I love that emily used tape to get straight edges while daidus had rough edges with the colors spilling out, i feel like it really fits their personalities and styles, amazing paintings btw
My favorite part of this video was just Emily and Daidus's banter. I loved hearing about their little stories from living in japan, almost more than the paintings themselves. But this video was just so cozy and fun to watch, I can't wait for more videos like this :)
As an adult, AC all the time equals a light bill email I fear to open 😂. Also, AC's turn on and off while a fan does not. I also like that a fan is easier to maintain, lol. I use AC once I'm off of work (I mostly work from home but still wait until 5PM to turn the AC on) and until bedtime, and then use the fan. Also, for other fan sleepers, do yourself a huge favor and clean your fan every few months. I had thought my cheap, $17 Walmart fan that I've had for about eight years had finally begun to die because it didn't blow air very far. I'd cleaned it before, of course, but it'd been some time and I'd forgotten about doing so. I just did it about a month or two ago and that crisp air that covered the whole distance of my bed (so I could feel it no matter what side I was on) was just...perfection 😂. I also use another fan in my "office" for ambient noise when taking phone calls. Noise cancelling headphones removes it so the customer doesn't hear it, but the ambience helps with the otherwise possible echo in the room since I'm still furnishing the space.
When they started talking about, getting motivated or getting influenced by anime or any media they consumed reminded me of why I started animating and drawing 😭 Emily’s animatic of Its not like I like you was the reason why I started 🥲🩵🩵
Couple of tips for doing backgrounds: Work your way from the back towards the front. Also don’t forget horizon lines, they are super important for perspective! I think this would’ve been especially helpful in Emily’s first attempt as the lack of a horizon line made the path look more like a brown blob rather than a path fading into the the distance. Regardless, the final paintings turned out great! You guys should feel proud of your progress so far
the Not Just Bikes guy's channel makes many good points about walkability of America & stuff that needs to change, so i wonder what from Japan could be implemented over here for the better
Right???? At first I saw the green he chose and though "damn that's a very vibrant green for a landscape" and then *he kept going* He went to art school so he best have good color picking
My mother has all the Ghibli films on DVD, so when I was little my mom was the full time working parent, and my dad was a locksmith who also watched me and my younger siblings, so I only saw my mom at dinner. So when My mom had a day off on the weekend, we would watch Ghibli movies together. I think my first memory was watching Totoro.
daidus talking about blue giant reminds me of how many people say that blue period inspired them to either get back into art, or to pursue art as a career. I really recommend it to everyone!
It's so funny that Emily's parents were ok with Ashitaka severing a guy's arms with an arrow, but the bullet through the chest is where they draw the line hahaha
I've only seen the anime. Need to check if season 2 has come out yet as it actually might make me get Netflix again 😂. I can't draw to save my life (I used to instead enjoy writing as my "art"), but that anime makes me so jealous but happy for those who can.
Right! This is lowkey gonna sound selfish but I have 3 copies of all the manga 😅 but to be fair I have multiple pairs of the whole series of my favorite mangas 😅
Daidus is really showing his art school chops in these videos! His understanding of volume and color is really impressive. I think that Emily's first attempt wasn't ending up the way she wanted to was because of that first giant hill of brown going off in the distance, and it made it harder to see the horizon lines. I think its worth it to try that same reference again with just a line through the middle of the canvas to make sure everything is in line! Her second attempt is REALLY good, I think partially because you were able to oreint yourself around that line! :D
My Ghibli introduction was during COVID! I was getting really into anime, so I decided to look up some movies. I started on Hulu by watching Pokémon movies and whatnot. Then, when I learned that HBO had so many anime movies, I decided to check out one that seemed interesting. The one that caught my eye was Princess Mononoke (I was also really into wolves at the time). After watching it, I was like, "Wow, that was cool! I wonder what other anime movies HBO has?" That led to me watching a lot of the classic Ghibli movies.
My introduction to ghibli films was The Secret World of Arrietty, which I randomly watched on TV late at night as a teen, with no idea what it was at the time, well before I was into any anime, second was Tales of Earthsea, which I saw in the exact same way
7:24 my first ghibli experience was spirited away at my poppys house back in 2008. It was winter and kinda late at night so the atmosphere was perfect and i remember being both so scared but amazed. Still my main fav movie
I remember the first time I watched a ghibli movie. I was like 4 and in germany you have a kids channel called ‘Toggo‘ and after 8pm they would stream like anime and stuff and I remember watching Spirited Away for the first time and absolutely being mesmerized as me and like kids of my parents friends were sitting in front of this thick TV. That was the best time back then I swear!
