Don't Turn Your Shoulders In The Golf Swing ➜ WHY?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 чер 2024
- In this video, you'll learn why you shouldn't just turn your shoulders in the golf swing and the feel you should do instead. This instruction is key if you want your shoulder to move efficiently and provide the best possible backswing. The shoulders on their own can't make a huge movement or rotational angle. But, when combined with other big muscles as I show here, you can make a great backswing and downswing.
No complicated mechanics or swing tips are required to move your shoulders properly. Beginners through to better players can use these tips to play better golf and shoot lower golf scores. Use these powerful moves to start the takeaway and begin hitting it solid and more consistent. For you to improve your golf swing this is a key concept and will no doubt be a game-changer in your golfing journey.

I had been fighting the dreaded S*****s at the range and tried this drill. Great feeling to initiate the backswing and not focused on 1000 different things. Weight shift is seamless and I went from hitting a fade to straight and slight draw. Thank you!!!
Thanks Russell, glad it helped you out. Cheers
This is a real game-changer Troy, haven't heard anyone explain the backswing like this. Can't wait to practice it. Cheers
Thanks, glad it helped you out. Cheers
🔴 Thanks for watching. Are you going to implement this move in your golf swing? Do you have any questions about this video that you don't understand? Let me know in the comments below 👇
I really enjoy your lessons, you explain things very well. Thanks.
Thank you Harold
Your instruction always resonates, Troy. Thanks.
Thanks Dave, glad you enjoyed. Cheers
Best explanation I have seen yet ! I am a newbie and was actually doing this early … then I watched some other videos … got confused … actually started losing distance … watched your video …. Did your drills … BOOM ! Not consistent, but when I make solid contact …. The ball goes !
Thanks Jeff, really appreciate your support!
Excellent instruction! The thought of turning the Latissimus muscles vs the shoulders makes the swing sequence easier to visualize
Thanks Danny, glad it helped you out. Cheers
What a fabulous video, as I've matured i found turning harder, tried pulling my right foot back to get behind the ball, very inconsistent, big hooks or blocks, just tried the drills and can do these with relative ease
Thanks Richy, glad it helped you out. cheers
Thanks for a great video Troy. Really like your instruction, graphic and easy to understand.
Thanks Peter, appreciate it. Cheers
Hi Troy, thanks for the video, I have really been struggling with my game and am excited to concentrate on your fine instruction. Thanks again.
Mark from Iowa
Thanks Mark, appreciate it. Cheers
So nice to see you teaching such basic fundamentals, this has been around since the beginning of the game. really not rocket science, good teachers teach simple things, mastering the basics is the key to this wonderful game.......... great vid for all to see......
Thanks John, appreciate it. Yes, sometimes the simple ones are often the best. Cheers
Excellent tip Troy! Placing the butt end of the shaft into the belly button to practice the backswing and to show how it feels to activate the larger muscles is a great idea. I'll definitely be using this drill since this is an issue with me.
Thanks John, yes I use this one all the time. Cheers
Awesome exercises to develop the mechanics. Going to put them to use when I warm up.
Thank you for introducing them.
Took a five iron today on the range. I hit one so solid , the feel was great. The ball went a real good distance.
I want to get this feel more.
I think your exercises here will help me me do that
Thanks William, glad it helped. Cheers
This video is excellent! Thanks for the insight. Fully intend to practice this today. Many many thanks from here in America. God Bless.
Thank you, appreciate it.
Excellent video .
Thanks
Thanks Virinder, appreciate it.
Thanks for clariying this. I went down a rabbit hole with this one and lost my golf game for a while because I didn't understand the difference with the shoulder turn. I took a lesson last week and the instructor told me to quiet down my legs and not get them so involved which is a little bit opposite of some points you make in this video. He told me it was leading to my hips turning too much and therefore not achieving a nice tight coil at the top of the golf swing. Anyway I started striking so much better after his lesson almost immediately even off tight muddy winter lies. Be interested to hear your thoughts on that.
Thanks for watching, yes it just depends on the individual golfers traits. Sounds like you were rotating your hips too much which is unusual for most golfers. Ideally, you want to get that separation between hip and shoulder turn in the backswing that gives you that uncoiling and wind up effect in the downswing. Cheers
Explained very well.
Thanks Alan, appreciate it.
