Kuretake Gansai Tambi (which is the large pan set they have!) are what’s known as “gansai” paints, which tend to be shinier when dried, easier to lift off of the page (and thus harder to layer depending on technique), and are traditionally made with animal glues instead of gum arabic, though the Kuretake brand is I believe using a vegan substitute. Gansai paints were also originally intended to be used on a different type of paper as well, which is part of why they have some of those differing properties. Some have said they’re similar to gouache in certain applications, but I’m not entirely sure about that. In my experience, they’ve just had a certain texture to them that’s different from paints that lay totally flat. Almost thicker, or slightly jelly-like? The reason the pans are so large but the paint is so shallow is because the traditional brushes for that medium are much bigger. A half-pan used in other pan sets is about half the size, maybe less, and filled to the top. All of this to say, the Kuretake are great paints! I love them and use them like my other watercolors all the time. But some aspects about that might have impacted their experience, good or bad, and I just thought that might interest some people! A Japanese brand I think might have given a more similar experience to other watercolor brands would have been Holbein, or even Sakura Koi depending on budget. I don't use watercolors, im a digital artist. But I've watched enough kasey gold to know that watercolors are all about layering colors together to create different effects. It's slow because you can very easily spread the paint too far. You also can have fun controlling the amount of water to change the paint concentration and make gradients! Also always do lineart last 😭 different watercolors react with lineart. You'll get bleed no matter what. Also with watercolor you want to do large brush strokes as it'll spread the watercolor more, smaller brush strokes may cause streaks when dry. I haven't been in art classes in a long while but watching this is reminding me of things I learned 😂
General watercolor tips (as someone who's kind of okay at watercolor) Yeah, watercolor is about knowing when to wait and when to blend. Blending is easiest when the paint is wet. I saw with Daidus' piece that he just layered the darker blue of the ocean on top of the lighter blue because the lighter blue wasn't really wet anymore, so it looks kind of muddy in some parts. The drier the brush or the less water you put in the paint color, the more opaque the color will be. You can dry your brush with a paper towel a bit before dipping it in the color. If you want the color more transparent, add more water. If you want to use the mixing plate, mix colors a little at a time and test them out before you paint with them. Try to squeeze the water out of the brushes to make full use of the color you can mix with. I don't think it matters too much if you start painting the background or the main subject, just be careful that the colors don't start mixing together. Do NOT leave your watercolor brushes sitting in the water. It ruins/bends the form of the hairs, and the hairs will start sticking all over the place in the future. It also ruins the glue that connects the hairs to the handle, so be careful of that. Just lay the brushes you're not using to the side on a paper towel or something. Remember to change your water cups occasionally, or else the color of the rinsing water will affect your colors 😛 Everyone did good with setting a base color before getting into details. The details you guys put are very precise. Daidus' dynamic use of color is very cool, gives the painting more life. Very watery and flowy I like how Emily uses different shades of pink on different parts of the bear, gives the bear more of a 3D effect even if she is using only 1-2 colors. They look like a Care Bear 😂 How Illy drew the emotions and her overall precision with the details are so good. Her more muted color palette works well too. I think everyone did a great job. Everyone's pieces look really nice ❤
The brushes in the water made me soooo anxious, bc like it’s so ingrained in my mind that they instantly break bc the glue gets dissolved Also it happens so often to me that they come apart bc of that
Illy: "The metro system is so easy to understand." Jaiden: *Gets lost every 10 seconds in the same system* Also who thinks we should name the bear Jerry? :)

