The recent Deltarune Chapter 3 Status Update is a bit weird and I wanted to discuss it today to talk about the weird development Deltarune is currently in and why I think that potentially we could be seeing Chapter 3 this year assuming Chapter 4 and 5 don't release along with it.

Undertale is a game made by Toby Fox. TobyFox also made Deltarune. It features characters such as Frisk Sans Papyrus Flowey Toriel Asgore Alphys Undyne and W.D Gaster. However today I don't believe we see Gaster but and no Gaster Follower sightings. This isn't a mod but don't expect to do things like Undertale Genocide or Deltarune Snowgrave with Kris and Noelle. Deltarune Characters aren't here such as Kris Susie Ralsei Noelle Berdly Queen and Spamton and Spamton NEO. I used a little bit of the Undertale OST and Deltarune Soundtrack in this video.

Some people seem to have forgotten Deltarune is toby's DREAM PROJECT, its literally supposed to be his magnum opus, undertale was a side thing to him
Deltarune is incredibly personal to him and he's inserted a lot of real life references that only very few people would have gotten, he's technically been working on deltarune since 2010

2:37 I think it’s safe to say why Toby isn’t showing us anything related to Chapter 5 at this moment is because he’s aware of the theories made surrounding Deltarune and especially the Chess theory which suggests we’ll fight the Knight in Chapter 5.
(also just wanted to say if Toby does follow his plan to release all 3 chapters at once it’d be such an awesome coincidence if they were all finished by September 2025.)

I would be fine if chapter 3 were released on its own, but I also think there’s a decent chance that Toby wouldn’t be. As he already mentioned, chapter 3 is going to try something a bit different, and he’s admittedly a bit nervous about it’s overall reception. Perhaps not releasing it alone is so important to him because even if people don’t like 3, there are still two other chapters that fans might find more satisfying, making it a safer bet overall.
HalfBreadChaos have made few videos about a year ago, talking about deltarune unfinished elemental system. What is it? It's easy to explain: every enemy has bullets, and they have certain element. If you have armor that blocks this element, you can actually be defended much more from the attacks of the enemy than when you have maximum amount of defense, as some of the elemental bullets can pierce the armor if it can't defend from that element.
Like I said: HalfBreadChaos have made about five videos about it, covering more and learning more about it, and I am sure that the elemental system will be added in the full deltarune version, and being why it takes longer to make. It means that your armor and weapons will be much more and less effective to certain enemies.
Forgot to mention that it will make other chapters release sooner. Anyways, have anyone noticed that Berdly theme (Smart Race) is basically the kings theme (chaos king)?
My guess is that Chapter 3 is short and ends in a massive cliffhanger or some dramatic misunderstanding. I understand why it's important to not end on that note.

The reason they're focusing mainly on chapter 3 could be, because (as said in the summer newsletter) the chapter will try something different, so that could be something, that needs more polishing, like the now scrapped "stealth misson"
I personally have no problem for how long it takes, as long as its good i will enjoy it

Yeah I feel like the Undertale series will be something where fans have to have a lot of patience for, and honestly, it isn't that bad, time flies, time goes fast, it's just around the corner and it's gonna feel like that when it releases and then even 3 years later I'm gonna be like "dang, chapter 1-5 felt like it released just recently"

I think they are focusing on all chapters, he’s just talking about 3 mostly because it’s the closest story wise to what we know and he doesn’t want to spoil later chapters. I think it’s AMAZING that we don’t know anything about C5, playing it completely blind would be insane. I can see 3 being done very soon if not now, so the team are or will be focusing on 4/5 which I think are already decently developed. I can see 3-5 being released next Christmas. Also to avoid spoilers I’m just gonna delete UA-cam for when 3/5 release until I’ve finished them
Same, I'll avoid UA-cam like the plague once Chapters 3-5 come out until I've finished their normal routes, secret bosses, and any potential weird routes.

