  • I live in a house full of boys so whenever I get the opportunity to paint with pink, I go ALL IN!!! This antique desk fought me through the restyling process but now its a super sassy little piece of art. It’s painted in a fun pop of summer pink with Behr’s Chalk Decorative Paint in “Pink Mimosa”!
    Products Used in this Video:
    + Fantastic Cleaner
    + Bondo
    + Surf Prep Sander with 100, 220 & 320 grit sandpapers
    USE CODE: KATIESCOTT10 to save 10% www.surfprepsa...?aff=33
    + BIN Primer ( bit.ly/2AUvl3T )
    + 4” Microfiber Roller
    + Easy Mask Tape & Drape ( amzn.to/3iE0b1q )
    + Behr Chalk Decorative Paint in “Pink Mimosa”
    + Rustoleum Chalked Protective Topcoat
    + Gravity Fed HVLP Pneumatic Spray Gun ( amzn.to/3p112eR )
    + Rustoleum Spray Paint Gold ( bit.ly/3fPkF53 )
    + Honeywell Respirator ( amzn.to/2XSvZHL )
    + Drawers lined in wrapping paper from Society6 ( bit.ly/3f5DeC5 )
    + Elmer’s Craft Bond Spray Glue ( amzn.to/3e97RFs )

    I'd say a BUNCH more years! You do such quality work, besides how lovely your designs are. I'm really loving your channel & ALMOST believing that maybe I can follow in your foot steps. Thank you so much for posting. And, btw, I saw some criticisms in another of your flips where people mourned your filling in some grooves on some drawers of a 1950's dresser. They're nuts, IMHO. Lol. I love the way you repurpose, update, & redesign to bring older pieces into this new century. Your sleek, clean lines and sensibility for what's current is spot on. Oh, and the paintable, textured wallpaper you used on those drawers also was very cool! OK, one more thing. I did NOT understand why people use chalk paint instead of latex until I started watching your channel. They probably both have their place, but I can't wait to try some chalk paint. I love the look of it.

    I painted a massive canvas once it was beautiful I'd spent hours dripping paint perfectly down it , it's was huge and ready to go above our fire place , my husband even liked it , 👀 just so you no how nice it was 😂,, anyways fast forward a day later after drying.....
    All my paint drips had come away and curled up back ground bubbled,, I could of cried 😑
    Like you also because of the stupid finish on the canvas before I painted and humidity. I chucked it out down my drive in temper 😂 x

    Do you have to prime wood if you are doing a dark color of chalk paint?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  Рік тому

      It’s still a good idea. Wood tannins can definitely still bleed up through darker colours and you may notice repaired areas are highlighted without a primer to camouflage the texture difference.

So me in my life when a sucker punch comes out of no where and seems to thwart my plan. My most common one is....kids, take this phone away from me before I spike it on the ground like I just caught a touch down pass. Technology and I don’t play together well all the time. Hi Katie,
    I’m watching this from Down Under as we call it....ln New Zealand.
    Loving everything you do and I have a couple of tips for you. My dad was a cabinet maker. Get a candle...(big is good as it covers the distance quicker) and rub the wax thoroughly all along the outsides of the draws and also the runners. This will truly make them slide in and out like butter.
    Works like a charm.
    The other is to help you with spray drift...
    Make a largish oblong that you can hang from the ceiling. Perhaps from pipe, copper pipe, or an old long curtain track and have it on a pulley system. On this oblong hang a couple of large bath tub size shower curtains so that you can pull them around to enclose where you need them. Put some weights in the hems if not already there so they don’t blow about if you should catch a breeze..
    For ease... make yourself a dolly....which is either circular,square or oblong. This is just a flat board which has casters underneath so that you can turn it around as you need to spray. It works wonders in a small space. Remember to sand the edges so you don’t catch your legs or clothing on them.
    No more spray....and you will love it for ever.
    All the best for the future. Your’e doing a fabulous job.
    Julie

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому

      Thanks Julie. If you watch back a bit, you’ll see that I often wax sticky drawers. In this case, that would not have solved the issue.
      Since I’ve been doing this full time for the past 3 years, we have our garage set up in a manor that works for both my husband and I. No small spaces to deal with 😉 (also, when spraying paint, you don’t catch a breeze, you create a little tornado of air with every pull of the trigger so loose plastic would be disastrous)

    Thanks for showing some real challenges. You are amazing and inspire others to do things right with hiccups along the way. I was a single mother for many years and my daughter’s friends would come to our house and say “you live here”? They were impressed, and many of the items in my house were picked up at the curb and refurbished. Now I instilled that recycle mentality in my grown daughter, and she has turned out some beautiful pieces and added fabulous upholstery skills too.