Thank you!!😊
I just wanna point out a few things about the materials in this video: Kuretake watercolors aren't like normal watercolors. They're more opaque and reactivate quicker. This makes them harder to layer with and makes them almost like a gouache/watercolor hybrid. For people used to normal watercolor this can be a bit frustrating to work with but they're good paints, just different. With watercolor, the type and quality of paper is VITAL to how well your artwork turns out and how easy it is to work with. Cold pressed is by far the easier option for most painting techniques as it is much more forgiving and allows for easier water control. If you like working with very small sections at a time and not too many big washes (like realistic botanicals), hot pressed might be more for you. In terms of brushes, it's really a matter of personal preference. I find the Escoda Perla series to be the best brushes that exist, beating most high end red sable hair brushes even though they're synthetic and very affordable. But it is really up to personal preference so I can't give much advice on this. If possible, go to a shop that allows you to try them out with clear water so you can feel what it feels like before buying. That all said, please don't leave your brushes standing in water. It's perfectly fine to let them dry out because watercolor will dissolve later anyway so just rinse them after you're done painting and it's fine. The bristles of watercolor brushes tend to be more delicate than those of acrylic or oil brushes so leaving them resting on their bristles in water is just bad for them. Also tip: use two cups of water, one dirty one for when you wanna rinse the paint out of your brush and one you keep clean for introducing water into the paints or onto the painting. That'll make things much easier to work with. The rest is just a matter of getting to know the medium. Learn about the wetness of the paper and the brush and how those interact. How the thickness of the paint and the wetness of the paper interact. Everything from wet on wet to wet on dry to dry brushing to intentionally creating cauliflowering for texture or using granulation. Watercolor is my absolute favorite medium ever because of how quick and versatile it is.
I take watercolour lessons but uh, I recommend always having tissue in your left hand so if you make a mistake you can immediately take it out with the tissue before the pigments go through the paper. You can try having a towel to put the brushes in to dry it out, there's a cool technique I really like where you dual-wield brushes, one dry one and one with your chosen colour. The method is called pulling colour so it keeps a short blur and gradient, you place the watercolour down then get the dry brush and lightly brush on the long edge and it pulls the colour. You should also buy some masking fluid! It's really cool to play around with, It is a latex and rubber base liquid, and you shake it to get the colour so you can see it on paper then when it dries out and you paint over it, it stays perfectly white- if you try this, you much buy the correct eraser, you can probably search it up but it's a rough textured eraser. Always work from lightest to darkest! If you ever make a mistake, you can lighten the colour by getting a wet brush and scrubbing on that part of the drawing and it will get lighter- there is a scrubber brush but it's not necessary. I hope you guys enjoy watercolour, the elegant touch of seeing the paper is so pretty to me. It's really colour seeing you guys use watercolours, Watercolour is my favourite medium :3

But seeing you guys starting from scratch on watercolors, copics, or other physical mediums in this new channel and genuinely having fun learning really encouraged me to keep on practicing and doing what I love. So thank you, Emily and Daidus! I hope you continue to learn a lot throughout your artistic journey, just like I have been doing with your videos on this channel!

Hi there! I've been so excited to see y'all paint in watercolor! A bit of a tip from an amateur, one way I found water color easier to deal with was painting with a brush that holds the water on a plastic container connected to said brush- I think they're called travel water color brushes or water color pens. I love using those for the bigger/ medium areas and I can control the water usage better. Then I clean up my painting with a normal smaller tip water color brush. Also, just like markers, the type of paper you use makes the big difference with your painting. I recently heard from a professional that sometimes you can use very cheap paints but make them look expensive if you splurge on good water color paper. I tried it out and honestly, he had a point ~ Anyway, so happy to see y'all painting in my favorite medium! 😊❤
I just recently got into doing watercolors❤ it’s really intimidating to try and blend colors but a lot of the pieces I’ve done end up looking amazing!! ❤ this video really helps me thank you😊

11:28 oh yeah that's pain, i try not to check in the early upload period for that reason LOL i do wonder if the upcoming industry negotiations are something Illy has been eyeing, bc the state of that is rooooough and the plug for some folks sounds like it's been pulled for a year! Remember to change your water cups occasionally, or else the color of the rinsing water will affect your colors 😛
Everyone did good with setting a base color before getting into details. The details you guys put are very precise.
Daidus' dynamic use of color is very cool, gives the painting more life. Very watery and flowy
I like how Emily uses different shades of pink on different parts of the bear, gives the bear more of a 3D effect even if she is using only 1-2 colors. They look like a Care Bear 😂
How Illy drew the emotions and her overall precision with the details are so good. Her more muted color palette works well too.
I think everyone did a great job. Everyone's pieces look really nice ❤
The brushes in the water made me soooo anxious, bc like it’s so ingrained in my mind that they instantly break bc the glue gets dissolved
Also it happens so often to me that they come apart bc of that
Me too! The wood will expand too! I know they're probably using like super cheap brushes but it hurts haha
Illy listening to Emily and Daidus: “mother and father are arguing”
I absolutely love that squid! It has a very organic, flowy feel to it. They're all really good but Daidus' squid takes it for me!
Illy: "The metro system is so easy to understand."
Jaiden: *Gets lost every 10 seconds in the same system*
Also who thinks we should name the bear Jerry? :)
Me!!!
I get jaiden alot, i will also get lost in japan's metro system 😂
When you open up Google Maps in Japan for Metro System, just follow the colours of the train line because each have one that you need to follow. Yes, been to Japan before this year and loved it!
I agree with illy tbh
for half of the video Daidus looks like he's using an invisible pencil 💀💀💀
As a person who is in the generation of the worst attention span, I'm honestly thankful that my parents have raised me so well. I can easily enjoy long videos like this and I always love them. So much creativity and skills. If there's one thing I wish I could do, it'd be keep you animators in the algorithm
thats so real. my friends are doom scrolling while im over here watching 2 hour videos about a silly block game or a documentary lol
@@wolfgamerpor12 I KNOW RIGHT!!! In all honesty, the creation of social Media ruined this kind of thing! Let me watch a good historical fact without subway surfers Being at the bottom of my damn screen 💀

