Hello bbs! I finally finished the 1997 video, lol! What do you guys want to see next? I honestly want to do every year of the 90s now... can't wait for '98 and the arrival of Britney/Xtina/dueling pop stars. Which outfit was your fave?
Safiya is a graduate from Stanford and she has an English degree. You can tell she knows what she is doing and how emotive she is... it makes sense she was also working in theater and writing a lot. She's awesome
cause that's what it is... as someone who was in jr high / high school in the 90s... it's amusing to see the teenagers dressed exactly how I was dressed lol
@@brn2863 Yeah, I remember my mom laughing one day while dropping me off at middle school, about seeing people wearing bell bottoms and platform shoes again just like they had in the '70's.
I can relate!! I literally splurged my knowledge on hippie culture from her 1967 video in our crafts subject and I corrected my teacher in science for saying "haley bopp" instead of "hale bopp" OOPS
i was a teen in 97 you got most of it right the only thing is your pants were hiked up way to high. it was all about the low rise and showing off your calvin klein underwear.
Honestly, Saf probably didn't wear it that way for "UA-cam Reasons" or some such thing. We can't go around seeing Saf's underwear just because it was "in".
@@jaidenkendall266 really ? We see so much more on the rest of UA-cam without age restrictions that I don't think it's a problem... recently I signaled a video saying "relaxation" where there was a girl on transparent lingerie saying she wanted to "blow you dry dirty baby", and UA-cam answered saying that it was not a problem, so... the wide elastic of a calvin klein underwear is really nothing compared to that.
I was 19 in '97 and can say that the 80's were the time of high rise noisy athletic pants and the 90's were low rise. They wouldn't be so low that she couldn't wear them on UA-cam, but I think they might be hard to find now so maybe that's why they are high... Everything else on the video looked great and was a great homage the the late 90's. I was all about the minimalist look ha!

Same girl same. I was born in the 90s and that is how I thought I would look as a teen. I sadly did not dress like that as the trends changed by the 2000s and 2010s.
I'm actually really mad that I was slightly too young for early 2000s teen trends lol. I'm a LATE nineties child, so I literally just became a teen as those early 2000s trends died off. I did finally get my chokers though, cause those finally became cool again :P
I was 17 in 1997 and would say this was pretty spot on. Late 90's is definitely back. I was walking through Primark this past weekend and every other rack I was like "wore that", "had something like that", "remember that sort of fabric". Also the frosted makeup was on point. Icy blues and silvers all the way. I even had a frosted blue lipstick that my mum said made me look like I had a heart condition!
OHMYGOD *YES* I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Transparent parts of clothing? The Sims. Is. OBSESSED. With this. It's even all over Sims 4! Basegame, even.

@@mai_hai2274 I'm a year late, but you've cLEARLY never been to any elementary/junior school in 2018/2019 if you don't see a sh!t ton of VSCO girls at school. It's awesome how she teaches you things while she entertains you with the style aspect. It's influential and beautiful. Hats off to you Safiya, never stop being amazing!
When she says 1997, all that comes to my mind is Sabrina's looks in Sabrina the Tennage Witch. I love the style on the first seasons of Sabrina, the high waisted pants and skirts, flannels and half sheer half solid color blouses, i just loved 'em and if i dressed like the show today no one would noticed.

I never really thought that 1997 was long ago - but here I am, a 20-year-old uni student born in that year. When you think about it, the first people born in the 21st century will be adults soon! How time flies! :0
Cheapmommy Do you remember body glitter? I had a roller tube of it, some of my friends had the glue-stick type body glitter. I can still remember the smell of that stuff.
I really like saf because she really does intensive research for her videos and projects and not just show off her new idea and wear outfits randomly. Maybe because she used to make buzzfeed videos that her vids are now like that too, but I still like her a lot. 👍❤
I was in middle school in 97. Holy cow you freaking nailed it. Guys were sporting jnco jeans and oversized t shirts with namebrands like boss. Also skateboard shoes like airwalks where in.
Fredrick London I was surprised at no vans/airwalks, enormous JNCO jeans, wallet chains, black band t-shirt.... black lipstick, And every bright color of nail polish imaginable.
She should do something really crazy and wear 1700's or 1800's clothing out in public. I think it would be pretty interesting to learn about trends from then. And Saf does a really good job researching in her videos
I remember the dragon print/Chinese symbol trend continuing into the very early 2000's. I was a freshman in high school in the 1999/2000 school year and it was still a thing then (at least in the area I lived in). I had several of those bead bracelets with the Chinese symbols on them too.
