It’s very refreshing to see a blog showing what “real life” looks like. Houses are meant to be lived in, and Work rooms are meant to be worked in...they aren’t tidy and beautiful 100% of the time, especially with a busy schedule!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Evee - I'm glad you appreciate my honesty!! I'm still trying to do my best to keep it tidy, but it has lapsed a bit!
Isn’t it a great feeling when u look at what you’ve organised?! So tidy compared to before. The positive energy u get when it’s done is amazing 😜
It is so nice now it's done!
You are not alone ... it’s refreshing to see a real clean with me ...thank you
You are so welcome Shelley. (And there's another one of these videos coming soon because it all got out of hand again!!) :)
i am so grateful to find this today. i call my sewing room/family closet and make the joke that it resembles my mental state. i was in here for 10.5 hours yesterday and today i’m dreading starting and all i have left is to go through 8 bins of fabric. lord help me today completely rearranged and useful now
Yay! Well done on your sort-out as well! It's so nice to have everything organised, but so difficult to keep it that way! Haha!
Oh Helen, I am so happy I found you. I praise you for your bravery in showing your disorganised space, I actually thought it was my room, it looked so similar to my organised chaos room. I talk about clearing up, I mull it over in my head and imagine where everything will go. Then I fall asleep and in the morning the room is as I left it. Now you have inspired me to attempt a clear up, wish me luck and thank you for your tips.
Hi Gail! Haha! Yes I suppose it is brave, I do sometimes get criticism from people who think I should live a tidier life! Unfortunately I can't seem to keep it tidy for very long and it needs doing again! Good luck with your attempt at tidying your room; it does feel good when its done!
Its crazy that I am sat watching this because last night you were in my dream and I was showing you my room that you had inspired me to transform. We had a good giggle and were going through all these cool things I somehow owned, you said to me I didnt mean to make you clean your room and I said no way you inspired me to do it. And here we are with another inspirational video! Your lovely Helen I adore your beautiful honest approach to life and it is such a joy to watch your channel grow and grow as is so deserved, lots of love xxxx
Lol. That is hilarious Claire! Maybe you instinctively knew it was about time I tidied up my sewing room and showed it to everyone!! So funny!
And thank you very much :) xxx
this was immensely satisfying to watch you sort so much of your stash. well done!!
Yay, thank you!
Love the keeping it real approach sometimes I watch these and think how do you make stuff without making mess lol
Haha! Thank you! My floor quickly gets covered again whenever I make something!
Hello Dear;
How Awesomely courageous you are. Thank you for your inspiration for others. Congratulations!!!
Thank you so much, what a lovely comment. :)
Love all the really colourful fabrics.
Me too! I'm currently making a purple and green dress!
You don't need more space or anything else, you need to focus on what is important and you really need it and a few shelves will help alot Look at the fabrics if you have multiple scraps. Donate it to each other or Keep it somewhere else over this room and when you need it, bring what you need from it. You also have many notebooks. Look at what is important and not old and keep it, and the rest get it out, as well as antiques and accessories, and other things. You will be surprised by the space that will appear and from the new focus in which you improve. Keep the place simple. As much as possible, anything that does not help you in your work or not necessarily keep it away or donate it
Note 2. I love your beautiful boxed and bags.
Thank you!
Hi Helen!
Like you, I try to organize by color. It's so much easier to use fabric when I can see what I've got! You are especially courageous in the projects you undertake - this one included - this was a daunting task, certainly. I can't wait to see what you create in your sewing room now - and I'd love a closer look at the Victorian jacket.
You have access to more antique and vintage clothing - even the job lots available to me in Canada through eBay are nothing like the haul you unpacked in a video - so it's interesting to check in with you and see what you're doing. As always - thanks for sharing!
I LOVE organising things by colour - I was one of those kids that would sit for hours trying different ways to arrange my pencil tin!! There's a new sewing video coming soon with a fairytale dress. :) I'm sorry, I sold the Victorian jacket last week - although you can still see the photos in the 'Sold items' section on my Etsy shop; and there's a gorgeous velvet Victorian jacket on there too if you'd like a look. I've got the next few months planned out with my next sewing projects, but after that, I could make a video showing all the antique pieces I have, and get to work on the ones I'd like to use or alter.
Thanks Barbara :)

Thanks Helen - I just had a look at the jacket - just lovely. How good of you to provide so many excellent photos including one of the lining. (Compliments to Chris on his work as well.)
First...good job now honestly if you had storage bins it would look a lot more tidy but honestly this was a great improvement ...and I don't know about where you live but here they have sewing groups who would be glad to receive scraps for quilting....This was great to watch don't let it overwhelm you just keep doing corner by corner...clear plastic storage bins will be your friend IJS👍✌💛💙💛💙
Thank you! I prefer having the fabric on shelves where I can see it all clearly and get things out easily. I have storage boxes in another room with clothes for using their fabric, and I find any organisation of them gets messed up as you go rummaging to the bottom for what you want!
