I tried surfing in Honololu and California.. when 18 and ocean City, Maryland when in late 60's and never stood up in any place. I have a lot excuses why I never stood up.. You did pretty good !!
Poor patch well that looks like lots of fun, that’s really going to be a part of your best memories when your old like me lol 😂 so enjoy everything your doing as I see you are love your videos cheers 🥂 Pete
While I should not complain, I can say this year has seemed so closed off for us. I'm retired military and do property management, which over the past 6 months i have limited to very little. My wife is a nurse and works lots of overtime. Our son is a second year electrical engineering student at Arizona state university, but now is learning from home for all but one class a week. None of wants to be part of the pandemic problem and because of my wife's job if the virus comes to us we need to be pretty certain where it came from if it comes into our home. That said. We have been very closed off. I think we all feel like we are living on the moon and are feeling a bit pent up to say the least. With the blah blah said above to give you my point of reference I can better relate my message. Every time you guys put out a new video my heart gets lifted. You are like lockdown blues medicine. Thank you for everything you do! Have you ever tried kite boarding? I could not surf at all...sucked bad...and i figure I would be twice the failure at kite boarding but always wanted to give it a go.
Hi Randy, Learning to kite board is one of the items on our bucket list, it was there even before we started this adventure 4 years ago. Our problem is we don't have a big enough dinghy to buzz around as safety boat whilst we are learning. We were hoping to stop in a lagoon in South Africa where they teach kite boarding and learn there, maybe we will get there next year instead now. Thanks for taking the time to write us that message. :-)
Hi, I have to complement you, its great watching your adventure, you got the best lockdown location in the world. Enjoy every moment, we are dreaming of owning a sailboat and sailing the oceans of the world, in the meantime we are watching you living the dream, we live in South Africa, hope your journey coming here will work out, our seas are a challenge, so be safe.
Hope your able to move soon the world is a mess at the moment hoping for a better year next year. Love watching your videos really looking forward to your next one. Stay safe x
I bought you said you couldn't surf🤔Straight away, you are standing up,having a good go at it,some good natural ability I'd say👌You must have a good supply of some kind of legal tender to pay the food man, seeing you have no access to a teller machine or bank.I'm sure you'll be able to get your hands on another board somewhere before leaving this surfing mecca, poor patch😢I won't miss next week,I'm sure I've mentioned it before,I love your dinghy,so versatile, and the sailing rig you have for it,is the best I've seen.Best wishes🙂
Shame you didn’t find your love for surfing whilst you were crossing the Pacific as there are some amazing breaks out there. Now you’ll have to go back! 😜 Great vid again guys!
“Rest in Pieces Patch” That’s brilliant. You guys amaze me at how you make the most out of every situation. Hope you can get a new board soon. You’ll be pro surfers in no time.
OMG you guys are in one of the best locations in the world to surf. Looks like perfect Covid country to me as an Aussie surfer who lives in land locked Canada. 4c here this AM. If you have the means, buy 2 cheap boards if you have the room on board it’s so much fun to surf together! Love the vids!
Love your channel and always optimistic attitudes despite some pretty dire circumstances! Keep up the good waor...BTW, what is that great music in the background?
So glad you seem to have some contentment and something to achieve! Hopefully you will find a patch II! Good luck with it all, keep on weathering the storm like all sailors have had too! Loved the video.
Been really good to watch how you have adapted to isolation. You seem to be so content and care free now it’s like you may struggle with leaving there and going back to normality (what ever COVID normality will look like.) wishing you all the best x
Wow just wow!!! I have just stumbled upon you channel whilst procrastinating. I absolutely loved your video and have subsribed. Im looking forward to checking out the rest of your content! What an adventure, what amazing inspirational people. One Life, One Search, Peace Out Shane
Id say for someone that has not surfed before you are doing quite well. If you where not on a island id send you a box of PG tips and maybe some custard. haha. stay safe guys x
Seems to me that some thickened epoxy and some strips of fiberglass would patch old patch back together pretty well. A few hours of sanding and you would have a solid board again.
Really impressed with your positive attitude! I am also interested to know how it is that you both (almost) always look so well turned out. I know from experience how difficult keeping clean and washing clothes is, particularly in the hot and humid place where you are now.
Poor Patch. 😢 Was wondering however. If you could core out 3 -5 slots and dowel it with epoxy. Like doweling wooden furniture, if you could get some more time with it.
I wish there was a like/laugh/love button in lieu of the thumbs up ... Having said that, I'm not sure if I'd choose laugh or love... Thanks for another great episode! Take care of yourselves.
Great episode as always. I am so happy you were blessed with Patch.... I am surprised no other yacht has a surfer aboard. Wishing you continued safety and joy.
Looks idyllic. I lived in Bermuda in my twenties and was able to sail every weekend and snorkel after work. I then returned to work in the City of London and commuted to work. I found it tough to adapt back to the rat race. I would keep doing what you are doing for as long as possible. I would not be in a rush to get back to England.
Morgan to Amy & Matt Aboard Sailing Yacht Florence First Day of Autumn 21 September, 2020 Hello Matt & Amy, You are both generous and gracious to offer such enjoyable videos so that many of us may explore and learn with you. After following you across the the Atlantic, the Pacific and Southeast Asia, I thought you both might be confronting a new kind of challenge as you ride out the covid-19 restrictions before tackling the Indian Ocean. This evening, I checked to see how you are doing--and am happy to find that you are enjoying the weekly visits from the "Food Boat," & the late/great "Patch." I so enjoy your videos because I love tropical seas, and have explored the world underwater in NE Australia, Figi, Bermuda, the Caribbean (Caymans), and Polynésie Française, including the Tuamotus. I am likewise relieved that you have a healthy respect for "salties" (saltwater crocs) in Southeast Asia, and look forward to following you further, and to supporting you through your channel. Best wishes, Sincerely, Morgan
