Basic IFR & Auto Pilot on the G1000 GPS | Microsoft Flight Simulator | Cessna 172

- Now that we've had coffee in Flagstaff after a VFR flight in the Cessna 152, let's fly back to Sedona on an IFR flight plan using the G1000 GPS in a Cessna 172. This tutorial summarizes the important things into one video so you can start flying an IFR route with a GPS approach right away. I also covered the main things to know to start using the G1000 Auto Pilot comfortably. The Cessna 172 is the most sold and owned aircraft in the world and it's a really great airplane to get to know. There's some "bonus" material in here as well like flight planning, how to know what altitude to fly at, and how to use the mixture. Let me know if you have any questions, enjoy the flight, and thanks always for your support!
Notes: On my final approach I was approaching a little fast (on purpose) but the recommended approach speed in a C172 SP is closer to 65 knots. Also, you only want "the most engine rpm's" from the mixture setting during takeoff and landing. For cruising, in many airplanes, you want the lowest operational rpm to decrease wear on the engine, and increase your fuel economy. I messed up the terminology for the "localizer" as well. There is no ILS at this runway, so the vertical and horizontal guidance you receive is actually GPS data.

Remember, if you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is ... unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back ... then they get bigger again.
Or unless you are upside down already when you remember this quote :D
@@henrydot6898 good one :))
Murphy’s Law, no matter what you do with the stick if you keep doing it, eventually the houses get bigger. Murphy’s corollary eventually you have to land!
@@jfbaze2001 lol. Unless you go to Mars ... I guess?
@@BradySkye Murphy's Law definitely hit the gang hard on Mars
Holy cow, this is one of the most detailed tutorials of MSFS out there! thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Some of the details though...I mean, if were working through ifr, we probably know the basics like autopilot. The ifr handbook clearly says, if you don't already know the plane, end now and go to that lesson first. (No actually handbook, but common sense.)
Still, nice to see an ifr tutorial that uses the plane we're most likely to practice with, and not an Airbus or other airliner.
UA-cam should be ashamed of themselves in how they pay content creators.
@@icecold9511 I’d like to see an online mfs2020 educational flight database with step by step info for noobs like me. Free website...
What? Why are some vir’s not working?😊
watching this AGAIN a few months later. it is THAT helpful and a good reminder. thanks again
Just finished this right after your same VFR video. What a great concept. Seeing the exact same flight from both techniques is so beneficial. Much appreciated.
Thanks Jordon! Glad you liked the idea and this was helpful. Keep in touch my friend.
I appreciate the info this was exactly what I was missing. Been learning the systems on my own but this helped cover the other buttons and knobs that I had no idea what to do with. I'll look out for more of these. Gotta practice what I just learned before I'll know what to ask for next.
Good to hear that Daniel! Definitely let me know if you have any questions. Happy flying man.
That's all about a Good Teacher should be !!!
Realizing the difficulties that students will encounter in the subject to teatch and know afterwards exactly, how schould be the the easiest way to explain it to them.
Not a word more... not a word less.
Thats the best IFR Tutor for the MSFS G1000, that I found hear on UA-cam !!!
Thank You Brady Very Much !!!!!
Thanks for the great tutorial. I'm trying to teach myself the G1000 and this helped alot.
This is the best tutorial I've seen for tje 172. Great info and easy to follow. You've explained everything simply. Thank you.
The approaches for Sedona the nav points were different for me 3 years later but because you explained it so well in this video, I was able to do it anyways. Great tutorial, thanks.
I watched this video and it cleared up so many questions I had regarding the autopilot, especially how to put the autopilot in GPS mode so it will track your flight plan. Now I can enjoy flying again......thank you!
I finally found a good tutorial for flight planning and flying with the G1000. Thank you
So I’m a beginner as of yesterday to flight sims. I dove in hard and bought the premium deluxe game of the year edition along with the thrustmaster hotas 1 flight stick and thruster combo( no pedals yet). I’ve been practicing with analog instruments just trying to master those first but after watching this video which was by far the best explained video I’ve seen, now I want to step up my game. Thank you for explaining this in your video. I’m still learning all the aviation terminology. So far I’ve had a blast with this game. Y favorite so far is the icon a5, single rear prop that can land in water or on land. Can’t wait for the gliders in august I believe.