That was quite a pleasant surprise Troy. At my age (66) my backswing turn is limited. Concentrating on my lats and core gained me a few more degrees of turn but without any additional strain. Thanks Troy.
Awesome Steve, glad it helped you out. Cheers
Makes sense. Will be trying those driils. I like the idea of getting your lower body and upper body (shoulders) following you're mid- section as you turn it on the backswing. Sounds more complete, less to think about. Everything is working together as one unit.
Thanks Steven
Troy,
How do we maintain the spine angle and stay in posture ? Any drills for it ?
Love your instruction. Excellent stuff.
Thank you, this video should help you out ua-cam.com/video/SF5TjLl7hv8/v-deo.html. Cheers
awesome video! this helped me so much!! Turning the shoulders is a big problem of mine.
Thanks Josh, glad it helped you out. Appreciate it
Very good drill..👍
Thank you very much.
Something I learned this year and it's a total game changer....
Yes, it makes a big difference. Cheers
About to retire for the day, watched this video, got out of bed took a few swings. Now i feel like hitting the driving range. Great tip there!
Thanks, glad it helped you out. Cheers
Great tips
Thank you very much, cheers.
This is an amazingly effective swing thought. I just went to the range and tried it and it was instantaneously better. I could really feel what you mean by "turn the lats". Wow, can't thank you enough for the great suggestion/tip.
Thanks Trafy, glad it helped you out. Cheers
Good observation 👍
Thanks Herb, appreciate it
Loving these videos. Really resonate with me. Should instructors always give drills after lessons given??
And are based in Victoria?
Thank you, yes drills are definitely good. Sometimes just practising a feel will work just as well to get the muscle memory for the new movement. I'm based in Queensland, Australia. Cheers
Great tip thanks. Just tried it out at home and felt a much easier and fuller turn using the upper body as one unit instead of trying to lead. with the shoulders. Going to dedicate my next range session to this. 👍
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed it. Good luck with the next range session and feel free to let me know your results. Cheers
Yes! By turning the lats, core and obliques it feels like a bigger turn!l
Yes, most definitely
Yep, it's a teeter totter move vs a torso turn move and it makes a huge difference where your hands (and therefore the clubhead) will end up in the backswing setting up for failure or success. A person who thinks about their shoulders will end up with a teeter totter move making the club shaft way to steep. For those ppl this drill will feel like their shoulder plane is almost flat even though it's not, they were just so steep with them with the teeter totter move they were doing. This turn also helps with "swooping" the ball as you come into impact. Notice I didn't say "scooping". "Swooping" and "scooping" are very different and the "swooping" feeling of hitting a ball is like nothing else in this world! You feel like you have so much more control and power in the swing. The hard part is as we get tired during a round we get lazy and the lazy fallback is a teeter totter move :(
Thanks, yes it's a different feel, but an effective one for golfers to experience.
I need this. I can smash and compress and 8 iron carry 160 on a good day here in the sunny uk driving range when I’m loose but it’s all arms and random forehand timing (tennis coach here) When I get on the course I feel like a I’ve got a straight jacket on. Gonna use this Troy. Great lesson. Thank you.
Thank you, glad it helped you out. Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers
I’ve literally watched hundreds of videos trying to figure out why I couldn’t make a full turn and I end up lifting the club with a tense left shoulder. Love your explanation on turning the lats. Absolutely worked for me. Just wish I had seen this video 30 years ago.
Thanks Gonzalo, glad it helped you out. Cheers
As someone who has basically just rotated their body around and never thought much about tilt, how much tilt should be incorporated into the swing?
Hi Paul, it's different for every golfer depending on your height and body make up. I like to tilt and bend at the hips until my eyes are round about looking right down at my hands hanging comfortably. See if that feel works for you and let me know. Cheers
@@Hittingitsolid Much appreciated. I will give it more of a go. For me and I don't know why it works this way I lose clubhead speed when the club is more vertical. I'm a 5' tall guy weighing 128 lbs. and 56 years old. Just came from the garage where I hit a number of 9 irons, 8 irons, 5 hybrid, and driver. When I tend to do more of what I would call a wraparound swing which I see in your video at about the 1:45 mark, that is where I get the most clubhead speed. I literally pick up about 6-9mph ballspeed with driver doing the wraparound versus having a low left shoulder and having my body move the shoulders. I'm clueless why it works that way but because I don't hit the ball far, I need all the ballspeed I can get.
