    Hi! Good review. However I have a few comments that might address some of the things you mentioned:
    1. The female protagonists are ciri in the kickstarter add-ons and the witches in the images expansion.
    2. I strongly recommend adding the monster hunt expansion. This is a must for me and luckily came in the base KS pledge. It enhances the variety of the experience with more combo advanced cards, an interesting level-up mechanic (mutagens) and monsters that have 6 different abilities and 6 different weakneses that you can learn if you track the monster. Veery thematic.
    3. I strongly agree in the length issue specially in higher player counts. I feel that the game is very good at 3 players but adding players hinder the experience.
    4. Totally agree on the deluxe lack of gameplay content. It looks good but it's just an expensive deluxification.
    Again. Very good review!

    I’d love to see a review of the new Witcher when it’s available, as well as of the two games you mention: Oath- chronicles of empire and exile, and Warrior knights! Seriously - this is my favourite review channel. You two are absolutely brilliant and hilarious! Thanks for the high production values and great insights!

      Hi! Thanks so much! :) it means the world to us that you took the time to check out our video, and that you found it entertaining! We're definitely planning to cover Go On Board's next Witcher game-- we've been stalking the Gamefound campaign since it launched-- so we'll snap up a copy as soon as it's available and give it a good look. In the meantime, we'll see about crafting some reviews for Oath and Warrior Knights! We plan our videos a couple months in advance, so it may be a bit before we get there, but we'll put 'em on the calendar!

    Wow, these were very well motivated critics, and I can see now more clearly what the problem(s) with the game could be. I would love to play/own a good RPG like board game that has a lot of variety and surprises and the Witcher initially attracted me a lot, but your point of critique make my head scratch quiet a bit now, there are some things to consider here.
    Of course, I need to check other opinions as well, but I thank you for making this interesting (and funny!) vid.

    Greetings,
    I see you use sleeves for the cards.
    Are they the ones you buy from the creators of TWOW or did you buy them yourself from a different source?
    I'm asking because I do have the cards from the company but I don't like them much, I tried to sleeve 1 card and it seems like the sleeve is just a bit too large, unlike perfect-size sleeves (e.g. in Magic/YGO).
    What's your opinion on an entire deck sleeved? Is the pile too large? Do the cards slip away?...
    Edit: also, how tall is the decks when sleeved? I'm using some of the expansions and the decks unsleeved are even taller than a double sleeved Commander deck in Magic...

    • @JumbleAndGaff
      @JumbleAndGaff  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for asking! I love talking sleeves.
      The sleeves in this video are NOT from Go On Board, and they're VERY cheap little things-- they're 65 mm x 100 mm 'Thin' sleeves by Swan PanAsia. I ordered them off Amazon here:
      www.amazon.com/dp/B00DOG6RAO?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
      It looks like they're currently out of stock, but packs of the 'Thick' version are still available:
      www.amazon.com/Swan-Premium-Card-Sleeves-65x100mm/dp/B010EJNQC0/
      They're thin, but they've held up well over multiple plays. They're a teensy bit sticky, so the shuffle can be slow, but they don't slide around when you've got them stacked, the fit is nice, and the price is right.
      With these sleeves, my action deck (the tallest in the game) comes in under 5 cm tall, so not quite as towering as a full EDH deck in double Dragon Shields.
      Bear in mind this is without any of the Kickstarter modules that added cards to the Exploration decks-- if you've got those, your Exploration decks will be much taller than mine. In that case, the stickier Swan sleeves might be worth a try, just to keep them from slipping.
      Hope that's helpful. Best of luck out there!

      What can I say. Play something else. I hate this new thing that makes a travesty of every story and source just to make everyone happy. Still what you say is correct they could put 2 sorceress in the core game. But the problem is that you would need the extra skill deck and that is not possible imo. So the fact that they made the mages expansion is a pro to that direction.

  • @Vlad65WFPReviews

    Nice review - do you think adding any of the expansions can "save" it?

