John Amos was awesome! The way he kept looking at JJ. Staring at him a few seconds longer when Florida was talking that’s what a real father does. Everybody's not made for college. My stepfather was a high school dropout, but he went to trade school, and was licensed in construction. My stepfather could build a house from the ground up with his bare hands! He had a very lucrative career, and our house was sharp! 🏠
Here's my thing. Trade Schools are not for dummies. College is cool & all but in 2021 getting a college degree isn't as relevant like it was back in these days. Plumbers, carpenters, roofers, brick layers, truck drivers, electricians, painters, construction, etc... will always be necessary in any society. Many of which comes with high paying salaries.
We also need to think about how to retrain people as they age. And we shouldn’t be promoting vocational education at the expense of general education. Expanding the number of four-year college graduates also deserves to be a national priority. They continue to fare much better in the job market than people who have not had the benefit of a broad, flexible education. “The largest problem of skills in the U.S. today isn’t a shortage of young workers with specific competencies,” Eric Hanushek, one of the researchers and a Stanford professor, wrote in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed. “Instead it is a need for more general cognitive skills that give workers the ability to adapt to new circumstances and new jobs.” Vocational education, done right, helps workers find jobs when they are young. But as they age - and job requirements change - workers are often not well prepared for the changes, according to the study, published in The Journal of Human Resources. Rather than retraining workers, many companies decide to let them go and hire other workers. Most strikingly, the research found that people who received a broad, general education earned more over their lifetimes than otherwise similar people (that is, with similar test scores and years of schooling) who had attended vocational programs. Notably, the vocational graduates in most countries were more likely to be unemployed while older.
@@darristhomas5602 In many trade professions, employees attend seminars to update their skills and many jobs have trainings for their employees on the use of new equipment and technology. When you work in a profession for many years, it is not that hard to adapt to new technology and skills. If anything, college works more against you these days. Employers are reluctant to hire college grads for entry level positions for fear that a college grad would feel slighted by such a small job. College is only worthwhile now unless you major in a technical field.
