WOULD LAYNE STALEY HAVE BEEN SAVED BY MAP?, ALICE IN CHAINS START RECORDING

- Alice In Chains guitarist and songwriter has ackowledged how the MAP Fund has helped him in his drug addiction recovery, but we asked him if it was around in 2002 if his friend and former singer Layne Staley would still be here -- plus he shared the scoop on the new Alice In Chains record.
Layne had tried rehab 13 times, but he could never completely give it up. He tried quitting cold turkey on one of the last attempts at rehab, but that didn't work either. Mad Season is made up of Mike McCready of Pearl Jam and 2 other guys from the Screaming Trees and they all went through rehab. They all got together and dragged Layne out of his condo, got him excited about doing ABOVE album, thinking if he was creative he wouldn't want the drugs, and for the length of time it took to do that, Layne was excited about the project, but it didn't curb his drug habit. MAP worked for Jerry because Jerry wanted it to work for him. Layne didn't want help. You can lead a horse to water, you cannot make it drink.
Other musicians tried to spark a creative flair in Layne to see if they could help him, and he'd light up for the time it took to do the project and then shut down again. Jerry showed him the music for DIED and GET BORN AGAIN, and Layne wrote the lyrics for those songs, but when he showed up to record them, he had dropped to 90 lbs, he lost nearly all his teeth and had a lisp and HE STILL killed the vocals. If you listen to the two times he called into Rockline in 1998 and 1999, he's still Layne, with his humor and wit.
And to pour salt in the wound, MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show.
At the age of 34, he looked more like an 80 year old man. He knew he screwed up, between the drugs and his own depression and then his former fiancee dying, Layne just couldn't find a way to dig himself out of his own mess and at the end with his teeth problems and organs failing on him, he gave up trying.
Layne's whole situation from his drug addiction, to how he died, to how he was found only weighing 86 pounds and the drug paraphernalia, etc is tragic and haunts me when I think about it (and I didn't even know the guy personally).
Thank you. I agree wholeheartedly. If I think about him too much, too hard, tears spring to my eyes. And of course, when I listen to AIC's 'softer side' like Am I Inside or Rotten Apple. 😭 Sadly, Layne loved drugs more than he loved his own life. But just the thought of him choosing a slow suicide dragged out over what? 6, 8, 10 years? before finally passing, about kills me. I simply can't imagine what it did to Jerry and the band--they probably experienced emotional pain like none of us will _ever_ experience. Jerry's lyrics reflect his rollercoaster of emotions, especially on his solo stuff. He had some choice words indeed.
@@jekku4688 it's like seeing your loved ones kill themselves everyday. You feel angry at them and yourself. You feel guilty. It becomes unbearable to see them. But you still love them and it only hurts.
It was so painful that Jerry and Sean didn't even talk to Layne during his last two years of life.
Truly a tragedy on a par with those classic Greek tragedies! 😭
People vilify addicts but if they look closely, an addict is sick, sad, disappointed in theirselves, ashamed, desperate, lonely and depressed. It's doesn't feel good to be dependent on drugs and/or alcohol. It cuts deep to know that everyone looks at you as nothing more than drugged up loser when you know you're more than what they see.
Layne didn't want to see that "Wtf happened to you" look in people's eyes. So he shut himself away. It didn't help that his slow descent into the abyss was witnessed by the whole world. The worse he felt the more drugs he used.....the more drugs he used, the worse he felt. It's a crazy, confusing existence. Like teetering on the edge all the time until you either pull yourself back or finally fall from it. Layne was so talented (far surpassing Kobain, in my humble opinion), yet his every waking minute haunted. I think by the time death came for him, he welcomed it.
Can't we be glad we still have Jerry with us?
Hell yeah! Jerry is amazing!!!!
Jerry was and still is the Mastermind behind AIC.
We are, but we need something new as well.
Seriously! And Sean... I wish people would acknowledge Jerry's commitment as well and appreciate him and Sean for making it through.
OH, WE ARE, honey. WE ARE. 💔
I think that its in poor taste to ask that question to jerry.
I'm certain, based on Layne's last interview and what Mike Starr said on celebrity rehab to Layne's mom about stopping Layne, that Layne made a very conscious decision NOT to be saved. As a former addict of the exact same caliber I can tell you that once that door has been open, it's far easier to leave it that way than to face the uphill battle of closing it again.
You lose the love of ur life and ur in a serious addiction he probably just didn’t care about life anymore.
WARNING: The comments area is filled with dumb comments, don't waste your time and peace of mind reading it.
You could say that about Social Media in it's entirety.
Yet here you are, adding to them.
Live in the present. You can’t change the past. It’s that simple.
William is awesome but will never be as awesome as Layne Staley, RIP Layne!
