Constant Land Uplift and Suspected Magma Inflow to the Channel Under Grindavik

- We swing between optimism and pessimism several times a day, often pending on which scientists the media chooses to interview. Like it's very hard to see how this magma inflow into the dyke under Grindavik is developing now since the information we are getting are often misleading, and it's not making my job any easier since on the one hand I don't want to settle between scientists, and on the other hand I want to come up with different points of view, but there are just too many of them. So again, the perfect uncertainty.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
When I first found this channel several years ago, three things stood out: The level-headed commentary that took what data was available, and applied common sense and reason to interpreting it, the spectacular visuals, clearly the work of a professional, and the warmth and humor of a man who cared about the people who would be affected by these geological changes. I'm so happy that none of this has changed over the years. By far my favorite view of what's going on in Iceland during these times of unrest.
It's a country that exists as a result of the volcanoes, and still has growing pains.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Although I’m a much more recent subscriber than yourself, it does not take long to realize how well the presentation is done. A real pro. The sense of humour is greatly appreciated as well. Cheers 👍🏼
And his videos are in 4K-UHD.
I couldn't agree more 👍
..."a man who cares about the people" ... ❤and loves Mother Earth !💚
Your comment about a tourist lost in a forest reminds me of what a native told me on my one visit to Iceland: "If you ever find yourself lost in an iceland forest, just stand up".
I've heard that one too. There are plenty of trees in Iceland, but they tend to be stunted.
I've been to Iceland many times now, but never heard that one. Funny!
You must have met my stepfather.
Hahaha 🤣
Beautiful visuals sir, thank you... The footage of the ship fighting the waves was awe inspiring.
Many thanks!
@@JustIcelandic I'm praying for Iceland...
Your B-roll is actually a strong A+. As a drone pilot/photographer your skills are impressive! (Fantastic scenery)
Thank you Gylfi...I'm sad to hear about the continuing disruption to Grindavik...these sinkholes and fissuresare really dangerous as you have no idea where they could occur...could the harbour be able to function aside from the village?...unfortunately I don't see the village being rebuilt any time soon...it would be sheer madness...yes your sarcastic humour is spicy, but good...Cheers from Scotland 😁🌠
Love your updates
Thanks a ton :) and greetings from Iceland
@@JustIcelandic Greetings from mosfellsbær lol 😄
It is so wonderful to listen to and see your Videos. I have trouble watching anyone else's because they just don't seem to have that wonderful sense of humor and working knowledge of your country. I sure do look forward to your vids if there is an eruption. Please stay safe and best regards from the West Coast of Canada.
Beautiful visuals, such a gorgeous country! Thank you for your informative updates.
Stay strong together 💚
What a Landscape...Thx for all Your work!
Your home town is so beautiful Gylfi♥️. I love the snow❄️❄️
Your narratives to the videos are very informative yet charming😊!
With the ground uplift continuing it does seem likely that quakes will be a larger magnitude/quantity. Where any ground quake measurement devices damaged around the area of Grindavik this past month?
It’s good to know that water, electric, sewage was not damaged in the city this month. Fishermen everywhere always want more hours in the day for fishing…it’s in their nature, as well as their livelihood.
Is there a geological museum in the country demonstrating the rock types and ages along with how it is evolving straddling the MidAtlantic Ridge?
Thank you for your update!
The most beautiful filming of the Grindavik area, this presentation deserves an Oscar for its fantastic quality!
Wow, thank you! Ið actually quite happy with good UA-cam view count :)
Thanks for the information. You truly do an amazing job.
Thank you for sharing your videos with everyone. Your descriptions of the importance of the harbor location was the first time I understood why this location was so important for the harbor. Enjoy your trip up north!
Glad you enjoyed it
Your videos are fantastic, different in a good way. Interesting information that is not on the mass produced tourist videos that are everywhere.
