There's another short video about her and her auctioneering career. You should check it out. She mentions her hair. Early in her auctioneers she was told not to touch or play with her hair so she has put it up ever since and made kind of a show of it. She really is awesome though isn't she to watch?
You are right, very professional. I am not sure I like too much showmanship, the other day one of the gentlemen made me slightly tired while watching him.
I grew up in the Midwest where the auctioneer style is the rapid fire patter they do, but I much prefer the style you find at higher class auctions like Sothebys, Christies and Bonhams.
She like a symphony conductor as she orchestrates the room. Just the right touch of hard business and engaging familiarity. Meanwhile it's pretty cool to see people tossing their millions around in competition.
I understand that it is a joke, but I think you could technically sit into that room, I did in Geneva years ago, but needless to say I was just a spectator.😂
add seller's fee, buyer's fee, commission n vat tax to get total sales 👍...it is how auctioneer earn their living...worth every penny too...dare i say.
@@dongiogarciasantiago2864 No one is saying that the auctioneer shouldn't be paid, it's just confusing for the title to say $1.8M when the winning bid was $1.45M.
I guarantee the auctioneer drives the price in some fashion. Her posture is astoundingly good and she sells a piece with a different style and feel. I like it

can someone please explain to me why and how that painting is worth $1mil+ ? like how is it valued at that to begin with, and what do the rich see in it? like is there an economic scientific reason it's worth $1mil or is the artist just lucky to have their painting grab the attention of bored rich people who spend time at auctions as a hobby?
@@Mattyjohns-mq2mo i think you missed my question by about a mile. laundering only works if they can sell the piece of shit painting back at the same price, which brings up my question again, how does it get to be worth $1mil+ ?
Most of the reason why they bid is because they are bored, extremely rich and want to brag to others when they display it in their homes. They can also avoid taxes by paying for expensive art and a way to protect wealth during inflation.
It’s a good question. I searched up the artist of the painting in the video, and there wasn’t as much as I’d thought there’d be for someone whose painting sold for $1.8mil. She graduated from art school, gained recognition in the art world for her style of work, picked up traction with exhibitions and some permanent pieces in museums, and now, her work is sold for $1.8mil. All that info is actually from the bio Sotheby’s wrote on their site. She doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page.
An object is "worth" exactly what someone is willing to pay for it. It's just paint on canvas. But enough people wanted it for whatever reason to compete against each other to acquire it. Why is anything worth what it costs? Nothing can be said to be "overpriced" if someone wants to, is willing to, and can afford to pay that price for it. Free your mind and the rest will follow. Also, it's not a "piece of shit" as you replied to someone else. It's a nice painting.
part of the team that's working it - knowing all your buyers and their reps, there's not a large group of them that can afford a piece of art like that; likely some of those folks are regulars, too

Totally came here expecting an auctioneer chant. You stuffed shirts suck the fun out of everything! I'm heading back to lower middle class youtube! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Truly a stunning work of art. Sotheby's is such a premier auction house and Phyllis Kao.....🫡 ... is one of the finest Auctioneers bringing passion and control to the room, demonstrating joy while in the box. BRAVO 👏🏽
Pardon my ignorance but who is Lucy Bull ? i've never heard about her..... Is she still alive ? Is she British ? Austalian ? American ? German ? Dutch ?
They are the reps talking to the buyers. The buyers could be anywhere in the world or just may not want to go to the auction so people won't know their bidding. Sometimes if someone important bids others will bid the item up even further.
Love Phyllis Kao. I can't afford anything she sells, but she does it so well that I love watching her. Plus, she dresses beautifully.
Don't sell yourself short. You afforded her your attention, and that in itself has its own value.
just watched a profile of her and i agree
🥰
The auctioneer is great. Very engaging while keeping everything in order. Also those severe bangs with that high pony? Yes kweeen!!!
Search for Phyllis Kao, there is an interview with her on here.

@gaiamorgosi7181 How did it feel watching people buy pictures for generational wealth like they're buying lollipops? Must be surreal!

I don't understand how this is worth so much money. I should've stuck with my art. Lol.
Why did she say $1,450,000 and the title says 1.8 million?
25% fees on top of sale price.
and also add vat tax to get full sale total 👍
@@paulgilliland2992 Thank you for this answer. It was polite and informative.
The auction house added what they make off the sale.
Shipping & Handling...UPS delivery fees going up....

Are members of the public allowed to go and watch auctions at Sotheby’s?
Yes. Because so many now bid on line, there are always seats available now.
well done Sotheby's

1.45M was the sell...not 1.8....come on...
From sotheby's we will help him ship
1.45 is not 1.8? I see now the fees. Still not a fan of the title. But youtube is nothing if not intentionally misleading.
Hammer price plus buyer's fee at a minimum. It's all part of the total, so it's not deceptive.

Lot of people with a lot of money around. The wealthy just keep getting wealthier, the rest just look on.

Yup,and this is their perfect way to launder money
Most of these people in auctions are actually not wealthy people but representatives of various museums.
I watch these just so I can see Phyllis

You can Google her. She's American from California.

They are the reps talking to the buyers. The buyers could be anywhere in the world or just may not want to go to the auction so people won't know their bidding. Sometimes if someone important bids others will bid the item up even further.
Why tho? Seriously. Can someone who understands abstract art plz explain to me the appeal of this particular piece?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or the person is buying for investment.
So that drawing I made in 1st grade can go for maybe $1.2 million it seems
What an interesting space
Idk how is this worth so much. I had to Google who is this artist. Rich people are crazy.
It's worth more, and they know it!

I love how the elite class do away with traditional auctioneering, likely because they find it to be of the "common man" and therefore not classy.
Why should they fly across the world in a virtual business world?
🥰🥰🥰
Wow !!
It was $1,450,000. Not $1.8M. Fix your headline.
Commission added on top of auction price to be paid by buyer
Why would someone pay $1.8MM for a bunch of paint smeared on a canvas.
