    Vikings is so under rated,Travis Fimmel made Ragnar my most loved character in a show ever. Your reactions are so good as you actually watch & feel the journey we are on. Many miss the small things....wish you could do them daily!

      And it definitely made a lot of people forget that Travis Fimmel was a model before he got into acting (there's rumours that his Calvin Klein billboard caused traffic jams) - though many would say that being the first male int he world to secure a six-figure deal to model exclusively for Calvin Klein for just a year is nothing to sneeze at).

    I think one of the things that fuel Ivar's anger is that he's constantly in pain and probably breaks a bone everyday he just doesn't show it so that he doesn't look weak and fragile in front of the Vikings.

      This is 100% correct! The actor asked Michael Hirst "is Ivar in pain?" and Hirst answered that Ivar is in psychical pain all the time because of his condition. And Alex brought that into his acting as well, especially his eyes.

    When talking with Ivar, Lagertha stayed unflinching the entire time until he promised to kill her. She took that seriously because she's made that exact same promise before. Also, we know from Ragnar's conversation from the seer last episode what he thinks about Lagertha getting help from the seer... "You presented her a destiny, and she manifested it." Has the seer ever given Lagertha good news? Yet she keeps going back to him. She's definitely one of the most faithful and unwaveringly religious of all of the characters, Ragnar, Rollo, Ecbert, Athelstan, Aethelwulf, even Floki have questioned their watch, but Lagertha stays true. Interestingly, this isn't even the first time Lagertha asked the seer about her death. She asked several seasons ago, and he told her that perhaps in the future, he'll tell her about her death. And now she's back.
    Historically, Vikings and Muslims had a very different relationship than Vikings and Christians. Vikings actually developed good relations with Muslims, they traded together, visited each other, worked with each other, etc. In fact, much of our historical knowledge about Vikings comes from the Muslim civilizations of the time, which were much more advanced and kept lots of written accounts of Vikings. Floki's reaction, and the difference from his reaction to Christians, is a nod to that history.
    This also fits Floki's character as well as where he is right now in his arc. Christians ran away at the sight of invaders which Vikings find cowardly, whereas the Muslims that Floki saved weren't afraid at all. So immediately there was respect there. Also, whereas the Christians immediately presented treasure to steal and images of a new god to hate, the Muslims presented abstract artwork and designs - very similar to Floki's own carvings and sculpture-work. Floki is a craftsman, and in the mosque he was able to admire pure craftsmanship and pure faith, two things that resonate very strongly with him.
    The story of Odin delivering the news is taken from the Norse sagas, which are their traditional legends based on real history, but with their mythology inserted into the storytelling, very similar to the the Greek Iliad and Odyssey for example. It's a mythological representation of history, so Vikings presents it that way cinematically, whether or not that's how things actually happened or not, that's what the characters in the story think and how the story was retold. It's very interesting the exact timing of it - the very moment Bjorn reaches the Mediterranean Sea. Bjorn has been obsessed with this one goal since Paris - it's why he declined to go to England with Ragnar. He wasn't going to think about anything else until he reached the Mediterranean - but as soon as he did, he realized his father must be dead. He knows how long it takes to get to England and he knows 3 boats of old men are doomed to die; in the back of his mind he knows his father must be dead by now (all the sons do), but he just wasn't able to truly think about it and let it sink in until he succeeded in his goal of reaching the Mediterranean. Also, Wardruna's music is never anything but amazing.

    Yes the Vikings did cross over with Muslims in Spain, but it didn't go as smooth as this episode shows..
    In real history the Vikings where defeated and most of their ships where distrotyed, some of them even converted, and later on Vikings traded with Muslims and some worked as bodyguards for Muslim chiefs..
    In fact a lot of what we know today about Vikings came from Muslim sources from that era
    I was recently reading a book by a Muslim scholar "the journey of Ibn-Fadlan" and i was amazed of how much the show took from that book

    Floki is a very spiritual man. The reason I think he protected the Muslims is because they didnt stop praying even in the face of death. When the leader of prayer was beheaded in front of them someone else stepped up to take his place as they continued. He respected that. Not to mention they didnt speak the same language and they were seemingly praying to nothing unlike the Christians. For all he knew they could have been worshiping the Norse gods too. There was no way to know so best not to kill them.

  • @kingwacky184
    @kingwacky184 4 роки тому +7

    I do not think it is that Floki is intrigued I think it is more like he is afraid. He is a very spiritual man, his faith towards the viking GODS is very strong and he seeing them praying like that with no visual GODS present it scares him. For all he know they could be praying to another version of Odin. That is what I believe. He fears the GODS wrath.

    • @kyuujinreacts
      @kyuujinreacts  4 роки тому +4

      Interesting 🤔 I could see it! Pure faith without any representation of the gods, is both beautiful and powerful, I could see how Floki would be disturbed (if not straight up scared) of such intense belief

    2:03 Odin is anywhere he wants to be. He's any age he wants to be - don't forget he was a shapeshifter too, just like his sworn blood brother Loki (not sure if the difference is that unlike Loki Odin never got caught or that unlike Loki Odin was always able to talk his way out of it fully rather than partly re the story when Loki nearly lost his head but ended up having his mouth sewn shut instead).

    In English it's a mosque, just pronounced like 'mosk', kind of like how you pronounced it but without the 'ee' on the end. I think the reason Floki felt so attracted to the mosque and the Muslims praying was that it was kind of the opposite of his initial experience with the churches where everyone ran and screamed. In the mosque, everyone just kept praying even when the prayer leader was killed. So I think it's both that and also how spiritually empty he feels at the moment. Honestly, I kind of disliked this episode, maybe partly because I'm a Muslim, and I'm a little biased :p, but it's odd that the city had no army? At this time, Spain was either part of or closely tied to the strongest empire in the world, I can't imagine there was no army posted in a port city.

    • @kyuujinreacts
      @kyuujinreacts  4 роки тому +4

      Since you guys mentioned not knowing much about Islam in the context of the show, for the briefest rundown I can possibly do, it's a western-Abrahamic faith like Judaism and Christianity, they (or, well, we) believe in the God of Abraham, all the prophets, including Muhammad, and in Islam Jesus is not the son of god but just a prophet. By this time period in the show, the Islamic empire would've been in Spain for about 50 or so years, I think. They also controlled North Africa and basically the whole southern/eastern Mediterranean. That's why Rollo knew about them.

      @Alexander Brunnrgaard Yes, the Abbasids never ruled Spain directly but the Moors, before declaring their own caliphate, technically swore allegiance to the Caliph in Baghdad, even if they were essentially totally independent. So technically speaking, this would still be considered Caliphal territory until the establishment of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

    I think the writer dropped the plot in this episode with the raiding of Spain. They had sixty ships and all the main characters just happened to land on the same place. It would also have been more interesting to see the interaction with different cultures instead of the meaningless raiding, chaos, rape and killing of innocents. I'm especially disappointed with the portrayal of Björn. A great future was "foreseen" for him but he does not show any intelligence or qualities that made Ragnar great.