Unfortunately, the next few centuries will be very volcanically active with probable regular intrusions before Reykjanes goes quiet. I would probably move given the nature of local geology. My heart goes out to the people of Grindavik, stay strong.
That's called channel job security for Just Icelandic and a big headache for the people of Iceland. Hope tourism is allowed and is helpful. I recommend opening up a camara/drone shop - lol.
Completely identical to the last few centuries then. Thanks for that. 😂
Mate....if you know anything about plate tectonics, this has been the Situation Normal since Iceland itself was formed about 33 million years ago.
It's just a case of hoping that any magma comes up away from populated areas.
seems like Iceland has a caring and helpful community you will get through this as you always have
Thank you for keeping us updated. Would love to visit Iceland sometime! Your drone footage is incredible and its amazing what that lens can do. Thank you for showing where the live cameras were pointing and the surrounding area.
All of the other UA-cam channels presenting this topic are flip-flopping like mad on a daily basis, I guess it depends on whether they need more subscribers that day or whether they think it's a topic no longer worth dedicating time to. One day it's "MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Imminent eruption!" and the next it's "Oh, nothing's going on, the land is subsiding and lifting from the water table expanding and contracting and that magma sill is now wayyyyyy far away". It's frustrating. I'm so glad I have your channel as a reference, because you wait and see before presenting opposing information every single day. I appreciate you taking your time and presenting all of the information all tied together.
I'm landing in Keflavik on Sunday morning and will be there only for an hour before I continue on my journey, but after watching this video I do feel less anxious about whether the volcano will blow as I land on the tarmac :)
Thank you for showing and telling us about your country.
Welcome :)
Many thanks for the update. We are due to come to visit Iceland on January 31st, so your videos are invaluable. Take care.
My pleasure 😊 and welcome to Iceland 😊
Thanks for the coverage and stunning images . Love your style of presentation so refreshing with just normal speaking and no shouty man rubbish. Iceland is one country that I would have liked to visit mainly for the formula off road races but the more i see of the country is mind blowing totally different to what I know. Cheers and all the best from the Atherton tablelands Queensland Australia
Your footage is amazing and your information in invaluable. I am learning so much form your videos. Thank you so much !
So nice of you
I’m looking forward to future videos. You are a kind and patient man. A very clever one as well.
❤
I stayed in Grindavik at the northern lights inn hotel and had the best time. My family will have lasting memories. My heart goes out to the families and local businesses that are suffering right now. Stay safe. 🙏🏽
Thank you very much for your kindness and greetings from Iceland :)
@@JustIcelandic You’re welcome ☺️
Ive been thinking about you all since we heard of this latest danger...im praying as well.
Good and strong people in Iceland.
Thank you very much, appreciated!
I love your channel and presentation. Very beautiful video photography of Iceland!
Thanks a lot :)
Thank you for your marvelous content. I’ve been following the information coming out for several weeks but your approach is far more insightful than one I was listening to.
Wonderful to hear and many thank from Iceland :)
We were in Grindavak and Blue Lagoon last August. A epically beautiful place.
This is so extremely weird landscape and I love it, although it's not appreciated by all :)
Looking forward to seeing your archived videos, get some rest also and enjoy the holidays! Still watching from Maryland!
Thank you for the updates. I enjoy your commentaries of what is going on.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Gylfi, another excellent update with regards to the situation on Reykjanes Peninsula. Stay safe. Takk fyrir.
Thank you! Will do!
you're telling the story as a Icelander and not as a foreign news agency and give us great insight in how the people of Iceland live with this constant threat. It's almost strange seeing the beautiful images knowing what disasters could happen. At least I am considering visiting Iceland in the near future. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you very much and always welcome to Iceland :)
Thanks again, what a legend, regards from Yorkshire.
Glad you enjoyed it🤗
Hello from Western Cape South Africa. I love your videos
Thanks and welcome
Absolutely fantastic overview 🤩🤩
Thanks a ton :)
Thank you for your wonderful channel!
