Guys, the gaming hobby would be less than it is today without the Dice Tower - and that goes for the three of you guys as well as Ryan, Jason, Dan, the HAMTAG guys and everyone else. Thank you so much for the hard work you put in to promote gaming in such positive ways. You are such great examples of men and gamers and it is a tremendous blessing to watch the content you produce. Many blessings to you guys and your families.
Great stories! The memories will always last. My favorite one is of my 3 year old. I had just bought Dungeon Command - the orc one. I had opened the box and my daughter was sitting on the floor with me. She asked if she could play with the pieces and so I let her (she has been around my games since birth, so she is always super careful with my stuff surprisingly). She created this whole story in her head and with the pieces where the orcs were out exploring the map and looking for treasure. Every time they would find 'treasure', all the miniatures would hi-5. Then, after a day of treasure hunting, they all got together to take a nap, and she used the rulebook as their blanket. It was adorable and creative and I'll never forget it.
My favorite gaming moment off the top of my head: some friends and I were playing a full 6 - player game of Exodus (introduced to me via Dice Tower videos, so thanks guys!), and one of my friends (first time playing the game) just absolutely loved the idea of being Chancellor. Whether or not he was winning the game in the broad scheme of things was immaterial, he made it a point to become Chancellor, and would not let it go, abusing the privilege as much as the game allowed. So then, late in the game, everyone had pretty much given up hope to end Dave's reign of terror over the sector, and were playing for points in other ways. It was the last turn of the game, and the bidding for Chancellor came up one final time. Everyone once again bid nothing (trying to save every scrap of resources available), except for Dave, who bid 10 (as he had been doing basically every single round) AND coming out of nowhere, my friend Sean, who bid 11 and stole the Chancellor from Dave right at the last possible moment! It was one of the most glorious gaming triumphs I've witnessed. We were all cheering Sean as if he was the 1980 US hockey team taking down the Soviets. Everyone was laughing, and Dave broke down with a comically exaggerated "NOOOOooo!" It was beautiful. Even more beautiful? I don't even remember who won the game! But I remember that great moment shared between such good friends. If that doesn't showcase the true value of the hobby, I don't know what does.
The best of the Top Ten List featuring Tom, Zee and Sam. I watched the whole thing through and was laughing (Zee getting the horse in Agricola joke), cheering (when the teenager was shown a righteous loss) and heartwarming (The story of Clara was priceless). Cheers for the great videos and helping to promote this great hobby.
Regarding Jason, it puzzles me that there are people who play board games that don't comprehend friendly rivalry and the teasing and trash-talking that accompanies it.
The Dice Tower Yeah, I guess there are people who play with the same groups of people for a long time and never get past treating them like strangers. Personally, I like the idea of being friends with the people I game with, and that means getting to a point where you can relax, lower your guard, and stop being on best behavior.
John Corley They pick on each other all the time. Next time you watch one of these videos pay special attention to all the times they bust each other's chops. I think you'll be surprised how often it happens. I think we're so used to them that we don't notice as much when they do it to each other. Then when a new person is introduced we see the ribbing as targeted because we gloss over all the times they do it to each other.
Top moment, when in Shadows over Camelot my darling nine year old daughter looked at me with eyes of betrayal, "Are you the traitor daddy?". I wasn't. Because she was!
This video was a lot of fun to watch. Althought Tom's number 2 almost made me cry. My top 10 experiences include a number of situations with my family and watching my children play and demonstrate skills that I was previously not aware of. Or better yet demonstrating good sportsmanship and compassion. I would like to see this list done every year around Christmas or Thanksgiving to allow you all to share the joy that playing board games has brought to you.
I truly enjoyed this video. I found the stories and how they reacted to each other telling these stories fascinating and hilarious. I hope you guys do this again and make another list with other experiences and stories. This is probably my favorite video you guys produced so far on this channel.
You guys are just the best! :) The friendship you have really shows in your videos - it's extremely enjoyable to watch and listen to on top of the board games part. Excellent stuff.
