Irreparable Damage Already and Sadness - Grindavik Awaits the Final Chapter
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- I'm sad to say that this looks extremely bad and we might bee looking at the town's last moments as it's sinking and skewing, and gas rising up while we wait for the eruption that most scientists seem to expect any moment now.
The town was evacuated again this afternoon due to the gas detectors and the tension is unbearable, especial for those who face to loose their homes in the eruption that is expected to come up somewhere along the main-road trough town.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
So very sorry for your pain. Thankyou for putting such a human face on this unfolding earth story. We are thinking of all you Grindivik folk and wishing you as well as possible, from Australia and doubtless all round the world.
Also a long time viewer from Oz. Our sincere thanks Gylfi for your work. Our hearts go out to all those affected.
Back in 1965-68 when as a student from Ireland, I worked and lived in Vestmanneyjar. Houses there were built by pouring concrete into a shutter which at its core contained a skeleton of reinforced steel, locking the floor, walls and roof together as one totally rigid structure, Cracking and separation shown on your video tells me that such high performance design is certainly not practiced in Grindavik, and I wonder why this is so, particularly on the Rekjanes peninsula. However knowing the great strength and character of the Icelandic people, I know that historically, no challenge that nature throws before you, will weaken your determination to succeed. My best and sincerest wishes in this impending battle. ....Kevin Fox.. Sligo Ireland
Yes, from Brazil too.
I'm British but have been living in Brazil since 2009.
It’s a terrible time you are going through and I want you to know you are in my prayers.
You said exactly what I wanted to say. Watching from the USA and hoping for the best.
Wishing you and the Icelandic people the best of luck at this difficult time from Ireland.
As someone from California, I can't imagine two weeks straight of quakes. That's insane. I hope the best for Grindavik. The earth rewrites itself and we will survive to build again.
I’m also a native Californian and want to share that the quakes we experienced in this Grindavik 2 weeks ago for 24 hours before we returned to the states felt different than CA quakes for some reason. We experienced up to 5.1 quakes there at the Retreat at Blue lagoon. They felt shorter, more superficial shaky than deep rumbling. I don’t know, I can’t explain it well, but I can say my travel partner and I- both Californians-did not feel afraid or overly rattled! Perhaps if we had homes etc it would have that same terror but the quakes themselves just felt different. ❤
@@treasurechest123 That's probably because the magma is moving the earth, rather than the earth itself moving. Still good reason to be afraid... not of the quakes so much as the eruption.
@treasurechest123 we were at the blue lagoon a week ago (from canada) and felt them too. It shook our can quite violently as soon as we parked our car. Perhaps I'm not used to the tremors but I was ready to head straight for the airport. We didn't even know something was happening with the volcano while we were there
Right?! I’m from the Bay Area and yea some folks think we move around THAT much. Hats off to the real quake soldiers in Iceland
Hey a Californian thread, Hiyas neighbors.
Thousands of quakes in a couple weeks, yeh I'd rather stick to our big ones every few decades instead. Now If you'll excuse me, I've got to dodge this wild fire, unless the floods and mudslides put it out first.
Man I love living in paradise!
Oh, this breaks my heart. When i visited Iceland several years ago, Grindavik was the first place I went after a long flight. I randomly decided to drive south along the coast from the airport before going to Reykjavik. I had lunch at Café Bryggjan at the harbor and had the most wonderful bowl of lobster bisque. The town was lovely and the people I met there were so nice. I hope for the best for all who are impacted by this.
Being Icelandic, I'm so touched and proud of people's willingness to help the residence of Grindavik. Companies are offering free service, big discounts, delaying morgage and utility payments and all over people are opening their doors to families and indivituals they have never met. Many employee unions are offering vacation homes owned by them at no cost and others are offering places to house horses, sheep, chickens and other pets. My uncle and his family live in Grindavik and their home is destroyed. They bought it only 6 months ago and now the only thing to do is bulldoze it down and build a new one. The cracks could maybe be filled up, but the foundation is compromized.
So you were OK with the event that happened in your nation a few years ago. The total destruction of potential life due to...
@@cmcoffey822 So only potential life matters? Not the rest of a person’s life, apparently. Noted by someone who’s who family was destroyed by forced birth and abusive tendencies latent in both extended families. Too bad some don’t care about life, only potential and fantasy.
@cmcoffey822 you must be a leftie with such a twisted 'so you are saying' remark. What a little sicko, go get help
DEW (directed energy weapons)are creating these so-called “volcanoes”. There is no such thing as “volcanoes”. We have all been brainwashed with lies all our lives. It’s time for the sheeple to wake up.
The Icelandic people are doing exactly what GOD tells us to do. Bless all of you for putting families and friends, livestock, pets , feeding and housing them free. Every country can learn a lot from you. Thank you, continue your kindness. I'm truly so touched.
Gilfi. I am so sorry to hear this news. Your professional delivery often tells us more than the scientists. Glad to hear the animals are safe, too. Please relay to the local folks that many of us in the USA have aching hearts for them and admire their incredible courage. My love to everyone. Take care.
Just discovered your channel, I'm so sorry for you and the Grindavik community, being witness to the slow agony of your homeland must be an ordeal. Your commentary is very heartfelt, as mentioned by other viewers the human side of this event needs to be put upfront. Hope better days will come soon, meanwhile hang on and stay safe Gylfi. Very nice channel by the way!
earnest, empathetic, hopeful. an excellent commentary on not only the geology but on the strengths and kindness of the people of Iceland.