I think it's probably closer to releasing than you might be expecting, since he mentioned working on chapters 3-5 at around the same time and is probably only mentioning chapter 3 stuff because perhaps he doesn't want to spoil stuff from later chapters
Yeah, but he’s outright stated that barely anyone is working on chapter 4, and in the 2022 status update, he also pretty much said nothing was being done in chapter 5, so unless he was lying, it seems more realistic to think that they really have only done chapter 3, with very small work on the others
I am a pretty patient person but just like you i was also was confused about the repeat of "chapter 3 is almost finished". I obviously don't have a problem with them taking their time but this situations feels a little weird
I also agree it might be a good idea to split the chapters instead of releasing a bundle although I'm not sure how would prices work if that were to happen. I don't think people would be upset by this change and it would reduce the chances of getting accidentaly spoiled

If I was in charge of deltarune’s release and I had completed versions of chapters 3, 4, and 5 ready to go right now, I’d still wait a month in between releasing each one. That would give each chapter at least a little time in the spotlight.
I think that if Toby decides to drop 3-5, it’ll be sometime in late 2024 at the very earliest, but I feel like he’s less likely to drop Chapter 3 by itself because he already changed his mind once
My actual theory on it is that *because* Chapter 3 is so close to the end, *maybe* they slowed down development on it and they started focusing more on 4 and 5 since they need a lot more work (keep in mind the wording in this newsletter was "We are continuing to work on Chapter 3" not "We are *focused* on Chapter 3"). Also this is an extra thing to take into consideration (taken from the 2020 status update):
"My true design style is to reach the moment where we have to make something, then suddenly think of something different at the last minute. This is always how it's been with me and my work. It feels like no matter how much I plan, everything comes down to what I think of at the last second…"

Even just a one month, or one week, gap between chapters 3, 4, and 5 being playable would be hugely appreciated. I want to be able to digest them separately and be able to see each chapter quickly enough to avoid spoilers. Plus the hype and speculation trains following chapters 1 and 2 have been magical experiences so far.
Exactly, I’d want to savor each Dark World & it’s characters without getting spoiled too deep by speedrunners.
If im being honest, I think they WILL be releasing the chapters individually despite what he said before, and my reasoning is actually not based on what Toby has told us, but instead what Gamemaker has stated about a recent new feature; the game_change() function. Some developers for Gamemaker specifically stated that the feature was developed for and with Toby Fox himself. The purpose of the function is to allow developers to create game "launchers" where you can create multiple project packeges for games and have one central executable that launches them, which was obviously intended fot the Deltarune launcher. The benefit of this is that it means they can keep their project files neater, instead of what Toby CURRENTLY does in his code, which is have an if statement check what Chapter the player is in before deciding what certain interact texts should say (see the bathroom objects between chapter 1 and 2 for reference). In addition to being able to make the files neater though, it also means he can release each chapter as individual "DLC" files that just add to your game folder through Steam or whatever other platform you have it in, making it easy to release the game chapter by chapter if he wanted.
Since I go look myself to see this function, I will add: go to the page which spoke how to use this function (type Gamemaker game_change function to find it), and you will see, in the example, something very, very interesting...
I'm glad Toby is taking his time and making sure it's as polished and enjoyable as possible, I don't mind waiting a few more years, I've got other stuff in my life

You make a good point about the massive content drop and trying to avoid spoilers. I wish Chapter 3 was out this year and I don’t have much to look forward to at the moment but I think I can bear the wait
I think the reason why Chapter 3 is not done yet is because they are working on all 3 chapters at once, but, they are focusing in only giving status updates on Chapter 3, and letting the next chapters updates for latter, I believe Chapter 3 is around 95% done, Chapter 4 is 55-60% done and Chapter 5 is 15-20% done

I completely agree with everything you said. If he did release 3-5 at once, chances are i wouldnt finish all the chapters untill youtubers started to make videos on it and spoil everything. Also, i think everyone would be happy about ch3 releasing this year. Even if its a payment issue, he could just do paid updates. Im not sure if thats a feature on steam, but if it is that could be a very good way to solve that problem, and also he could make other chapters DLC’s aswell, similar to poppy playtime, instead of paying for 3-5 with 4-5 not playable.

