I would put a lock on those nesting box lids to keep out unwanted critters. Also, maybe chain-link fence on the bottom of the run to keep things from digging their way in. You guys are off to a great start.

Did you remember to put wire under the grass where they’re going to be running around so that coyotes bobcats whatever doesn’t dig under the chicken coop to get in?

The most affordable way to get chickens is from a hatchery like "Murry McMurry". A box full of 3 day old chicks shows up in the mail. Chickens only lay for about two years so starting from chicks gives you the most eggs over their lifetime.

Chicken’s like to roost up high I think it makes them feel safe good. We also raised meat birds. Six or seven weeks and you have some good food. This is going to be interesting watching you folks. Feed the girls some oyster shells it makes for stronger egg shells. Thanks Guys

Highly suggest the automatic door for the coop. I got one off of Amazon. Works wonderful. Definitely want to bury some hardware cloth or put predator stakes in the ground around the run. Eventually, since in Florida, you’ll have plenty of rain. I would construct a rain collection system to supply the watering system so you don’t have to refill it every couple of days.

Your awkwardness is super cute. For the chickens, you'll probably want to put a barrier such as hardware cloth around the perimeter of the coop & run to keep digging critters out.
Edited to add: I would just use straw as the bedding, some people & animals can have a reaction to pine shavings.

I love your chicken coop w/run. We use hemp in our small coop and straw in our run. Hemp absorbs moisture very well and has very little dust. It also breaks down easier than pine shavings. Don't skip the hardware cloth around the base with all those predator on your property.

Hemp mulch is good to spread over the floor and then over the poo every other day or so. The hemp absorbs the smells better etc. once it gets about 4 “ deep transfer it to your compost pile.

Nice coop and run. Make sure there is wire underground so rats and such can't dig under and into the run. We have 1/2 inch hardware cloth on all our sides and windows. We use sand in our coop and have poop shelves under the perches. We just rake the poop and scoop it with a kitty liter scoop and use it for the gardens and compost. We have an extended scoop to pick up poop on the floor. All food and water stays in the run, not the coop to keep added moisture out. We use 17% Kalmbach layer feed and get it from Chewy and they deliver it. We also raise our own meal worms.

We hang our water by a wire 6 to 8 inches off the ground. Chickens love grass so don’t put anything out side in the run. Calcium is a must to keep the egg shell harder. Solar power the coop for light at night, it helps keep predators away. Wire on the perimeter like chicken wire place it one foot around the coop to prevent predators from digging under the coop. They love left overs from the dining room table.

10:51 You can use painting trays from Home Depot on the nesting boxes so the slope of the tray will send the eggs back to where the paint usually goes. You just need to slant the tray. If you get the reusable ones you can spray they down with water when it comes time to cleaning them 👌🏻

You might want what they call an apron that goes around the exterior of the coop so nothing will dig under and kill the chickens. Awesome start to the farm! we named out chickens hennifer Lopez, Lindsey lohen. Roosters help protect the hens too. Make sure the ventilation up top has small holes so snaked can't get in.

I would elevate the waterer a little to keep it out of the wood chips. You will have to big an awfully big outdoor run to keep them on pasture but at least they can get sunlight. I like the wood chips. Mites and other insects often come in straw bedding. I believe that non GMO feed is best if you can find it or organic.

You need to lock down those doors for the laying bins or the raccoons will lift them up at night and steal your eggs. They are very smart and creative for getting into hen houses. Possums will borrow under the wall edge and steal your eggs. Crows, ravens and hawks will also try to break in to get the eggs. Not sure if alligators will know the smell of chickens, but if they catch a whiff, you may come one day and find an alligator near your pen. You may want to talk to any neighbors who have chicken coops and ask some questions. Well cared for chickens will produce a lot more eggs than those ignored and not cared for. They're not a leave them alone and forget them type of stock - they easily case sickness and disease so you have to have certain medications on site to care for them. Best of luck. Can't wait for more videos. I grew up on a farm in Missouri in the mid-70s and had every farm animal to include buffalo on the ranch - grew a bunch of different food and vegetables. Life on a ranch/farm is a lot of work but I loved it. Joined the Marine Corps later, retired and now I just build Star Wars Droids for fun.