He had been in rehab multiple times and near end of the decade he had even lost teeth and yet kept at it. Layne is someone who needed to be locked in rehab for a year or more then afterwards have someone watch over him.
"Would this have saved Layne". Yea, there really are such things as DUMB QUESTIONS.
God I miss layne so much.
Why the hell would you even ask that?
u can tell he hated that question. "i dont know cuz that didnt work out obviously"
People throwing shit to DuVall would probably never get over the fact bands carry on...
Ivan Torres also *people carry on
Jerry looks great with his hair this length, wish he'd go there again. So thankful he stayed strong and walked through the fiery hell of watching his BFF die a slow death, and came out strong on the other side. Not unscathed, but stronger, wiser, and still determined to move forward. That takes a very strong man to do that. Also thankful that Jerry, Sean and Mike could take comfort in each other, knowing they were all going through the same thing, and thankful that none of them also chose that route in their grief (though Sean mentioned that that "option" was indeed looming amongst them because of the pain they were in). 💔
You could tell that Jerry was annoyed at being asked if this could have helped Layne.
His lyrics reflect that he was tired of having everyone constantly mention Layne, and that he wanted people to see HIM for his own talents. Sadly, he/they will never be able to separate themselves from Layne the Legend. 😥
I think once you're into heroin as long as Layne was and as deteriorated that he was, there is a low chance of recovery. I'm proud of you Jerr-bear! Keep strong and I can't wait till the next album, love you!
False. You have to WANT IT. Layne stated he didn't want to quit.
I've been struggling with heroin addiction for over 20 years and have tried calling it quits by getting on the methadone etc but I couldn't handle the deep depression and mental cravings. Even when the physical withdrawals passed, I still wanted it. You have to be REALLY ready to move on and leave addiction behind and it's hard. It becomes pretty much all you are and that maddening itch becomes impossible to scratch until you have it. That's just me though...I'm weak, powerless and pathetic. What started as a way to numb all of my pain and trauma became an even bigger burden. A lifelong one at that.
I understand Layne's way of thinking with the 'why bother' attitude. You're miserable with it and miserable without it..you might aswell be miserable and numb. He deserved a better path to follow..not the lonely, dark road to Hell he died on😔
Nellie Silvers I really hope you can one day find your way out of that hole, even if it’s with suboxone or methadone maintenance. The only thing to say to you is that it does get easier without it the longer you’re off it ; even if it takes a year or longer you have to put in the effort . I know I’m telling you something you already know but I know when you’re on that stuff you’re not really living life you’re just trying to be well and spending every last penny on it . Good luck and take care .
@@nelliesilvers1210 Try Kratom. Never had to kick heroin, but 30 years of prescribed morphine, oxy's darvon, demerol, fentynl, xanax. I kicked all that using Kratom. It's a God send!
@@ktothec24 Thank you, hun. I really appreciate your kind words 💜. My methadone dose is quite low now and I don't use as big an amount each time that I used to but still use almost daily😒. I went without it for about a week and although it doesn't seem long at all, for someone who uses daily it's an effort. It was only because it got dry during lockdowns of Australian borders but I handled it better than I thought I would. Pathetically, I used at first opportunity but I at least know I CAN do it when I'm ready.. which I nearly very much am.
Thanks again, bub💜
In theory, MAP could'veve saved Layne Staley. In practicality, MAP wouldn't have saved Layne Staley because Layne Staley didn't want help from anyone offering to save his life. Layne had actually tried rehab several times already but he eventually grew disillusioned with the whole process since none of his prior efforts ever took root within him to actually work.
Layne spent the last 3 years of his life fully aware he was a both a crack cocaine & heroin addict, and that he was most likely on a collision course with a diminished quality of life, and/or a premature death. Yet by this time he'd already conciled himself to his fate.
Britton Thompson.. *GREAT POST* very respectful and honest!!
Grammar Nazi Alert: "Is conciled a new word?" Just curious?
Nobody really knows much about Layne's last year's publicly. This post has Vibes of Adriana Rubio's bullshit book about how Layne said he knew he was dying, he was shiting his pants Etc. I'm sure he was well aware of his addiction no doubt but no one really knows what was going through his head those last years.
Plus the whole thing with Demri probably pushed him even further into the void. Things went to shit after 96’
There's never going to be another Layne Staley and as much as I love Jerry, I'm purely a Layne-era AIC fan only. Nobody does perfect harmonious collaboration like Layne and Jerry. DuVall does a good job obviously but, to me, it's just not AIC without Layne.
R.I.P, Layne. Your wings are no longer denied, babe 💜🤘🏻
I just realised how many times I mentioned Layne... obsessed much..??!😁
@@nelliesilvers1210 aren't we ALL??? 💔
Layne Staley is immortalised through his music and mourned forever by how he chose to live and died. Like everyone, we all wish that we could shake some sense into him and find that spark to reawaken his fight to live and give up drugs. But no-one could.