I'm genuinely happy that these spilled ink episodes are getting longer, because I watch them while I draw for example right now I'm doing two Ghibli paintings for my girlfriend for our anniversary and spilled ink helps me get through drawing because I'm someone who gets burnt out quickly and gets demotivated instantly, so these episodes help a lot!!! Thank you!!😊
Illy : The trains here are so nice and easy
Jaiden : *visible confusion*
Then illy should teach Jaiden
One of my favorite reasons I love watching spilled ink is seeing Emily’s new set of nails every video!!
That's creepy
yeah, theres always a pretty new set, i always want to get something similar!
Daidus‘ squid needs to get more love ! It looks AMAZING!!! It’s so beautiful
INSANE TIMING FOR MY DINNER bout to watch this shit while I eat like a royal family watching the court entertainers

I feel like painting as a medium really suits Daidus. His process, flow, and the looseness of his style.
I just wanna point out a few things about the materials in this video:
Kuretake watercolors aren't like normal watercolors.
It's really colour seeing you guys use watercolours, Watercolour is my favourite medium :3
omfg thank you 😭😭😭
omg I got this as soon as I got out my water colors now I can pretend like I’m painting w friends
That’s so cute 😭💝
Daidus if you’re reading this. Stop being so hard on yourself. Your drawings are beautiful even when you wing it. You manage to make your artwork look beautiful. Have more confidence in yourself and believe that you are a great artist
Agree he keeps saying how messy his artwork is when it's a stylistic choice 😅. He should give himself more credit
I love the way Emily draws illymation 💕😭
her style enhances so much 😄
Yeah she looks so cute
YEAAAAH!!!! I've always loved water colors as they usually make for super pretty and mellow colors ^-^
True
@@lostlittlenoobvt lilo & stitch’s backgrounds have great use of them!
I love that every drawing is different, normally you cant really see it from daidus and emily but here you can see it very well. Daidus just drawing a really realistic squid, emily drawing a "Kawaii" stuffed bear with sparkly eyes and illy drawing a whole as cartoon. Love it!
The bears name "Sherry the strawBEARy"
So it is written, so shall it be
Someone needs to do Daidus's Nails so he isn't left out.
I used to hate watercolors but now I love it, it's so hard in the beginning but when you learn the techniques and get used to it it's so much fun!

ye very validating, and interesting discussion!
Blud your art is sooo eatable i love ittt😭😭💗
I looked at your content and WHOOPS I subscribed
Emirichu and Illy: *art looks so cute*
Meanwhile Daidus: *art actually looks like it came from a college art homework*
Regardless, everything looked so good especially Daidus'! It's very unique and I think watercolor can be his new added strength in art!
Her line work is SCARY clean, holy crap.
Honestly I’ve been loving the channel, I just can’t stop rewatching all of the videos
they're so good!
Something to calm me down finally 😂😂😂 anyway y’all are great, I really like your traditional styles a lot! Pls keep it up
dude, my heart sank the moment they talked about them, not understanding people who can draw with a pen dude my boyfriend draws with pen like sketch, and all i, scares me😭 38:00
Idk what it is but Daidus's art tickles a happy nerve in my brain. Definitely my favorite art!
The poor brushes drowning in water 😭💔 the water damage/dissolve the glue holding everything together and the hairs get misshapen because of the glass
But I liked how different everyone's turned out 💖✨
Just want to say that each time I watch your videos, I always feel inspired to draw and usually end up sketching or painting with copic markers at the same time. I am far from being a great artist despite drawing for maybe 10 years, and I always stuck to traditional mediums because that's what I enjoyed. I was so torn between the pressure of being forced to draw digitally cause everyone was doing it.
26:14 has me rolling 😭
Also I can understand their sentiment about ai. It’s like we trying to prove ourselves for a computer which we hadn’t fully understand ourselves.
15:43 as someone who has always been on the fence on where to take my art, like whether to keep it a hobby or do something professional with it or just casually post drawings, i would be fancinated with learning about the digital artist side of youtube as well as the digital animation/animatic side of youtube that i grew up with
I watched Emirichu last when the childhood crush 2 came out then i saw daidus and watched a few videos of him AND THEN got hooked on other stuff. Now I'm in college and was like what the f did happen all these years!? (IT WAS LIKE 4-5 YEARS!!!) But now i really enjoy this chill space of spilled ink and i had a big amount of content to invest in. Big thanks from Germany you two!