I relate so hard to Daidus about getting influenced by anime/manga (especially those specific sports animes 😂) Also just love this episode in particular as a huge Ghibli fan (I've been wanting to try poster colors for ages - this episode really inspired me to finally try my hand at it!!) On another note, love y'all so much, honestly my fave channel rn (love all the casual chatting, the art, the vibes) 🥺🌸 look forward to every episode
My first ghibli movie was PONYO!!!!! I found it as a kid and was OBBSEESSSED it was one of my favorite and growing up I just loved the art style. When I was older I branded out and found more :) love the vid !!
Acc no frr 😆😆 I joined club volleyball, varsity cross country, track, pottery, and reading ALL because of anime. Low-key one of the best personal character definers, and it's legitimately soo cool to see how you grow from each new interest
I'm definitely gonna get back into trad art when i have the liberty to in the future... Thank u emily and daidus for these videos, it's really relaxing to just listen to you guys banter and make art
CAT RETURNS MENTIONED! It's my favorite Ghibli film, along with howls moving castle. the message behind it and the character growth is so beautiful - for both of them. My first Ghibli experience was my 90's VHS tapes having Kiki's delivery service commercials. I didn't watch it until 2015 and it was beautiful and woke up so many childhood memories. instantly watched everything else Ghibli and loved it
Emi’s piece looks like a location from breath of the wild! And Daidus’ piece looks super nice and watercolor-y, though that may be due to the camera… either way, great job guys it looks amazing!!
you can use watercolor techniques , one good thing about poster paint is that you can use it like acryllic , water colour and also oil paint to some extent with a few tweaks. one technique is what Daidus mentioned is like overlapping where the colors override. if the color is wet and thick enough, you can also mix it to make a smoother gradient, or also use it watery like guache or water color. From my experience, holding the brush closer to the hair( brush hair?) is helps with smoother control of the brush and wiping the excess water off with a paper towel after rinsing it ( in a cup maybe ) helps with color control as well :) You can always go a bit thicker but not lighter( paint amount).I hope this helps :))
The first time I painted landscapes I was imitating Bob Ross and was using Sakura poster paints on cartolina. This episode had been nostalgic especially now that I just do everything digitally. Now I kinda wana start painting again
My first Ghibli movie was howl’s moving castle, I was in my preteen years I believe but my sister had recommended it to me so I thought of giving it a try. I absolutely fell in love with the art and the story, I even named my cat after Calcifer lol
This is so neat seeing the paints used for the films! I got into it through my grandfather, he loved these moves and has a whole dvd collection I used to take from the shelf and watch them ever since I was little. I think the first memory was ponyo and howl, but personal favorite is A Cat's return! I still have those dvds too.
My first Ghibli experience was in Spanish class when I was 11 and we watched My neighbor Totoro but with Spanish subtitles over several class periods but we never got to fully finish it and I was so upset I ended watching the full movie when I was in high school and I remember some of the songs gave me literal chills.
I loved this video but was DYING watching them figure out this new medium. XD Next time I suggest having a paper towel to help dry the paper and brush so there is not so much water and it makes texture if you dab it in areas you want to lighten. I'm definitely going to try out this new paint!
Daidus, my first Ghibli film was Princess Mononoke as well! I loved that movie so much that my parents bought it for me because they were tired of renting it lol.
Wow these paints are truly "trust the process" type materials I wonder if I could paint something like this but with cheap materials I have laying around the house.
My absolute favorite Ghibli film is "From Up On Poppy Hill" because I love the themes of respecting the past but also moving forward. But *the goddamn incest mystery* is the absolute *bane* of my existence 8/10 I still recommend it
I love third wheeling in every Spilled Ink video lol like it's so silly to watch Emily and Daidus bickering nonstop in one video and in another, they start telling cute stories about things they've done together. It was so sweet when Daidus gave Emily tips on her second try while encouraging her to keep it up since her first go didn't go as expected T v T
I've been using a fan in general and during sleep since I was a kid and now I can't not have one going in the background lol My ears are so damn loud when it gets quiet it will literally drive me insane so relatable 😭👍
My first experience with a Ghibli movie was when I was on holiday in Germany. I was around 8 years old and didn't understand German at all, but they showed Spirited away on tv and I was just enchanted by it. First thing I did when I got home is look for the English/Dutch version 😅
I love how cozy this channel is! Just two goofballs practicing and playing with different mediums and art styles. I would love even longer cuts of these videos just so I can chill out for longer while I work.
