@War Band So why it is not reformed? Reforms are great, you should apply reforms in more aspects of your constitution (yeah, talking about guns too). Not trying to be agressive here, but do they not teach world history in the US? Because we roughly were taught how world and society evolved. About the separation thing, what do you mean by that? I would "forgive" him some minor fck up, but confusing achamenid persians (500 BC) with MUSLIMS (!!!) from the viking age (or any other age in that matter, lol) is just...arogant, or what. Allow me to shed light on the historical context. When Vikings came into the middle east, and when quite specifically approached Spain. Spain was a country under the Muslim Occupation as the Aummyat Caliphate was at its peak with the conquering of the middle east, the Mediterranean sea, and parts of Europe. While it wasn't the Golden age of Islam in regards to civilization and technology because that will come later on with the Abbasi Caliphate. It was however the period where Islam conquered the most lands in its history.
It's so sad how islam was soooooo strong but because these days us muslims have weak Iman we are sooo weak but in the hadith Allah promised us victory near judgment day
I think Floki was moved by their faith. Those people were so at peace with dying and he probably had respect for it. Also, I don't think he would have an issue with Christianity if he didn't see it as pretty much the cause of all of their problems. I mean ever since they came in contact with Christians it's led to so many bad things in Floki's life and he truly believed that it poisoned the mind of his friends like Ragnar and Rollo. I love that scene at the end with Odin going to all of Ragnar's sons. He really was that dude and I think that was to symbolize him going into Valhalla after all.
To run through some of the history, the battle in 300 with the Persians was Greek pagans against Persian Zoroastrians. Zoroastrianism is a monotheistic religion that is kind of similar in a way to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in that it's one God and a good and evil philosophy but it's not part of that family of religions. Persians wouldn't become Muslims until about a thousand years later. The place that the Vikings raided this time was Islamic Spain, the Muslim population there was mostly Moors (which is a sort of general term for North African Muslims who were in Spain, so Arabs, Berbers, Africans, etc), in fact, at this time, Spain was part of the largest empire in the world, stretched from Spain to India and China, all in the same empire, called the Umayyad Caliphate, ruled from Syria, though it was beginning to fracture and break away by this point. In my opinion, that might be the reason why there was no response to the raid, the empire was falling apart around this time. The actual history of Vikings and Muslims is mostly based around trade. Vikings realized early on that places like France and the Muslim world were too heavily fortified to raid, so they ended up trading mostly. Even today, they sometimes find things from Iraq, Syria, Persia, and Egypt in Scandinavia.
Persians are Iranians guys, but the Persian Empire that was conquered by Alexander the Great stretched far beyond the modern borders of Iran, into Turkey, Egypt and much of the middle east.
Lagertha is crazy and is not fit to rule. Not only did she convince herself that Aslaug was a witch but now she's claiming to see a dead person and that this person wants her to be a ruler. They need to get her out the way the same way they did Earl Haraldson and Jarl Borg for committing the same horrible acts. It's no different, she's just as bad as them.
@Makeda Melaku She's crazy because she uses it to justify her actions, she is now convinced that Ragnar would've wanted her to do what she did. Even though he hated Jarl Borg for committing the same act. It's no different from when Horik used fate to justify his mistakes. Same with Floki, he used religion to justify the killing of Athelstan but we all know it was because of jealousy. She's crazy like them because she has to convince herself that her horrible acts are right. She potentially started up a civil war and had no accountability whatsoever. And it doesn't help that she now believes Aslaug is witch, especially since it came out of nowhere. It's been twenty years and she supposedly moved on, she told Ragnar that their breakup was fate and even slept with him and Aslaug. But now she wants to bring up this nonsense with little to no proof but of something that was told to her twenty years ago that was left open to interpretation. Also you mentioned that Aslaug was doing stuff that disrespected their gods but it seems no else was offended but Lagertha so I doubt that was happening. You also brought up Lagertha's one defense of Kattegat but you can just flip that and say, well she allowed Ivar to live and Harald to escape. Which ofcourse is horrible decision making as a ruler considering the context. All I have to say for the Aslaug situation is that when she was ruling, there was peace and prosper for nine to ten years, and since her passing there's just been war and death. I think my criticism's of Lagertha are valid because she's committing the same acts as Rollo, Horik, Borg, Floki and Haraldson, and at one point or another they were considered "Villains."
@Makeda Melaku What are you talking about? I'm criticizing her for essentially doing the same thing Haraldson, Borg, Horik and Rollo did. Earl Haraldson attacked the farm and tried to slaughter everyone, so did Jarl Borg when he attacked, as well as Horik when he attempted. And ofcourse Rollo when join forces with Borg and when he betrayed his people and had them killed in Paris. It's the same thing when she attacked and started up a civil war. I have also criticized Ragnar in the past for allowing his people to be killed in Paris, so there's that. And it wasn't her home to take back, she chose to leave over twenty years ago and only lived there for maybe a year or two. Aslaug on the other hand lived there most of her life, raised her kids there and when the King abandoned the people she was the one who stepped up made Kattegat what it is, it's her home. And yes she's trying to justify her actions by basically saying Ragnar would've wanted her to rule successfully. She thinks he would be ok with that.
The persians were zoroastrians. Islam was not a thing before 600-700 AD. Come on. Not even Christianity was a thing when the old persian Empire was rocking the middle east. Nobody ? None of you has at least a little bit of history in their heads?
In the 300 they were fighting Persians. The Muslim faith didn’t exist at that time. & while they did eventually become Muslim these aren’t the same people in Spain Here in Vikings, the Muslims in Spain are from North Africa-Algiers, Libya, Morocco-these are people of Berber & Arabic ancestry as well as some Sub Saharan origin. Many of their soldiers here were converts of sub Saharan origin In this storyline the Muslims have been in Spain for 200 years & will remain for another 500 before they are forced back across the strait of Gibraltar by the armies of Isabella of Castile & Ferdinand of Aragon I think at their height the kingdom or emirate of Granada (where Bjorn & company are) had 7 million Muslims-about 5 million colonizers & 2 million native converts with a small minority remaining Catholic & Jewish