Great tutorial. Answered some lingering questions that I was not sure of from my own fumbling trials and errors. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful Paul! Cheers and happy flying : )
It was awesome thank you man. It was better than actual ifr flight tutorials on UA-cam:)
Wow, that approach on runway three is amazing. I’ve landed in Sedona. Probably 50 times most of the time runway three because it’s uphill. I can’t believe how realistic that looks now I want to go buy a PC and hook up lights him. Last time I flew flight simulator was probably 1998
Hi, just wanted to say that watched many you tubes on this specific topic and this one is very very good....Thank you
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Very nice explained. It would be amazing to find this kind of videos for every single MSFS2020 aircraft.
Thanks Jaime! I don't think I'll do every aircraft because there's a lot I really don't care for right now lol but as more aircraft I appreciate come out, I will keep covering more. Join a live stream sometime! They can be pretty educational as well.
Great Job explaining. Starting my IFR and trying to fly a bunch of them on MSFS2020 and this was a big help. Feel like I'm starting ground school all over!! lol
Have to say this channel is the most helpful channel for MFS2020 without a doubt, you learn so much from this, im a private pilot and i was looking to learn at least how to use the AP on the g1000 and just a couple seconds in the channel and ive learn so much not only about the g1000 but other things Love the channel; New subscriber!
Hey Emmanuel, I know it's been 5 months since this comment but I found it now haha. Thanks so much for your feedback and support! Happy flying :D
Thankyou for creating this and such generosity in teaching learners
You're very welcome Andrew! Glad it was helpful for ya.
Incredibly useful information, particularly the instructions on how to use the autopilot. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for stoppin' by Matthew.
Super-helpful, thank you. Glad I found your channel.
Phenomenal video. Thank you for putting this together.
WOW! Great video, cant believe how much you taught me in a short 30 minute tutorial! Liked and subbed
this was the best information so far thanks helped alot
Thanks for this video. I'm about to start my instrument training and it will also be my first time extensively using G1000s. Trying to use flight sim to get the hang of them lol.
Got this on Xbox series x allot on the soft keys not working yet but learning so much from your videos. Keep them coming thanks m8 !!👍
I have watched quite a few videos on this subject but yours is the best to so far, thank you.
Awesome! Thanks : )
@@BradySkye So pleased I have plotted and completed two autopilot flights now thanks to you :-)
there's so much to learn !
Just getting into flight sim. Thanks for this man!
Thank you so much, this video was amazing and so helpful! Also you greased the landing!!
Great tutorial. When adjusting mixture, the key indicator is Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) which is on the G1000 in this plane. If you don't have EGT, lean it until engine starts to lose power, then add mixture towards rich so that engine runs smooth. In real life, you don't want to be too lean, which will damage the engine.
Thanks for the info Brian! Glad you stopped by : )
learned a lot, thanks, very good explanations
Hey this is great, just the kind of content I'm interested in. I like the nitty gritty of VFR and IFR flying. Hope to see more from you!
Awesome Peter, thanks so much!
This is the first helpful video I've found - thank you!
Awesome! Happy to hear that. Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I should do more.
Dude awesome video! Just what I was looking for. Liked and subbed :)

Great!!! Thanks!
Hello from France, and thks for this cool tuto :)
Thank you Im new into this game and you tutorials give me all the mapping controls etc keep it up Brady
Bro yes yss yes thank u love u! Amazing tutorial amazing!
Amazing, thank you! I was hoping the flight school in the sim would be more extensive, I feel what they teach you is really basics of the basics, if that.
Yeah they pretty much teach you how to not fall out of the aircraft, but that's it :), figuratively speaking.