lf you have the fiberglass and epoxy and a few pieces of wood for stringers, you could patch up Patch! You would need to shorten it some to cut out the bad foam sections.
I have had a lot worse looking boards than “Patch”. Thanks for the great video. I thought you might have been vegetarians until I saw the frozen chicken. What about fish and shellfish? Seems like you would have an endless supply.
Love love love your channel Thank you Matt & Amy for taking us away to an amazing place, Looking forward to next episode. From your friends from central coast nsw Australia 🇦🇺 👍👍👍✅✅😎
It's so awesome that you've discovered surfing, especially considering where you're presently located. I discovered surfing when I was in my early 40's and only wished that I'd started much sooner. Learning to surf gives you a whole new perspective, and in your situation something that you can look forward to everyday. Great video!
thanks for giving us hope that we can still crack surfing. Most people here have been surfing since they could stand and the beginner breaks are few and far between! We have sourced two new (to us) boards :-)
I'm Indonesian, nice to see your Yt chanel... my advice, not to ancoring in a big province in Indonesia to avoid quarantine ... here are some places that might be your reference: Pink Beach, East Nusa Tenggara Komodo Island, East Nusa Tenggara Roti Island, East Nusa Tenggara Gili Trawangan, Lombok Islands Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan Bunaken National Park, North Sulawesi Wakatobi Island, Central Sulawesi Selayar Island, South Sulawesi Raja Ampat, West Papua Happy sailing, be safe, GBU
Mr Liang is definitely a smart and reliable sales person... I wouldnt mind payment more, in exchange of the freshest of food, while living in the remotest places. 11:29 wow .. nice..... 14:52 you didnt have the proper utensil to cook the lobster?.... a plier?
after you stand up squat down as low as possible to lower your centre of gravity it will make it a lot easier to stay balanced especially on small waves xx
Hey Matt! You’ll find it a lot easier (And safer) if you put the leash on your back leg (In your case, your left leg!) I have quite a few surfing friends who are moaning incessantly about the fact that their favourite surf spots in the Mentawais are seeing THOUSANDS of waves sliding through, unridden, so enjoy them all you can!
Hi Michel, To be honest I thought my right foot would be my back foot, but when I jumped on the board I popped up right foot forward. I did not notice this until I was editing the video! As you suggest it was much better when I put the leash on my left foot! We are still in Tellos at the moment but plan to visit the Mentawais when restrictions allow. Although the waves there may be a bit big for us beginners!
Hi guys! Keep practicing the take-off (The act of jumping to your feet as fast as possible) until it is both instantaneous and automatic. Best place to practice is with your board on the sand (Boards’ nose pointing gently downhill) Also keep paddling in still water whenever possible to build up shoulder strength. Matt; Pay particular attention to how high your upper chest is off the board when paddling IF you start to develop tenderness in your rib cartilage, due to to constant irritation of rubbing on the board - I have this problem chronically :-( Women hopefully shouldn’t get this problem due to natural cushioning of their breasts. It can be very painful after days and days of surfing.... I’d love to see/hear how you’re doing! :-) Enjoy the ride! (Very jealous!) Cheers, Mike
Well done guys, it’s got to be tough out there (not sarcastic). You’re doing a great job of making good content in tough times. Are you allowed to let us have a look around the other yachts near you, or tell us about what yacht to buy on different requirements/budgets?
Right, binge watched the lot, now I'm ready for the next one. We live on an Irwin 37CC and we're more than twice your age so we'll never get round the world just round our little world on Vancouver Island so watching videos like yours fills the void. Thank you.
Really nice episode guys. You really seemed to be getting the hang of surfing, I hope you find another board soon! Matt, I remember you telling me some time last year that if I could navigate across the English Channel then I could navigate across the Atlantic - well I've now done just that, twice. I decided to return to the UK and set off again next year when (hopefully) verything will be a bit more "normal". My return trip from western Brittany to Plymouth (15/16 Sept) was single handed and took 28 hours, 90% of which was in fog - two firsts in one trip!
Argh Fog! The last time we saw fog was in New Zealand, a long time ago now. Seriously though the Atlantic is just more days of the same sailing (minus the fog) and with less shipping and land to bump into. Sounds like a sensible decision, we could have set off across the Indian Ocean but decided it is best to stay put and try again next year.
Looking forward to more about The Machine next time. We just bought a set of Spindrift 10N plans; we have a 11 1/2 foot Bolger Cartopper which we love, but she's too big to stow on deck. We'll probably recycle the sail and spars from the Cartopper.
You actually need two boards when your learning to big wave surf you can get in real trouble really fast it's better to have a friend along plus it's really fun to surf with a friend
I tried surfing in Honololu and California.. when 18 and ocean City, Maryland when in late 60's and never stood up in any place. I have a lot excuses why I never stood up.. You did pretty good !!
Watching from the birthplace of Patch in Seal Beach CA. Stop by, we have 20 plus boards you can have one
Stay positive guys... RIP Patch, never forget :.(
You did very well at learning to surf
I do enjoy your videos. Thank you
Been surfing for 35 years never gets old...wish I didn’t
Thank you for your service, Patch.
Learning to surf in Indo... what an awesome way to spend isolation.
Poor patch well that looks like lots of fun, that’s really going to be a part of your best memories when your old like me lol 😂 so enjoy everything your doing as I see you are love your videos cheers 🥂 Pete