@@PaulTomlinson Hi Paul, yes it's different for all golfers. Just play around with it and feel what works best for you and keep working on it. Cheers
I previously inquired about getting a small analysis of my swing so I can see a second eye from an experienced golfer to help me out. Where can I send the video?
Hi Charlie, you can send it to troy@hittingitsolid.com. Make sure you film once from down the line (directly behind the hands) and once from face on. Thanks
@@Hittingitsolid thanks a lot, Troy!
@@ChuckBox- no worries
Thanks! I struggle with the start of the downswing- can you help- I’m a lefty with a 6 handicap
Hi Jack, is there a particular aspect of the downswing you struggle with? Shallowing, weight shift or something else? Cheers
Thanks for the super thanks also Jack, appreciate it
@@Hittingitsolid yes weight shift (spin out) and sometimes too steep are my areas of concern
@@jackmalzahn7810 Ok, would you like me to recommend a couple of my videos that I think will help you best?
@@Hittingitsolid yes I would
Thank You
Will this help prevent coming over the top?
Hi Vincent, it will help. Just depends on what the root cause of your over the top is. It is different for some golfers. Cheers
My problem is trying to get too deep in the backswing. As a righthanded golfer, I collapse my left knee too far in an as a result, I dip my head. Any suggestions?
Hello, this video should help you out ua-cam.com/video/5hrFZ7S6CgA/v-deo.html. Let me know how you go with it. Cheers
@@Hittingitsolid Thanks, I'll be working on these tips.
@@jdwond3673 No problem at all, appreciate it.
That keeps it simple
Thanks Rick, yes often the best way.
This is good, if you are in your twenties - but please, tell people if they are 30 yrs. of age an up to let their left heel come off the ground. Especially if they lack flexibilty or have any kind of injury present or past. If Tiger Woods would have modified his swing at the age of 29, let his left heel lift and allow a bit more hip turn in the backswing, he may have won twice as many majors. Arm swing right then left will also engage and move your lats. Their are way too many golfers out there including the pga tour that are destroying their bodies (esp. their back) keeping that left foot down- i.m.o
Thank you, yes it's a good move and definitely helps golfers move their body in a more natural way and less resistance. Cheers
Is that stack and tilt
Hi Dexter, no, that's not something I teach. Cheers
💫
Thanks
Of course we don't need to turn shoulder more. Beside the impact point is the most important between the ball and the club head, we have enough effort to increase the club head velocity during downswing that comes from the maximum displacement of the club head behind the body without turning the shoulder more.
Yes Yadi, exactly right. Cheers
Instead of turning your shoulder first turn your knees and waist and delay the transition
Hi Jack, yes for just a fraction this happens. Cheers
Exact opposite to what other experts recommend. Why?
Hello, it's not the opposite. But, most instructors don't really explain how the shoulders actually move. They don't move independently much, they get help from the lats and core area. Cheers
Pl advise senior golfers, as their body is not much flexible. Thanks
Hi there, it's the same process, only you won't move your body around as much when you're rotating. And, your hands will be a lot lower in the air at the end of your backswing. Thanks
@@Hittingitsolid Thanks, will the distance compromised with less rotation.. Especially for seniors.
@@abnulhasanshah1402 Yes it will, but you can still generate enough speed to hit the ball far enough.
The golf swing has been made infinitely complicated. It’s not that hard. Set up properly, keep your left arm straight swing back and through keeping the club face square. Shoulders will follow along.
Yes, definitely keeping it simple is the way to go. Cheers
Ball goes straight and far. How can you beat that
Glad it helped you out Joe, cheers.
I find when I concentrate on turning my hips in the backswing that the club often gets too far behind me
Hi David, yes that can happen. The key is to ensure keep some extension in the lead wrist and some vertical hinge as you take the club back. Does that make sense? Cheers
@@Hittingitsolid Thanks Troy, I was able to play 9 holes this afternoon and the ball came off nicely
@@davidc0055 That's awesome David, nice work

This video is being too literal , obviously the shoulders turn with the rest of the body
Hello, yes they turn but not as much as golfers think. Regards
@@Hittingitsolid perhaps, but I could make that same point about every body part that moves in the swing.
@@nyshoefly yes true, every body part needs helps from others to move it.
