When you hear this today, you appreciate how *SHIT* modern music is- instantly forgettable tripe. This is timeless, haunting, atmospheric- unforgettable.
Grow up. There is so much good music out there 😂
1981 is possibly the best year that ever existed since time began.
This is correct
I like 83
Many albums that I like came out in 1980 and 1981
That depends on every person's timeline mine is 1987 because of the Cure.
#BillHaley died in 1981.
56. And then I’m 15 again …. Haunting nostalgia. When music was real
Did you know music is still real?
Yes mi amigo 😂😂🎉🎉
Great song! 80s was a great decade for music
100%
The late 70s and the 80s were a fantastic time for music. I was 22 when this song was in the charts and I have to say the women of that era were untouchable in their style and beauty, Debbie Harry, Toyah, Siouxsie, Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper and of course Barbara Gogan of the Passions who gave us this haunting song.
Add Rose McDowall.
and also Kim Wilde...!
That's a great comment , summed that era up well, I was 11 in 1981 but I don't remember this , perhaps it was low down in the charts, I knew all the other artists you mentioned . In my 20s in the 90s I went through that whole decade listening to early to mid 80s , tells it's own story I guess
Chrissie Hynde, Kate Pierson/Cindy Wilson of the B-52's, Poly Styrene, The Slits, The Bangles, Grace Jones, Gina X and probably loads more I forgot about.I do like Lulu's cover of The Man who Sold the World.
@@adrianlast195 Oh yes :)
I’m in love with this haunting musical dream of a song that, in 2021, is still light years ahead of the corporate garbage that passes for music today.
They lived it.
Si vrai.
My sentiments exactly!
The corporate garbage has exploded exponentially. To make things worse that garbage is also out of ideas because I hear an awful of amount covers these days.
i left school in 78 and was bought up on 50 60 70's music but when this came out it made my scalp fizz my hair stand on end and shiver down my spine im 62 now..and it still happens..mega toon
Same age I know what you mean.
Still in love with this, it’s quite timeless
Utterly fantastic.
Me too.
Takes me back to that time I was a fresh face 15 year old

Me three
I adore this song. Surely a huge influence on the shoe-gaze movement and bands like the Cocteau Twins which came along later. The song’s magic lies in the fantastic use of the delay effect on the guitar, creating a gloriously hypnotic rhythm built on echoes. Unlike most songs, the drummer and bassist are not setting the tempo or rhythm - they are following the timing of the echo.
Pure nonsense.... The echo is only an echo of something that created it - that something, looks a lot like a classic hollowbody and, just like all bands, the player of that hollowbody will be taking his timing from what the drummer does. It's the drummer's responsibility to set and maintain tempo - he or she will know what the interval of the echo is, and will play to favor it: but the keeping time is all the drummer's responsibility. Ain't nobody playing to echoes.
The driving feel of the track comes from the very precise syncing of the drums and the echo. The echo pulse remains constant. The drummer has to stay locked tight with that: he can’t introduce a bit of swing or change tempo.
@@Clocktoys This is practically meaningless: the drummer, drums - he provides the rythmn.
The echoes only exist because the guitarist is creating them as a result of his playing - which he synchronises to the drummer, all parties having established the character of the echoes he's creating as part of creating the song.
In creating the song, something has to be in principal charge of establishing and regulating tempo - and in this case, that thing is a drummer, not, an echo. The echo is incidental and additive, it is not foundational and constructive - that is the responsibility of the drummer.
Of course he can change tempo if that's a requirement of the song: anyone can change anything, _the band_ are in control of the song, not an echo: if they don't change tempo it's because they don't want to - because that's not the song they wrote. They wrote a song that doesn't change tempo - because that's what they wanted, not because they need permission from an echo...
You're writing nonsense, here.
very accurate i think
Always thought this was the case personally, youve put it nicely into words. A lot of post punk stuff in the late 70s early 80s carried a lot of that shoegaze dna, even before the cocteau twins.
Hard to believe it's 40 years ago today that this single was released. One of the best guitar intros.
And one of the more recognizable ones...
40 years..Fuck i Was only 18 at that time..But Damn i remember Them..Great number who granddad here still loves🖤
81 - 2021 yep it sure was 40 years its bring me tears
And a pretty good crop of choons if you were a dandy New Romantic!!