This is my favorite Dice Tower video ever. Tom, Sam, and Zee are all excellent story tellers, and it's a joy to watch them together. I would love to see more like this. I can't believe anyone would give this a thumbs down (what kind of heartless monster would do that?).
What a great way to start the video, Sam's #10 (and the banter between you guys) had me howling and wiping tears (at work no less!). Keep it up guys. :)
I'm sure this had to be one of their favorite top 10 list to make. It made me recall some of my greatest gaming moments and it instantly put a smile on my face.
Sharing stories are always fun, and I really enjoyed this top ten. Everyone looked like they're having a good time telling them, making them even richer. This was terrific!
I really enjoyed Zee's story about his mom asking to play a game. My mom's the same way. If there's money, she'll wreck the house. We played Speculation and she doubled the second place player in score. Awesome episode, guys. Smiles the whole time watching. :)
Zee G. Zee !! I didn't watch the entire show on friday cause I Kept it for my "background sound" working session of monday and I discover this morning your number two... All my pleasure my friend... It was so fun to do you as the green monk ;)
This is one of my favorite top tens ever from you guys. I really just like hearing stories like this. If I were to make a personal Top Ten Favorite Top Tens, this one would rank pretty near the top. Nice job.
You guys are great, these videos make me laugh and have helped me find a few games that Im very happy with. Thanks for the great window into a hobby that I had all but forsaken in the last 20ish years with the exception of D&d, Risk and MTG in my early teen years. Im happy to be back into a hobby that I forgot all about, thank you guys and keep up the great work.
at first i thought "what? r u serious? u want to talk about your experiences? why should we care?" but it was really awesome (hey Jason :D) and as always i enjoyed a lot and laughed a lot. you really did take some place in my heart, all three of you :)
Thank you so much for making this video. I absolutely LOVE to hear the stories b/c it is the experience (not so much winning) that makes all the difference to me. Great idea y'all; Thank you for sharing!!!
This was awesome... You hopefully know how rare and outstanding IMHO it is having an environment which makes this grade of awesome possible! Thx for sharing and all the best to you and your families.
I was in the audience for the Gen Con episode and I enjoyed myself immensely. Many laughs were had and it was really an experience I won't forget any time soon. Also, my game group is doing our first 24 hour marathon this weekend and I can't wait to see which one of us is going to be "that guy" that wants to keep playing when the rest of us are ready to fall out of our chairs asleep.
You guys put out great videos, 3 good buddies giving each other guff and a good show of camaraderie. Your videos have got me into board gaming and it has gave my wife and me a solid hobby to bond over! Thank you guys.
Here are my top 3 experiences: 3) Getting my mom and brother to play The Resistance and have them distrust everyone for all 3 games. 2) Played Lords of Vegas with Up expansion and getting so caught up that we had the entire gaming store watching reminiscent of a craps table. When it came down to a tense dice roll, the spectators actually held their breath. 1) Playing Battlestar Galactica with my son, who threw me in the brig for the.entire game and convinced everyone I was a Cylon (I wasn't) AND THEY BELIEVED HIM.
I absolutely love how you just say it like it is Sam. I was one of those chiding you guys for picking on Jason. Although I think people who don't know your dynamic, might feed off of that but then again, haters are gonna hate. Glad you guys are so fond of Jason. I really like him and am always excited to get his take on things.
This was a top 10 I've been hoping for. Funny thing is, most of these stories are basically the same as ones I would have told. My first BSG game came down to the final dice roll being the decider, seeing my son really having the concepts in a game click for the first time. One of my favorites though was playing Descent first edition, and pulling a Spiked Codpiece card from Munchkin and adding it to my tableaux in attempt to increase my armor value. The look on the overlord player's face was amazing!