Excellent tutorial, thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Excellent overview. Thanks for this. I'm still a noob and its a lot to absorb
Thanks! Let me know what you're struggling with. Perhaps I should make some more basic tutorials : ) I know there's sooo much information to absorb when you first start flying. Watch that first VFR video and just practice flying VFR in a Cessna 152. Might be good to tackle that airplane and VFR only at first.
@@BradySkye I think lot of people can use the autopilot now on these kinds of planes. But very basic ILS (reading the chart, getting the NAV1/2 setup right) is enough for most of us. But it took me ages to figure out. Now i can use that, but it's hard. Most of the tuts are like 45 minutes, u dont understand anything anymore after 5 minutes :D
superb
Thank you for this
The G1000 is every beginners favorite starter plane. This plane has taught me how to fly better. Every game session I would turn off at least one of the auto pilot controls just to get a feel for how a plane moves especially during bad weather. I can now fly and safely land planes without auto pilot. The hard part for me is using the brakes without tipping some of the planes over. I play on xbox so the controls are still hard to use.
Crystal clear, thanks so much, liked and subbed for more!
Awesome, thank you!
Very well done. I can have my 10 yr old watch it and she would be a good co pilot after that video brah. Great job!
Thanks for this!
Good tutorial, thanks.
Very much appreciated!
Great explanation, thanks.
thank you this is very clear explanation ,and great tutorial easy to follow your words, because some they talk very fast not easy to follow.
Great edit. Thanks. 👍🏽
Thank you too!
this was great thanks!
Cool👍
Thanks for the tutorial✌️
My pleasure 😊
Thank you for this tutorial it is like an extension for the tutorials from MFS I really enjoyed it, in the end, I have had to adjust the weather for me to be able to land haha but great. I was trying to land using the localizer but I was not able, anyway great way to teach and make it easier for us! (If you happen to know how can I re playing my landings, I will really appreaciate it)
Amazing tutorial, been slowly learning. I work at Cirrus Aircraft and they have a program to help with getting your private license. So using the simulator to slowly get into it more.
Thanks a lot!
Very helpful. Thank you.
You're welcome Peter! Thanks for tagging along.
Ayo this Intro go hard bro
Great tutorial, given the fact you cover quite a lot of ground in just 30mins. Well done !
Just a few additional notes ;
- When you do GPS approaches, you don't use ILS because like at Sedona there isn't one, so there is no real (ILS) localizer. The vertical and lateral guidance comes from the GPS database installed in the aircraft and GPS navigation. So it is better to say the GPS provides vertical and lateral guidance and with GPS approach you will see magenta CDI indications. For ILS - based on ground-based system - you need an ILS freqency to be tuned in, the CDI set to LOC and if all set properly you will see green CDI guidance.
- When using the autopilot, it is recommended to use FLC (flight level change) for climbs and VS (vertical speed) for decents. Main reason is that as you climb, the performance will detoriate (less engine power). If you have selected VS then the aircraft will gradually pitch up the nose more and more, trying to maintain that vertical speed figure (as instructed). However, as you climb the speed will detoriate, and there is a risk that the speed will become too low and you stall the airplane. This should be avoided, also because the pilot might be surprised (not understanding why the stall is happening). Therefore, alsways use FLC for climbs and VS for descents.
Hope this nice tutorial inspires people to learn more about the many nice Garmin G1000 features.
Good notes! I appreciate you chiming in on everything! There are so many approach functions and methods, it can certainly get confusing. Wish I could edit the video lol but oh well. Thanks Eugene.
Great Video. Thanks.
Thanks for joining the flight Jake!

Thanks for this, well done. I just got MSFS2020 and completely new to flying . I'm actually using OpenAir to play as i need like career stuff to motivate me and have this G1000 and trying to learn everything i can about how to fly properly and understand all the controls/instruments etc. But i'm basically learning from scratch so all this is super helpful. Thanks.
Great to hear that you're finding this helpful. I agree the career mode plugins are great. I'll be deciding on one those soon. I see that most people are using FSEconomy for career mode right now.