I keep on keeping my fingers crossed for Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon. Mentioning the forest near Grindavik made me think: Would it help Iceland's towns to have forests around them to slow down advancing lava flows somewhat? They of course can't _stop_ lava, but slowing down the flow of lava in the first place would add time for it to cool, which in turn would slow it further. This might buy inhabitants of the towns time to save their belongings or even lives in bad case scenarios. The worst case (Lava popping through the floor of the living room) would not be changed, but many others.
I guess Iceland's climate would offer itself for several kinds of pines, but also birches. As birches spread their roots near the ground they don't need deep soil, they grow fast, so give timber within a few decades and they even build up soil with their rotting leaves of the year before. In the long term, this might also help farming in Iceland, which might be much more interesting in the coming centuries on behalf of global warming. Birch wood has similar characteristics to mahogany when it comes to its use for carpenting and as construction wood. The stems usually remain rather thin, but there are many proven methods of processing it.
Collecting pine cones and birch seed could be done as school outings in mainland Europe as support project for Iceland! 🤗 We might even add some oaks and maples, just for you, our much cherished Icelanders! 🤩
I Love your drone footage and your explanations ! Cant wait for your next video!!!!
Thanks so much!
That footage from off the tip of the peninsular shows clearly that it is a large lava flow that formed it and the harbour at Grindavik. Bear in mind this could happen again.
Lovely footage and commentary, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it😊
Thanks for the update. Always appreciated 😊
My pleasure!
The coverage of the antennas in Grindavik is fabulous! I wonder if we could see more footage from around those, or maybe some still images? The radial (ground wire) field shows up very nicely - a classic vertical antenna system.
For the moment, a more tropical get away is encouraged unless you are addicted to volcanoes and other challenges from mother Earth. I am happy to watch from a distance, but to some time in the future a visit there has found its way on to by bucket list.
Our hearts are comforted knowing people not there. If they were we would worry. If not them then for us
Hi thanks for the lot of informations, its agreat footage.Greetings from Brunsvik in Germany
Thank you and greetings to Brunsvik :)
Thank you for the updates. Ya'll really should plant more trees though.
Another great video which of course makes me want to visit again.
You should! and welcome to Iceland :)
Unpublished goodies, he says calmly. LOL I can't wait to see them!!!
😊
at T=14:23; stunning panorama!
Just a teaser, full version soon, maybe today go tomorrow, working on it
I am by no means an expert here. But I wonder about the possibility of a deep borehole with a very large explosive charge to weaken the rock and trigger an eruption to relieve the lava pressure. “Popping the pimple” so to speak. Of course the blast would be in an area where hopefully subsequent lava flow would not be a hazard to the town. Regardless, we’re all hoping for the best outcome for the town.
Spectacular video footage. Sorry about the news though. Greetings from Liverpool.
Many thanks and greetings to Liverpool
I learned during the seemingly-unending COVID pandemic that getting frustrated and impatient wouldn't make nature move along one nanosecond faster. Since Iceland is dealing with geologic time, which is measured at forever-and-a-day speed, I feel tired just wishing so hard that it would at least give you something definate which you could make plans around...
No offence, but, as a Canadian I can't help but laugh at the idea of that being a huge forest. I still love Iceland though. I have been twice.
Yep, but I'm pretty sure he thinks it's funny too. 😅
🎉I'm a new sub love ❤ from the UK 🇬🇧 🎉
Thanks and welcome 🎉 with greetings from Iceland
Best regards
Welcome :)
The plant behind the moon was satrun.
Thanks, just remambered
Great job 🌼🌼🌼
Welcome :)
Seems like the 'DJI Mavic 3 Pro' drone would come in handy for you with the 7x optical zoom. With such distances in Iceland, you will always find a good use with the 7x optical zoom.