When I first saw the topic I thought "what a bunch of self-indulgent crap!" and then when I saw it was over an hour long, I almost didn't watch it. But how glad am I that I did! Honestly, that has to be my favourite top ten list ever! It helped to remind me that board gaming is so much more than board gaming - it is the events and things that happen as a result and the people that we meet through our gaming that makes a good experience great. This was truly a fantastic video guys. Kudos. You have inspired me to start my own top ten list of my favourite gaming events which I will put on Facebook in the near future, if any of you would care to come check it out. P.S. You were also right about the watching in instalments! I had to watch it in three parts! lol
At the UK Discworld Convention this year, we attempted the world's largest Werewolf game - about 10 villages of 15 people each, with a combination of lynching (highest votes) and exile (second highest votes - you move to another village but keep the same role). Was quite a lot of fun, but I didn't stick around for the whole thing :D
This one was pretty special, guys! One of my favorite gaming moments? Playing through the second edition of Cosmic Encounter (Eon) for the first time (probably 1982, I think) and getting so excited that I realized I would be buying all 9 expansions right away! And I still own the whole set today.
One of my fav DT videos! Top moment for me was playing Shadows Over Camelot 5 player, we were gonna win within 3 turns but the catapults were gonna get us. I had excalibur at that time and we were discussing(for about 5 mins) how I can use excalibur to kill off the evil card on my turn. On my turn, I drew the evil card, placed the catapult and said “ I don’t wanna use excalibur”. A moment of silence went thru the table and then after a solid 1 min, they all erupted and said “WHAT!!” and then I won cuz I was the bad guy :D
For Sams #3 (51:00) I was the guy sitting across the table from him playing Boomer. I was dealt the Cylon card at the beginning of the game and another guy was also dealt a Cylon card. The other guy came out that he was a Cylon just before the half-way point of the game and was threatening that if he got the second Cylon card he was going to make the Captain a Cylon. Half-way point of the game everyone gets an additional role card and I get locked up in the brig. The other guy changes his mind and decides to make me a Cylon instead. (He doesn't know that I am holding a 3rd Cylon card.) This was the first time I played the game. I did not realize there should have been only 2 Cylons in the game. I figured since he gave me the second Cylon card I should turn the Captain into a Cylon. This was the point in the game that the humans realized there were too many Cylons. If the first guyhad turned the Captain like he initially planned the game would have definitely taken a turn for the worse for the Humans. (As soon as I sat down at the table and Sam looked at me and said...Ohh you're a toaster. =) ) The personalities at that table made the game a TON of fun!!
My number one board gaming experience would the first time I played Sheriff of Nottingham. I'm not normally good at bluffing games, so I played it safe and didn't try to smuggle any contraband up until the very last turn. A few sheriffs tried to call me out, so I knew nobody would touch me in the last round and, thus, filled my bag with contraband, which allowed me to win. My best video gaming experience would have to be Super Smash Bros Melee. I graduated high school in 2004, so Smash and the GameCube were in their heyday at that point, and I picked up both of those items with my first paycheck from my first summer job at the age of 16. My brothers and I would play religiously every Friday night until the wee hours of the morning. We shared so many laughs and so much rivalry in that game.
Zee any chance we can see that Ghost Story char? or maybe a link to vid if you already have? And Tom I had asked you last q&a what was fav family moment that had to do with games but ya did not get a chance to answer your #2 pulled them heart strings man what a great memory.
Speaking of 24 hour gaming marathons.. have you guys considered doing one for charity? Get people to donate for it, game companies to donate for their games being included, etc..
This was a fantastic top 10, memorable gaming experiences are always fun to hear. I just experienced one last weekend. I got to play a really awesome prototype with a designer I have a lot of respect for who just so happened to be in Reno for Christmas.
