I have a wonderful NEC PA322UHD 4k 32" monitor with an IPS panel. I use it for photo/video editing and it's as good as displays get. However, I *hate* how black looks actually dark gray (or even not so dark gray if you look at it even at a moderate angle). If burn-in is not an issue, I would definitely be interested in an OLED monitor. The contrast is incomparable.

I'm a pro photographer. I can't find any information about UI burn-in. I can see how it is amazing as maybe a secondary, UI-element-free playback grading monitor for movies, but when I'm in Lightroom and Photoshop will all of the editing panels, a MacOS dock and menu bar... how long until those are permanently etched into the display? Does this screen have advanced reflection handling?

Why are there so many gamers here? This monitor is clearly not for you. You don't need super fast high refresh rates for the kind of colour grading work this can be used for. And the brightness is often specifically adjusted for dark rooms to industry standards, so high brightness is often avoided. Gamut, contrast ratios, and black levels are what I'm interested in and this looks good on that front.

Primary "apples-to-apples"-comparison would be the "Sony (BVM-)HX310"-mastering-monitor, which costs 40K$USA.
So this OLED-monitor costs only 10th of the price (4K$USA) while offering very comparable performance for the job.

Just want to point out, its MARKETED for "professional color accurate work" but in all honesty, this was just their own market segmentation through "price" because if they sold this monitor for a "fair price" and "typical profits" NO ONE would buy their crappier IPS monitors they released this year (and they released like 8 new models this year). They didn't want to "shoot themselves in the foot".
I desperately want an OLED gaming monitor, even if its 4k 60hz as long as it has black frame insertion, it would be GODLY. regardless of what the ignorant internet (reddit) claims. Hopefully samsung doesn't let us down with QD-OLED supposedly launching early next year....

In the words of "Vincent Teoh / HDTVTest" in his review of this LG 32EP950 OLED Monitor:
"Always use protection if you can."
In his much more detailed ~20-minute analysis-review, he mentions that this monitor has surprisingly good image-retention-resistance.
And thus as long as you're NOT intentionally / deliberately trying to cause the burn-ins to happen especially by disabling the "Screen Shift"-feature, you are very unlikely going to experience the burn-ins in the first place.

OLED doesn't burn in as much as people think they do. Right now millions of people have OLED phones and none of them are bitching about burn in. HOWEVER, go to reddit/r/oled and you will hear all these little twats crying about their burn in issues. MOST of them are abusing their TV by disabling safety features or cranking brightness to max values. And they wonder why their shit breaks aka burns in. In reality, the reason for burn in comes down to two things. VOLTAGE and HEAT. In order to get brighter pixels, they apply more VOLTAGE to a pixel. This also means it will produce more heat. LG's newest TV line has higher peak brightness, and due to power and heat, they also put on them a thicker heatsink to wick the heat away.
The OLED monitor only hits 250nits max in SDR. And this IF you crank the screen to 100%. Right now I have two gaming monitors, 1080p 240hz alienware which caps out around 400 peak nits and my samsung 1440p 144hz HDR monitor which caps out at 600 nits. BOTH are tuned to 100nits. Because there is literally NO REASON to have higher peak brightness regardless of what youtubers claim is required for "nice hdr" they are full of shit and they don't even know why they are full of shit. mass agreement of a lie doesn't make it true, its still a lie. in this case, the lie that HDR requires peak brightness. this is wrong, hdr is about contrast ratios. which is why certifications like dolby vision require a tv to have 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, which only a few tv's can actually hit. if we start talking STATIC contrast ratios, most tv's are around 1000:1 to 3000:1 which is abysmally low. meanwhile OLED itself has a 1,000,000:1 STATIC contrast ratio, while their dynamic is rated infinite:1.... which blows the HDR spec out of the water. meaning you don't need insane nits. PEAK BRIGHTNESS is a TV marketing war between companies to force people into buying "their superior TV" even when the customer doesn't understand that nits aren't everything. You'll see youtubers like HDTVtest claiming 4000 peak nits HDR tv's are super amazing, except right now 4000 nits televisions are made for outdoors use, because you need that higher nits to overcome the brighter ambient light produced by the sun. hell most sports stadiums have screens ranging from 3000 nits to 10,000 nits. should we just use those displays for HDR? NO, because their color accuracy will be ass.

I have a more specific question I hope you or someone here can answer. On LG's official website it is stated that the panel uses anti-glare, however at the 3:10 mark I see some signs of it actually being glossy. Or is it something between like semi-gloss? I'm not a creator, but as a consumer I much prefer glossy displays over matte ones, which is impossible to find in higher end monitors nowadays other than maybe the new Apple display which isn't for consumers obviously just like this LG. Would be a first that I see an OLED with anti glare since all the TVs are glossy by my knowledge. Not everyone needs a matte coating for their room and it's beyond annoying we don't even get the option anymore to get a superior display when there are no other light sources to combat, looks like not even professionals have any other option than Apple if this really has Anti Glare on it. Any answer is appriciated thanks!