    • @JumbleAndGaff
      @JumbleAndGaff  7 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for checking out the video! I have played the game with 2 of the 3 expansions available at retail (Skellige and the Mages expansions). Both of them made the game longer and a shade more of a brain-burner, adding to the dimensions of the game that I already struggled to love. Between the two, I preferred the Mages box, mostly for the twist the Mage class added to the combat system, but neither of them polished away the problems I had with the game itself. That said, I'd be interested to hear opinions on this from folks who backed the KS and received the bevy of smaller expansions included in that.

    Very entertaining review. In your description, one of your questions was ' Is this a 'must-have...' Unfortunately, you did not answer that question so I am left not knowing if, in your opinion, the game is or isn't a must-have. I make the assumption you do not think it is a must-have but I would like to know. I wish you well in attracting more subscribers (I have subscribed).

    • @JumbleAndGaff
      @JumbleAndGaff  8 місяців тому

      Thank you, and that's a great question! In our opinion, The Witcher is NOT a must have. It's a handsome box with a lot of interesting ideas, but its disparate pieces come together to create a game that is overlong, cumbersome, and rather flat. If you'd like to try it, we'd recommend picking up the standard retail version over the Deluxe: it's half the price and still gives you the full game experience (the MSRP for the standard version is $99.99-- we've been seeing secondhand copies going for $65-70, as well). We appreciate the sub, and we're excited for you to see our next video! :) we're in the midst of the editing process on it now, and it's going to be... wild.

    This is a very well articulated critique. I'm so relatively new to board games, especially humongous ones like this game but Even still it's flaws were very apparent to me playing the game. Like you said the length is horrible. I think it's really what's going to weigh the game down overtime.
    It feels to me like an overly designed game. The rule book is so thick and there's so many components but in the end the things you do during the game are so simple it makes me think that they prioritized emulating the video game over making an efficient board game. I noticed this as well playing the stardew valley board game a couple of years ago. I kind of scratched my head at why people want to play board game versions of video games. But to each their own I guess. I haven't played two of the expansions yet that came with the Kickstarter but I've heard that they're good and do add to the game insignificant ways.

    Maybe this is why some games build phases into the play to add some momentum near the end? Good call on the female Witchers. Seems like a 'duh' moment.

    • @RavenDumron
      @RavenDumron 6 місяців тому +2

      The female Witcher part is just out of respect for the lore. This game is set 200 years before the books/show/game, and it is explicitly said during those that there have never been female witchers, making Ciri an interesting exception. In short, they couldn’t add them without angering the core fanbase for not respecting the lore. That’s why they made an expansion with mages, who are known to count both men and women in their ranks.

    • @marz6770
      @marz6770 6 місяців тому

      @@RavenDumron In the TTRPG, female witchers are a thing even if only from the cat school and the video games took a lot from the TTRPG
      I think that's something they could have added because overall it's not that impactful.
      It's usually not something the fanbase cares about until someone brings up that it would be cool to play a female witcher. I'm pretty sure if there were options to play a cat school witcheress, there would not have been any backlash from the fanbase.

      @@kiwisausageTotally get that. I think they did well with staying in-lore yet having Ciri as a time-traveler theoretically able to be there. But she should've been in the base game and I think they shot themselves in the foot not including her.
      That's even more true with the monster trail expansion which makes the monster fights sooooo much better! I found every single reviewer complaining about the same-ish battles because the base game lacks it.
      The worst thing: Nor monster trails nor Ciri are in retail yet. Ciri never will be, the other... I assume it's because marketing is braindead.
      It's really a pity because I feel like a lot of people will see these reviews and turn down the game when imo with the expansions it becomes truly great: Ciri and Mages give those that want female characters a chance to play with them, monster trails make battles more difficult and interesting, Wild Hunt gives player that aren't as competitive a mode to play with friends or family, ...
      The base game though has some great games going for it, mostly the deck building and the exploration/story, but it all falls flat when your selling point (fighting monsters) sucks.

    • @uxjared

      @@couchpotatoe91 Perhaps they, like the real patterns in us and around us, just weren't allowed to be Witchers. Perhaps it was frowned upon and not written about or showcased in any way, much like women artists in the Renaissance. Note, that doesn't mean there weren't any!
      The typical patterns in the universe are complex beyond our comfort, and that means despite our best efforts of creating simple rules, they never actually work out that way.