15:20, Not done with the video yet but, I just wanted to say to not be discouraged to share your thoughts on your career. I personally love watching behind the scenes documentarys for movies/tv because I see all the blood, sweat and tears put into making it that project a reality.
i love this channel soosos much!! thank you for updating so frequently. you both showed me that its okay to just try out, have fun and not be so critical on my results!!
UA-cam animators really be some of the most philosophical and insightful people
you should name the bear Berry (pun intended) to match the strawberry theme
And her nickname would be Strawbeary 😂

Lmao first thing I thought of
I've been using watercolors for years and they r my fav painting mediums. I like how u can experiment with the colors and layer them. They r very therapeutic. I usually have a cloth or paper towel to dry my brushes. And do swatches on paper before i paint
25:17 never seen Hamilton but i LOVE this bit 🤣
Daidus, Emily and Illy! MY FAV ARTISTS ARE COLLABING YASSS
UA-cam ideas: you guys could do a traditional animation like using a flipbook
Blossom would be a cute name for the bear Emily did, bc like strawberry blossoms and the flowers :)
I LOVE Daidus' squid painting, it's so cool and pretty.
EMIRiCHU, DAIDUS, AND ILLYSSA YOUR SO NOSTALGICORE!

A little off topic but since all we can see is your hands I gotta give appreciation for Ilyssa's nice red nails.
As a watercolour artist this is the episode I have been looking forward to the most! ❤
Also R.I.P to those brushes XD Traditional art definitely has a learning curve, so I really admire that you guys are not afraid of showing your mistakes and impoving with every video! GO SPILLED INK! 🎉
damn daidus killed it in this episode, his colour choices are so good
Yk I always get nostalgia from your videos on spilled ink, back when I use to live in Japan I would watch Japanese television and the editing of these videos just looks so alike I can’t help but feel happy
I love watercolors and especially painting birds with them so I'm excited to watch this 💕

I love how Daidus went completely watercolor vibes he didn't use any technique he knows best I thought he was going to use anything else to do delineate his drawing and I absolutely love how organic he decided to go on this one, is really beautiful and such a good use of this technique
I get the impression from the pink bear that his name is Emmett, he is male and puts on a cute smiley face for people because of his appearance but behind the scenes is actually emo.
I tried it out and honestly, he had a point ~
Anyway, so happy to see y'all painting in my favorite medium! 😊❤
I love everything Daidus comes up with
I just recently got into doing watercolors❤ it’s really intimidating to try and blend colors but a lot of the pieces I’ve done end up looking amazing!! ❤ this video really helps me thank you😊
Illy's sprite art is adorable
I have a cat named Juni too! And my other cat, currently named Sage, used to be named Lugi. I thought that was a funny coincidence. :)
Hooray! New Spilled Ink Episode!
Guys, it’s so valid and makes complete sense for you to get tired after years and years of doing the same thing!
And I’d love to hear your honest thoughts on doing youtube, if you wanna make a video about it, make it!
It could even help some people who think they wanna be a youtube artist but don’t fully understand everything that comes with that.
I am IN LOVE with the squid that Dadius did!
For watercolor, or any kind of medium get cheap water colors, and get good paper.
Omg YAY all my fav animators in one vid this year😢❤ I'm an art student and love art
Omg you should use acrylic markers and make custom wallets or things you use daily and want to spice up, I bought mine like 4 months ago and I use them every day they are SO useful
illy looks soooo cute in emily's style !!!
Everyone's art looks so good!! Emily and Illy's are so cute and Daidus's is so cool looking!!
11:28 oh yeah that's pain, i try not to check in the early upload period for that reason LOL
i do wonder if the upcoming industry negotiations are something Illy has been eyeing, bc the state of that is rooooough and the plug for some folks sounds like it's been pulled for a year! I think the future is somewhere between the freedom of indie/UA-cam & the structure/funding of mainstream industry stuff
daidus’s squid is literally AMAZING he needs to be less harshhhh 😭💗
Illy talking about how "old they are" hurts me....💔
Im 27 going on 28 in 2024 and havent achieved nearly enough yet.
Also shout out to having a corpsehusband hoodie, mine is so tattered from me living in mine through tough times