Stunning coop! I would put that coop on a concrete slab or atleast put hardware cloth under the run & all the sides if there isn’t hardware cloth. All your predators and critters will dig under and get in. For the fence, something to keep gators out with a hawk net over. I would also keep the food & water in the run to keep critters out of the coop. Gravity feeders will be so helpful. You can hang the waterers up with plant hangers too! So excited I just found your channel!

Somehow, the UA-cam algorithm delivered you to me tonight.
You guys are going to have a lot of fun and a lot of memories. I've been there and done that. I cleared the timber off the land in SC and built the house, horse barn, and arena while living in our horse trailer.
I can't give you much advice on chickens, but I can tell you quite a bit about horses. And if you have wild hogs around, build a big barbeque pit; I think you mentioned the burrows for the turtles in your first video and depressions from the previous cattle. I've never seen cattle do that, but hogs will tear up some pasture, and they are delicious!
Take care and keep having fun.

Raise your chicken water bucket up higher, maybe 5”’or so up off the ground. If not, the water spout will get dirty or fill up with wood shavings real quick when the chickens kick the wood shavings around. Find some wood blocks (again, about 5” or so high) and set the water bucket on top of the wood blocks 👍.
Next thing I’d be concern about is living in that area, Everglades, plenty of snakes. Having chickens will attract snakes. So you might lose some eggs because snakes eat chicken eggs, as well as chickens themselves. Also BE CAREFUL when reaching your hands into the nest boxes collecting eggs. Might be a snake coiled in there underneath all the straw. As well as be careful in the storage room (where you keep extra feed/straw/wood shavings) because snakes like to hide in those areas as well. Maybe for snake deterrent, get some Guinea fowls. Heard they’re pretty aggressive and can/will kill snakes, again, from what I’ve heard 🤷‍♂️.
Beautiful “Chicken Taj Mahal” 👍💯👌 !!!

Before too long your gonna think your c coop was mounted on articulating wheels to allow the run ground to expand, nourish, and regenerate. Now, for your perusal, the Kelly Young UA-cam Channel DID an episode on hobby scale backyard chicken husbandry. And, for your specific information: Kelly's commercial vendor retail hen provider, utilizes the (as huge) towable wagon coop
    concept .
The farm and contact names in South Florida are available. The channel episode # escapes my attention here.

      @JohnathanAulabaugh Місяць тому +1

@ you’re welcome. Another avenue, though you’d still need a small solor panel, would be a geo thermal AC. There are DIY options to make it work but oddly you don’t see them often here despite the ground temp keeping a fairly constant temp of 72 degrees year round just 6 inches below the surface. Solar would absolutely be less work, but a little more expensive. Anyways, enjoying the channel so far, keep working toward that goal.

We have 5 chickens and they will sit in our lap and fall asleep. Or roost atop my head. They know their names and come when called.

FWC biologists had spotted and reported panther tracks in Seminole County north of Orlando back in 2011 just a few days before a panther was found shot to d____h close to the same area in Geneva, Fl. FWC biologists have also reported releasing panthers throughout the state. FWC also has a map on their website showing locations of proven panther sightings as far north as St. Augustine.

Really nice coop and very sympathic family! Not sure if mites are a topic in the US, but here in Germany you read everywhere to not use hay in the coop, because the straws are hollow inside and so it's a great hiding place for mites.
Merry xmas and a happy new year!

Predators can get in where you collect nesting boxes so figuring out how you can lock that down!

Look at Kioti Tractors. They are very high quality, and have a lot of easy-to-use features. With your size farm, I would consider something in the 40- 50 horsepower range. There are so many great attachment….pallet forks, buckets, rotary mowers (PTO), post hole augers, and much more.

You guys really need an LGD. Best option against the predators from north Florida. The best lgd for chickens is a Great Pyriness.

If the floor wood, id suggest you put down vinyl which won't absorb the odor. Great video guys ❤❤...