Now, I'm sure it was more the money that landed you on the 'DJI Air 3' instead of the 'DJI Mavic 3 Pro'. So, if that's the case, then you just have to live with that.
I'm always having fun with the 7x optical zoom camera on my 'DJI Mavic 3 Pro' drone when I'm out flying 🙂.
I saw a programme where two celebs stayed at a posh hotel near the power station. I wonder if it's closed now.
Yes there are 3 hotels there, all closed
❤
Welcome :)
you should ask perrmision to fly your drone and give them access to the footage. i bet you would be allowed limited access, as a lot are waiting around now protecting from thieves etc you just got to ask. just go up to a few scientists there or messages a few people. if you say you will allow them to review footage so your not invade people's spaces and be respectful. i bet they have less resources to drones and pilots than we all think. you have unique kit! i honestly think you might get a warmer welcome than you think. (plus your local to Iceland not a tourist getting TMZ footage and you past proof of being respectful)
maybe ask a few scientist friends who you give the footage if they can put you in contact with the right people. anyone here know anyone who can hook our boy up?
Your videography is better than typically found on UA-cam channels.
Thank you Gylfi, this was an important update and I am happy for the good news so far. I hope it continues. To have this update from a Grindaviking is extra special.
So difficult to make any plans under these circumstances, but keeping the people safe is paramount.
I agree, this is all very complicated and demanding
This philosophy of Legalizing and promoting Humanity that Iceland employs is a model for the World.
Bless UP❣️
You are actually turning into an ambassador to the Icelandic way of life. It is not only the contents of your videos that are great. You also have to make decisions about the structure of the story you tell, about how you enter all the bits of information into the video, about timing, about the overall look and so on. And the way you make those creative decisions tells us something about the Icelandic way of thinking, too. There is curiosity, thoughtfulness, openmindedness, resilience, care, love for your country, worries - but not to an extend to let them ruin your positive attitude, a sense for beauty, for the contrast between action and quietness, and so many more qualities that create a picture of a people I really want to visit one day.
best country on earth
Go. It's my favorite place I've ever visited on this planet. The land and the people are truly alive.
Hello from California, USA. I am fascinated by the current geologic activity in Iceland and have been following your updates. Thank you!
Love this guy, perfectly explained from the inside. Also for some reason him saying "With that im sending best regards from the volcano island, Iceland." Is so satisfying for some reason. Not tryna glaze but its facts
Hi Gylfi - Thanks for the update
Always welcome :)
✌️&❤ from 🇨🇵🇪🇺
I absolutely love your video updates - so much more 'real' than some of the 'click bait' - thank you for the work you do, for letting us know the real situation, for the wonderful filming and for your individual style. Stay safe - my thoughts are with everyone there. Warm wishes from Shropshire UK.
Totally agree!
I visited Grindavik and the Reykjanes peninsula in 2015 during a vacation to gorgeous Iceland. I was charmed by the waterfront and its many pieces of public art. Best wishes to all residents as you wait to see what happens next. My heart is with you.
Great videos these, and I really appreciate the inclusion of maps for clarity.
Glad you like them!
Your video is gorgeous in 4K (especially on a 75+" screen/wall), smooth and clear. The narrative is congruous, the narration is soothing. This is exceptionally engrossing. Unique.
Greetings, You predicted a while back that the eruption would take place in Dec. I am far from being a expert, real far, but it looks like you got it right.
I might get December right, but wow how Mother Nature tricked us all with those twists and turns
Brilliant video. Thank you for your amazing filmwork, Insights and storytelling!
Thanks, appreciated :)
Again thank you for the update. You're the best source of reliable unbiased information that I've found. Your work is very much appreciated Gylfi and I'm looking forward to visiting in jan if we're still allowed
Thanks for being so objective and honest about the situation. Some channels are just sensation seekers
I know 1st hand the raw power of the Earth. When Mt.St.Helens catastrophically exploded in 1980 people, 47 I recall were killed many kilometers away by the pyroclastic flows. The USGS had underestimated its power, making the no-go zones too small. In Iceland's case, I believe great caution is the better part of valor & discretion. I realize the burden of the residents is hard living away from their homes and jobs, but that hardship is less than loosing their lives or loved ones in a sudden unexpected eruption. Don't get too close to the show. Stay safe my friend.