Even if paid updates aren't a thing he could add them like microtransactions in a free update so that you can pay to unlock a chapter. This way it would also work on console because i dont think they have steam

I think toby could release each chapter at a time, he doesn't need to release all 3 chapters at once. this would also help toby and his team to improve each chapter at a time rather than working on all of them at the same time
even with the 3 chapter release at once thing, i hope they'll be like a week apart or something because i don't want to rush through all 3 just so i don't see chapter 5 spoilers. can you imagine how the community would react to 3 secret bosses at once? it's going to be everywhere. if i go on the internet like at all i'm going to see chapter 5's secret boss and i want to experience the chapters fully without having to rush

I kind of understand Toby and why he takes so, so long on his work. I myself have imagination of multiple games, stories, characters, all made in my head. So if I would be about to make the thing I'm dreaming of to make, its not like I will just be able to sleep until it's done, no matter how long it takes.
I actually think that is foreshadowing for some sort of foreshadowing for some sort of nightmarish presence in the upcoming chapters.
It's a little weird this is the second time that we've seen content be cut out entirely from chapter 3. Its part of the process ofc but i feel we didn't see nearly this much out of chapter 2.

@@DylanDaDumb True. We still never saw THIS much even afterwards though. If anything, they added MORE (remember toby saying how small the city is). My suspicion is that there's so much experimental gameplay in this chapter that a lot of gameplay concepts have to be cut for it to stay fun.
Something I think people forget is that Toby’s attention to detail will be put on full extreme with this game.
Chapter one had two different ending outcomes, and whether you fought the secret boss or not, not bad amount of possibilities.
Then chapter took those into account, changing the chapter a bit along with the two endings, whether you fought the secret boss or not( also with both either you fought or spared them) and a weird route making more ways the next chapter could play out change.
With chapter 3 going to 4, the amount of different ways you can play out the story will increase, meaning that of course we have seen more progress on chapter 3. Chapter 5 has to take into account everything you have done from the previous chapters, 3, and 4 aren’t even fully done yet so some things could change causing them to change things in 5.
Toby loves putting it detail and this game by the end will have a lot of them, not to forget the fact that this is his baby, sure undertale was also a project he loved, but Deltarune came first, and he is pouring his heart and [heart-shaped object] into it. So allow him to work as long as he needs on it so that we don’t get a game that had the S.B. treatment (if you get what I mean).

I feel like toby should release each chapter one at a time but it depends if he is quick enough to developing all 3 chapters but i doubt it
I don't think toby will go back on his decision and release Chapter 3 alone on the Deltarune anniversary mainly because then people would quickly go and try predict the rest of the chapters, and also because we would quickly go back to be starved again for more. HOWEVER I don't think it take 3 more year to release those Chapters, despite how slow Deltarune development is going, I think there a good chance we might get it in 2024

I know its wishful thinking but i also really hope Toby changes his mind and releases Ch3 on its own. I dont want the game to be rushed and theres no way theyre gonna finish all three chapters anytime soon unless theres massive Ch4+5 progress we just havent been told about for surprise reasons (which i highly doubt), but releasing Ch1 and 2 separately and then say "Ch3-5 release all at once!" is just REALLY painful in terms of content drought. And that just isnt healthy for a game that releases episodically. Which even with Ch1 and 2 being framed as a Demo... its releasing episodically. And theres still Ch6 and 7 after Ch3-5. So we arent even waiting for the rest of the story, were waiting just for the middle part rn. Having to wait 2 years inbetween Chapters is already A Lot. But going from the Ch1-2 wait to THIS? Thats the sort of thing that makes me fear for the games ability to keep the hype afloat untl release. Just look at the Ciconia Phase 2 situation for comparison: It feels like a few hyper-passionate fans surrounded by a ghost town. As a fan of both UT/DR and WTC, i cant help but fear DR going in that direction if things continue like this.
Also fully agree with the point about Spoilers. Theres basically no way you could avoid Spoilers for a simultaneous Ch3-5 release unless you completely remove yourself from Online spaces for a while, which just isnt really always feasible in todays world. A DR Chapter release is just too BIG of an online phenomenon to completely avoid spoilers even if you do your best to say, mute every relevant term you can think of.
I really want Deltarune to be the best it can possibly be, because from what weve seen its really shaping up to surpass even Undertale, and you can tell Toby is putting his lifeblood into this. But the current "Ch3-5 release"-plan in combination with the incredibly vague info on progress does not give me hope when it comes to keeping the hype anywhere close to alive.
I agree. It makes so much more sense for Toby to release Ch3 by itself considering it’s practically done. Then we’ll be able to live off of that chapter easily until 4 is done, maybe 5 as well. The good news is that Toby has a larger team now, so development will be much faster.
this is also kinda cope, but its possible that chapter 3 has been near the end of development for a while because they are putting more resources into chapters 4 and 5. its not very likely, but possibly they havent been telling us about the progress of 4 and 5 because at the rate of development is quick and they want a big surprise for the release. again though, this is very cope

