The plan is to get it to Portishead Marina at the end of September and then fix it up by July and then spend the next year or 2 just sailing wherever I can get to :)
i keep a tube of ct1 on the boat. good stuff. also found paint brush cleaner is good for removing duct tape residue. also watching the end of your video, the oil lamp looks very cosey, my boat came with a same looking lamp but i took it off as wanted to just keep modern tech inside, now i wish i kept it all together now

The mechanical and electrical book is fantastic, I'm in the UK and can confirm it was very pricey if bought here or U.K. eBay... I found exactly the same book advertised through amazon direct from the United States including shipping for £20 and it was delivered to my door within 5 days... it pays to shop around ... fantastic channel guys wish you all the very best for the future 👍
Thanks good tips, have use rubber seal through work we put them in hot water to soften them before installing. Have also used captain tolley's creeping crack cure before on a window leak held up for the season 👍

This page has some good info www.noonsite.com/report/wintering-in-the-mediterranean/ and there is one particularly cheap place (Roccella Ionica) where over wintering a 53 ft boat was just €1,100 - water & electricity included (Another example from Noonsite for this marina: 6 months with an 11 m yacht was €900) Fair winds guys!
I too have Nigels’ book. Excellent manual! I didn’t buy though. When I have my eye on something like that, since my adult children insist on buying me Birthday and Christmas gifts, I just ask for gift cards for Defender, Landfall, West Marine, etc. They are happy that I’m getting something I want and they don’t have to guess what I need!

The product information sheet for all the different colours of CT1 is here: www.ct1.com/wp-content/uploads/bsk-pdf-manager/2016/11/ct1_product_info_sheet_10-03-2015.pdf Which suggest that they are identical, but the safety datasheets (www.ct1.com/product-datasheets/#ct1-datasheets) are different... The black and the white are covered by one datasheet, so they are the same (apart from the colour of course! 😂) The clear and silver versions are covered by a separate datasheet, so they must be different in some way. We would love to share an anchorage with you and your family. The sailing world is a small one so we may well do this one day! Cheers, Chris 👍
As part of my regular maintenance schedule I washed all port and hatch seals with soapy water and applied a light coating of vegetable glycerine thinned with water. There are probably better products on the market nowadays but vegetable glycerine has served me well. The downside of using it is that it can be a food source for the nasty stuff. It must be applied very lightly and cleaned off and reapplied at least monthly. Sailing can take you almost anywhere, but you better not be in a hurry. 😁 "This Old Boat" and "Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual" By Don Casey are also great books to have aboard.
We haven't bought a boat yet (in the process of), but I have Nigel Calder's book on my shelves - everyone who's got one swears by it and says the price is worth getting it. I concur...

That CT1 looks great.( Hello to my northern neighbours; Wha' abo' ye) Is it an adhesive/sealant? So you would probably still use butyl tape when you want a pure sealant? I noticed you're appear to be using a paraffin lamp. Is it effective as a light source or is it more for mood lighting?
Hi there, you're right that CT1 is an adhesive sealant. CT1 has a tensile strength of 2.65 Mpa, for reference Sikaflex 291i has a tensile strength of 1.8 Mpa. Our solar arch fittings were bedded with butyl tape as they are bolted through the deck and we only needed a sealant. The oil lamp does give off some noticeable heat. It doesn't necessarily raise the temperature of the air in the boat by all that much, but the readiant heat it puts out is definitely noticeable. The light it gives out isn't particularly bright, but we do enjoy having it burning away in the background. Cheers, Chris

I just had a quick shufty at the Stixall datasheet and it is certified for internal use only www.everbuild.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/STIXALL-V1.1.pdf I'm all for saving money, but I'm careful at the same time. I'm glad I went for CT1 on our under the waterline through-hull fittings as that's the kind of job I only want to do once. Having said that, for some other less critical jobs Stixall might work perfectly.
Watching your videos is always a pleasure and instructive. May I ask you a beginner question? Is CT1 sealant suitable for sealing the glass of an hatch which leaks? Or is there a better product for that purpose? Thanks.
Hi there, thank you. :-) This is a specialist job and you do need to be careful with what you use. Some 'glass' materials can be damaged by chemicals within sealants, and if the sealant is too strong the differential thermal expansion & contraction of the aluminium frames and the 'glass' can generate forces strong enogh to enough to break the glass material. The choice of what to use also depends on whether the glass is held in place by sealant only, or if there are fasteners involved. Sikaflex has a special sealant called 295UV for this purpose, but whatever you use it does need to resist UV well. According to the manufacturers CT1 can be used for this: www.ct1.com/product-applications/what-should-i-do-if-my-boat-has-a-leak/ but if you are going to do this job then it is definitely worth taking the time to research it well before you start. I did it on our last boat and it is a messy job, so you only want to do it once! Cheers, Chris 👍

The join on the old foam inner seal shouldn't be on the bottom and a diagonal join would be more watertight but.
I agree with you Peter. I didn't replace the foam as the portlights are no longer leaking but if I ever do the join will be at the top. Chris

Hi Sara, the three of us have been out at anchor for a couple of nights (We are taking small steps forwards in order to avert any situation which might take us 10 steps backwards. Disasters at sea are good at creating views on UA-cam, but we prefer the slow and steady approach...) and we'll cover this in our videos soon.
