I Dressed Like It Was 1977

  • I styled 3 outfits inspired by the popular fashions of forty years ago! From the polyester pantsuit and ascot-wearing wonder women, to leather-clad punk music fans and disco dancing queens in jumpsuits and metallic accessories, I had a great time pretending it was 1977 and exploring fashion history through one of the most iconic decades - the 70s. Let me know what you think of my ~lookbook~ and if you want to see more of these!
    A huge thanks to Kayley Melissa for rocking out this 70s hair! You can check out her channel here: / @kayleymelissa

    fun fact as to why there were so many leather jackets in punk fashion: it was because a lot of bickergangs and other fashion groups who donned a leather jacket had started to go out of fashion and popularity so it was very easy and cheap to find it in your nearest second hand shop :)

    6:44 they practically had been, i’m a current punk and here’s what i’ve heard from elder punks!! the reason leather and plaid was so common in 70s punk (and grunge, but that isn’t our current focus) is because of the death of greaser subculture. greasers started donating leather jackets, flannels, jeans ect. to thrift stores because they didn’t care about them anymore therefore they were cheap and easily accessible. punk and grunge were subcultures born out of poverty, the people who thrifted before it was cool, many of whom were on the street and needed cheap, warm clothes. this meant the greasers old clothes were perfect!!

  • @puppykat800
    @puppykat800 6 років тому +108

    God number two was such a look. Also if anyone’s curious according to John Lydon (Johnny Rotten, lead singer of the Sex Pistols) in one of his books he actually explained where the safety pin trend started allegedly?? It also ties into the name of the band too because John and Sid worked at a punk fashion boutique of sorts literally named SEX and was run by the girlfriend of Malcom Mclaren (sex pistols manager). She was apparently great at the fashion part of it but was terrible at sewing clothes, but the band members were forced to wear them as a sort of promotion/sponsor deal for the shop at shows, even though they kept falling apart whenever you wore them. So John and other members of the band started keeping safety pins on their person at all times to keep their outfits together onstage, and so it became a fashion trend for punks who thought it looked cool and edgy. The name was also a sort of promotional thing too because they came from SEX, so they were the Sex Pistols ta daaaa. Just thought I’d make a use of this useless information and put it on the internet for maybe one person to come across.