Speaking of Stratego, one of my best memories is my parents buying me electronic Stratego in 82/83. I loved that game and although I dont really play it anymore, Stratego holds a special place in my heart,
I'll tell one of my stories. So Battlestar Galactica is my favorite board game and it was my gateway game into becoming a huge fan of board gaming. And I'd been playing it quite a bit for several months with a regular group of people, and this one night I managed to get this one guy and a bunch of his friends to play. He didn't play with me very often and a couple of his friends were non-gamers. So we're playing and having fun and whatever. It was great. I was playing with Pegasus and Daybreak. So there was this one girl who was not at all a gamer and we had to explain to her how to play a couple times. She didn't know anything about Battlestar Galactica. She only took Dee because she was a black girl and wanted to play the black girl. But she was the star of the show. I was a Cylon and managed to convince the group that she was a Cylon relatively early on and everyone was suspicious of her until someone caught on to me and my Cylon friend. So I had to leave the ship. So then it got down to the wire. It was the last possible jump before wining. My Cylon friend had played his super crisis that whenever someone was in the engine room when the ship jumped they would be executed. It was really tense. It all came down to a dice roll that she made and got executed right at the end. And the humans came out in victory. It was damn awesome. It was like a movie. The person that nobody trusted ended up dying to save humanity from the Cylons. One of my favorite gaming experiences, I'll never forget it.
So close to a Tabletop Dice Tower cross over, and yet so far! I'd like to see Will review his favorite game for Dice Tower too. That'd be neat. I guess I can dream....
Top experience: Playing Mansions of Madness (ok but not great in my opinion). I was the old woman and ended up beating a Shuggoth to death with a typewriter. We mildly role play and everyone could visualize the situation, which led to several minutes of laughter at the goofiness injected into a normally serious game.
Cool that one of Tom Vasel's top experiences is with Civilization, one of my fave games - sad that he kind of dissed it at the same time. I'd argue that Sid Meier's Civ hasn't been adequately replaced by anything yet. If I want civ building and real conflict and area control and tech progression, not many games can really replicate what I get from CIV. Also 6 hours you are just taking too long. I put a minute timer on choosing techs and if you're not ready by then, the person to your right gets to pick your tech for you. It speeds things up, believe me! This game is great and deserves some love.
If you're not taking the piss out of each other (Busting each others chops), you're not really good friends. Only the best kind of friendship can withstand it and indeed, be enhanced by it. At least that's what life has taught me.
One of my favorite gaming moments was a friend and I decided to play a game of cribbage. We started playing and we were both getting really high scoring hands. We had played several hands and I realized that my hand had two of exactly the same card. I said "Wait a minute! This is a pinochle deck!" We both about fell out of our chairs laughing.
Wish i had a group like you guys...my friends dont share the same passion as me so im a solo gamer...i buy games and its tough to get people to play lol. I live vicariously through you guys!!
ZEE....Your No1 is like mine. I met Colby Dauch (Plaid Hat Games) at Essen. And I was geeking out. Talking about his business and Heroscape... ...then there's a tap on my shoulder. I turn round and there is this chap there. I didn't know him, but he knew me. We were talking and I just wanted to say "Look, Colby Dauch!!! Here!!!"
Bang - When the sheriff realized he shot his deputy by mistake because the renegade had played very well. Settlers of Catan - learning that there was a game that was described as monopoly and risk combined. previously we had just played monoploy and risk. This was my introduction into serious gaming. 10 hours of Catan 8 pm to 6 am.
Andromedax01 I have a wonderful moment when I got gifted a children's game (mimi's kullerspaß) and got asked to be my nieces godfather. Would you play my first game with me? That was pretty great moment. I've got great moments with playing the resistance. When my girlfriend just looks and me and knows who I am... Or that moment in Andor when we could only lose if double 1's got rolled.. and it happened.. When my girlfriend whispered in my ear: look! it's bruno cathala, but we were too shy too say we love his games. Or when we met ryan metzler the same day, but I was too shy to shout at him and say he was wrong about jamaica. In hindsight, I really should have done it. To be honest.. Like Zee says. It's more about the people. My best gaming experiences are with my closest friends and family. (as are my worst gaming experiences ;)) Just game more! Great moments will happen.
Yeah, if i think about it, i probably haven't had a game where i didn't had to teach something or fix moves for others looong time ago. That's partly because we get new people to the games lately and i also like to bring something new to the table. And while playing i often think, that i would be glad just to teach and help with their first game, without having to also think about my strategy.