Totally true...
Like a long forgotten fever dream...the song haunts me.
I was 15 back then, such a beautiful haunting song ! The voice, the guitar, the mood, beautiful !!
This song has not aged one bit, it still sounds as fresh as it did 40 years ago.
😊
As a child of German immigrants to my native country... I like this.
I first heard this when I was 9, instantly loved it, and still do 38 yrs later.

Cheers from a lover of decent music in Sweden! I'm lucky to say thay I was young in the lovely eighties! God bless!
Was playing this today their only hit on the their Charts.Melodies her smooth Vocals to be blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s atmosphere could harp on and explain vibes and feelings like no other time or place in history
Remember watching this at 10 years of age. 52 now and still mesmorised
Magnificent, memorable, unforgettable. Takes me back to 1981...
Après tant d'années, cette chanson est tellement envoûtante...
Comment peut-on réaliser une chanson aussi parfaite et puis plus rien ? Cette chanson me donne autant de frissons qu'il y a 42 ans
In a sea of post Punk, Ska, New Wave, Metal, Oi and New Romantics this wonderful song hit the charts.
I'd class this as New Wave. Didn't realise until I saw this vid, it wasn't a Synth Track.
You're drowning in labels. You have no imagination and can't think for yourself. However, there is one consolation prize for you to take back to your lonely existence: you have good taste in music.
Haunting ! Never tire of this tune even after all these years ... im in love
the 80s was a really creative period...
I'd say this ticks the post punk and new wave boxes in your list. It's non more '81 post punk imo
I want to be 14 again and listen to that song in my bedroom on my little radio
Me too, I was 14 also.
A song that should have received much more success. Unusual and haunting.
Brilliantly unresolved song. Never hits the finality point but keeps you expecting. Classic, bit like Bowie's Heroes
Are we still blasting it 2024,I 54 omg! Yes u know dear, walking stick,😂,still loving it! enjoy it,goes quick
1981 was a beautiful year for pop music. I was 16 and bought all the albums/cassettes. The Passions are one of my favourites. "It really moved me." And I don't have to be in love with a German film star for that to happen! "For the cameras and the girls, it's a glamorous world..."
True. Two of my favourite albums of all time are from 1981: Tin Drum by Japan, and Penthouse and Pavement by Heaven 17.
I'm 22 years young and I gotta say these new generations of music isn't the same like it was in 1900s!! Sometimes I rather be 22 in 1981 than 2021!!
1979-1982 the best years of my life for music ❤️
@@FuckSlowShit it was a great time mate. At least you can be 22 and watch this era on you tube, however being 53 and having the memories is pretty good also.
Did you know that I am a decent of Richard Williams the passions drummer, he’s my great uncle and it’s really Crazy too think about it
A timeless classic, forgot just how brilliant the music is, as well as the wonderfully atmospheric vocals.
I'm 16 again ❤ Fantastic song xx
Brilliant, haunting guitar. I remember watching this TOTP in 1981 when I was a kid.
Outstanding song - ethereal and slightly other-worldly allowing the listener to drift away on a bittersweet cloud of memories of being young at that time and sadness that it’s all in the past. Bang on target with the early eighties.
One word describes this: perfection.
Nearly 40 years ago. Bloody hell!
Just what I thought!!!
Gone in the blink of an eye ...
for want of a better phrase!!
Great voice, gorgeous looks 👌
this is one of the most beautiful perfect songs I've ever heard. I had never heard it before now. 1981.
Light years ahead of its time too!
Loved this song way back in my youth.
Iconic 80’s unique sound.
The female singer is so understated and even a bit shy and awkward - but just gorgeous!
Brings back memories, this had come out when I'd left school.
40 years on and I still can't get enough of this amazing song.
Just one of those songs that stops you in your tracks, very hypnotic and a beautiful song, one of a kind.
I ... L O V E D ...this single when it first came out ...
and still do....
Another fantastic track from the magnificent 80's.Quite the finest decade for popular music over the world and centred on Britain.
Hard to believe this is 41 years old yet it is excellent. So cool restrained and yet powerful
Woke up with this song in my head. Always listen to the song you wake up with..
I loved this song from being a teenager in the 80s ... years later on a three week road trip across Europe I was in a bar in Brussels ... a local put this on the juke box ... just ... wow ... only great songs can imprint on your life like that ✌️
Fantastic memory.. my wife's hair looked like hers back in the day..
@@traceybonds8794 Everyone's hair looked like hers in the 80s. We all had to have curly perms or we weren't cool!