@@BradySkye FSEconomy is free, but you can't sign up right now and seems to have frequent outages. OpenAir is subscription but i keep seeing countless people who played FSEconomy then finally tried OpenAir and found it well worth it. OpenAir UI is great and seems easier to use,, and i can actually use it. Maybe in future i'll try FSEconomy once they work out the server issues and i can actually sign up.
@@zengrath Oh nice! I'll check out OpenAir.

That's awesome! Go get that license. 👏🏽
Very good tutorial, now I have some idea how this works : ) Thank you very much for this. I have a few more requests: 1) how to use NAV indicators on a Cessna 152? 2) How to land an airplane in the dark when you (hardly) can't see the runway? 3) How to use VOR on an airplane? If you could do these tutorials that would be awesome!
Great to hear that! Thanks man. Are you talking about how to use the Directional Gyro on the Cessna 152 / the heading indicator?
@@BradySkye No, I mean the VOR radial instruments (OBS button) next to the right from ALT display and Vertical Speed display. Sorry for my mistake...
DM D Ahhh gotcha okay cool. I'll see what I can do : )
Thanks!
Thank you very much. I saw the Garmina systems back in the 2000, in "Popular Mechanics, Garmin Glascockpit. The terrain rendering is astonishing as the rest of the system. I am a Microsoft Flight Simulator enthusiast, Thanks again from Cluj Napoca Trasilvania Romania!
Thank you for this video! I was planning on getting into VATSIM and FSEconomy but I still barely knew how to fly the actual plan I wanted to fly! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! VATSIM is great. Just go wherever controllers are located. You never really know when they'll be on. Perhaps there is some kind of schedule out there. Haven't looked into it. But yeah .. VATSIM is a lot of fun.
Someone just informed there's software called VATSPY to find controllers that are on. Check it out when you get a chance.
@@BradySkye Yep! I've heard about it when I was watching some videos to learn some more about VATSIM! But thank ya!
super helpful
Glad to hear that! Thanks for the feedback.
Started out “Basic IFR & Autopilot...” but you started to expand and show everything on the menus and to me (Newbie) it got confusing. Wish you had stuck to the basic plan from start to finish. But thank you for an excellent video. I will return to it once I become more accustomed to the basic AP and NAV flight modes.
a "best practice" is to always climb with FLC (flight level change) and climb via an airspeed - this mode has built in stall protection. VS is good for decent, but will stall the airplane if left unchecked, trying to maintain whatever climb rate you chose.
Agreed! I learned this after the fact. Thanks for chiming in Tyler.
You stated you felt it a bit turbulent on short final, don't forget you added 2 notches of flaps while still a little bit high and you nosed dived plane a bit to drop 500ft asap. Plus you turned off wind display to know direction and wind speed that could be playing a number here. Great video overall.
can you do a video covering ILS autopilot ? you briefly mentionned how to tunes the frequencies and use VOR navigation, but I'd like more details about how the autopilot also controls the glide slope to the runway. nice video!
I'll make a note of that and try to squeeze an ILS video in yes. I'll probably do one in the TBM 930.
Wow, awesome. Just one tip, when climbing, it is better to use FLC instead of VS, as FLC will guarantee you will not stall. VS is better used in descent. Just a tip! :)
Thanks! Someone else mentioned that as well. Good to know : )
Yes i found it dangerous because if the plane somehow loses speed it well keep pitching up to stay at that climb rate and this well lead to a stall .... and iam not a pilot just a fsx player
Great tutorial! Few things to correct:
The Maltese Cross indicates the FAF (Final Approach Fix).
Above or at 8000/6600, no lower, that’s what the line below indicates.
Thanks for chiming in! The FAF is also where you would start picking up the localizer, correct?
@@BradySkye you should have picked the localizer earlier, that is where most times an ILS has the GS intercept and where you match the center dot on the GS indicator to the altitude on the chart to verify the GS on the ILS is working. Maltese is for Non Pression Approach. Take a look at a Cat II ILS and you will see there is no Maltese cross, you only get the GS intercept point, which is the FAF.
