You sir, are the FIRST person that has FINALLY understood the correct way to use pyrolysis on fatwood in a way that you can visually see when the process is complete! By using the tube the way that you did was far superior to anyone else's method. Congratulations sir. Very nice video ! And I never thought of using a downward evacuation to get the syngaz and the oils ! Very good idea ! Just few points: - Try using a more funnel-like shape at the bottom with a grill or just few rods to maintain the wood, instead of a tube to have less loss at the bottom - Try to be more homogeneous with the size of the wood chunks you want to pyrolyse, to avoid having to run the fire for too long for nothing, or too short and having an incomplete pyrolysis like on the big chunks we can see. - Try using a larger tube, to avoid clogging with my next advices - Try passing the tube through a fresh water current to condensate more oil - The gas escaping is syngaz, it's flammable, and you can actually run an explosion engine with this, given you adjust the intake mixture manually, and yes it work flawlessly without hurting the engine ! The USA actually produced trucks with a syngaz extractor at the back to run on wood during the second world war. - The oil/tar that is flowing is actually called creosote, it's a mixture of a lot of hydrocarbons extracted from wood, it's biocide, meaning it kill plants, bacteria, fungus, small insects, etc. basically it's poisonous, even without eating it, just through the skin, and it's highly carcinogenic, so beware, try to avoid inhaling fumes and touching it bare hands. - The rosin, the clearer product may be colophon, also biocide, and It is an irritant and allergenic for the skin and respiratory tract, in pure form or by its degradation products. So beware, stay safe, you're amazing !
Oh, and btw, in case you didn't know, which I highly doubt, the charcoal open up the way to forge steel without a gas forge, because it burn hotter than wood, so you can make a fire-pit to the size of the piece you want to work and do your work with this !
I watch your videos over and over again. Can't wait to see what you have decided for the cabins back door. The tool making is amazing. Thank you so much!
The video without voiceover is perfectly fine. Your choice of shots/scenes and editing make it perfectly clear what you're doing. The natural sounds are nice. Another possible use is to mix the pine tar oil in soap to help with psoriasis and dandruff of the scalp. Don't need large quantities of pine tar oil in the soap either.
@@Advoko : There are commercial anti dandruff and psoriasis shampoos in the USA that contain pine tar. One is Neutrogena T/Gel that is commonly sold. Others are listed on online sources. It works fairly well. There are other types of soaps and shampoos that have different ingredients. Best to switch soaps on occasion to get the best results. I've found the best results are when the medicated soaps and shampoos remain on the skin for longer than five minutes.
Really interesting video and really liked the way you used the oil for the table! I think occasional videos with just the sounds of nature are very relaxing and certainly help me to feel more in the forest setting. You could always do some notes in the video description. Thanks for sharing!

Neat! Using fat ligther wood to heat out turpentine and then pine tar. You can do nearly the same thing by collecting a whole lot of pine sap to heat in distillation, only you don't get charcoal at the end as well.. In some of the old pine forests in my state you can find the old collection pots on the ground, it's a really neat process to see on the small scale like this.
Well Done you had shown to us the right way to use wood you get every thing you can get from it You do a very good job Stay healthy and save Greetings from Germany Yours Frank
I believe its some kind of dead pine. The wood is also referred to as "fat wood". Essentially, after the tree dies, all of its sap/resin drains down into the lower trunk and branches, making it easier to collect. Great to start fires with.
i think it would be nice to include a text captions of what you are doing and what materials you are using. i don't mean detailed captions i mean something like "linseed oil to protect stool surface or "Pine-tree root used for extracting pine sap". that sort of thing. just to let novice folks know what's exactly happening and what resources are being utilized. otherwise great vid as usual!
Love the nature sounds, but having your explanations are sooo nice to someone who has never done this before and is interested in your thoughts and opinions as you work :)

Or, the viewers can use an ad blocker, which you can get for free from the app store as an extension. It really makes watching videos so much easier.
Add blocker means this guy won't get paid.
@@crashbandit7270 Sadly, that's true, Ironically, too many of the most informative videos are already being demonetized by UA-cam as they strangle politically incorrect speech, which includes anything that would teach people independence. I would suggest authors using the medium for income should look for other venues that won't try to silence or bankrupt them.

Silent videos (only natural sounds) are just as fascinating as your voice over videos, maybe even more relaxing to watch.
Edward, thank you for the feedback
A good proven formula is no talking, but add subtitles, so people can turn them on or off.

If voice over bothers you, just turn off the sound. Narration at beginning & end helps understanding.