Great song ... so simple but powerful
Released 42 years ago this week.
Hard to believe the early 80's was so long ago....
What a song brilliant music,timeless
My favourite song of all time.
I first heard this 40 years ago then heard it a week ago and still remembered it because it’s sooo cool😎
Undisputed CLASSIC!
It’s nice after 40 years to see the faces behind the song. Class for it’s time.
I've just listened to the Foo Fighters version of this song and I think it is good, but not as good as the original. It's 39 years old now and it still impresses me. There is not a single note that I would change, absolutely hypnotic.
go figure you and i got the itch to listen to this 40 year old song within a day of each other. Good taste in music.
Yes! ❤️🎈❤️, Best, dtf
Covers that aren't better than the original are pointless.
***
A few songs with covers better than the original.
Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Flying Lizards - Money (That's What I Want)
Bryan Ferry - Jealous Guy
Laura Branigan - Self Control
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence
I remember this wonderful piece of music when it came out in 81. I loved it then and love it now.
incredible song, i will never get tired of it
I Won't around the bush.......fucking brilliant
still sounds fresh today.
Whenever I hear this I'm right back there in the time, and it was a great time. Great tune too.

an absolute gem .
I had this on record in the 80's and I had a Frisco Disco ( I'm yet to find anyone who knows what a frisco Disco is) and would take my little plastic record player everywhere I went, up hills, in fields, sitting playing in parks, sitting outside chippies till 9 pm. Hearing this again reminded me of the good days, when life was easier and safer.
Always loved this track especially the guitar sound
It really moved me
still amazing to this day........
I heard this in a club once.
Everyone danced to it.
Cracking song it was a cracking song and still stands out today what an era for music that was !

Where has this hauntingly beautiful song been my whole life??? Stupid American radio in 1981...Im sure i woulda dug it then maybe even sought out the record at Cactus Records...now long gone..
Top tune 70s and 80s was brilliant music wise 17 when I saw this
She was a lovely girl
Love love love this song, ever since I first heard it when I’d have been ten or eleven in 1981, it never ever ages for me. The opening guitars and her voice are just perfection! ❤
40 years old - still gorgeous.
Born in ‘93 and the vibe and emotion can still be felt almost 40 years later. So thankful because I hate this corporate **** and the “music conglomerates” that seem to control everything now in the US.
perfect song, great mood...can stand up againt any of the greats from any decade... pity they couldnt follow it up.
Wow loved this song back in 81 still do now nearly 43yrs later, how on Earth can it be that long ago. Some really fantastic music 1970s n 80s, not sure what happened come say 1990 but something seemed to go seriously wrong . Anyways still listen to the fantastic music from the 70 n 80s, only now through nearly 60yr old ear holes with headphones, and it still sounds just as good .
Check out the rest of my playlists years you will love em ! .. I’m putting together on YT atm ( also if on Spotify find me same name & profile picture )

Just wanna say ' thank you ' my ears cannot get enough of The Passions
This track was produced by Nigel Gray who also worked on The Police' first three albums. You can hear the similarity between the guitar tone here and that of Andy Summers on Zenyatta Mondatta.
I remember dressing like that. What days!
Recently rediscovered this track. OMG! Takes me back to my college days - great days, great track! 🥰🥰
Bought their album in 81
never would have found this gem if I didn't play GRAND THEFT AUTO
I remember this in The Concorde Club Southampton 1981 brilliant !
Crackin' tune. Sounds as though it's about 15 years ahead of it's time.
Still sounds gorgeous in 2023

An ABSOLUTE CLASSIC…

It’s even hard to type that this is 42 years ago.
1981, snowy winter days, absolutely immersed in adolescent turmoil and this atmospheric song takes me right back there.
Clive's echoplex guitar work = sublime. Ah, to be young again. Where's the hot tub time machine?
Still sounds fabulous
A beautiful timeless song
A gem….❤
