Apparently, I slaughtered several of the dates. I apologize for that. Some are typos (Paper Mario was in 2001, not 2010). I got all my dates from VideoGameGeek, which I assume are correct, or very close to it. There's also different versions, console releases, etc. In any case - my bad!

I'm guilty of getting to a point in a game when I don't want it to end so I stop playing so it never does end. It's so stupid, but it's what I do. I really need to stop though, Borderlands 2 I'm looking at you.

    My list:
    1. XCOM (2012, especially with Long War mod)
    2. Dark Souls (Haven't played 2 yet)
    3. Mass Effect (series)
    4. The Elder Scrolls (3 through 5)
    5. Fallout (3 and NV, haven't played others yet)
    6. Star Wars KOTOR
    7. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
    8. Pokemon Blue
    9. EndWar (Could have been better, but it's unique and awesome)
    10. Red Dead Redemption
XCOM is on a whole other level though. Once the list gets past 5 I have a hard time deciding. I don't play games often, but XCOM always brings me back.

I enjoyed this top 10 immensely, it's now my second favorite top 10 after Top 10 anger inducing games. I loved the fact that there were so many golden classics on here. You guys should talk about video games more often, especially Sam and Tom.

  • @JoaLoft
    @JoaLoft 9 років тому +1

As someone who has been active in the video game industry for the past ten years, I have to say: this was a pretty solid top ten! Make sure you guys also check The Last of Us (on PS3/PS4) and BioShock (either the first one or BioShock: Infinite). Those two deserve to have been played by anyone, ever.
@ Tom: Might wanna change Sam's #4, he's talking about Medal of Honor: Allied Assault from 2002, the one which took place in WW2 (still the best Medal of Honor ever made, period). The one from 2008 was the modern one which took place in the Middle East, wasn't that great.
And special shoutout to Zee for mentioning Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic! What a fantastic RPG that game was. Sam, take note. That is one game you HAVE to play.

New Vegas came out in 2010 actually. Dark Alliance was 2001. Kingdoms of Amalur in 2012. Not sure where you were getting your release dates.
I also highly recommend you guys all try Dragon's Dogma if you really want the feeling of truly battling dragons and other fantasy monsters in a much more "realistic" way than Skyrim. Sad to see no mention of Okami in anyone's list as well.

I took a major trip to Typoville! Sorry about that.
I have played Dragon's Dogma (both the first release and the Dark Arisen re-release) and found the game solid, but a little annoying. Those sidekicks never shut up, the game can be punishing, the play felt a little directionless (to me)...

Was not expecting a top ten list like this on the dice tower. Tom's taste really follows mine when I was a kid, which makes sense because he and I are only a couple years apart. His pole position impression ringed R.C. Pro-AM for the original NES in my head. I still play that game today. Then, when Tom said Zelda: A Link to the Past, I was so relieved to hear that. I would be curious if he ever pushed himself to try to beat the game without the moon pearl. Very difficult to do, but it is possible! Of course you cannot leave out Super Metroid and very glad to hear that.
Although, I have to say, during what they meant to put on the screen was Final Fantasy III, not VI. FFVI was only released in Japan and Final Fantasy III was the exact same game but was the title that was released in North America. This was because the original Final Fantasy II & III (for Japan) were released on the NES, never actually released in the US on the NES. It was Final Fantasy II & III that were only released on the SNES for North America. Final Fantasy Anthology was later released in America in 1999 for the PS1 which was Final Fantasy V & VI. It caused confusion for a while, but it makes total sense when you think about why it happened the way it did. Given Tom's list, I was a little shocked to not see Chrono Trigger on his top ten, but I'm guessing he still likes it. It was a great RPG back in the day on the SNES. Good top ten though.

Tom i love this video as I was and still am a video gamer before boardgamer. Knowing how much you love Super Metroid you need need NEED to at least give Metroid Prime a try. It is one of the best games Nintendo has ever made. It stays incredibly true to the 2D scrolling even though it is in 3D. If you love metroid you owe yourself to try Metroid Prime!
And Sam, I know you like WWII and Medal of Honor and I know you have heard of Call of Duty but have you played the very first one? Was only on PC for a while but i believe you can now download it on the 360 as well. By far the best WWII FPS. My personal favorite shooter.

