      @@thedicetower I think I can assume that it's Tom who said he doesn't have time. Hi Tom! As someone who loves Skyrim too, I can assure you this game is worth it. I've spent 3 days, when work allowed, puzzling over the terrible rules set, writing 6 pages of clarification notes & now have the game down pat. But I tell you this Tom! With that out the way when playing my Orsimer taking him into a Wilderness space, thinking it would be a regular event, I prayed to some Daedra, drew a card & all amazing hell was let loose! I dropped down a hole into a Dwemmer ruin & because of the negative side of the Daedra prayer I had to face an extra enemy in my dungeon crawl that I was not allowed to escape from (I had fallen down a hole, no way out!) - the first Dwemmer Spider stunned me & I was close to final blow, aka out! Ok... I'm getting excited here, but I just wanted to tell you Tom, this game has the major Skyrim feels! I promise. And if you don't want to get all the rules down perfect, it's totally ok to make fuzzy rules judgements just to get through the story. I tell you Tom just try the first campaign, get that random Blades story card, and see if it doesn't pull you in! There's some great Skyrim content here, with so much to enjoy, check it out. :) (I hope you read this, all the best.)

    I've never played the video game, but I really enjoy this game. I play it solo with two heroes.
    Chris is spot on - The rulebook is not designed well, but once you get over the hurdle of learning the game, it's a lot of fun and flows nicely.
    Too bad it's overpriced, and I think the Ashes expansion adds a lot to the base game (more quests, items, and mini-campaigns) which drives the cost up.

    Great Review
    However highly disagree re the comment of "If you are playing solo then you may as well just play the video game." A lot of people play solo games to get away from screens etc.
    It's kind of like saying "You may as well not play board games with people as you could just play a multiplayer video game" :P

      As a solo gamer I also felt marginalized by that comment. But the video does remove a lot of hurdles for the solo gamer. The fact that the experience you get from the two different types of Skyrim is completely different is often overlooked.
      Taking the cost of the game and the hurdles to play it, I wonder if the tabletop experience would be worth it over the video game.

    Does the ideal player count always get used for the scores? It sounds like this game is borderline unplayable at 50% of the advertised player counts on the box... This game does a pretty good of reminding me of the video game, and unfortunately that includes the jankiness. Rule book was pretty awful too, and as a Kickstarter backer, I didn’t receive some of the extras I was promised. Probably the most disappointed I’ve been with something I’ve backed, but I’ve been pretty lucky so far, so that’s not the biggest slight.

  • @garrisonel

    I just started playing the video game for the first time. I'm enjoying it. It's easy to get a little lost in the sauce with all the side quests and such.
    That being said, I feel as if the developers should have took one aspect of the video game and made an adaptation out of it. E.g.- A board game that focuses just on advancing the skills tree, crafting potions, or a dungeon crawl with various caves and fortresses.
    Make a solid design first and then find a way to integrate the theme.
    I'm with Wendy; if I'm going to play a game solo, I'll just play a video game. 🤷‍♂

    This is a fun game for sure, but the rules are garbage. The rules for how the campaign works and how you reset things and just a ton of other stuff is just not spelled out or spelled out very poorly.
    Having said that, it is fun, it feels like Skyrim but I wish this game was streamlined for sure. There's a lot of little fiddly rules that bogged the game down into a three to four hour playtime for one scenario

    • @egoDEATH33
      @egoDEATH33 Рік тому +1

      The rule set is definitely very poor, but they now have an FAQ on their website, which clears up a lot of problems. Personally I think getting over those rules hurdles are worth it because the game really does present a board game version of the video game very well. I think the scenarios are well made, and other than the odd uninspired card, there is some really good content in there, with good writing, that is loads better than loads of other supposed "adventure" board games out there.

Also the video game has a huge amount of mods which allow of infinite replayability including 3 or 4 different skill tree overhauls. New magic systems. Some mods have added new continents to explore. @@RulebooksForYou
      I personally prefer the witcher old world. I was a backer of that, not this. A game similar to this would be Divinity Original Sin the board game. Anyway, the differences between TWOW and Skyrim:
      1)TWOW is primarily a competitive game unless you have the wild hunt coop expansion. Skyrim is a coop RPG.
      2) Each game of TWOW is completed over 1 single gameplay session. Skyrim has a save system and is a campaign based game.
      3) TWOW focuses around deck building and card based combat, with some minor RPG elements. Skyrim is heavily RPG based and has dice-based combat.
      4) The goal of TWOW is to hunt monsters and gain trophies by defeating them. If you have the legendary monsters expansion then there is an additional win condition of beating the legendary monster. Skyrim is quest based.
      Both games take place on a map and have a quest system with numbered cards, which is probably the biggest similarity. TWOW doesn’t have an overarching story and quests revolve around reading a blurb and picking 1 of 2 choices. Sometimes you may need to go from point A to point B. Skyrim’s story is more involved and has deeper quests.

    The board game focuses on the wrong part of the Skyrim videogame imo, namely mechanisms over (visual) immersion. This feels more like spreadsheeting than an adventure. There are better 'overland adventure games' of this type: 7th Continent, HexploreIt, heck...even Legends of Andor has more atmosphere than this dry rattling off of actions. Easy pass.

    • @egoDEATH33
      @egoDEATH33 Рік тому

      I disagree, though at first when learning this game I thought the same thing. Visually this game will never be able to compete with the video game. However the designers also decided not to go down the path of say location tile laying like The 7th Continent. The reason I think they succeeded is that the file of numbered quest cards succeed in creating really engrossing dramatic twists and turns - as you play & your game progresses. Even though yes you only move your figures, and the roaming monsters on a static map of Skyrim, it's what is beneath the surface the counts. This is exactly Skyrim, the intrigue beneath the surface. This game despite its rules problems (now solved with the FAQ on the publishers website) is a success at making a Skyrim board game.

    Really disliked it. The combat is so dull after the first few times. The enemy decks are too thin with little variety.
    I also found trying to be a damage dealing magic user to be worthless. There's almost no upgraded damage spells to acquire. Even if you're lucky enough to find one, then you'll do damage approximately equal to a starting melee weapon. You can't even use the spell when sneaking. I made the mistake of going spellcaster and was basically useless solo and next to useless as a party member (since the big melee hitters took things out before healing was needed anyway).
