  • What Halo Vehicle is the fastest in every Halo game? Could it be the Halo CE Ghost, or the Halo 2 Spectre, maybe the Halo 3 Warthog? Well actually it's the Halo Reach Forklift (just kidding)

Imagine a Wraith being overcharged to have infinite boost like the Ghost section in Halo 4, charging around indefinitely at 130kph. Put that power on the Banished Wraith, with all the spikes and extra armor to not only protect it but also shove obstacles off around and over the Wraith while the bladed sections rip up their armor.
The damage that could do is scary to think about. And that's without upgrading any of the weapons even a little bit.

Pretty sure I know what's causing your distance measurement issues!
It's likely because of networking. Without deep-diving into netcode... Your client is only getting updated by the server/host a limited number of times per second. Probably less than your frame rate. That means your client has to interpolate sometimes and predict where the vehicle's going to be to keep things running smoothly.
As an example, if you lag really badly and these predictions don't match the server, you experience "rubber banding" when the lag passes and you get an update from the server.
When you're measuring a small fraction of a second, the slight discrepancies created by predictions (and corrections when the client is updated by the server) could throw off your calculations.
    ---
Also, meters in game is just going to be a conversion of game units, and it's a completely arbitrary conversion. Meters only exist in the UI - game engine calculations aren't done in meters. In one game, a meter could be 50 units and in the next a dev could arbitrarily decide a meter is now 60 units.

Amazing work guys, especially with the methods you have access to. I just want to clear some things up as a modder: Every halo game uses world units as its unit of measurement for the game world, world units do remain the same size game to game so 1wu in ce is still 1wu all the way up to infinite. HOWEVER, what the hud displays distance as is always different each game. Motion tracker range is always a lie, sniper scope ranges are always inconsistent, and i haven't even looked into the flag markers or speedometers. To my knowledge no halo game shows 1wu as equal to 1 meter, its always some weird conversion. Thanks again for taking this much care and attention in your investigation for the video

That last test with the meme vehicles is what I’d expect for “which vehicle is the fastest”. Like, if I want to get somewhere quickly, the fact that the wraith can get up to 140 kph for a fraction of a second doesn’t matter; how fast is it getting to a place in total.
Maybe having a run-up distance before the race starts so all vehicles are at their max speed for it would help, to avoid the slow accelerators, or just a straight up drag race like what you did.

How about testing the fastest Master Chief in every Halo game? Also, one way to test speed is to measure the self-body length it can clear within fix time, you can try that next time. It's used when we want to compare speed of different animal, exp: human vs roach.

For halo 3 you could always take assembly (tool) change the actual value for length of boost not velocity from there you'll get the same exact amount just a longer duration and in turn get a better understanding of the speeds for the chopper and wraith there's also taking each one and changed fps each time then taking the average (much love amazing effort love the content)

With the resources available, if you are unable to measure a boost-vehicles' top speed, you could do a side view comparison. Use a warthog as a constant and compare the speed and position of the wraith to the warthog. If during the apex of the wraiths boost it gains any ground closing the gap between it and the hog, then its top speed is faster. You may even be able to get a number if you can figure out the rate of acceleration and deceleration.

This probably doesn't help, but I looked at the physics and found a way to calculate how fast the boost is as a proportion of the base speed, and that proportion is true regardless of framerate/engine properties/etc.
You need to run a boost-able vehicle along a track of known length, and time how long it takes to do that, just like in the video. The trick is that you need to do it *twice* . First without boosting at all, to get the vehicle's base speed, and another time where you run the track and boost exactly once. You also need to time how long the boost lasts.
The run where you boosted will take a shorter time than the unboosted time. Divide that time difference by the time spent boosting and add 1. That's how many _times_ faster the boost is than the base speed. For example If the time gained is equal to the duration of the boost, then the boost is twice as fast as the base speed. If the time gained is only half the boost duration, then the boost is 1.5x as fast.
Here's a formula, where (Sb) = the speed boosted, (S) = the base speed, (T) is the regular track time, (Tb) is the boosted track time, and (Db) is how long the boost lasts for:
    Sb = S * [ {(T - Tb)/(Db)} + 1 ]
This is true regardless of how you measure the distances and times. The proportion (the part in brackets) is a unit-less pure number. So if you can get an objective value for the base speed (S), you can objectively determine the boosted speed.

You could look at the models from each Master Chief and compare them to the models of the vehicles to get a constant unit of scale. After that you could record them driving from above and see how much they move in each frame to calculate how fast they're going.