This is so satisfying
Oh good!
i started to tidy my sewing room today and started by emptying a cupboard and when i looked at all the stuff i had put on the floor from the cupboard i just got totally overwhelmed by it and had to come out. this evening i am watching your video and i could feel myself getting very anxious. my one consolation is that i have no where near as much as you do so i should be able to bite the bullet and crake on with it tomorrow.
Good luck Hazel! Little bit by little bit and will be finished before you know it!
Chris needs to make a whole wall shelving unit for u helen 😊
You have a great sewing room
Thank you. I do love it. :)
My sewing room be looking like this before and after a con. I throw all my cosplays and stuff I bought at the con in my sewing room. But I do clean it later, because I can't sew in a messy room. It's about to look like this soon...😁
Haha! Have fun at the cosplay con :)
I recycle a lot out of charity shop items but I give a lot of tiny scraps of fabric to childcare pre school places for kiddies to cut up and make things with. The staff are always too happy to take the bags of me 😊
That's a really nice idea, I bet they have loads of fun with it!
I understand lol. I can relate because us
Creative people are the messiest people , with good intentions though 🤪😊
Yeah I agree, I think creative people do tend to be messier! And always with good intentions!
My mom’s room/house looks just like that.
I’m going to show my husband this video so he won’t think I have heaps of fabric scraps lol
Haha! Glad to be of help!
Haha is that your sewing room or mine . I’ve got stuff everywhere and yes I use mine as a Xmas dumping room too. My wardrobe had shelve in it with materials all sorted, but I crammed too much fabrics in it , it broke the pins and all the shelves fell down so I’ve now mended the shelves with 1 inch wooden battens under each shelf. Now I’ve got a monumental job now of putting it all back in an organised way. All shelves are labelled and each fabric is in a clear plastic bag and all labelled. My trouble is, I’m a fabric Hollic , I see it and have to buy it. I’ve got far too much fabric and I could never use it all in my life time . Great isn’t it 🤣🤣
Oh my goodness, yes! I'm not sure I'm ever going to get through my fabric either! Good luck with organising the shelves - it'll probably be quite fun because you get to see and touch all the fabric again!
Your room is pretty overwhelming with fabric etc but I’m a firm believer that to be creative you workroom has to be messy ...when I have a tidy work room I get nothing creative done.... well done on you tidy up.
Thank you Ingrid! I'm always torn because I do like a tidy room, but there must be something in me that just wants to make it messy again!
You are a lovely person!!
Aww thank you Lorraine :)
As A person who also has a plethora of notebooks… how I would love to peek in all of yours.
Oh they are lovely aren't they?! I have a playlist all about notebooks and journals if you'd like to see more! ua-cam.com/play/PL6TW74gx8f2je4uig7l4rLaxEpMMEi68-.html
What a mess! Looks like you filmed it at my house. lol
Haha! And it needs doing again now!
I'm new to sewing and like you I tend to refashion used clothes--unlike you I'm not as skilled at making dreamy dresses! Do you have any advice on dress forms? I've been trying to piece the material together then put it on (I only sew for myself) then adjust. It is difficult to get things looking pretty.
Hi Amy, well I bought my mannequins from ebay, but if you got the funds to buy new then I would recommend you do as they seem to break easily; so then you could take it back to the shop for a replacement if that happens. Just check that you buy one that adjusts to be the right size for you. Be aware that the adjustable ones are plastic, and therefore you can stick pins along the fabric cover, but not right into it, which makes it tricky sometimes. So as you're only making clothing for yourself, if you find a polystyrene one in your size (those are usually pretty slim) I would recommend that - much easier to pin to, and no adjustable parts to break!
Hope that helps :)
@@HelenHobden Hi Helen, This does help. I'm being gifted a form for my upcoming birthday, but researching them has been--not confusing exactly-- but I want to get the right one for me so I don't waste my space or money. Your comment about being able to return it because they break easily hit the mark for me. I always try and buy second hand--flea markets, e-bay, etc so there is less waste in this world, but buying new sounds like the right path for me. On to more research--thanks again Helen.
Your room looks similar to what my mom’s would look like.
Haha! I'm sure that's a good thing!
Helen Hobden it’s not far from my own, looks. I am planning on filming my clean up.🙃🦔🦙🐈🐾✂️🧵
Oooh good luck!
You really should have just emptied the room hon, your going around in circles. You have a huge stash of fabrics. Empty room first bag what your not keeping than restock rest. Well done for tackling it all
Thank you!
Ich leide gerade mit den Stoffen! Warum? Irgendwie wird es auch nicht besser um so länger man sich das anschaut!
I have the solution--- you need a lot bigger of space. I understand I moved from a two stall garage made into a studio to a space about the third of the size. Yes, it has husband study that moved in and grand childrens toys and sewing place. It is hard when life moves in our space. And truth be told being clean isn't as important as being creative. But today I am also cleaning. I need a ebay space and guess where it needs to be at this time.
I totally agree - being creative is more important than being clean! It sounds very busy there - good luck with holding onto your space!
Theres a quote from Einstein
"If a cluttered desk means a clutter mind, then what dose an empty desk means" or something like that. I don't remember the exact words