Guys, the gaming hobby would be less than it is today without the Dice Tower - and that goes for the three of you guys as well as Ryan, Jason, Dan, the HAMTAG guys and everyone else. Couldnt agree more!!! Dice Tower is great!!! ;)
Zee needs an Obscure Game segment, Jason needs a Boargame Strategy segment. Sam needs an Amerithrash segment.
Great stories! The memories will always last. My favorite one is of my 3 year old. I had just bought Dungeon Command - the orc one. This is a FANTASTIC top ten. Love the stories. Thanks for sharing guys. Also, great shirt Sam!
There's an easy answer to that - and it's that there are a lot of game groups that do NOT trash talk. Ever. I've found this out the hard way.
The Dice Tower Yeah, I guess there are people who play with the same groups of people for a long time and never get past treating them like strangers. Personally, I like the idea of being friends with the people I game with, and that means getting to a point where you can relax, lower your guard, and stop being on best behavior.
Steve Gale As much as I agree with that.. very well said btw, there are people who just don't like it too much.
We do comprehend it. We just don't like it. Some people love it and some people are highly annoyed by it.
John Corley They pick on each other all the time. Next time you watch one of these videos pay special attention to all the times they bust each other's chops. One of, if not your best Top Ten video.
One of your best top 10. Really likes the tales you told.
Thanks for sharing the # 2 story Tom, that was beautiful.
Probably my favorite list so far. Gaming is all about the experience. You guys are lucky to have so many opportunities to create great memories.
What a great way to start the video, Sam's #10 (and the banter between you guys) had me howling and wiping tears (at work no less!). Keep it up guys. :)
It always seems that Tom is watching a tennis match when the other guys are talking and it always makes me smile watching him do it.
Hand's down, one of the best top ten lists you guys have made. Thank you. Simply, Thank you.
I'm sure this had to be one of their favorite top 10 list to make. It made me recall some of my greatest gaming moments and it instantly put a smile on my face.
This is an amazing top ten! I would love to see more lists like this with storytelling from the three hosts. Bravo!
Sharing stories are always fun, and I really enjoyed this top ten. Everyone looked like they're having a good time telling them, making them even richer. This was terrific!
My favourite Top 10 list to date. Thanks guys from 1 of your many fans in South Africa.
I really enjoyed Zee's story about his mom asking to play a game. My mom's the same way. If there's money, she'll wreck the house. We played Speculation and she doubled the second place player in score. Awesome episode, guys. Smiles the whole time watching. :)
Zee, I love your number 5 :) Great time for me too, it was so fun !
And yeaaAaah... 1 for me, 0 for you. I hope it's the beginning of a long serie :)
Ha ha!
Zee G. Zee !! I didn't watch the entire show on friday cause I Kept it for my "background sound" working session of monday and I discover this morning your number two... All my pleasure my friend... It was so fun to do you as the green monk ;)

I love this intro music!!!! So much better than the "waa waa waaaaaa" dice fall.
I really enjoyed that video guys, thank you.
Merry Christmas!

Good to see another video uploaded. So much time well spent.
Your movies are improving a lot!! Great job Mr. Vasel
I loved the 24 hours of gaming. It was a very memorable event to watch: I can only imagine how it was playing.
Great stories guys! This is a fantastic channel and I appreciate all your hard work. Have a Merry Xmas.

Wow you insainiacs, one of your best Top 10s yet! What a riot! :)
Yes! I have been waiting for this list! SOOO good. Thanks. You are the best. :-)
These great experiences and moments is what makes this hobby so awesome.
This was a really good video! Reminded me of the fun gaming experiences I've had with my little group.
This video is SO HILARIOUS! Love you guys!
This was great! Cool idea anyway to make something different in the top 10s, and these stories are what I'm in gaming for. Thanks, guys.
I often watch your top tens. I really enjoyed this video.
Over an hour is fine by me, love the top ten videos guys

Love these top ten lists, I could care less what the topic is. You guys are super entertaining to watch/listen to. Thanks for all you do!

The personalities at that table made the game a TON of fun!!