All my sympathy to the people of Iceland, especially Grindavik. Stay strong!
Keeping you and the Grindavíkings in our thoughts. Thank you for all the hard work you do, making these videos.
Grindavikings! What a great name.
You and all Icelandic people are unlike most these days, you have a sense of community helping each other in any and all ways. I feel bad that there is nothing that can be done, and the pain of waiting waiting waiting for your home of many years, to disappear under a pile of molten rock must be very hard to bear. I send you all my warmest wishes From Glencoe in Scotland, with a hope that not all of your township will be destroyed.
This is a really well delivered explanation of this tragedy in slow motion, and so heartbreaking to see the town and the peoples’ livelihoods in such jeopardy. I sincerely hope everyone stays safe.
This is so sad for this beautiful community. Prayers to you all. Much gratitude for taking the time for sharing your videos. Stay safe.
You’re wonderful. I love the people always opened to help the ones in great troubles and distress. I hope you will soon return to a safer and more peaceful life. A big hug from Switzerland. Luca ❤
I am so very sorry for all the losses and pending losses.
Thank you for updating. Prayers to all.
Iceland is an amazing country with amazing people. I hope the world will step up and help as much as possible. Praying for you all.
I visited Iceland last year and my Viking genes just screamed with delight! We drove to and all through Grindavik. The town immediately went to the top of my list of where I would want to live. It breaks my heart to see this disaster unfolding and knowing that beautiful Grindavik might be gone and her citizens lives turned upside down. The people of Iceland are resilient, strong; tough as nails. I had no doubt that the citizens in other parts of the area would open their doors to care for their fellow neighbors. They are a stellar role model we should all strive to emulate. My heart is with Grindavik and her people. Thank you for your updates and please be safe. Love to you all from Baltimore, Maryland USA. Our doors are also open.
Love and prayers to Iceland and everyone in it
Hope you avoid the worst case. Stay safe and know many people from all over the world are sending their good wishes to the people of Iceland
Incredibly sad for everyone. Thank you so much for your updates.
Those of us that were stationed in Iceland, at Keflavik, love the country of Iceland. And all of us are very sorry for the current conditions that the Icelandic people are having to deal with. We will continue to pray for all of you and wish you all a safe environment. Please take care Sir, and continue to update us on the current conditions. Take care Sir, and hope you and your family are in a safe place right now.
I’m terribly sorry that you and the people of Iceland are going through this. You are all in my prayers. Much love from Texas USA. ❤
Thank you very much and greetings from Iceland
I am so heartbroken for all of those affected. We camped at the oceanfront campground there in September, and it was a beautiful place, and the harbor and fishing boats were so beautiful. Everyone we met was kind and helpful and went out of their way to be helpful, which has to be hard when they deal with so many tourists. PLEASE post any information on how to donate or provide support to those affected and help them materially going forward. Know that all of us that love Iceland and especially it's wonderful people are praying for safety and peace for them.
Iceland is by far one of my favorite countries I’ve ever visited. I’ve been there a few times and the land is so beautiful, all the people are so friendly. Everybody in the village is in my thoughts!
My heart, thoughts & prayers are with you & all the folks in your area! Such a sad time. . . so sorry for your losses. Thank you for your coverage / updates.
Our prayers are with each and everyone of you thank you for keeping the rest of the world informed…🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
Thank you, appreciated!
Thanks for this update, great work. Greetings and best wishes for all Grindavikens from Sydney, Australia.
Just such a moving video. I've been watching the webcam streams awaiting that impending disaster, without taking stock of the damage that has already happened. I have no words that could ever bring you and your neighbours through the town enough comfort. I hope this is over soon so you can get back to what you do best, wipe yourselves down and repair and get back to enjoying life. What an amazing country. I hope to visit someday.
Watching this video is the first I've heard of this situation. Thank you for informing us. Prayers to all those affected. Kind of lost for words right now. Prayers from California. Be safe!
It makes me very sad to see what is happening. I live in Mallorca and I visited Iceland two years ago for two weeks, and I still have not been able to forget the energy, sensations and emotions that I experienced on your island. It's something magical and I have a special connection with it. I wish I could spend a long time there and who knows, be able to work and live there and nourish myself with that magic that you have. I hope everything goes well and does the best possible damage. I send my greatest positive energy towards you
So sorry that your home, town, and community are having to experience this. Thank you for taking the time to put together these videos so the world can see how dire the situation is there. It breaks my heart that people left so quickly that they had to leave their family pets. If I could sneak into town and rescue them all I would. It reminds me of the fire we had here a few years ago that destroyed several neighborhoods. The community had almost no notice and had to leave the area and their homes quickly. Many were at work at the time and unable to return home to retrieve their pets. Some of those people were lucky and had neighbors who saved their pets for them, but a large number of pets never made it out. It's heartbreaking enough to lose your home and community, but to also lose a family pet just adds that much more to the grief. 😔
Thank you so much for this update Gylfi. Such sad times for Grindavik and her people. My heart is with you all. Stay safe from myself and my daughter 💜🌋🦄
All the best to the brave people of Iceland. Thank you for showing your always very fine videos from Iceland.
I think it is wonderful that you have such a warm hearted community...I also hope that everyone is safe...Greetings and sympathy from New Zealand...XXX
Nicely done. All the best, people of Grindavik!

