I remember hearing this on my AM radio late at night in the early 1980s, can't have been long after it came out. Hearing it broadcast by some distant station, from what seemed an impossibly far-off and romantic country. The sound of the Echoplex reverb, combined with the signal fading in and out just made it all seem so other-worldly.
Richard Williams TOTP expected you to mime (or "lip sync," for the benefit of Americans)-but somehow I'm not surprised that you were expected to sing live, after all, considering that the producers of the Oxford Road Show were well known for "keeping it real."
I had forgotten about this track and pleased that I have come across it again so many years later. It really is a one-off song that will continue to be appreciated for a long, long time, similar to another one-off of a 'A Girl Like You' by Edwyn Collins. The lyrics are very simple but wonderfully poignant.
"I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love, I'm in love..." Happy days indeed!
Fantastic song performed on a fantastic live music show: Oxford Road Show (BBC Manchester). A genuine attempt to produce a program that meant something and listened to the views of young people. Died in 1985. Shame.
Fun fact....this etheral , otherwordly new vawe sounding guitarist that seems to be afloat in a mystical dream with his guitar.....was once a pubrocker with Joe Strummers first band The 101:ers. His name is Clive Timperly. And the etheral magic guitarsound is made with an old echoplex
TimelesSublime! It Really Moved Me when i heard it On The RADio on Release Day & i Bolted to The Record Store! And I’m in Love with Barbara, Then & Now! ❤️🎈❤️, dtf
enjoyed this - haven't seen this performance before and great to see a partial performance of another track (was it why me) recently managed to get a cd version of 30,000ft to replace my old vinyl (and hence tape)
Cam Adair , not as far as we know although it has been used in numerous TV programmes including Ashes to Ashes and The Line of Beauty. It was also used on Grand Theft Auto - Vice City Stories.
Someone should find the original tapes and throw up the entire performance of "Why Me" and whatever else they may have done that day. The Passions pretty much created Dream Pop. The Cocteau Twins perfected it and ran with it.
What an amazing performance. Great quality too. Just a shame "Why Me" gets cut off halfway through. But still, any footage of The Passions is always appreciated.

There are few chords in history that can take you right back to a certain point in time … these …. are those chords for me ✌️
I used to know The Passions guitarist Clive Timperley very well back in the early to mid-'80s; nice guy and a great guitarist...
LOVELY BLOKE.........I was at this gig
holy shit that's so cool
She’s a stunningly beautiful young woman and a very talented singer. Such a great band.
so rare that a band can sound even more amazing Live!
beautiful tone to that guitar, great vocal, the bass pulses easily beneath and the drums are perfectly placed underneath the whole affair. a classic.
yeah and it a solid state Carlsbro Stingray Combo - proof that Tube Amps aren't always better
I bought this single. Legendary.
such an otherworldly, atemporal sound, makes me float. *I'm surprised this hasn't been used in a movie, has such an atmosphere*
It is in the bbc series ashes to ashes ;) so wonderfull
What?
What?
Atemporal? I don’t think that’s a word
@@mickyday2008 Think he meant etherial
amazing what you can do with only 3 chords. beautifull
Fantastic song, from the best years of my life. Brilliantly played live.
When this song gets into my head, it's impossible to get it out. I absolutely love it.
So pre smiths too and you can hear it so much.
Funny you should say that. She kind of reminded me of a young Morrissey - the way she moved.
I was about 14 when this came out never forgot the beautiful haunting sound
Beautiful song, beautiful Barbara Gogan
Beautiful iconic song. Immediately takes me back when I hear it!
A moment of pure genius...... thanks for giving it to us... Respect.
I was there. (They used to give away tickets in the Manchester University SU). I went home for Christmas the next day...
I'd almost convinced myself that they were miming ..but then realised that they were just an amazing band who could play live really well
We turned up expecting to mime and were a bit surprised when we realised we were expected to play live! Sounds OK though.

VERY UNDERRATED...
Yip .. we do not make em like this anymore .. what a time to be .. young lol
Brilliant live performance

If you are only going to have the one hit then what a hit to have
It was not a hit, charted but only it a low position..... still a blinding sound... her voice was better in other videos.
@@davidbrennan660 Any song that charted becomes a hit. Whether major, middling or minor is another matter.
Amazing ...... Still to this day
This excellent song coupled with jump for joy bookend and amazing run of great tracks for them
Classic, pity there are not more videos of this great band. :(
Loviing the the jam sound.

They certainly play with verve and... passion. Good song.

Groovy
Manchester,s ORS ,No longer there its a car park now .
Much less processed vocals on this one - more live. A rare band that plays slower live.
Al Mullen Very perceptive.
Can someone please tell me if this song was ever used in a film soundtrack. Thanks.
Cam Adair , not as far as we know although it has been used in numerous TV programmes including Ashes to Ashes and The Line of Beauty. It was also used on Grand Theft Auto - Vice City Stories.
Fantastic - thank you for such a fast response - this song is a timeless classic and I have always loved it.
everyone here from the same era, guess I'll join
That was Aces....
Ex-cure bass player Michael Dempsey?
No,he joined the Associates from the Cure.I think it was a guy from Spandau ballet on bass.

I always thought that Robert Carlisle was the drummer.
Influence on The Sundays?
Well they were even before The Smiths and Cocteau Twins.
@@chrisdavie8163 - I would say they influenced Cocteaus Smudgers and Sundays. One hit wonder but what a hit!
Can anybody tell me what was the name of the 2nd song, which was abruptly cut? Which album is it from?
Why me? From Michael and Miranda album
@@richardwilliams4293 Thank you 😊👍

Marks out of 10. I’d give her 1
I'm sure she's gutted...
Awful hair-do but wonderful song!
Great song... terrible vocals by the lead singer.
Wut? It's a great vocals!
What an amazing performance. Great quality too. Just a shame "Why Me" gets cut off halfway through. But still, any footage of The Passions is always appreciated.
One hit wonders, Barbara cant sing, and other songs they had are really lame. German film star was a gem though.
