If you look at Nyjah's back foot, he does not have it in the center of the board; his back foot is counter balancing his front foot that is hanging off. Combine that with tighter trucks and you can remain stable I think. Nyjah also wears a 9 or 9.5 shoe size, so that probably helps him out a bit too.
I ride looser than most people I've ever skated with but I do kickflips like this too, the counterbalance thing works on the loosest of boards, finding your center of balance with this footing is also key.

I went from quitting skating after 5 years because I couldn’t progress and learn kickfips, to coming back after 5 years of not skating and easily learning kickfips in one day because of this video, fkn amazing.
100% you are so right. I'm still learning kickflips and I tend to have that foot positioning but then flick to the side and I get mobbed flips if any. But in one of the last sessions, I guess by accident, I started to get that 'swoosh' feeling of flicking through the board and the board 'going away', rather than my foot leaving the space, knowimean. Actually worked and made it much easier to catch some, too!
I just started getting this, my board pulls to the right and I've figured out how to flick it to the left and get the kickflip to stay centered. Feels great man
I’ve used this foot position for so long and once you understand it, it’s beautiful and you have it 90% kickflips are bread and butter with position you feel the nose it’s hard to explain but you’ll get it.
Naw real shit I have like the highest Ollie's in my skate group and that's all I can do. But I've been taught this way as well and I've tried others but this is the best stance in my opinion
This is the only foot position that works for me but I have trouble balancing even with tightish trucks do you have any tips for balance in this foot position?
Interesting to compare Nyjah his kickflip kick with your kickflip clips in this video. Check out the comparison in position at pop, mid-air and during landing. You will notice Niyah bends a lot more at the knees at all those moments! He his really crouching down during pop, sucks up his knees in mid-air before the catch and bends again after landing to reduce impact. Also notice how straight his whole posture is.
Don't forget a straighter posture during squat has a lot to do with body anatomy. As it is with weightlifting, you can't try to emulate certain postures without adjusting foot position and angle because of differently sized legs - and even then you might not even be able to do it so.
I’m no kickflip pro but my tip would be to just focus on getting a more comfortable front foot position to whatever suits you, but using the same idea of flicking more off the side of the nose instead of the board. It’s hard to get used to at first but also try to only flick using your ankle and nothing else and it’ll be a lot easier to catch it with two feet on the board like nyjah. Having a solid pop and foundation would also help tremendously
Just want to say how much I enjoy your channel. Your videos cover topics I have down pretty good but I just like your insight and seeing you work out the tricks. I look forwards to the next video.
I kickflip almost the same exact way except I I have my front foot on the bottom corner bolt instead of behind it. I use the toe of my shoe to cover the bottom left bolt and flick straight up through the pocket and off the nose instead of off the side. My back foot covers the whole tail to counter balance how off my front foot is. People laugh at me because of my foot position until I kickflip and it’s so clean and then people are amazed on how I can kickflip like that.
I can do high and nice kickflips but i don't have them much consistent, I was looking a video like this to improve my kickflips. Good job dude, congrats from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷✨✨
if you've already got good flick and you get decent height, I wouldn't try this method unless you've got strong ups; you're using less board to slide when popping, so it sacrifices height (unless you catch a lot of the nose on the short flick)
@@peazeralus Yesss you are right! I tought in use these method to jump stairs or gaps, cause the board flips right under my feet, and with my flick most of times it goes too far from me. I will try and see if works better, thanks for the advice 🙏🏼
@@eduardosegato8379 absolutely! gapping out or down is the BEST time to use this method. you're very welcome! anything, anytime for a brother of the board
When I was younger (and lighter) i started doing my kickflips like this and it basically let me be able to kickflip almost everything that I could ollie.
Went out and bout these for me and my daughter for when we want to skate but cant get out to a skate spot you can use these anywhere bc they quite up the board and you dont need much space to use them... pretty awesome.
Nice video, maybe i'll try doing my switch flips like that,i'm still not very consistent at them but i kind of realize the logic of this way of doing kickflips
@@localjoe thanks for replying man,btw ryan decenzo was on the nine club recently so if you have plans about making a fs flip or a fs 360 video you should check him out,he has both of those tricks super good
Wow, now i can kickflip. Been struggling to get a good kickflip for a long time, when I went out and tried this I got it first try. Thanks for the enlightening content
I also noticed Nijahs back foot it's completely on the board. That probably helps him balance his front foot being barley on. Great video! I'm going to try this later!
when you have your front foot that far off the board, you want your back foot to sit the opposite side, same distance. it balances you, pre-pop, and mounts the pressure for a stronger pop as long as you've got most of your weight on your front foot.
i would put a lil comment on the wobbling board: Nyjah does a little hop to adjust his foot positioning ( as some other pros also do it ), it helps with leveling both of your feet "on point" and well-distributed weight on both side of the board. Love your vids man keep it up :D
So, I also tried this, and I found it works so much easier which his specific board shape, you also have to adjust the timing of your flick because you cutting down the amount of time you are sliding your foot
Another great video dude! I am constantly changing my foot position with kickflips, like the speed of the flick you get with this but always feel a bit unsteady as I ride with looser trucks.