My heart goes out to you and your Icelandic countrymen, currently facing such devastatingly unsurmountable odds! And as tragic as things may be now or have yet to become, rejoice now in the knowledge that you're still able to hug your friends, family, and loved ones. ❤️♾️

Gyfli, you and the community are in my prayers throughout every day. I wish I could give you a hug ❤
It is hard to comprehend the displacement and damage from the earthquakes and the anxiety awaiting a potential eruption. The people of Iceland are caring, responsive and ingenious in supporting their citizens. I send encouragement and empathy for all in Iceland for meeting this challenge.
Hoping for the best for the people of Grindavik and Iceland, your friend from Finland 🙏🏻
Thank you for letting us know. Prayers for everyone's safety and the courage and resources to rebuild your homes on surer ground.

My heart goes out to everyone in Grindavik! I am keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get any worse. I can't imagine this happening, and how devastating it would be. I absolutely fell in love with the peninsula. Video and photos cannot convey how incredibly beautiful it is! Grindavik has a special place in my heart, because it's where I tasted BBQ flavored Doritos and Polo cookies for the first time. Stay safe and strong! Love to Iceland from California!
Thank you for such an informative video. I have heard before how everyone handling this situation so wonderfully. Continue to take care of each other and stay safe. From Tennessee US of A.
Thanks for the update. My heart goes out to the people who have lost their homes. Stay safe in the days and weeks to come.
We drove through the town when we visited Iceland last September. It is a beautiful place.
Somehow or other clicking "like" is so wrong when a whole town is being shaken to bits.
Thank you for your calm, but emotion filled coverage of this ongoing event.
Stay safe
In Grindavik I learned to love icelandic dried fish with butter. I hope it doesn't come to the worst. Wish you a lot of strength!
It's so crazy looking back at this footage, and not seeing any lava around Grindavík or the Blue Lagoon. No earth walls, no rebuilt roads, no lava up against the fence. It's astonishing what can happen in 4 months! It will be very interesting to see a "before and after" video once all this settles down!
Yes I have a good collection already, I somehow felt as it would be a priority to til the Sundhnæukar craters and I got that one right, 4 eruptions already since my first drone tour over there
Thank you for a clear explanation of both the geological event and the human impact. I am so sorry for your loss and the anxiety you and your community are facing. And you still have the empathy to remember other nations going through diasters. Good humans are everywhere.
My heart is heavy listening to your terrible circumstances. I cannot even imagine the hardship faced here. I pray for all of you and have subscribed so that I can follow what happens. It is inspiring to hear that neighbors help each other out. The world could learn a lot from your people.
Sending up prayers for the people affected but this in Iceland!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope your situation improves as well as all those dealing with this. Truely a beautiful place.
Was just in Iceland in August. Hope things settle down as soon as possible. Beautiful country and very nice people.
My heart breaks. It’s so surreal to watch this build up to a disaster
So sorry for you and your town. I hope that something can be done to ease your recovery. Hallo from Australia
Thank you for reaching out to us and explaining both the physical changes and the emotional toll that constant earthquakes have taken on the people who lived there. What a disaster. You aren’t living in a war-torn land, true, but you are being displaced as if you were. I even feel sorry for the abandoned cats. Take care of yourself. Even those of us who live far away are with you in spirit. From Minnesota in the US.