    • @goblinphreak2132
      @goblinphreak2132 3 роки тому +1

joled panels actually aren't that expensive. lg is doing "market segmentation through price." classic rgb panels are cheaper to manufacture than lg's wrgb panels. if you can get a 48" LG tv for 1400, there is no reason why a 32" classic rgb monitor is 4 grand. LG knows this. but because they released all these new ips monitors this year, they would essentially "shoot themselves in the foot" if they released a fair priced 32" oled monitor because no one would buy their crapper ips monitors.... its all about business. they also probably didn't buy many panels from joled because LG Display, the "other" LG business, is probably working towards making their own OLED panels of the same size. so they didn't want to contractually buy too many from joled only to end up not using them. with a limited run, they want more profits per sale.

HDR10+ is a television standard and is absolutely meaningless in the actual monitor market. Not to mention the cost of 10,000 dollars for certification fee annually. The only details needed for HDR10+ is essentially the ability to use a PQ curve, which this monitor does in fact support. Peak nits doesn't matter as their own marketing material for HDR10+ mentions 150nits displays which is insanely low. They only mention "up to" for specs and not a "minimum". The only minimum requirement would be the PQ curve. At least from the official HDR10+ website which is ignorantly crap to explore and find information. Unlike VESA, a monitor certification, which has all the information easy to find and read.
As far as 100hz. That's subjective to the individual. The biggest reason GAMERS want 100hz or higher is because increasing refresh rate increases motion clarity. Many will mention that 60hz looks "choppy" and 120hz looks "smoother." This has to do with how monitors and televisions display information, which is called sample and hold. The higher the refresh rate, the better the motion clarity. However, there is a hidden negative to this, which is pixel response time. The AVERAGE gaming monitor has about a 12ms pixel response time. And I am fluffing that number because in reality, its worse. A 60hz display means 16.6ms per refresh aka 1hz. A 360hz monitor in this relation would be 2.7ms per 1hz. The pixels on typical gaming monitors can't even change that fast. So you end up with MORE motion blur even though you have 360hz. A downside gamers don't even realize they are doing to themselves. Technically, I'm a gamer, so i shouldn't' talk about myself like that XD Jokes aside, with the average 12ms response time number, the best accuracy for motion clarity comes down to 80hz which is 12.5ms per 1hz. Pretty freaking low. ON THE FLIP SIDE, OLED which has about a true 1ms pixel response, would mean if we have a 1000hz display, each 1hz would be 1ms, and it would work flawlessly. This isn't gonna happen anytime soon.... hell they can't even get 480hz out until "2024" according to news sources.... and even then, pixel response will be so slow that it wont work correctly. As 480hz would require a 2ms pixel response time, which no monitor today can do, not a single one. The best monitors are 4ms at their fastest and around 12ms at their slowest.
ANOTHER solution to motion blur is to use black frame insertion. For LCD monitors this means flickering the backlight in time with pixel changes. AS the pixel changes, light turns on, then turns off. When the next pixel changes, light comes on again. The "off" period "simulates" a black frame, but its not perfect. OLED black frame insertion, actually turns the pixels off. With pixels being insanely fast as it is, this makes the technology superior in every way. A 60hz OLED with BFI enabled (like the LG CX with their motion pro on high) looks like a 240hz+ monitor which does NOT have black frame insertion. That means the motion clarity even for 60hz IF you have BFI enabled, would be so smooth that you wouldn't say "I need 100hz". Now don't get me wrong, you would probably want 120hz + BFI because that is even better than 60hz + BFI. But its a point that has to be talked about.
IF RIGHT NOW a company offered a reasonably priced OLED gaming monitor, I don't care about peak nits, I don't care about color accuracy (even though oled is already pretty accurate anyway), which features a 4k resolution with 60hz, as long as it had BFI like Sony and LG OLED television.... I would buy it in a heartbeat. And so would many other gamers. The insane pixel response mixed with black frame insertion would absolutely bring back the feeling of using a CRT monitor. Hell a part of me wants to try and find a local retro store just to buy a CRT so I can shit on kids in FPS games like I used to. Slow ass gaming monitors today are a joke in comparison to CRT....

@@leonardwood7207 OLED televisions usually get the certification for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision because they are in fact televisions. Generally all you need is the ability to support the PQ curve developed by Dolby Vision.
TECHNICALLY the 32ep950 monitor supports PQ curves, so in theory, its certified for Dolby Vision and HDR10+, even though they didn't PAY for the certification.
Certification isn't free. They have to pay dolby and the people who run hdr10+ money to get tested and pass/fail. Monitors generally don't need TV certifications, so why waste money getting them certified?

In Germany/EU the Apple Pro Display XDR is about 5000 Euro plus the 1000 Euro for the Apple Stand, together nearly 6000 Euro. The LG 32ep950-b (preorder) starts at roundabout 3300 Euros. That’s a huge price difference. Furthermore I think the price will drop with better availability and possible future OLED monitor competition.
Where the XDR shines is resolution, brightness and build quality. Local dimming and contrast ratio as well as true black should be in favor of the LG OLED monitor. Every pixel of an OLED equals one dimming zone.