Definitely agree with Sam on number 1, I recently picked up Skyrim again for PC in a Steam Sale and after loading something like 60 mods onto the game it easily I fell in love with it all over again. It easily surpasses anything that next gen consoles have to offer and this is a game from 2011. Every bit of the world is so detailed you feel like you're living in it. Especially when you have immersion mods like Frostfall. My favourite game and I just hope Bethesda is working even harder on the next one because it'll take a lot of work.

As primarily a video gamer who enjoys your channel, may I take this opportunity to shoot you some suggestions? Did you say yes? This is good.
*Tom*: Ori and The Blind Forest is a super gorgeous and well done metroidvania you might enjoy. The Vasel ladies too, very possibly; has an immediately attractive Miyazaki vibe to it.
*Sam*: Company of Heroes? It's ww2 *and* RTS, well done, and quite innovative in many ways. Also gonna echo Zee's Kotor recommendation - crazy good, one of my top 10, and a must for anyone even remotely a SW fan.
*Zee*: Hand of Fate? It's kind of an RPG/roguelike/action-adventure/card thing with Arkham-y combat all put together in a very unique way. No batmans, sadly. Tends toward short encapsulated play sessions.

I suggest Company of Heroes for Sam for sure which is a WWII RTS on PC that starts each mission with a really good cut-scene that seamlessly goes into game play. Psychonauts for Zee just because it's hilarious and xbox era which seemed to be prevalent on his end and maybe dragon age: origins (PC version not console) for Tom because it's an excellent RPG and the battles really make you think (it's technically hack n slash but it turns into basically a tbs on PC just because of the difficulty, you can let your guys do stuff on their own for like 2 seconds without maybe them dying.)

  • @danielwhitehead5546
    @danielwhitehead5546 9 років тому +5

Zee, I guess you play PC games because you mentioned the original Crysis. I think there's a good chance you'll like the STALKER series. It's like Fallout 3, with a very post apocalyptic feel, but MUCH darker and considered by many to be the some of the most immersive games ever. The first game, Shadow of Chernobyl, was the most immersive but a little tough to get into; the latest, Call of Pripyat, was the most polished and beautiful. You should pick one of them up and give it a try.
The middle game is called Clear Sky and is largely considered the worst of the series so ignore it, especially if you'll probably only play one.

I used to think I was a total nerd growing up. I did not care about girls or sports because I was buried in video games and comics. After listening to this review I realized how awesome I was. Sam Heeley and I are so similar with board games and surprisingly video games. I loved Xcom and Tie Fighter. Terror from the deep was superior to the original. I played the crap out of dark forces and was also freaked out by that eyeball monster. Now I know I am at least as cool as my favorite dice tower reviewer (Sam).

good selection by Tom who seemed to try and spread the genres and systems - It did not cover a broad enough base tbh - oh anothe FPs, and another...
Anyways heres my top 10 - no real order and may not even reach 10 games!
Final Fantasy 3 (or 6) - although I played 7 first and have played most...6 just is more interesting despite it being on a more primitive system
Broken Sword - excellent point and click adventure - the music, the voice acting, the humour
No One Lives Forever - very well themed cutesy/camp Austin Powers-ish FPS
The Misadventures Of Tron Bonne - very cutesy mish mash of genres which somehow works
Zelda: A Link To The Past - good simple fun
Freedom Force - superhero rpg real time tactical fighter thing
Deus Ex - largely excelelnt fps, rpg thing
Tomb Raider - almost perfect blend of story, shooting, exploring and simple puzzles
Minecraft - THE definitive sandbox game
Captain Blood - fairly unique but fatally flawed game involving talking to aliens and teleportation
    ...honourary mentions
Spore - yes you can be God (almost) evolving a cell creature through stages to dominate the universe
Road Rash/Carmageddon - in general I detest racing games but these 2 with the added nastiness are good fun

Then i've got a game from my university friend and played it a bit and then got a strange nausea issue with it (same with HL2 and some other games). So, sadly, but hasn't finished it.
Kingdom of Amalur demo was fun and Steam is often tempting me with -75% for this, but seeing how huge its world was i'm afraid to start it :)

You guys have mentioned stuff that brings back so many memories!
Tom, you mentioned Final Fantasy 3/6... to this day Ff3 is one of my most favs. I am very surprised you didnt mention Crono Trigger. It was first released on snes by sqauresoft, and it was later adaptes to NDS and it might also be available for ipad. PLAY THIS GAME! Based on your list i feel you will love it. Its so similar to ff3 in every way, but the story... wow! You will grow to love the characters and you will become emotionally invested in the game. Play one of the newer ports because they cleaned up the script as opposed to the original snes version. You wont regret playing Crono Trigger :)