Because you always know that there's gonna be those couple dozen youtubers who beat it it 10 minutes after it's release and post videos about it with the most spoiler thumbnails you've ever seen. And there's gonna be stuff all over Twitter and other platforms too, probably
Honestly i feel like toby's just trying to keep as much info of 4 and 5 as hidden as possible, like we know that chapter 3 is kinda early 1900s cowboy or greaser themed, and he for one reason or another wants the theme of 4 and 5 kept under wraps.

Something else people have to consider is that, y'know, man's gotta eat. He clearly wants to work on Deltarune, but it's not gonna put food on his plate or keep a roof over his head while it's still in development. He doesn't have big studio or publisher money for that, and everything is getting more expensive over time
Don't get me wrong, it's great seeing him work on other projects in the meantime, especially big names like Pokémon. He definitely deserves the recognition. I'm sure the merch sales from UTDR helps a lot too. But needing to sustain himself is definitely going to eat into Deltarune's development in ways that even he can't predict, especially right now
he still makes money from Undertale and from people buying the OST
@@Volian0 While UTDR does have a very dedicated fanbase, it's not one that's on such a scale that it can fund development full-time especially after all these years. And don't forget that merch money doesn't just go to Toby, it goes towards any material costs and between everyone else who works on the products too
im conflicted because I both really want more deltarune but I also do not want the game to be rushed. when it was originally announced that 3-5 would all come out at the same time I did have some concerns that it could be a very long time before another deltarune release

i wish deltarune would get released one chapter at a time since, if all three released i would wanna see as much as possible on my own, instead of getting secret boss spoilers after playing. i wish people would be more discreet about youtube thumbnails so i wouldn't have this problem in the first place, but youtube is youtube.

honestly if you have to use youtube while potential spoilers for something you like is out, just unfocus your eyes when scrolling, doesn't work for everyone but it saved me from a lot of Spider-Verse spoilers a few months back

Something i noticed about this current newsletter is how it ONLY teases cut content for chapter 3? you would think we would at least get a single sprite that will be used like we usually do, but its all cut content. this tells me chapter 3 could be soon and toby doesnt wanna spoil anymore of it when its gonna be out in a month or so

Remember that he also has been busy with a few other things, such as creating the soundtrack for the most recent Pokemon games, and based on their success, he's probably also worked/working with them on the next game's soundtrack as well.
If I'm being honest, I could theoretically see Toby releasing a demo of chapter 3 on deltarune'sanniversary. Just enough to not let the fandom starve, but too little for us to know every single detail. This is definitely not gonna happen, but oh well

I honestly thought it was really adorable the man got to meet a childhood hero and participate in his dream project. The "chapter 3 is almost completed" stuff is definitely Toby being nebulous as always, which is to be expected.
I’ll be honest the fact that he has a team, there should be no excuse to have not gotten the WHOLE game done by now. It’s not that big of a game for a whole team, as I’ve seen single indie developers make bigger and better games with less time. Toby is just lazy or slow, or both

@@Itariatan The reason I say so is because I work in engineering, so we have to work on large projects and when we promise a deadline or a timeline for a project or its' date, we stay loyal to it. Unless Toby has been working only one day a week, I can only surmount this to laziness. 3 whole years and barely any progress. If he was working a regular week schedule on this he would have gotten much farther by now, even with the occasional side project.
@@cartmemes5034 His team is small, first of all. Second, he's put out two chapters, with multiple music tracks, spanning several hours, with tons of hidden stuff, new sprites, new bullet patterns, new overworld designs, etc, etc. FOR FREE.