    Beautiful job on the desk. Love the end result. I would note however that the dust Bondo creates when sanding is highly toxic & very damaging to the lungs. For that reason always wear an actual respirator rather than just a face mask. My nephew decided to make upcycling furniture his passion & used Bondo to fill in cracks, scratches, grooves & missing sections for 2 years. He wore standard face masks rather than a rated good respirator but paid a dear price. He damaged his lungs to the point he's now on oxygen.

    • @salvagedbykscott

      Zoe Emiko I wear a respirator with particle and fume filters whenever I’m sanding, spraying paint or working with anything stinky. I’ve mentioned this exact point in several videos.

    Hi Katie, thanks for your videos! I like your honesty and the way you present your work process and result with great care to detail. I upgraded several old walnut chairs and a walnut dining table, all without paint but using natural furniture oil to bring out the original wood grain once more. I also upholstered some of the pieces, and I absolutely adore them now. My next project is my son’s vintage writing desk. I never dared using paint in fear of the surface turning out uneven, but I might want to try it with the desk (my son says he wants neon colors!😱) Do you sand the surface only when you use a paint brush? Lots of love from Switzerland!

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому

      I sand every piece before painting to smooth knicks and dings and give the surface some “tooth” for the paint to hold onto.

    Fantastic job. Question, what would you suggest for the buyer if they live in a humid climate also? Would you suspect the drawers sticking even after complete?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому

      Hi Nena!
      I only sell locally so my clients have the same conditions as me. Once this piece was inside the house (controlled environment) all the drawers worked perfectly again. I wouldn’t have sold it otherwise.
      My guess is that if you were in a usually humid climate your wood furniture would already be adjusted to that.

    I like it a lot! I'm glad to see a regular vid that just painted furniture without the weird stuff. It's so cute!

    What’s the difference between protective top coat and clear wax? Why do some people use the protective top coat at the end and other times use the wax?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  3 роки тому

      Both wax and poly top coat serve the same purpose. They provide a protective barrier between the painted surface and whatever may come in contact with it. My preference is usually poly but wax also works great and in some circumstances can be a little easier to work with.

    Annie Sloane of Annie Sloane chalk paint in UK says chalk paint needs to be painted at normal room temp. Not in a cold garage or in high heat / humidity. The paint will not bond.

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому

      Yes, all paints, chalk or not, preform best when applied in moderate temperatures. I’ve never found temperature to be a factor in bonding. It’s more likely to affect the drying times.

    Im curious why you used chalk paint if you sanded and primed anyway, I thought that was the purpose of chalk paint

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому +1

      A proper chalk painted finish still requires good prep work. I like to use chalk and mineral based paints because they are eco friendly, low-no VOC, and easy to sand for a super smooth finish. They also have much better coverage than other paints and won’t peel over time like latex paints.

    Hi Katie, will you please tell me what size compressor you are using, and what pressure you are spraying at?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому

      I have a 30 gallon tank, which isn’t really big enough. It runs the entire time I’m spraying but is able to keep up and I spray at about 80 psi.

    Beautiful color pink. How did you like working with the Behr chalk paint and would you use it again?

    • @salvagedbykscott
      @salvagedbykscott  4 роки тому

      I’ll probably use it again in a pinch but it wasn’t my favourite. It sanded more like a latex than a chalk paint and was a little more translucent than I’m used to.

    Beautiful job. I'm inspired by watching your process and the way you handled the bubbling veneer situation. I'm also impressed by the staging of your finished pieces - love the way you pull in the hardware colors & keep the look modern and minimal.. Question....does the paint from your sprayer drift to your garage walls and onto the bikes and other things in your garage? I'd like to purchase a sprayer but am concerned about the overspray.

      Not difficult at all. I only use water based products so I just rinse everything with water in the sink when I’m done.