1- DooM (even better now with the Brutal DooM mod) - My first game ever (i was 3 yo) love till this day
2- Warcraft 2 - Hated WC3, liked more when was dark and had ships
3- Diablo 2 - Loved the theme, the character building (Diablo3 you can change any time), tons of itens
4 - Fallout 3 - Same as Zee said (and a plus that my gf loves to play it with me as well)
5 - Shadow of the Colosus - This game... Without words... And my gf also plays with me
6 - Need for Speed Underground 1/2 - Awsome game, so much memories when playing with friends
7 - Portal 2 - I wish I could forget everything about this game, so I would be able to have that hard time solving the rooms
    8 - Donkey Kong Country 3 - L, R, R, L, R , R, L, R, L, R... TUFST
9 - Ragnarok Online (pre-renewal) - Cool game, but got in the here because of this is the only online game that I played and made REALLY incredible friends (2 time, 2 different groups, awsome anyway)
10 - Dinasty Warriors 5: Extreme Legends - Sometime I just wanna kill a bunch of guys with a huge weapon...

Wow Day of Defeat brought back so much good memories. I just started getting into FPS which I started with CS but I sucked at CS and I didn't like getting killed and waiting for the game to restart then soon DoD came out and it was so much fun! I was a kar master. I also used to play a now defunct PC CCG called Star Chamber. Those where my best video gaming times! I would play both games switching between one and the other and the fun lasted for so many years. Maybe it was because I was a PC game virgin back then but whatever those where the most time I had fun gaming. I wonder if those fun times can be had again.

My top 10 as of today's standards, limited to one game per series:
    10. Planescape: Torment (has aged a lot but is still so great)
    9. Divinity: Original Sin (amazing new title despite a few flaws)
    8. Trine 2 (stunning in every aspect, improves a bit on its predecessor)
    7. Fallout 2 (also improves a bit on its predecessor, easily beats its successors)
    6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (if I have to choose just one Super Mario game)
    5. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (still the best strategy game IMO)
    4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (if I have to choose just one Zelda game)
    3. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (epic game, I prefer it over Morrowind and Oblivion)
    2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (such a great adventure!)
    1. Chrono Trigger (uncontested really. Timeless, flawless, perfect.)

I don't know how I missed this list, but thank you so much for making this - and I'm glad you didn't differentiate between PC games and console games.
Of course this list, like any, does suffer a bit from "Cult of the New" syndrome. Thankfully, it only had a little of that.

28:20 - Zee, I'm with you on _Paper Mario_ for the N64, but you really should finish it. The story is worth it. Additionally, the next one, _Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door_ (GameCube) is amazing, to the point where I think it blows the first one out of the water. After that, the series begins to decline, but the first and especially the second are very solid games well worth your time to play through.

Tom, 2 games for you to check out in all your free time:
Tactics Ogre, the inspiration for FFT, was remastered for the PSP, and I liked it more than FFT, which I didn't think would happen.
Also, if you like Civ4, there's a mod for it called Fall from Heaven 2 which turns in into a Fantasy game. 21 unique civs, 7 unique religions, all with extremely different effects, and a magic system and creative scenarios.

Sam, you really missed out on Warcraft 2... It was my first entry into warcraft, the first wasn't nearly as good, and the third is also good, but WC2 is where it's at! I have lots of fond memories playing that and Doom 2 in high school over direct modem connection.

Some great games listed by you all. I do have a couple of recommendations for you if you haven't played them: Fire Emblem (turn-based RPG where your companions can die with a great story), Wasteland 2 (spiritual successor to the Fallout series), and Mass Effect series (great 3rd person RPG in the same vein as Knights of the Old Republic that has a deep morality/choice system)

I'm the opposite, some may consider me an expert on video games, but board gaming is a second hobby. To me, this was really enjoyable, to see the joy you have for these favorite video games of yours, some of which were a little off-the-beaten-path. I found myself just shouting "YES!" as you each mentioned great games that I remember loving as well!
I know you've got a lot of work to do, but if you're interested, I made a series of videos going over my top 100 favorite video games and you can view any ten you'd like over at my channel. Tom would especially like it because we're both huge Super Nintendo fans ;)
P.S. Zee, when you mentioned Crimson Skies: HRtR, I exploded with glee. I'm glad somebody else remembers this fantastic game!
