@@mazarine_44 it's actually super tiring and doesn't make much. Rice farming is a part time job. Farmers in the northeast of Thailand still have to come work in Bangkok while waiting for the rice to grow in order to even feed themselves.
For Japanese rice the first crop of the season is labeled Shinmai. Japanese labeling laws require hulling and/or milling dates to be clearly printed on the rice bag. Some like my SIL prefer to buy Japanese brands that are not milled until they are imported into the US; this helps to ensure the freshest possible rice. If she can’t get her preferred brand, she will mill her own with her home rice mill machine. Me, I am just happy to get imported Japanese since it is so hard to find in my state. My local H Mart has sacks of rice stacked everywhere, but the “Japanese” rice they offer is actually domestic rice grown in California.
In Canada it’s the same, most of our “Japanese”/sushi rice is from Cali too. It’s way cheaper too of course, like 25-35 CAD for 15lbs. The actual Japanese rice is like 55-80 CAD for 15lbs, which makes sense I guess cause shipping but still 😢
@@C8H11NOtwo Wow, $80 is expensive. When I lived in California I bought premium imported koshihikari for $40 for 15 lbs. I now live in North Carolina and rarely find imported rice. When I do, it's around $55. My son once tried to make rice and messed up two pots full. I told him if he was going to practice cooking rice he needed to use the junky stuff. He honestly had no idea how difficult it is to find imported rice or how expensive it is.
Cal rose is perfect everyday rice for budgeting but when I go to Tokyo central or other Japanese stores I do like getting better rice and can definitely tell the difference, but than it’s pricey so I don’t want to use it everyday lol

Why is basmati more than jasmine?, flavor wise they're pretty similar, although i also prefer basmati. They're both great flavor packed rice, i also like wide Spanish yellow rice because it's perfect for anything cheesy or with stewed tomatoes.

@@Juneessarythankfully we don't have those in the area of the world I'm in, I have got ants in my rice storage but that's the only bug I've had infest my rice.
It's because aging rice serves the purpose of making it very fluffy and not sticky. And that is not what we're looking for in glutinous rice. The only thing aging it would do is increase the cooking time.
As a Chinese, I’ll have to explain that not all sticky rice are the same… Probably in regions all across Laos people have the same type of sticky rice but you can actually find different types in these grocery stores: basically the rounder the grains are, the sweeter they taste
We malay eat sticky rice as for special occasion not a staple but it was enjoy by many as it can be a delicacy for savoury n dessert mostly cook with coconut milk to make it more rich and tasty.
Probably same in other maphilindo countries. We make suman, puto bumbong, puto, ketupat etc.. but not for ordinary daily food. 😅and we always use coconut milk
@@markv1974 ya I realized that we have almost similar cuisine ☺️ and when I discovered that sticky rice is the staple food of lao people from a friend I cant believe at first how this rice type can be eaten everyday because some people get bloated if they eat too much of sticky rice on one go like me huhu. But I learned people from majority Austroasiatic countries eat more of sticky rice than other south east asian countries which are austronesia or mixed with both. I also heard that people who eat sticky rice often get delicate beautiful skin 😊

@@SaengsKitchen As Indonesian we eat mostly what you call Jasmine rice in this video. And traditionally we eat it with barehand, but now switched to spoon and fork for hygiene reason.
@@Pike737Hands are always dirty, even if people wash them before eating they will touch other things as well like the table, drinking glass, their clothes, fix their eyeglasses or a strand of loose hair, scratch their nose, check their cell phone, etc etc. When you eat with utensils it doesn't matter.
My best friend growing up was Laos and I still remember all the meals her mum made when I would stay, I loved my best friend but honestly I started wanting to stay over more purely for her mums cooking and sticky rice 😂❤

as a asian, its great to see that that similar to the philippines we aren't seen enough or at all (really a lot of south east asia as a whole); and its cool that we choose the same brand for rice!! i don't eat the sticky rice variable that much, but the plain not sticky rice one is great!!! now i want some rice!!!
My family likes the short grain apple brand sweet rice. It doesn’t get too mushy when you reheat the leftovers compared to the long grain varieties. 🇱🇦
3 ladies brand always! I tried this korean brand, butbdont know the name. It is small and round which was a new look for me. It was one of the best sticky rice I've tried and not difficult to get right. Each grain felt like it's own and was never too sticky if over cooked and could reheat and still feel new.
I really like rice but my girlfriend really Loves it. The rice selection at our home is pretty good for Indian, Italian, Chinese, Thai, etc. dishes with appropriate rice types, but we've never made sticky rice. Don't think I've even eaten it outside of sweet Thai deserts. Will have to give it a try! Thanks for the inspiration!

That’s the rice I used to buy before the pandemic, but I can’t find it anymore here in Missouri. We lost our primary Asian grocery store to the health department.
As an East European, I am having a hard time finding, picking amd sometimes filling the difference. You might be surprised that we have our own sorts, growing here in the Balkans, but yes, we do, and they're at least 6-7 different sorts (most are semi long, not much rounded, middle to none stickiness, kinda similar flavours). Many Asian sorts and brands are difficult to be found here, there're very few Asian supermarkets too. We also use some Italian and Spanish rices as well.

One question from a not rice country: I enjoy rice on the sticky side. Why is it, that rice experts always insists on washing the rice to clear the natural starch? It makes the rice sticky. (or is it just when you want fluffy rice?)
A Hispanic man said he makes sticky rice too. You won’t believe what he served. It was watered down boiled rice. I explained sticky rice is a certain type of rice not regular rice cooked to make it feel sticky! Maybe explain that in a video. Sticky rice can’t even be cooked like a regular rice. The problem I have is that if I choose a sticky rice product in a ‘china town’ restaurant it’s sticky but also well formed and translucent. If I try making it, I soak overnight, but it’s not showing that form and translucency.
The best food ever was a Thai food restaurant that served spring rolls & sticky rice & mango, it was SOOOO good... The spring rolls had a dip they called "peanut sauce" but it *looked like oil, w/chopped nuts on top* .., I hate all other peanut sauce & I always *hope & pray thatll I'll find someone somewhere* that'll tell me *how to make that sauce.* If you know, *plz tell me* 🙏
My wife and i bought a 20 lb bag of jasmine rice from costco. I think some grain bugs were in there. they bred everywhere and ate my breadcrumbs. I freeze it now. But big serious thank you to all the hard working rice farmers out there
I worked with some Laocians who became good friends. They had a dipping sauce for sticky rice that was very simple. chili flakes and a liquid that had a yellow/gold hue. but I cannot remember what it was. seasamee oil, perhaps? Do you happen to know what might of been used?
Do you know if anyone has tested sticky rice for arsenic? I saw testing decades ago for non sticky rice in the US -- all I remember is that Texas has tons of arsenic, and short grain white CA organic was the lowest in arsenic.

I love Thai Jasmine rice, it’s great for a lot of things and much cheaper than basmati (though I prefer Basmati for biriyani and pilau type dishes).

But isn't storage gonna be harder due to rice bugs (idk what they're called in English), so there's a risk of losing your rice to those bugs.

Quite a difference from basmati rice since the older the basmati rice is, the better it becomes.

I read where rinsing rice 3 times before cooking helps get rid of arsenic.
