That's why the FAF has hypervelocity missiles (for comparison, in real life only a few countries have barely started on high-velocity missiles, namely India, Russia, and China), portable laser turrets, and AIs on their craft that we can only dream of. But they absolutely refuse to share their technological breakthroughs with any Earth government, and this really pisses off the United Nations and other national governments in the novels (specifically, Japan and America). As for the JAM, yes, we were able to beat them in their first invasion. @UCUIm2RB9h2os9yDiBKaig1w Yeah, but right after this they are bingo fuel and land on the carrier to refuel. So they are multi-fule engines, or did the carrier just happen to have Faery fuel on hand? I watched the series when is was 1st released in the US, but I really don't remember. I suppose I should go back and re-watch it. :)
@@waynecampeau4566 It's likely that the carrier did indeed have Faery-spec fuel on hand. Remember that this scene was because Lt. Fukai and Major Booker were coming back to Earth as part of a scheduled engine test. That would require the Faery Air Force to coordinate with the United Nations authorities to set it up in advance.
It's scary to know that real life F-22 engine power outstrips that of Yukikaze. The original novel which this anime was based on was released in 1984 and the author had not forseen how advanced fighter planes would become at the time. They had to readjust Yukikaze's engine specs when making this anime
@Kathy Sharp That's pretty much what I'm talking about. The F-22 COULD perform maneuvers and acceleration that would harm its pilot, but is prevented from doing so by various limiters.
@@autofox1744 It is not the acceleration of the engine that is hurting the pilot, in fact, the thrust weight ratio is only 1.08, so the maximum acceleration in straight horizontal flight would push the pilot back only by 1.08 G. Acceleration by the engines is not limited.
Every time seeing this scene I can't help to be moved by such an elegant and beautiful fairy dancing in the air. All the detailed features on small parts movement on the jet makes it so attractive.
Does anyone else kinda think 6th gen fighter planes are going to resemble Yukikaze? It's still a manned plane but it has a semi-sentient AI on board that allows it to excel at data collection and control drones for combat operations. I also note that the aircraft in this show have pretty much no stealth properties, and we seem to be seeing that stealth fighters are way too expensive and impractical. The F-22, F-35, T-50, J-20, and J-31 all have major shortcomings, mostly in terms of cost or underpowered engines. The standard Sylphids that the FAF uses more resemble 4.5 gen aircraft, even. This is ironic, considering that the original novel for Yukikaze was written in the 1980s and yet the author, Chohei Kambayashi, painted a surprisingly accurate picture of the future of aerial warfare.
+AICW Kambayashi graduated from Nagaoka National College of Technology. I will not be surprised if he is accurate in what he describes in this sci-fi anime. Besides, this short anime series is based on his later work published in 2002, which is Sentō Yōsei Yukikaze . For so many years, Kambayashi should have updated the technology described in his sci-fi novel. Anyway, enjoy! xD
+Kyo Chan You seem to know a lot about this franchise and the author. I know Sentō Yōsei Yukikaze was an updated version of the original 1984 novel. Have you read the third book, Unbroken Arrow? What is Kambayashi working on nowadays?
+Verkili Honestly, all the information that I know is from Wikipedia (English and Japanese). I also never read any of his novels even I have been an air force technician (not in the U.S.) for seven years. From Goggle, I cannot find any personal blogs related to Kambayashi. I can only hope that there will be some good animation production teams willing to turn his novels into animation.
+Verkili My native language is Chinese. Modern Japanese language often has Kanji in writing. Most the Kranji characters are very close to Chinese characters. That gives me a good understanding in most of the simple Japanese passages.
The biggest surprise for me was when the plane dropped off the side of the carrier and came back up hovering vertically in midair. Three words: Out. Of. Sight.
Yeah, it's almost implied that all three of them were in agreement to mess with the earthlings. The blipping of the plane wasn't a standard warning alerting them that they were about to fall off the carrier. If anyone pays attention to the different sounds Yuki makes, that one's usually just an info message. It probably said something along the lines of "Ready for vertical hold". I really wish the third book was translated already...
Absolutely marvelous. Desite its age this anime has so much detail. Makes me wonder how good a remake of it would be in the current era. Or the prospect of seeing a Ace Combat anime series.
Kamikaze ejected its drop tanks before entering ram air mode. Those are fuel tanks that can be discarded when no longer needed cause they will cause excess drag and lower the net's aerodynamic profile
I love this scene and the final battle in the next episode. Also the villains JAM are very weird and mysterious, looking like they are in constant vibration mode. It is interesting and kept mysterious.
@@AlexSDU Older than that. The Yukikaze stories started getting published in 1979 in Hayakawa's SF Magazine. The 1984 novel was a collection of 7 of the stories.

Or it's just that sci-fi creators tend not to have a sense of scale. ;)

It's scary to know that real life F-22 engine power outstrips that of Yukikaze. The original novel which this anime was based on was released in 1984 and the author had not forseen how advanced fighter planes would become at the time. They had to readjust Yukikaze's engine specs when making this anime
The scary thing is, the F-22's performance is limited to what it is only because that's what the pilot can *survive*.
@Kathy Sharp That's pretty much what I'm talking about. The F-22 COULD perform maneuvers and acceleration that would harm its pilot, but is prevented from doing so by various limiters.
@@autofox1744 And not only the Raptor.
Pratically every fighter of the last 20 years are limited to +9 G.
@@gufo_tave Yup! We're nearing the limits of what manned aircraft can do.
@@autofox1744 It is not the acceleration of the engine that is hurting the pilot, in fact, the thrust weight ratio is only 1.08, so the maximum acceleration in straight horizontal flight would push the pilot back only by 1.08 G. Acceleration by the engines is not limited.
Yukikaze predicted hyper sonic anti ship missiles

I see. Are you able to read Japanese?
+Verkili My native language is Chinese. Modern Japanese language often has Kanji in writing. Most the Kranji characters are very close to Chinese characters. That gives me a good understanding in most of the simple Japanese passages.

The biggest surprise for me was when the plane dropped off the side of the carrier and came back up hovering vertically in midair. Three words: Out. Of. Sight.
What a showoff.
They even walked the plane.
I'm pretty sure the decision to perform this stunt was made by the onboard AI who had a personality.

Closest thing we can get to a "All you need is kill" anime adaptation.
Yukikazi is far older than that one.
"All you need is kill" was published in 2004, but Sentou Yousei Yukikaze was published in 1984.
@@AlexSDU Older than that. The Yukikaze stories started getting published in 1979 in Hayakawa's SF Magazine. The 1984 novel was a collection of 7 of the stories.