I Switch between using the tail or nose with tricks because of the pop. I use the nose when I kickflip because of the pop. Kickflip in any position requires you to manipulate and consciously understand your level out and pop ability.
flicking more edge of the corner will flip faster. If you flip closer to center it will flip slower. You wanna do it where you catch the board with your back foot while your still going up at the peak of the height
so i been doing this way before i knew nyjah did it and i thought i was doing it wrong the whole time because most people put their foot in the middle of the bored and i feel so uncomfortable doing it so now ik that one of the best skaters do it and i feel proud
Dan Corrigan said LvL your Ollie and delay your flick. The problem is you’re kinda going at it the varial flip way where you flick as soon as you pop. Get your pop height up where you consistently land them. Add the delayed flip. Position like Nyjah and flick straight. Love your vids tho. Keep that knee strong.
I love the Nyjah kickflip technique and I like looser trucks, eventually you get used to it, it did wonders to me. But I also like to mix this with the Luan Oliveira's kickflip, he apparently goes almost ninja kick
I skate loose trucks and I kickflip this same way. I also never ride a board under 8.25. I have tried this technique with a skinny board and it sucks, bit with an 8.5, you still have a good 5 or 6 inches of your foot on the board. It works.
Nyjah is flicking UP. with that he can leverage that fast flick and get a long hangtime with high pop. You are flicking DOWN! One can see that most oviously when you flip down the curb. This gives you fast flick but little pop! Also Nyjahs knee extends similar to the jamie foy heelflip hack you explained. This also allows to flick up, late and fast! I think flicking up even needs less energy, but you need good grip!
I heard that he rides his trucks really tight. But what if you put your pop foot a little more on the inside to help counterbalance for all the loose riders.
He flicks forward and up with his leg as he does the ollie motion, so it probably makes it easier to catch with both feet. If you flick down with your leg or even straight your board will go down in the front. Try the upward (the up motion of the board) and forward flick.
I got nyjahs kickflip consistently where eve I put my front foot, heel flip position Ollie position anything cuz no mater where I put my foot I flick out in the same spot all the time that’s the most important thing to remember just flick on that spot I don’t even think about it
it is really good for backside flips. i keep my back foot with all of the pressure on the toe side of the board, and my front with my heel hanging off with all of my pressure on the heal side. the opposing pressure on the tail of the board makes the flick of the front foot really snappy.
this is how i have always done it. my kickflips were always good, but i thought this was a lame way to do them. it feels natural for me so i never bothered to try to change it. i have also never had issues with getting decent pop while hanging off my foot.
Squat more for better/higher kickflips and skating in general. By squatting to 90 degrees you get better tricks. It helped me a lot, tho at start is weird but it's the right way
The tip that no one talks about is what to do with your knees! Watch Tyshawn Jones kickflips and you’ll see what I mean. He almost pops the board behind him while using his back foot to counter balance his front foot hanging off.
I just skate the boards nose as the tail and now my kick flips are insane and look slomo and it's nothing ground breaking it's just I use my imagination and BOOM! It's really that simple
This is how I do my kickflips and definitely feel where it sometimes wants to varial. I counter pressure with my back foot towards the opposite direction of my front foot while i'm popping to keep it underneath me. I found I have a hard time keeping it under me going off/up things though.
I may have to try a variation of this next skate session. My foot is about halfway across and a few inches down from the bolts, but I need to move my foot further up so I can improve my height. Hopefully I get some good results.
He balances the back foot to counteract the front foot hanging over the board. You didn't do it that is why you find it hard. Look at where he taps his back toe, at the corner of tail of the board. Just an observation, hope it help.
Would you say this technique requires a faster, snappier flick to get it? I'm still in the learning to kickflip territory of things, even when I have landed some.
It’s funny you say “still landing back foot first” like it’s bad. To me there is no way to kickflip that’s more stylish than catching with the back foot then finishing.
I also have weird kickflips when I go off a ramp or anywhere that is a high platform. I have my toes past the bolts so i dont really over flick becuase when i do it the other way i do a double
just a reminder none of you are alone ! God is with you all and he will never leave you . you are loved and accepted by him and that will never change . God bless you all
I'm learning kickflips and have that foot position already, and the flick but i can't land any cuz of my front foot. I get really nice formed kickflips but i can't land em, my board always lands a bit behind my front foot. I tried leaning back a bit and trying to front foot catch but then they just rocket real bad and my balance is off
This is how I do my kickflips but I've been trying to do them with my foot more central on the board. I'm finding I can't do them. My shoe grips too much and the board goes flying off Infront of me.
Oh it's Tuesday buddy. I mean Friday..every day a Friday

it works SO DAMN WELL for gapping down, just not enough height for flatground... unless you're Nyjah and have spring like an NBA rookie