Biggest issue with 3 chapters at once would be avoiding spoilers tbf, and time taking it in as well. I wouldn't want to have to rush through everything and avoid the internet in that time, or just get spoiled. Would be neat if there's at least a bit of time because by the time I'd get to ch5, hell even finish ch3, the whole of youtube and all of the internet will have spoiled all chapters already... Totally wouldn't mind to just have following chapters as dlc, or just like chapter 1 and 2 did it as kinda seperate things, and get just ch3 for now.
Also it would give cibles time to separately make ai deltarune chapters, because you know we want ai deltarune for every chapter eventually
At least from what I remember of, chapter 3 is supposed to be a unique chapter on it's own right, not to mention, it also is gonna heavily focus on characterization and not the lore, so characters like the dreemurrs are gonna take spotlight during this chapter. Another thing that also backs this up, is the fact that Toby mentions 3 being composed of many different areas.
Chapter 4 at least from what I thought saw, was gonna be a standard Deltarune chapter, so we might get it pretty sooner than we think really. Even looking back at the status of 2022, chapter 4 is supposedly MOSTLY done, so they might just get on to it with chapter 5 from there.
Also worth mentioning, Toby writes each newsletter, in two months, not 3 at least from what I saw in the spring newsletter, so we might just get lucky and get a situation like chapter 2's live stream and get one next year hopefully. Really, it seems like it's all gonna come down to chapter 5 and how it will play out. Most likely through, it's gonna be heavy on the lore since it's the middle of the game and it has to leave something of a cliffhanger for us to get more invested as we wait for chapter's 6 and 7.
Only thing I am really worried is if the code for chapter's 0, 8, 9, and 10 are actually real. If they are... that's gonna be a LONG wait for the game to be finished, but one I am fine with. Just surprised if it's true, that it's gonna be done in the 2030's. If not, then I am still gonna be hyped, since Deltarune is really gonna be it's own thing. Man, it's really gonna be interesting, since at least for me, Undertale and Deltarune offer up their own ways what they offer in each game!
reading the newsletter just made me really happy for some reason. i really enjoyed just reading toby’s experiences with zun and the new merch is so cute, i love the sleepover shirt. but yeah in terms of deltarune chapters 3-5 i really hope toby changes his mind and just releases chapter 3 on its own. every time there was a status update, toby kept talking about how close he was to being finished with chapter 3, but it’s still not here. even now, he’s still making pretty big changes to the game and it kind of scares me, because it doesn’t sound like chapters 4 and 5 have been getting much attention at all, so if hes still planning on releasing them together then we’re gonna have a really long wait. i can see how this would make some people angry, i think its so much better that hes taking his time and trying to make each chapter as good as possible. i cant tell you how sad i would be if chapters 3-5 just came out in like 3 months but they were all super rushed and not as good as they could’ve been. tbh when i first heard that chapters 3-5 were getting released together i was a little bummed out, idk why it would just feel better if they were more spread out. it’s possible and at this point even likely that toby will release chapter 3 on its own, which i think would be great. i really hope this is what he does. you said it might even be like theres one chapter a year, which would be the absolute dream but is definitely never going to happen. but you were right when you said toby wants this game to come out more than anyone, he even said himself he couldn’t really sleep until chapter 3 was finished. i just hope we don’t have to wait too much longer, it would suck if we had to wait like 7 more years for more content. chapter 3 has to be so close at this point, but theres really no way to tell when it will be released.