@rocketsloth the mantis can move significantly faster than just walking forwards normally. If you move the mantis backwards diagonally, it does a strafing animation which covers much more ground. The travel speed when using this is much faster. Still not enough to become the fastest but I would say it would at least outpace the scorpion.
It's easiest to make this movement on mouse and keyboard as you can just hold 'a' and 's' or 'd' and 's'. You may have to slightly adjust which direction the camera is facing to get the right direction.

i feel like the wraith(and other vehicles with temporary boost) should have the average of boosting as often as possible and the slow non boosted speed because thats realistically the usable top speed you will be going at. its not fair to say its faster than a warthog if the warthog gets to the finish line first.

You seem to be measuring instantaneous velocity on the Wraiths, I'd recommend using 5+ full boost measurements rather than a single full boost as you have here, then averaging it with the average top non-boost speed for a good average top speed in a practical scenario, which may also be a large factor. You seem to be lacking a really dependable control factor in every game, you may be able to use the Chief's size in each game to calibrate your distances or simply lay each piece of footage out, ensure they're all the same length, and go from there. Fun vid and definitely want to see more of what you can determine in later vids.

This is off-topic although I have thought about the 'Guardian Forest' level and the 'Sentinel Guardian'. Do you think that the Spartan Laser was supposed to be the weapon the Guardian Sentinel used?
1 The guardian forest level comes before the level The Covenant so it would make sense that the Master Chief would have taken the spartan laser from a Guardian and still have it in the next level.
2 Laser weapons are more associated with the Forerunners than they are the Human Guilty Spark, the sentinels, that auto turret etc.
3 The Guardian has a red eye which I assume it shoots a red laser perhaps identical to the spartan laser?
I think it is an interesting connection. That the Guardian got cut and its weapon was kept in. instead of the Spartan Laser the 'Guardian Laser'.

  • @Slywyn

I'm not sure why boost speeds were even really calculated for. The "fastest" vehicle generally doesn't mean "fastest within a .4 second window", it usually means "fastest overall" which would be an average of speeds. Then you just measure how long it takes to travel some sort of set distance(100m or so if you can get it) while boosting as best as you can within that set distance, and average it out to get the average speed. "Which vehicle is the fastest while boosting" shouldn't have ever really entered the discussion imo, it should have just been an average.

I think the Fastest Playable Vehicle of all Halo Games including Air vehicles I guess and dare to say it is the Halo Reach Phantom, that you can get after activating the Buttons to get it with a Banshee, in the Mission New Alexandria near the End of this Mission. In normal Top speed it's not that Fast but in boosted Speed it gets really fast, despite not being Sure if it's really Faster than the H4 Pelican, Sabre, Seraph or Broadsword, you can accelerate the Phantom even more by get into Curves, which its flying maneuver behavior gets really Wacky. But I guess that Forward Boost + Air-Drifting Acceleration is probably a Bug since the Phantom usually isn't supposed to be Playable for the Players.

How to get velocity for Halo 2:
    1. Find a runway to test vehicles in
    2. Extract the level's geometry into a .ASS file using H2's Editing Kit Tool program
    3. Load the .ASS file into Blender using the Halo Import tool
    4. Scale all geometry by 0.0304 (this sets the scale to be 1:1 with real life)
    5. Use Blender's measuring tool to see how long the runway is. Use the figure for your equation's Distance variable.
    6. Use a stopwatch to get the time. Use that number for your equation's Time variable.
    7. Calculate Velocity with D/T.
    8. Repeat steps 6 & 7 with each vehicle.

I’m assuming that each game has a slightly different in game unit for a meter. But if not then this is all correct which is cool.

well honestly if each halo is slowly built off the last engine something like hidden values like world units wouldnt have much reason to change, atleast under 3 circumstances
      1. physics like gravity affecting the acceleration (which that has changed since halo 3 you jump higher then halo ce meaning the other reasons dont matter (but you can change world gravity if you want it to match i suppose))
      2. all the games have have the same overall decimal place limit if one game is only tracking 0.1 values but another tracks 0.001 would give reason to adjust the overall world units system
      3. if it caused some sort of issues (the warthog run on maw for example where they had to modify something to compensate for a goal they wanted even then they might not of needed to change world units)
since they had relatively the same number upto halo reach with the speedometer for race mode atleast the games up to that point are safe to assume they are the same world units (and with their math they can double check it since there are mod tools to read the files to compare (the issue is that you see acceleration speed and windup time not max speed if im mistaken in the files))

Hey game developer here it could be very easy to get a speed and change the fact that it updates every frame and make it update on a time interval no matter the frame rate hmu if you would like to do this I’d be happy to help

I’m shocked the warthog is faster than the ghost. I always thought the ghost was the fastest ground vehicle in halo.

Wait wait wait, I could have sworn Halo Reach's Revenant has always been faster than the warthog... also you forgot air vehicles, that being said in Halo Reach, the Falcon going at top speed and climbing should be insanely fast!

Why not mod the game to have infinite boost?
or set the boost speed as the default speed?
