She just needed to throw it. Dante can call it via telekinesis. He has a move in which he throws it and calls it back
I love the fact the demon doesn't even bother waking up until you start reaching high enough speeds in its vicinity

Yes he can, that's how his pistols don't run out of ammo and can fire energy bullets in the games