Best day in the life of a sailor during a pandemic ever. Love your honest hopeful outlook. ✌️
It is nice to see how realistic, adaptable and grateful you are for the things you have. Stay the route. All the best to both of you.

Now you have a boogie board. You can name it Pat.
Like fish to water, you two are naturals on the waves. Another great week in isolation bay. Thank you for another fun episode.
Hope you another board soon. I can so see how that helps the day to day !
“Rest in Pieces Patch” That’s brilliant. You guys amaze me at how you make the most out of every situation. Hope you can get a new board soon. You’ll be pro surfers in no time.

Brilliant! Living in a simple way and enjoying the moment. That is what life should always be... But most of us complicated it. Cheers
"Rest in Pieces" Love it! Thanks for another great video!!!
Thank you. You are doing so well with your isolation video content and staying upbeat. Hope another board comes your way soon.
Oh dear you've caught the surfing bug. I'll wager the rest of your trip will be navigating home via the best surfing beaches.
Fantastic story. One of your best.
Another great video! Have you thought of starting to write a book of your adventures? I would be glad to pre-order a copy!!
Awwwwww!!!! If I had the extra funds, I would try to send you enough resin, hardener and cloth to patch up "Patch"
So glad you seem to have some contentment and something to achieve! Hopefully you will find a patch II! Good luck with it all, keep on weathering the storm like all sailors have had too! Loved the video.

thats awsome! i am on a 5year plan to leave for the sailboat life.
I'm sure with your ingenuity and skills the pair of you can give Patch another lease of life? Great that you two are well and safe
You guys are becoming one of our favorite channels for sure!

Poor patch, you only had him for such a short period of time! Hope you can source a new one!
Great surfing for beginners. Glad you found a way to do it even if it was short lived. Hope you get another board.
Poor Patch. 😢
Was wondering however. If you could core out 3 -5 slots and dowel it with epoxy. Like doweling wooden furniture, if you could get some more time with it.
I love your great attitude towards everything. I love watching your videos!
I love your videos. thank you!
Rest in pieces patch👍👍
I always love your opening and, especially, the closing segment with the dinghy. Looking forward to your next video. Haha
You guys are great 😀
Fantastic, you guys are amazing! Not least for finding interesting content to film during lockdown! Well done!!!
RIP Patch. I love you.
I wish there was a like/laugh/love button in lieu of the thumbs up ... Having said that, I'm not sure if I'd choose laugh or love... Thanks for another great episode! Take care of yourselves.
Hi. Enjoying following your story. Nothing much to say but every comment helps so here it is.
Having fixed an old sailboard that my friend intercepted a rock with, I can feel for poor Patch. Hope you managed to find a Patch 2.
I hope you get another board soon! Keep your chin up, this too shall pass. Make it a great day! 😀
That was a really entertaining episode. Thank you.
Surf Stoke !
Glad you found it.
I always figured you two had it in ya !
Here's hoping you manage to get hold of a replacement board, that looked like fun!
Another great video 😅📸
Great episode as always. I am so happy you were blessed with Patch.... I am surprised no other yacht has a surfer aboard. Wishing you continued safety and joy.

That theme song really inspired me
Great video! Thanks. SV Brooklyn PNW
nice breaks, bravo
You could use patch as a boogie board you’ll need your fins to gets some action of the wave
Looks like good fun. I reckon that board is fixable, just shorten it a little and fibreglass it back up
after you stand up squat down as low as possible to lower your centre of gravity it will make it a lot easier to stay balanced especially on small waves xx
Loved this surfing episode! Well done guys.
I loved guys keep up with the surf
