Hi Chris, good to see you back with a smile. A point that you have passed by now . Your keel is acst iron. Dont think it will like epoxy, but hay ho, Akso Noble make a meterial known to us old boys as Navel blue. You might know it as Rust Killer or Rust Cure. It changes iron oxide to Iron ferrate. So to make a good job of the keel, allow keel to go red with surface rust, or just slosh sea water at it & leave it a couple of days, paint over with Rust Killer. then paint with International " Intertuf 16". But if you've done it by now with epoxy. next time try a MUCH cheeper & less time consuming way. Have Fun

Oh hello! Hope you’re all well? Great to see you back!! Definitely no skipping, where’s the fun in that. Great tip on the cleaning but the best bit is your boat now smells of fish and chips!!
Phosphoric acid for the keel after cleaning to treat any remaining rust?
Rabbit has Mixy. Best to put it out of its misery.

Ah ha, welcome back, good episode too. I keep white vinegar aboard and use it for cleaning all kinds of stuff, but never used it for cleaning teak outside, that really did come up good, I have pressure washed, dried, sanded, oxalic acid to bleach a bit, and that always works, but the vinegar worked really fast, and I watched you in real time ha ha. On the note of the multitool, I always keep my blunt blades for scrapers, instead of putting pressure on the side use it end on, and each corner of blade. Works a treat as a chipping hammer and is kinder to the tools mechanism than using it side on (I've a Makita one and had to replace the mechanism).
Oh and if you want a very good teak oil (which I have used on other hardwoods to nourish and protect, and clean) Oli Natura yacht teak oil from the jungle river retailer, about £23 a tin, it's very thin, has UV protection to keep the teaks colour longer. It's very thin and penetrates the wood fibres before your eyes. Good stuff and cheap as a tin will last a long time.

Just for note, the song playing when you were cleaning the teak, is popular in the south seas especially NZ. It's about the weller brothers who used to bring relief supplies to whaling ships from their whaling station back in the day. Great bit of history

    Nice job!
Concerning the keel job - i used one of those round metal brushes that you can attach to the angle grinder. Took it all in seconds and then I could use the floppy sandy disc afterwords for a nice finish.
I know you a finished with it by now, but for another time 🤙😉

Welcome back! Indeed a long time no sea.
When I saw my boat at end of last year the cabin had a foot of water inside as water had some how been able to get into the bilges from the cockpit plus the sealing boot around the mast on the top of the cabin had perished. It was rank. Had to bail it all out. Nightmare even on a small 34ft long boat. Still an awful lot of water no electric pump available. Plus some one had stolen the large boat covers I had had made for it which did not help as the deck was and still is filthy. The area she's out of the water is the Essex coast which is mud so lots of damp and algae floating around.
Very nice clean up of your teak cockpit. White vinegar is good for cleaning, also bicarbonate of soda, baking powder or if you want to lighten the colour of very dark wood very dirty surfaces then use salicylic acid crystals hydrated to about 10% which I used to clean a very heavily dirty flbreglass deck and hull covered in lichen and mould and bird poop also good for cleaning stained white hulls just roller it on leave 10-15 minutes, re-apply and easily scrub off the dirt and stains. A high power jet wash also makes quick work of cleaning a hull with this.
Was going to suggest sand/shot blasting the keel. I have the keel on my boat to do as well. Similar size to yours. Did you fill the join where the hull meets the top of the keel? Sorry don't know the technical name for this part of the hull. Also is copper paint any good as one boat I had this kept it's iron keel rust free and clean for many seasons?
Wish I could get my boat's electrics sorted like yours and be self sufficient. Must be a great feeling, under sail generating your own power not reliant on the engine or mains power if in port/marina.
Don't leave it so long until your next video.

When I was in my teens and working on boats in the 80's, I learned the greatness of White Vinegar. I also learned of a wonderful product called Deks Olje #1 and #2. For teak decks only use number one. And let is set for a week. You reapply once a year and keeps you decks beautiful with no work. Just remember when you put your last coat on to whip off all pooled product. If you do not, your deck will be slick. If you do it right, it is sealed and not slippery. if your working on teak bright work then you can apply the number 2 so you have the shinny Do not worry about perfectly smooth the first year. When you go and do it the next year, then you will get the super smooth glossy surface. With only once a year hassle of varnishing. I did this for years and never was sorry. If you have to have that glossy surface NOW, wait a month before you try sanding it. It will only be gummy when you sand if you do not wait. Otherwise the Deks Olje will soak up TREMENDOUS abuse and will not peel back from scratches in the coating. If you want easy maintenance it is the dream.