👍👍👍❤️
Greetings from York, Pennsylvania, USA. Your voice is soothing and the drone views are beautiful! Thank you for the updates.
Thank you kindly!
thanks for the updates gylfi. i've a tab up on the multiple camera view of 'live from iceland' and have been watching the earthquakes just all over the place and wonderful auroras tonight.
there's so much guesswork regarding volcanology in general and iceland specifically to know the future but best wishes
Thank you for the information! Good wishes to you sir!
Thank you too
Thanks for the update! Watching your videos in Finland. Glad I found this channel here in UA-cam. I don't really enjoy the CNN or BBC coverage of the news as they have a somewhat shallow approach to what is going on. Enjoying the views of Icelandic scenery very much. Looking forward to the goodies you were talking about. Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas time! Love from Finland! ❤
Please publish the videos. Iceland is intriguing. And your composition is very good. The area of your home is beautiful. Love the snow.
We try to come to Iceland once a year now. It is a magical place. I love the emptiness, the sheer uniqueness of it, and the tenacity and openness of the people we meet. Thank you for the huge effort you put into this channel. Much appreciated.🇬🇧
Iceland is breathtakingly beautiful. Your images are amazing. Wishing for the best possible outcome. Head scratching to think they just cover up a fisser and carry on building 😳
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the update. Glad you got to go home for a bit. I guess it's just a waiting game now.
I appreciate your concise report about Grindavik and the impending disaster. Can't imagine the stress the people of Gridavik are going through. Always hoping for the best outcome of all of this, so everyone can return to their lives and homes. Thank you again for your updates, and look forward to learning more about Iceland.
Love seeing your snowy hometown!
More to come :)
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I’ve spent weeks staring at many mostly two dimensional and/or static maps, but with this one video of yours I’ve gained a better understanding of the positioning and relationships of features and risks in this portion of the peninsula, and on top of that the imagery is beautiful and your commentary informative and enjoyable. I very much look forward to viewing more of your existing videos and to seeing what you produce in the future.
Thank you once again for an excellent update
No problem 👍
Thank you for the information. So much on UA-cam is questionable. We’re all hoping for the best for all of Iceland.
I always enjoy your highly informative, thought-provoking videos. They always seem to me to almost be love letters to your hardy, resilient nation.
Well-said.
As always, Gylfi, I am with you. Still love your “own way of doing things”. Keep up the good work, but please stay safe.
Such a beautiful country, watching your videos has moved a visit to Iceland to the top of my list. Hopefully it hasn’t changed dramatically before I make the trip.
Beautiful videos and gripping narration, thank you and best of luck from Canada’s west coast.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ the Icelanders will try to keep it together until you’ve made your trip and left
Thank you Gylfi for the update. Always look forward to your reports, even though the news is currently not great. Following the situation closely here in Australia - and still hoping for the best for you all. Your coverage of the situation is always first rate and very much appreciated - hope the drone restrictions are relaxed sooner than later. All the best from your friends Down Under - 😁
New subscriber from Australia here. Please stay safe, thank you for your updates
Thank you for another outstanding video. Hope everyone can return to their homes soon. Stay safe, with love from Australia ❤
That you for sharing! Your photography skills are amazing. So nice to see your beautiful country. Dan from New Hampshire, USA
I’m relieved the fish processing companies are working again. And very good to hear that the emergency crews are practicing with the sink holes and other areas! Thank you for another great update, I loved learning about the community!
Thank you for your excellent reporting and your beautiful video footage. I hope that all the people in Iceland stay safe.