Sending best wishes to you and everyone else affected by this disaster. I don't know what else to say. ❤
Thank you for sharing this video and your thoughts. Your information makes a difference because its coming from someone who lives there. Ive been watching the news and different people telling what is happening, but this video makes it real for me. Your voice tells me its not just a news story about the earth, its about real peoples lives. Im so sorry and we are praying for you and the people of Iceland.
I was reminded of this video by the news of the outburst today. I am very sorry to hear the outburst seems to be severe, and hope with all my heart that Grindavik will be spared.
I wish only the best for you and your neighbours. Keep up your awesome attitude! The video and commentary you are making will prove to be invaluable when it comes time to try and recreate the terrible disaster that you're living through. God be with you. ❤
Thank you for covering this in the way that you do. It is moving, touching, deeply respectful, yet informative. It brings a tear to my eye, and I don't even know anyone there. But I wish that I did.
I wish you strength and hope the rumbling ceases without an eruption hitting the town itself. The best of luck to your beautiful community and country.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, Iceland. ❤
My sincere condolences to the people of Iceland living through this huge catastrophe. My wife was in Grindavik this past September and told me how wonderful people are. This is a terrible blow, I stay safe, and live to rebuild.
Omg, I love Grindavik. My heart goes out to all of Iceland. This island will always be my most favorite place on earth.
The waiting and dread is killing me. And, I don't even live there! I can't imagine what the residents are feeling now! As long as they have their lives, that's the most important thing. But, we know it's so much trauma to have to leave your home and most of your possessions behind. I'm praying and sending love and hugs to their hearts. I will try to help with $$ when there is information about how to help.
The people of Iceland are very tough and connected to their land, so they have a good understanding of what's going on and they know that they can deal with it, no matter what happens. I was very close to this town on one of my two trips to beautiful Iceland.
Prayers to everyone. Stay safe and hopefully all your pets and animals too. ❤
Incredible story. I was surprised when he said that, even as it is with the damage and ground shifts, the town might not be inhabitable even if there is no local eruption. I really enjoyed the concise narration. Best of luck to all affected.
What a beautiful country!!
How fortunate to have a warning, in spite of the damage already sustained.
I'm so sorry. Iceland is my favourite place in Europe and I have some of the best memories there, the beauty of nature and kindness of its people... I hope the cats and dogs will be saved though! I hope all people will find new homes and loving communities.
I’ve never been to Iceland but. I hope to visit in 2024 it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit but never had the chance to. Both my sons have and they love Iceland. I’m so sad this is happening to your lovely country. Thank you for your coverage and keeping us updated. ❤️
My heart goes out to all of you! I know Icelanders are eternal optimists and supportive of people in need, so you'll come through this, even though Grindavik will be forever changed. Thank you for sharing so much detailed footage and information on what's happening.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all that are suffering from this.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2

It blew at 8:30AM and they were going to let in another batch that day at 10AM.
Yes, I remember when Mt. St. Helens blew, I stood in my back yard and watched the plume of smoke and ash, it was raining ash and towns east of Mt. Saint Helens were totally blacked out.

I am from Grindavik, born and bread, albeit moved from there some years ago. Family on both sides of my parents reside there and their lives have been catapulted into uncertainty. Watching the news and see this unfold is anxiety educing and all my sympathy is with those who have had to leave their homes and livelihood behind facing the fact that they may never be able, or maybe not want to return. Saddened to see parts of Grindavik in disarray by mother nature.
It's a special breed of people In Grindavik and I always loved to come there to work during fishing season, if the harbour will still be there in a few weeks, there will some fish processing remain in town, but the town might however become a tourists sensation in some form
Why did the goverment allow to built houses on the unstable ground? Must have been clear that there are risks. And is there not a single tree anywhere? Is this natural or were they cut off by some reasons?
I am sure many are wondering this too as am I. I am just a fishermans daughter and irrelevant to those who make the big plans and decisions. It would be interesting to learn why there? Why build there? But Grindavík isn't inventing the wheel and many towns around the world are build on shaky unstable land.