It would be the coolest thing ever if chapter 4 and 5 are already finished and for some reason they’re finishing chapter 3 last. There’s a -10% chance of that happening but it shows how staved I am for new content that I would even think of that

Nah i guessed straight away that it would either be late 2023 or early 2024 i think this just means that september of 2024 is indeed the true release date of the chapters and if that is the case well kinda expected tbh considering it is 3 chapters and chapter 2 even if it was bigger thane the rest took three years to make all by itself
I still believe 2024 is entirely possible, it's just a shame we haven't been told the status of 4 or 5 in a year now. I don't agree with the people saying the game won't be ready til 2026, but also can't be sure with the 2024 date. Everythting we know could point us there, but not telling us if 4 and 5 are collectively 10 or 80% complete leaves so much up in the air, and not mentioning them at all gives the impression to people not looking too much into it that it's just 3 being worked on.
I think that it will come in 2025 with the 10th Undertale anniversary.

Back shortly before the release of the Spamton Sweepstakes, my prediction was late 2024. With the anniversary newsletter, I no longer believe that will be the case, and we're probably looking at a 2025 release. If I'm pleasantly surprised, then nice, but I'm being realistic here. If CHP.3 isn't done by December, it might even be early 2026.

I really doubt deltarune 3,4,5 will release later than 2024 since those 3 chapter has been in development at the same time and as we talking now i think the chapter 3 is done and they're in late development for chapter 4 and somewhat mid or early late for chapter 5

Lets say for example that chapter 3 is worth 10$ and the price tag is gonna include chapter 1 & 2 in it so it's 30$ and you could easily add 10$ for every chapter until the end
And yeah I agree 100% on chapter 3 releasing this year and I would happily wait 2~3 years gap between chapters but personally I would like chapter 6 & 7 to release together because I can't that time for the finally

If they were to release chapter 3 by itself, I think prices would work like the smash ultimate dlc. What I mean by that is we would pay one big price, then get chapter 3 and each chapter upon release

i think you might be on the right track. at least, i hope. what i don't wonder is if chapter three turned out to be more than toby was initially expecting (iirc, similar has happened in the past with toby). so, realizing chapter three was pretty meaty on it's own esp after ch 2's reception, might be tidying up behind the scenes and focusing on three in preparation for letting us know what's up. there may be a few things they have to do behind the scenes as a studio prior to making that public knowledge, though - ie if there was ch 4 and 5 merch planned, etc, that would need to be put on hold and relevant details worked out

Given there was basically a 3 year gap between all of Toby's releases (2015 for Undertale, Deltarune in 2018, Chapter 2 in 2021) I always assumed it would all come out in Sutumn 2024.
I'm surprised 3 isn't flat-out finished at this point (maybe it's just testing and tweaking) but given he's working on all the Chapters at the same time, things still seem on track. The same way an animated show takes a year to release a Season, but it takes a total of 8 months to produce and individual episode.
Also, speaking personally, I'm happy just getting 3 stuff teased for now. I like as much as possible to be surprise, and it Toby starts teasing 4, that could easily bleed over into 5.
I’ll be honest the fact that he has a team, there should be no excuse to have not gotten the WHOLE game done by now. It’s not that big of a game for a whole team, as I’ve seen single indie developers make bigger and better games with less time. Toby is just lazy and probably slacks off

To be honest, I really don't like the episodic release for this game. Episodic release format only works when you have an at least somewhat consistent release schedule, and the episodes don't come out too far apart from each other. The gap between the episodes is way too long for me to remain invested in the story. I remember when Chapter 2 came out, I remembered almost nothing of chapter 1, so I really couldn't get into it. All of this is made worse by the fact that there are going to be 7 chapters. We are not even half-way through, and I'm already lost and don't remember what happened in the first two chapters. I think I won't play the new episodes when they come out, I'll wait for all 7 of them to be out and then play them all together, I simply can't enjoy the game as it's currently being released. To be clear, I have no complaints about how long it's taking him to release them, each chapter has a ton of content and making video games is a very long and hard process. My problem isn't that it's taking him a lot of time to make them, my problem is that I would rather wait 30 years for him to release one big good complete game, then wait a couple of years to get 1/7 of a story that I will forget by the time the next part is released.