@@AgonxOC Gotcha! Thanks for the feedback.
@@AgonxOC I also saw a few problems with the explanation of Localizer and FAF. On the charts, there is no localizer. Cannot use a localizer if there is nothing there. The Final Approach Fix, (FAF) is there to indicate you are allowed to descend to the airport environment. On a precision approach, you can descend to Decision Height. On a Non-precision approach, you can descend to Minimum Descent Altitude.(MDA)
Brady, thanks for this tutorial, it was great and very informative. Can you perhaps do a tutorial on how to set the camera buttons for inside and outside shots? Thanks
Just now found this question. Sorry for the 10 month delay lol. Planning on doing more flight simulator videos soon. Just re-downloaded it today.
thank you
Hope it helped some! Thanks for flyin' with me.
The menu should work when you call up the flight plan and select a waypoint on your route, select menu, and it will give you the option to activate leg, or cancel flight plan, etc.
Would of like for you to touch up on some key points like decent rate vs distance, for example how many ft/min you want to decent to be at certain altitude, in this case from the 9000 ft to the 6000 and at what distance to start doing it. I think this is a question that many of us would like for you to teach us, as there’s many different options out there from different pilots.
23:08 to know if the VOR are working use the TITS : Tune Identify Test Set
so basically you set your NAV frequency, then you "listen" on the radio if you can hear the morse code (if not, it's out of range or out of service), then test if the CDI points at it and finally set your FD to follow it
Easy to remember
Great job.... you must be an instructor.... if not should be. I learn so much from this video.
Thanks Bruce! That's wonderful to hear. I am not an instructor but happy to help : )
Thank you Brad. I'm not as Ignorant as I was before this. Still Ignorant, just not as much.
You will never be ignorant if always willing to learn.
Please do a video on how to set up multiplayer mode.
TDZE is the Touch Down Zone Elevation, it is on the airport, not elevation within 3000ft. Some of your Approach plate information isn’t correct, but I appreciate the information you put together to understand IFR in MSFS2020. You did provide good information especially around the performance data.
Yeah there's a few things I got wrong.
Great video. Thanks! Whenever I create a flight plan, and put it into Nav mode, the plane just flies straight ahead forever instead of following the GPS track. Any idea why?
Thanks! It’s tough to say what’s going on without seeing a screenshot or video of what you are seeing : /
When setting the altitudes (9000 vs 9500/East/West) in the altitude plan I bet that you can drag the "dot" downwards to adjust the height that you want? I have not tried this yet, but I will!
Thanks for the informative videos! :)
Let me know if it works! And you're very welcome. My pleasure.

Great quality video WITH CHAPTERS! 👏 I'm considering FS or X plane for IFR. Are all of the FS panels fully operational for gps and autopilot?
Thanks Jason! I can't speak for all panels being full operational but from what I have tried they are for the most part yes. Some of the airliners may have had quite a bit that's not, but there are updates always coming out and adding more functions to those planes too. GPS and autopilot are fully functional on the planes I've tried. I love the TBM 930.
Question for group- I'm use to using Garmin 500 GPS- and it displays a helpful GREEN ARROW on TOD marker on ILS approach. Does G1000 still display those green arrows or is it hidden feature or no longer being used or displayed?
to confirm VOR is working you turn on the audio of the VOR and listen for the morse code letters for that VOR station - was the only way to confirm prior to GPS 1000
Correct. You would hear the Morse code for that station's 3-letter identifier.
The hard left turn is sort of realisting because IRL the torque generated from the propeller can cause the aircraft to streer left. MSFS definitely exagerates it though.
if you want all the charts and overlays and you have an iPad or tablet you can Google FltPln Go. it is free and you can connect it to MSFS so you show up on the map
If I want to plan a flight in Europe, where can I get airports information and charts for instrument approach procedures, departure procedures etc. Thank you!!!!! Very good tutorial!!
How did you know to set the NAV receiver frequency to 113.85? And do I need to do that if I’m using gps mode or is that only for VOR mode?
