😂
I managed to take apart the normal rubik's cube and its not a ball core. It was very hard to take apart and now its permanently broken. Also, the tightness is because the corner pieces are locked inside, and the pieces themselves overlap a lot.
"I'm going to go out on as limb and say this isn't a very good cube" Me, watching the video: "That's probably not going out on a limb if we're going to be honest here."
I got a regular Rubik’s brand cube when I first started solving, I wanted to get a speed cube but figured that I should learn how to solve first. When I finished beginners method and started CFOP I then decided to try to upgrade my cube. I took of the plastics tiles in the center pieces and then loosened the screws until they felt easier to turn(Don’t over loosen the core, the cube will pop). I then put come vaseline in the cube(I don’t recommend Vaseline, although it worked for me). The cube then actually worked a bit better. The corner cutting increased by probably 10 degrees. It just felt better in general after that.
I forgot to mention that I honestly think that both cubes are the same and that the center tides on the speed variant just have not he’s to be taken apart. They both have ball cores. Also the ball core is just a regular core that is shaped like a ball. I don’t think that is does anything for performance.
The sound of the Rubik's cube is so specific. The moment you started turning the "inexpensive" cube ($13! Wow, I have $4 cubes which turn better than that) I immediate recognized the sound.
I don't know if anyone knew this, but you can actually loosen a regular Rubik's cube. If you have a small enough screwdriver, it is possible to pry off the center tiles and take it apart. I did it a while ago before I learned the "Wonders of buying a speed cube!" I was so proud of myself for sanding it down, washing the parts of with soap and water, and putting it back together again.