Funny enough when I watch soothing videos I'm not actually often trying to fall asleep but sometimes watching a bunch of woodworking videos just tickles my brain in a way that makes me just conk out midway through.
I think my first Ghibli experience was watching Kiki's Delivery Service movie as a kid and I didn't even know that it was anime until I was old enough to understand what the difference between cartoons and anime was.
My introduction to ghibli was on a holyday where princess mononoke was playing in a language i did not understand. I was way to young at the time to watch that movie. later in life i recalled that movie in a dream and spent countless hours trying to find it without knowing its name. something about a big pig in a forrets was all i could recall. it was only a while late i stumpled apound to movie randomly and was so exited i finally found the the movie.
I am seriously getting so inspired from these videos that I’m considering painting along and making my family draw a certain thing together for a day every week it would be a nice family activity
The walking thing in the US is so true, I visited Japan when I was little and forever have been spoiled on public transit/trains and walking there. The Us has a huge blocking problem, everything is too separate. Theirs lots of factors why but the invent of the highway is the one I put as the biggest turns in this.
ehehehe, im so excited to see their comparison in the future, imagine of they're already this good how would it turn out later down the line?? Excited to see the improvement
aw man this brings major flashbacks to using watercolour for the first time, it so hard to get to grips with a new media at first. Keep going guys, you're both so talented, you both have a good concept of line and shape, you'll get there
These are absolutely gorgeous!!! To make this channel was such a good idea! It has become my favorite past time activity and we not only learn more about art,but also more about you guys!💗
You can walk in New Orleans, I recommend the French Quarter if you want to go get some good food and see some nice architecture, their trees are beautiful.❤😊
My first Ghibli experience was also Spirited Away. I saw it in the theater when I was extremely little and it was one of the first movie-going experiences I remember. However, the movie I love/remember the most is Howl's Moving Castle, which I also saw in theaters
I just watched my first ghibli film yesterday with my friend!! It was spirited away!! I'm absolutely enamored with the animation and background illustrations!! The story was beautiful! I'm so excited to watch more ghibli films! :D
On the sidewalk tangent lol. Everywhere I’ve been in Australia (minus it being called a footpath here) is very walkable unless you’re in the middle of nowhere lmao
Okay so my first time watching a ghibli film was going into blockbuster as a kid and finding like a good vamp movie and somehow idk why but kiki delivery service was just calling out to me (along with this 80's cartoon vampire movie ) and i just fell in love with it and everytime we would go to it blockbuster i would get kiki then i fell in love with howls moving castle when dvd came into blockbuster.
Thanks for another great video. My 1st Ghibli movie was Kiki's Delivery Service & my favorite is Spirited Away. And yes, everyone had a crush on Haku! :D
ngl, i just binged all the videos today! i’m loving all the content and it’s been really tempting me to try trad art again. it’s been a while since i sketched on paper hehe!! cant wait to see what you guys have in store 💙
My first Ghibli movie was the secret world of arietty actually. But i didn't watch the movie i read the manga for it first im the 4th grade. My mom used to let me go to the library by myself and drop me off there. I went to the comics and found the manga version of the secret world of arietty. I didn't know what manga was and had a hard time reading the book but i was so invested in the story i kept renting the book each time the period was over. It was my favorite book and i constantly read it. Finally i found out it was actually a movie later on and asked my mom to rent it for me and i immediately loved it so much. Its such a sweet memory to me that i still cherish
12:08 If you wanna try that drawing once more, Emily, I believe in you! Please, that scene is so pretty! Some advice, always always start with the brightest colors, leave space for the whites and then the light green of the leaves, I never used poster paints before so I wasn't sure about their transparency but yeah, start with the lights then you go for the darkest colors Look videos about "Negative watercolor" and you'll get the idea. I hope you can try again :D
My first intro to Ghibli films will always stick with me. When I was very little my dad was deployed in Dubai (we're from South Africa). He was there for two years and would always send us little gifts each month. One month he sent us a whole lot of pirated movies that he got copied onto CDs for us, and a lot of them were Ghibli films. My absolute favourite was Howls Moving Castle and because they were pirated, a large chunk of my childhood I assumed these were very obscure, not very well known movies. Of course when I was a bit older I realised that they're actually from a large and successful mainstream studio 💀
I am not a painter in any way but I had some experiences using this type of paint. It was to paint a mug. I painted Kermit the frog drinking tea onto my coffee mug and I have to say the experience was both stressful and fun at the same time cuz there was no instructions, no guidance, we didn't even know what type of brush fits and how much water we should leave on the brush haha. The results were disastrous but I'm still proud of it.