I was 16 in 97 and you basically nailed it. Better than other people ive seen who try to mimic the styles from the decade. Also, the last dress was so spot on. You could also have have added a white baby tee under it and out on some docs and you would have hit the grunge look that I loved so much back then.
One thing I will say that was very different in the 90's was eyebrows. I'm lucky my eyebrows survived at all. Over plucking was very much in style. A "History of Eyebrows" video would be cool.
1997 was a big year for me. I was 7, started second grade at a new school, my older brother got married, my older sister gave me a stuffed bunny rabbit for Easter (which I still have), I had my first celebrity crush (Nick Carter) and found out that just because there was a rerun of a show on, it didn't mean that the show was new or still running. Kind of a shocker when you go to the movie theater expecting to see 16 year old Leonardo DiCaprio (Growing Pains) and end up seeing 22 year old Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic). Not surprisingly, I also had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio, but Nick beat him to being my first celebrity crush by 3 months.
But you know what? You could be absolutely killing it in the ramen eating and complaining fields. I believe in you! You go and eat that ramen and complain. And you go do it well.
So much nostalgia!! I was 13 in 1997 and I wore all of this stuff! The tattoo chokers are way in again. Remember the tear-away athletic pants?? Yeah, a kid's pants ripped right off during a game of mat ball at indoor recess in from of half the school. It was epic. We all LOST IT! And the pants were banned the next day. Why no crazy wide JNCOs????
I was 18 in 1997, it was a great time. I was a goth and I wore almost exclusively vintage dresses from the 20's up until the 70's and making plastic skirts and shirts. :) I STILL wear a lot of sheer dresses and plastic/vinyl etc..
wearing an outfit from each time period each day a week (e.g. Monday= '20s, Thursday= '60s, Saturday= '80's or something or maybe I dress like the spice girls for a week
Just Chilin no you dont most teens didnt have mobiles if your mate didnt turn up you just stood outside hmv for 20 mins looking sad. ;) dont wish to live in a tome without phone's we were so bored.
I grew up not using cell phones so idk what your trying to say, I didnt even get my first phone till like 2 years ago so it hasn't really effected me all that much. You know I honestly would prefer to live in a time where people weren't so consumed by their phones. It makes you actually have to interact w people

Rose Buddd True true
Rose Buddd I do agree halfway. Because Liza Koshy is also very original.
Ryan higa is the king tbh!
Rose Buddd i'm gonna have to nominate jenna marbles for that title :P
I was born in 97 so I was contractually obligated to watch this.
Same!
I came here for the not drugz
Same
I honestly wore these as a child well into the 2000's! My hometown is about 10 years behind any and all fashion and always will be 😅
Brooke Lamb girl same
Are you in Ohio
I never really thought that 1997 was long ago - but here I am, a 20-year-old uni student born in that year. When you think about it, the first people born in the 21st century will be adults soon! How time flies! :0
ManaLookie yea I was born in 2000 and I'm gonna be 18 in 3 months :(
born in '99 and just turned 18 haha
Yup! My oldest so was born Nov. 4th of 97..amazing how little time we actually have.
Not Tryin' To Hear You! I was pregnant with my first in '97...makes you feel old doesn't it? 😂😂
K den Truu
When u said Jake Paul was born in 1997, I was like
don’t remind me of that mistake.
I actually had no idea I shared my year of birth with him, I'm not happy about this 🤣
I cant believe 1997 was 20 YEARS AGO LIKE TF ???
Nothing fucks u harder then time :(
angela farra I can't believe I'm 20 I feel like I'm still 14
Girl Rants same i turned 21 in july and i was like "hold up wasnt i 14 like 6 months ago?!" 😂😂
angela farra kit😂😂
Ikr I'm 31 going on 32 where has time gone
I was in middle school in 97. Holy cow you freaking nailed it. Guys were sporting jnco jeans and oversized t shirts with namebrands like boss. Also skateboard shoes like airwalks where in.
Fredrick London I was surprised at no vans/airwalks, enormous JNCO jeans, wallet chains, black band t-shirt.... black lipstick, And every bright color of nail polish imaginable.
