Hard to believe that all the guests on this particular show are gone. Vassar, John and Tony….. I’m sooo thankful I was able to see them live through the years.
This remains one of the stringed-instruments' grandest albums ever. Finding him in the early '70s playing clubs with Vassar remains a treasured memory. Then finding him 15 years later on his riverboat.
My mom and her brother and sister sang at Renfro Valley to encores back in the early 50's. Country music is in my bones, as is bluegrass. Love this video.
I had the album for many years and just thought how ridiculous it would be to have a "steam powered aereoplane". Just think of it: a huge boiler, feeding it wood and a big fire to boil all that water. Sitting in a deck chair high up over Kansas City. A special brand of crazy humor from John Hartford - sure love him still! Bill Randolph 6-50....
Saw John twice in concert. A virtuoso on guitar, banjo and fiddle, and even played a song on his head. Of all the shows I've seen, no one was more entertaining. Love the guy.
I was able to all of these guys, and many more bluegrass giants many times at Mole Lake Wisconsin through the 80’s. John Hartford was always the best. Much loved by that crowd and me, to this day.
Funny how taste works. John Hartford wrote my two favorite songs. This is one of them. And I love and own the banjo he designed. It is the perfect sound and perfect visual creation, the perfect mix of elaboration ans simplicity. But I can't stand the bowler hat, red tie and ridiculous shoes. I'll take the whole package. Gotta love the guy. But if I could pick and choose, I'd do so.

The most popular of the clips on American Music Shop. May the skies be kind to you boys.

brilliant
It's not often you see so much talent assembled on one stage. These guys are the best of the best of the best...
This is so excellent. What a band. What a song.

What a stage-full of talent! Great to hear this! Wish I could see John one more time.
I'll second that! John was a great one and to be with all those virtuoso's too, gads
I saw Jerry Douglas in that crowd on Dobro too!
Is that Edgar Meyer on bass fiddle?
@@marknicholas7187 Not 100% sure, but I think that's the late great Roy Huskey, Jr.
@@selmer862 I looked up a photo of Roy Huskey, Jr, and this video is a bit blurry, but I have to think you're right, buddy. Thanks! :-)
Holy smokes! Thanks for the upload Mark!
Jerry Douglas looking like he just finished “On the Road” and is gonna go smoke his first cigarette.
Dang this performance is something to behold.
Just noticed in the credits they had Mark featured on fiddle, and no mention of Vassar. Believe it was Mark on mandolin.
You are correct, sir.
That was a G.O.A.T band right there
It's just (and equally as good) as the best Dixieland swing where many soloists come together for a joyful harmony!
These guys still Amaze me , after all these years!
Classic. This was a little different with a piano and drums. A once in a lifetime sound. Thanks for sharing.
What an awsome show,
Thanks for sharing these treasures
I just love this song so much, always have. Thank you for posting it.

Wow!!
Now that's a Band !
great!!
Talent runs deep in Bluegrass music.
Look at Jerry Douglass !
He's like, 12 !
It's what makes time travel possible - the 'flux' capacitor.
Talk about an all star band Good god
Come on!
Oh, Yeah ! ~
Probably the most chops on this stage...
Mark O'Connor's musical humility is humbling.
Plus, TR is a C.G.P.
Is CGP some sort of abbreviation for "amazing?"
Certified Guitar Player
turn it up!!!!!!!!
This must be how you get to heaven.
Ar E O Speedwagon!
Nothing like a bunch of strings getting it together
When the credits roll there's no mention of Vassar. Weird.
Just members of the "band"; you are right. Should include introduction splice to cover that maybe?
This video has 26,887 views as I'm commenting. At least 10,000 of them are mine.
Does anyone know when this was recorded?
1990 /`
Dang IT, if I click the like button again it just goes off. I want it to get bigger.

Is that Mark Oconner in on the mandolin?