Hi Tom. Second time you touched my soft side with that story about Clara. I hope you'll be able to find more games to connect with her!
I would love to see this redone!!
This top ten was fantastic! Thanks Tom, Zee and Sam!
Speaking of 24 hour gaming marathons.. have you guys considered doing one for charity? Get people to donate for it, game companies to donate for their games being included, etc..
Great list guys!! Thank you :)
This was a fantastic top 10, memorable gaming experiences are always fun to hear. I just experienced one last weekend. I got to play a really awesome prototype with a designer I have a lot of respect for who just so happened to be in Reno for Christmas.
We really, really need a gaming marathon really soon.
Speaking of Stratego, one of my best memories is my parents buying me electronic Stratego in 82/83. I loved that game and although I dont really play it anymore, Stratego holds a special place in my heart,
Best Top Ten yet!!!
One of my favorites of your shows. Great stories. Thanks guys.
Speaking of Wil Wheaton, would love to see Tom on Tabletop haha!
Tom, I am notorious in my game group for not remembering 1 crucial rule in new games all the time when teaching them. I feel for you.
So close to a Tabletop Dice Tower cross over, and yet so far! I'd like to see Will review his favorite game for Dice Tower too. That'd be neat. I guess I can dream....
I absolutely love the new intro though the strobe is a bit much at the end. Very cool.
Top experience: Playing Mansions of Madness (ok but not great in my opinion). I was the old woman and ended up beating a Shuggoth to death with a typewriter. We mildly role play and everyone could visualize the situation, which led to several minutes of laughter at the goofiness injected into a normally serious game.
love the new intro.
I guess I wasn't clear, we are talking about the old EAGLE version of Side Meier's Civ, not the new FFG one.
Love the intro! That's how you do it, Tom!
If you're not taking the piss out of each other (Busting each others chops), you're not really good friends. Only the best kind of friendship can withstand it and indeed, be enhanced by it. At least that's what life has taught me.
For your upcoming "18" hour gaming session, you guys should play Times Up again. It was awesome in the last session.
Hah, knew you had a thing for Warcraft from you avatar Sam! Had so many great LAN moments with my friends playing Warcraft 3.
Awesome intro. It's almost my birthday.
I just got Citadels for my birthsday, cool to hear you mention it at nr 1 :D
We need a dramatic re-enactment of Sam's romantic game vs. Jason at the steakhouse... LOL
Wish i had a group like you guys...my friends dont share the same passion as me so im a solo gamer...i buy games and its tough to get people to play lol. I live vicariously through you guys!!
What a fun intro animation!
Here!!!"
Love it!
Usually you add the list of the games you mentioned at the end of the part. But this time i couldn't see that:(((
Great list idea. Love it! I laughed so hard. :) :)
Oh God... I would LOVE to see that Piero Zee-Monk drawing... anyone knows where to find it?? :(
Bang - When the sheriff realized he shot his deputy by mistake because the renegade had played very well.
Settlers of Catan - learning that there was a game that was described as monopoly and risk combined. previously we had just played monoploy and risk. This was my introduction into serious gaming.
10 hours of Catan 8 pm to 6 am.
I really like this opening!!!!
Great list but what makes me sad is... I can't really think of such moments myself.
Not only playing eurogames I hope ;)?
Nah I like to mix things up, (light) euros, ameritrash... and a tiny smidge of party games.
(as are my worst gaming experiences ;))
Just game more! Great moments will happen.
I have a lot of such moments but mostly they come from RPG's.
Solid video...but can't wait for your top 10 of 2014
Yeah, if i think about it, i probably haven't had a game where i didn't had to teach something or fix moves for others looong time ago. That's partly because we get new people to the games lately and i also like to bring something new to the table. And while playing i often think, that i would be glad just to teach and help with their first game, without having to also think about my strategy.
Good intro guys!
+sam healy definitely some great moments in WC3. Good off the path reference Sam.
This was a great top ten
That intro is pretty epic..:p
Best in game experience: Mansions of Madness, beating a Shuggoth to death with a typewriter.