As soon as I was able to understand what was going on with a television. My parents watched Princess Monoke and Spirited Away with me. I don't remember what was my first movie I watched with my parents. If my memories serve me right. Spirited Away was my first. But I really don't remember. And during highschool I asked my friend if she has ever watched any Studio Ghibli movies and when she said no. I was immediately like "Girl! We are having a sleepover and we having a Studio Ghibli binge watching time!" And I got her hooked so much that she said that Howl Moving Castle and Spirited Away is her favorite. Well.....we technically didn't watch all Studio Ghibli movies. Me and my friend were bawling our eyes out when we watched Princess Kaguya. I cried like three or four times to that movie. It's a masterpiece!
20:15 I totally get this. One time I got really angry, and I decided to walk from my apartment to just wherever, and I ended up at the port by this giant river. It was just over 8 miles from my place to this river, and my phone was on low battery the entire time, so I didn't use it for music or anything. Then I walked back home, following the exact same 8 mile path I took, but I did it barefoot the entire way and when I got home I felt so peaceful.
7:19 my mom grew up watching them so when i was younger she showed me and like when i was 3 i was obsessed with kiki's delivery service and my neighbor totoro and watched them no joke everyday Now the movies are a foundation for quite a bit of my interests today
I am 100% with you, Daidus. I can *only* sleep with a fan. I always need a fan or white noise app when I travel. You are not alone! And absolutely gorgeous paintings!

Omgg can you guys do an episode with using art supplies/activities when you were young? Like painting easter eggs or coloring books
I always love emily's nails they so pretty every video
aw man this brings major flashbacks to using watercolour for the first time, it so hard to get to grips with a new media at first. Keep going guys, you're both so talented, you both have a good concept of line and shape, you'll get there
These are absolutely gorgeous!!! To make this channel was such a good idea! It has become my favorite past time activity and we not only learn more about art,but also more about you guys!💗
this channel is basically a podcast you cant convince me otherwise
You can walk in New Orleans, I recommend the French Quarter if you want to go get some good food and see some nice architecture, their trees are beautiful.❤😊
this might be my favorite episode as of now, it was so satisffying to see the result and very relaxing! Yall nailed it with those paintings
My first Ghibli experience was also Spirited Away. I saw it in the theater when I was extremely little and it was one of the first movie-going experiences I remember. However, the movie I love/remember the most is Howl's Moving Castle, which I also saw in theaters

Daidus: very good start, honey!
Emily: thank you *burp*
Idk why but that killed me 😂
this was impressivly calming - to work to O_o also the results were amazing
damn bro daidus went crazy on this one, this guy should make a youtube channel where he does art or something
Daidus I feel you. I can't sleep without a fan sound in my room.
From the brand WHAT?!
Brooo, i was just about to say the same thing. Lmao 😂
I have my fan on even when its winter, the noise just helps so much.
So I can definitely relate.
36:33 I WAS NOT EXPECTING THE INVINCIBLE JUMPSCARE WHAT
My first Ghibli movie was the secret world of arietty actually.
Some advice, always always start with the brightest colors, leave space for the whites and then the light green of the leaves, I never used poster paints before so I wasn't sure about their transparency but yeah, start with the lights then you go for the darkest colors
Look videos about "Negative watercolor" and you'll get the idea.
1:58 THE MAN BEHIND THE SLAUGHTER
2:02 William Afton
Dude for not using poster paints before I feel like both turned out great.
You're both so talented!
34:29 the sudden burping gets me every time i replay it... something so unhinged about how well that was edited fr
Paintings came out beautiful, i want to see more
As soon as I was able to understand what was going on with a television.
We are having a sleepover and we having a Studio Ghibli binge watching time!"
And I got her hooked so much that she said that Howl Moving Castle and Spirited Away is her favorite.
7:19 my mom grew up watching them so when i was younger she showed me and like when i was 3 i was obsessed with kiki's delivery service and my neighbor totoro and watched them no joke everyday
Now the movies are a foundation for quite a bit of my interests today
That spilled ink invincible crossover was elite
I am 100% with you, Daidus. I can *only* sleep with a fan. I always need a fan or white noise app when I travel. You are not alone!
And absolutely gorgeous paintings!