Can't wait , love you always Alice in Chains !
No. why? simple, he didn't want anybody's help, he tried but he loose at every attempt of rehab he did. He was kind of stubborn when his bandmates told him to do so; one of the closest was Sean Kinney, who never gave up and tried against all odds to contact him, but sadly having no postive results...
We all would've loved to save him, but it was just up to him by getting over the fact his fiancee and his father were late and gone forever, instead of, he joined them and finally, cured himself.
Ivan Torres ...I have been an addict for 16 going on 17 years...it took me I was on and off dope a few times in short periods of time....for any addict to want to get clean they have to first and foremost want to....it doesn't matter if 15 people are saying your dying or you'll lose everything if you don't quit...none of that matters ...and still even if you want it if your not ready you'll got to rehab...Nd the first t hi g you'll do is try and score...most all people that's never been there don't understand...and then when Demri died. 96 ...he was looking nothing but down after thAt ...trust me....its hard ...I lost 2 very good friends ...then after that my pap had a heart attack...then 4 years later my grandmother died of the a brain n tumor and stage 3 lung cancer....if it wasn't for my daughter being on Oct 2014...I don't think I'd be here....a lot of addicts I've known are trying to hide or frog underlying issue...and u til that's fixed ..or better...then it makes it so harder......it tAkes close support and hard work ...and certain songs can be triggers..all g with other things
Ivan Torres I'm not saying what you said isn't true either
His dad is still alive.
He had to want to stop nobody can make you quit
I know this is an old vid, but before reading any comments, I'll just say that this is a very fucked up question. And the interviewer obviously doesn't give a shit about Layne as the amazingly gifted man he was. Layne Staley died from his addiction, and nothing can bring him back. End of story.
The Cantrell laugh is funny as fk !!
R.I.P. Layne Staley
That mustache makes Cantrell look so much older.
jerry knew, refer to the lyrics in black gives way to blue , "it's easier to keep falling", layne knew his job was done here he had no motivation to dig himself out of the hole, "down in a hole and i don't know if i can be saved" what he felt was written in the music brah
BrickUnit "I've eaten the sun so my tongue has been burned of the taste" sounds like drugs didn't do anything for him anymore.
Cantrell wrote this song. It was about his ex girlfriend. Although I suppose the lyrics could be interpreted as battling/losing an addiction.
Melanie Horner song can be whatever you want it to be about ;) like Layne said ... I miss him so much
Katherine Munoz Very true and good point! I had read an interview with Cantrell and he was explaining the meaning. Your point of view sounds much nicer tho ❤️🤘🏻
I just do not think Layne could deal with it. I really miss him but I am glad he no longer suffers.
"wings no longer denied" RIP Layne
Down in a Hole was not written by Layne Staley. The lyrics and music were written by Jerry Cantrell based on his own problems.
“Content and fully aware”
Hi Michelle, I appreciate your candor on this subject, however, I do not think it is that cut and dried. Jerry himself was battleling a nasty coke addiction and I do not think he was in any shape back then to help Layne. I think it was very hard for Jerry to deal with Layne's problems because he pushed everyone away. After his old girlfriend died, then Baker of the same thing, Layne just went into depression. Kicking herion takes monsterous balls since withdraw is a bitch.
I think depression was a bigger factor, but the two together is a letal combination.
He chose not to be saved otherwise he would have answered Sean's phone calls
Layne really died in 96, it just took his body a few more years to catch up, he was heartbroken & rightfully so. I don't think anyone could have handled his situation any better than he did.
Ouch! That slap of reality hurts..............
who is that bomb with duff? daaamn...
smooth operator lol his wife Susan
"...not this way..." were the last words Layne said to Mike Starr. So,I think that probably he didn't felt strong enough for a long, terrible battle...but, as you demonstrate, it could be won. I think depression was stronger than him,and in those conditions, only a decisive, hard support could had been saved him. Sorry for may bad english:)
What do you think? Do you think an organization like MAP might have saved Layne?
ArtisanNewsService Fuck no. Every song in the library said why he couldn't.
no he wanted drugs to help with his pain drugs kill you from inside out
Is it just me or did Jerry seem very cold when asked about MAPS saving Laynes life?
Well its a pretty dumb question
Just found out an old buddy of mine died from a heroin overdose...shit sucks man
I had no idea Jerry used drugs. Does anyone know what he was using?
Dewi Lew heroin
I'm sure he did all sorts but I think he's more of an alcoholic.