Omg, so much nostalgia. I still wear most of this stuff, and now that I've been reminded of it all, I'm going to break out my old butterfly clips. 🦋
“Bras and lingerie were very popular”
Me: .....well not for Rachel
She should do something really crazy and wear 1700's or 1800's clothing out in public. I think it would be pretty interesting to learn about trends from then. And Saf does a really good job researching in her videos
yea it would be interesting!
That would be so cool & interesting to see!
Cupie _ice yessss that would be so fun to watch
Cupie _ice I really do appreciate her dedication and effort, she totally commits and goes all out for her videos!
yaaassss
I love these videos because they make me feel both educated and fashionable
I remember the dragon print/Chinese symbol trend continuing into the very early 2000's. I was a freshman in high school in the 1999/2000 school year and it was still a thing then (at least in the area I lived in). I had several of those bead bracelets with the Chinese symbols on them too.
I was 16 in 97 and you basically nailed it. Better than other people ive seen who try to mimic the styles from the decade. Also, the last dress was so spot on. You could also have have added a white baby tee under it and out on some docs and you would have hit the grunge look that I loved so much back then.
Ppl need to be more like her more she stays out of drama
One thing I will say that was very different in the 90's was eyebrows. I'm lucky my eyebrows survived at all. Over plucking was very much in style. A "History of Eyebrows" video would be cool.
Margaret Murphy yes!
Margaret Murphy lucky! My brows didn't make it through as well! There's still patchy spots 😞
Margaret Murphy yeah! Great idea! I'm so up for the history of eyebrows
Margaret Murphy omg yees
**An "History of Eyebrows"
i'm super into 70s fashion lately so i'd loove to see 70s inspired looks!!
I was 11 years old in 1997...I remember seeing these outfits *EVERYWHERE*
Strange how the kids in their 20s are still dressing like this :)
Wow I feel like the 90's have definitely come back in the last couple of years. A see a lot of these trends all the time. Personally I like it.
Should i be doing homework? Yes. But is this information that i may never use more important? Of course
Angiee G You're learning about the 90's fashion, duhhh.
Is this useless information more important than that useless information? Yes.
CUTE!
The 90's were my teen years graduating in 2000 & you nailed it! I loved that time lol
How are you so awesome? We're literally the same age and here you are, winning at life, and here I am, eating ramen and complaining.
You go, girl x
Atreyi Bhattacharjee #Ramen4TheWin
But you know what? You could be absolutely killing it in the ramen eating and complaining fields. I believe in you! You go and eat that ramen and complain. And you go do it well.
Oh god, the 90's! I remember pale lipstick with dark liner and crazy coloured leather jackets (baby blue, pink...) And giant hoop earrings!
Literally My mom when she was 17 years old
So much nostalgia!!
Same! I think I still have the Delia's catalog.
I was thinking of those too! I feel like her pants in the Natalie Imbruglia look were too tight. We wore some BAGGY pants back then.
I was 15 and I wore all these outfits, too. I loved my delias catalog
I turned 13 that year, too.
Margaret Gardner m
I was 18 in 1997, it was a great time. I was a goth and I wore almost exclusively vintage dresses from the 20's up until the 70's and making plastic skirts and shirts. :) I STILL wear a lot of sheer dresses and plastic/vinyl etc..
The 'I Want it That Way' instrumental got me jamming
wearing an outfit from each time period each day a week (e.g. Monday= '20s, Thursday= '60s, Saturday= '80's or something or maybe I dress like the spice girls for a week
rbpink_._. ++++
rbpink_._. Yes
I love the minimalist makeup on her!
I was a teenager then, and this unlocked so many memories for me. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
Love this, but oh my lord... I was finishing high school in '97!!! I now officially feel ancient!
(And yes, I wore ALL of those!!!!!)
Vicki Breese me too!
Me three! ;)
I LOVE 90s fashion, I was born in 98 and I really wish I got to live through the 90s more
Just Chilin same here 🙁
Just Chilin no you dont most teens didnt have mobiles if your mate didnt turn up you just stood outside hmv for 20 mins looking sad. ;) dont wish to live in a tome without phone's we were so bored.
Stacey Fell nah. Not bored if you loved playing outside all day
Excuse you? Who the fuck are you telling me to fuck off?!
I grew up not using cell phones so idk what your trying to say, I didnt even get my first phone till like 2 years ago so it hasn't really effected me all that much. You know I honestly would prefer to live in a time where people weren't so consumed by their phones. It makes you actually have to interact w people
The first outfit looks like something she would wear everyday
except for the shoes maybe
The 90’s really brought some amazing fashion to the world🥰
