Four of Joan Mitchell's Abstract Masterpieces Sell for $45.2 Million at Auction | Sotheby's

With auctioneer Oliver Barker commanding a flurry of bids from the rostrum, a quartet of four Joan Mitchell paintings offered in succession during the Contemporary Evening Auction at Sotheby's New York totaled an impressive $45.2 million, far exceeding their combined estimate.
Representing the most significant selection of paintings from Mitchell to ever come to market-and hailing from the same esteemed private collection-these defining masterworks span nearly half a century of artistic production.
Together, the conversation between these paintings offers a visual timeline of the radical transformations of Joan Mitchell’s practice from c. 1955 through to 1989.
