Again a very informative video. Even living on the other side of the world, I now fully understand the enormous consequences of beaver dams and the flooding it brings. It’s nice to learn things, cause you so well explain them. Thanks for taking the time and sharing.

      An important thing about beavers.
When they cut down trees to build/feed they leave pointy 1ft (~.3m?) Stumps that are an extreme trip hazard.
Meaning if you tripped on one or something you could land on what is effectively a punji stick and could get seriously injured.
But they do play an important role in the ecology of North America.

I was born and raised in Oregon and have hiked all over for over 60 years and the only hiking trails lve seen that were paved were up by Portland. You must have been in California 😉 to find only paved trails. Tho lve hiked miles and miles down in northern California and never walked on a paved trail.

    • @jasonreed7522
      @jasonreed7522 3 роки тому

@@tinaredington1292 its probably an exaggerating, but out east many trails are basically just game trails.
"Famous" mountains will tend to have wider trails but even they get rough near the top when you run into exposed bedrock. The Northeast was scrapped clean by glaciers so the mountains have basically no soil on them relatively speaking, and of course the peak of any mountain will have less dirt than the base.
I wouldn't trade my forest covered mountains for anything, they are just too pretty and unpopulated.

It's really relaxing to listen to your stories, and explanations while watching the videos.
I can to some extent understand that you could sound "angry" to some people, but I believe that is just a result of your intonation, and generally low pitch voice. The fact that you are also passionate about the things you talk about could possibly make you sound "insistent", which some may interpret as anger. This is just guesswork on my part, and I hope that you don't feel the need to change anything to accommodate us. You do you! 🙂
With regard to hating the beavers; I can't understand how anyone who has seen more than half a video could get that impression. From my point of view it is obvious that you have great compassion for animals in general (perhaps excluding the mosquitos 🦟), and definitely the beavers. If anything you sound thoroughly impressed by them, rather than mad that they keep clogging the culverts. Animals are naturally bad at reading signs, and legal documents, so there will always be some border conflicts when we co-exist with them. As you have explained multiple times there are places where beavers can't be allowed to build due to human infrastructure, but then there are other places where their dams are protected by law, so that humans can't impose on them. That's just the way it has to be I guess.
Thank you for your seemingly endless supply of stories, sights, and of course your extreme dedication to those around you. 🙂👍 🦫

The 's-brackets' are still used! Here in Europe they're very commonly used on naturally dried lumber - lumber is cut, dries for maybe a few weeks and then has those S-ties driven in the ends to keep the wood from splitting while it dries another few months. It's only used on some types of wood, presumably either because the logs are used whole (those ties probably don't play well with sawmills) or because that particular lumber is very prone to splitting. Don't know the particulars, but I see them all the time on walks through managed forests.

You sure have the beautiful scenery there. Post, apologize but would have taken the S thing at the end of the railroad tie. My reasoning would have been the horses. If they stepped on that cause it came off. It would injure the bottom of the hoof. That's logic for you. The end was great. The bumble bee and the flower. Happy you spotted that yellow jacket nest. 🦫🪵🦫🌻🐝🍄🐎🐎🏞️🛤️🚂🗻

Those "S" brackets are used to stop the tie, also known as a sleeper from splitting more than it has. Same for the spiked bar you saw. The square one is similar to the ones to fasten roof joists together in new home construction.

Fun fact. That train actually goes to presby plastics and they make plastic culverts!! Lol. My Dad used to manage the little airport next to Pondicherry and I used to hike back there a lot as a kid.

Post 10 that newer nail head marked “civil consultants” with a “POR” marked in the middle stands for “ Point Of Reference” used when using a surveyor scope. A lot of them will even be stamped with an elevation #. Good video!! Keep up the great work!!

I like your confident suspicious tone at 8:48 "beavers have been involved..." and then a moment of silence ... . We immediatly got the picture, the sentence alone said it all. Love to watch your vids post10, keep up the great work! You're a great inspiration!

@Post 10 I hope knowing that I play your videos at night to soothe me to sleep helps you feel better. Your voice is so peaceful to me. I learn a ton! I also started carrying an adjustable garden rake in my trunk b/c I live in the PNW and after watching your videos realized I see street flooding all the time and now I can do something about it.
Lastly, like I said I do live “out west”, and in this video you have cured me of any inkling I’ve had to hike out east. I actually moved from Hawaii to the PNW. We have ZERO snakes in Hawaii. You saw more snakes in your day hike than I’ve seen in the couple decades I’ve lived and hiked over here.

I've seen people eat those "puff mushrooms", but I always preferred to wait until they're past ripe and then jump on them.