Cocaine - Jerry was a massive cokehead. And alcohol. And Sean I believe was more alcohol, maybe some coke. But they're all nice and clean now. Good for them
Blow and booze
Reporters sure ask some rude and stupid questions. What a wasted opportunity.
Sean is quoted as saying that Layne told him straight up he was NOT quitting drugs, and that was the way he was choosing to go out. _A**hole._ He deprived not only his band, family & friends of his talents, but the entire world. On a lighter note, Jerry needs to wear his hair like this again. 😁❤
Rude.
Don't think so , Mike Starr when through shitloads of these things.
would?*
No
Dirt was a hit?
As much as i love drugs, I know now to stay away. Last time i went to rehab was well over a year ago. Heroin was my best friend and I had to say good bye. Not worth it. Layne could of definitely gotten clean. Especially now a days with different drugs to help. Vivitrol would of been good for him. It makes you totally unable to get high. Also, I am glad william is gone. I didn't like his voice or anything about him.
I'm sorry but without Layne I no longer listen to current AIC. I know Jerry is amazing but it's just not the same without Layne.
I don't think so.
Of course it didn't work out, he made a big mistake.
no.
When a original artist no longer is in a well known name band, its no longer an original band. So I myself don’t have the same heart and sole from a band from the beginning. You can’t change when people leave or die from a band but like Metallica can go on for ages. So that’s my Opinion
No. Layne was a hopeless junkie who was doomed to an early grave. And he knew it. You have to WANT to stop, and Layne didn't.
Who the hell are you
@@paynecast9935 Not a junkie that threw his life away, that's who.

funny as shit country singer, trust him go watch it
Look up AIC23. You'll see that I'm right.
I know if one is saved by belief in the gospel of the grace of God 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV They are then delivered from the powers of darkness and have the opportunity to walk in newness of life after being grounded in the book of Romans and learn who they are in Christ. From there off to Paul's other epistles and get sound doctrine built up in the inner man. It is a spiritual dilemma one that Christ can deliver you from....only if you believe in what was done for you on the cross of Calvary.
Layne KNEW the Truth...in his head. He sang about it, he feared where he was headed, God tried to talk to him (see lyrics to Swing on This), I think God gave him ample opportunity to change his ways, and tried to reach him numerous times, but Layne's warped view of "religion" and God based on his own experiences (rather than the Word of God itself) and the lifestyle that surrounded him helped to cement his self-imposed downfall. His lyrics in Mad Season's "Lifeless Dead" speak of a demon coming to him and telling him he's (the demon) is going to win in the end. _Horrifying._ Layne was obviously tormented in ways we'll never know. But I believe he knew the Truth, he just didn't want to go there, didn't want what he assumed (wrongly) would be a religious ball & chain around his neck, rather than FREEDOM & LIFE in Christ! He was his own self fulfilled prophecy.... 😭💔😭 #PRAYFORJERRY
I hate these auto voices
Cantrell stole everything from Dollarhide. He's a fake.
spinningthirdeye I'm the man in hawk. Someone stole my shit!
@Josh Weaver bwahahahahahaha i think (if he's serious) @spinningthirdeye honestly thinks that old guy dollarhide was a different man? He doesn't really know that was Jerry Cantrell???????? How can anyone be that dumb? Unless dude was 12 when he posted that!
Would? Wtf, no. That died with Layne. I can't believe they even tried to put anybody in his place. Make new stuff, sure,, but damn.
Thank God Jerry cut the rest of the hair and shaved
I'm convinced that it works better for Jerry Cantrell that LAYNE isn't around. Just an opinion. Don't like Cantrell... Never will.
Oh sure, because the legion of haters and naysayers are so desirable. They were far more successful when layney was alive.
Lisa Sullivan Jerry knew years ago that Layne was beyond helping. Jerry wrote 'No Excuse' for Layne. But lord knows he tried to save him even though he was himself battling the same addiction
Lisa Sullivan Fans like you like to romanticize tragic people. Staley knew he never wanted to stop taking drugs even though the band and friends tried their best to help him. In 1998 Layne had showed up to rehearsal without his teeth and looking like an 80 yr old. He was dead for 2 weeks before police found his body. He'd shut out all of his friends, his former band mates and anyone who ever cared about him because he chose drugs. We was resigned to his fate. I have more respect for Jerry because he actually worked on getting clean and staying clean. Don't make druggies your heroes.
MrTechselect - agreed. Layne Staley was a unique and very compelling talent but life is about choices, let's understand and empathize with, but not romanticize destructive choices that just cause more pain. Same goes for Cobain. God bless and help us all!
You can just keep your opinion to yourself! Yes, I miss Layne. Layne and Jerry kicked ass when they harmonized! But, why do you people watch things that you do not like? It makes no sense. And then comment bad stuff. Honestly...