If you take some of that charcoal that you produce and you grind it up and makes it with the soil it will turn the soil into an extremely fertile soil called bio char.. Mix it with your compost and see the results. Great video
It's good for forging metal too.
ive said it before, though i'll say it again. You Sir are bloody brilliant!

Cheers for sharing.
I signed to your channel to watch the log cabin go up. But the other content turned out to be excellent. Thank you for sharing all this knowledge.
I don't mind a few words if it illuminates the work more precisely. Beautiful work Max!
So you can make oil, gasoline, diesel, tar, and charcoal all with some sticks and a metal bucket? Why didn't they teach us this in school!? Love it!
Use wood from resinous trees mate. It produces a good quantity of fuel.
Good question. Answer: nobody could sell anything if all kids could do anything on theyre own... this is the system.

Great video. It's very relaxing. So, is this pine oil that you've made?
One suggestion, is add some simple annotation in CC. Nothing elaborate. Just basic notes on the process (similar to what Primitive Technology is doing).
Agreed! I watched Primitive Technology's vids for a long time before I saw he captioned them all- it adds a wonderful new dimension.
@Djasko M so what
@Djasko M so because he "might" be paid well for other things means we shouldn't support him on patreon? Dude, he's doing cool stuff and taking the time to share. @Djasko M We dont watch this because he is a lawyer, we watch because we enjoy the content. Support what you enjoy, its simple.
Very nice video ! And I never thought of using a downward evacuation to get the syngaz and the oils ! Very good idea ! Just few points:
- Try using a more funnel-like shape at the bottom with a grill or just few rods to maintain the wood, instead of a tube to have less loss at the bottom
- Try to be more homogeneous with the size of the wood chunks you want to pyrolyse, to avoid having to run the fire for too long for nothing, or too short and having an incomplete pyrolysis like on the big chunks we can see.
- Try using a larger tube, to avoid clogging with my next advices
- Try passing the tube through a fresh water current to condensate more oil
- The gas escaping is syngaz, it's flammable, and you can actually run an explosion engine with this, given you adjust the intake mixture manually, and yes it work flawlessly without hurting the engine !
Thank you for so much good info!

The video without voiceover is perfectly fine. Your choice of shots/scenes and editing make it perfectly clear what you're doing. The natural sounds are nice. The grain in the roots is quite beautiful-if you have any left would it be suitable for a carving project-a practical item or a decorative element for the cabin?

I liked watching it a lot. You always have some very interesting ideas in your videos. I just wish there could have been a few captions for some simple explanations here and there. Like, what kind of tree can this be done with? What are some things you can use the oil for? That sort of thing.

Waterproofing layer is called pitch it does not make a very good glue for that he would use the scales from the fish that he was cooking then when added with pitch makes a somewhat water-resistant glue

Think both types of video are great (voice over or not), really enjoy just nature's sounds and the music of hand tools and skilled labour.....truely relates the honesty of your endeavours. A little more detail on the process would be appreciated (some volumes, time taken, species of tree, etc...final thoughts, future tweeking/improvements)....but absolutely fine just the way you published it. Won't lie was half expecting you to reach around and paint the oil on with a skinned squirrel or badger (maybe that's just my brutally dark sense of humour). Keep up the great work, thanks for sharing.

Another possible use is to mix the pine tar oil in soap to help with psoriasis and dandruff of the scalp. Don't need large quantities of pine tar oil in the soap either.
Thanks for the info! Never heard of that tar’s property
Great info! Thank you again!

Neat! Using fat ligther wood to heat out turpentine and then pine tar. You can do nearly the same thing by collecting a whole lot of pine sap to heat in distillation, only you don't get charcoal at the end as well..
In some of the old pine forests in my state you can find the old collection pots on the ground, it's a really neat process to see on the small scale like this.
can that oil be used as fuel for an oil lamp?

I perfer at least some explanations. i.e. type of root used. If no voiceover, and a caption would be helpful. Very cool project, tho!
Mike, thanks for the feedback!
I believe its some kind of dead pine. The wood is also referred to as "fat wood". Essentially, after the tree dies, all of its sap/resin drains down into the lower trunk and branches, making it easier to collect. Great to start fires with.
Any resin filled wood
Even applewood, and cherry wood can get you sealing resin or bushcraft glue but I think pine is also flammable so you can use it more ways
@@nickboronda7696 Yeah, any wood with a lot of lignin (ie hardwoods) can make lots of nice, toxic, goop.
