Obviously there aren't 2.9 billion Americans. The leak was apparently 2.9 billion records. I assume each adult working in the US could have multiple records. Also, the database could have kept records of deceased people conceivably. Also, the company that was hacked was used in the US, Canada, and the UK to make background checks happen so the number of records is not limited by the current population of the US. (people in the comments seem to think this is political in some way, I neither meant it to go that direction nor do I see political indicators in the articles I read) Also at 1:00 in the video I edited the audio wrong so it gets super loud! So sorry about this especially to headphone users. Finally, and hopefully my last error: I do some terrible mental math to calculate that the value of a persons private info is $1, but that's wrong since we are talking about 2.9 BILLION records, so the better math would be that each record was for sale for about $0.0012. Even if I had 10 records for sale in the database, I'd only be worth 1 penny, not 1 dollar. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for watching! now i could be wrong but its actually not that bad, i recommend this video for true information. 3 Billion Social Security Numbers Leaked On The Dark Web
Also, I misspoke at the start of the video saying 2.9 billion Americans. It’s 2.9 billion records. I imagine a working adult could have multiple records to their name. And the hacked company worked in multiple countries. (Somehow the number discrepancy seems political to many people but I don’t see an indication of that in the articles) - Also watch out for the 1:00 mark in the video I will disfigure your eardrums by accident, poor audio editing. - Also also $3.5 million to sell the info divided by 2.9 billion records is closer to $0.0012 per record. So even if I had 10 records stolen, I’m only worth a penny to the criminals.
This is a horrible we all going to lose everything and be in debt. 2.9 Billion is UK, Canada and America. Credit Cards, Mortgage, Rentals, Car registration, Everything and everyone will pay and have money stolen in their name.
Does it matter about the number or the fact that the UNITED STATES IS A FUCKING JOKE CUZ FUCK THEM NUMBERS HOW ABOUT WE BECOME PROTECTED ABOUT OUR MY PERSONAL INFORMATION
Since Addresses, Names and SSNs are so often leaked, then we should make it a law that NONE of those pieces of data are used to secure accounts going forward.
Now, THAT would be legislation I could get behind. Well, if you're trying to open an account for something, your name will probably be needed. But your SSN? Nope. That shouldn't be required. So, I agree with you; good point.
@@BillyBlaze7 Nice 'logic' fail there. I'm for logic and rationality. It is stupid to do irrational things like rely upon things that you know are not reliable. And to that point, it becomes patently illegal to do so.
@@UnknownMusicianIt’s one agency, if you want to do a fraud alert, but you have to contact all three, if you want to put a freeze on your credit data.
Agree. The agencies are supposed to protect our data. Why is the burden on us, to ask them for extra protection? All the credit data should either be frozen and unfrozen when needed or, at a minimum, a fraud alert should be on every account and not have to be renewed every year.
Social Security cards should include your picture so lending institutions have ability to spot a fraud. The new picture card is not used as an I.D it’s basically for getting ,loans but the picture is an added layer of protection.
I said it when I was 22, why on earth are the credit bureaus and the alike allowed to be self governing. I’m now 39 and I am NOT SHOCKED by any of this news.
Well, there was also a massive hack of the OPM (federal employee database) years ago. So, I wouldn’t consider the Feds a bastion of security. And, credit bureaus are regulated. They just suck, anyway. Hackers are going to hack until the likelihood of getting caught is significant and the penalties are extremely severe. Like capital punishment level severe.
They will act on it for sure, but not in a way that helps us. Never let a good crisis go to waste, is how they'll react. The bigger problem is the kids SSNs. They don't usually get credit until they are 18 or so, but by then their SSN may have already been used and destroyed. Good luck fixing that 10 years later.
Get rid of credit cards. Why do we have to have a credit check when our government is further in debt then anything else on this planet? Bet you anything that info wasn't stolen and sold it was just sold by our own government.
That happened to me when i was 10. My sister's and my social security cards were in our mom's purse when it got stolen. At the time i didnt know my social got stolen so my mom had to talk to the agent and explain what happened. Thankfully everything got settled and i was able to enlist
Federal Government needs to held accountable for this as well as the company's involved... It's just another major reason that the Government taking everything digital including currency needs to be stopped, rolled back and prevented from EVER happening!
So, I can 1. set up a Fraud Alert on myself, and 2. Place a “freeze” on my credit. BUT, THE HACKERS HAVE ALL MY INFORMATION. SO, THEY COULD JUST REMOVE IT!!!
@@Galfrid Apparently you haven't tried this with the three major credit reporting agencies - because only one of them requires a pin to un-freeze - and what do you think they ask for to freeze your credit? Yeah... that's right.
Not quite. They're not going to be able to unfreeze your credit with your SSN alone and having your SSN isn't going to be enough to hack into any of your credit bureau accounts. It's still by far the best line of defense.
@@dizz6340 For Experian, just a name and ssn, and a working email address is all you need to freeze your credit (or someone else's). They email you pin to unfreeze - the others are worse. These agencies were sued not long ago for breaching data and comments were all over the place about how pathetic their dated, sometimes broken websites were, lacking basic security. They're criminals running a legalized racket to rate you on how willing you are pay interest to loan sharks - what do you expect.
They need to make hoarding data to the point of becoming a target, a crime. That data needs to be purged regularly, down to name and phone number IF THAT.
Always thought it was strange that the Govt. tells you guard this number like your life... then requires us to write it on just about every transaction we do!
How many of the new SSN's could be stolen by theifs via mail, or intercepted via e-mail though. It would probably just cause more problems. The system is already hacked, so they would likely have access to the new ones too.
The question really is, who DOESN'T ALREADY have your social security number. Every doctor or dentist you ever visited, every hospital you have been in, every one of your utility companies you have ever patronized, your credit card companies, your bank(s), probably car dealerships, your mortgage holders, etc. etc. In the 90s I knew a guy that purchased and sold several real estate properties. He told me EVERY SINGLE PAGE of the voluminous mortgage papers had his and his wife's SSN pre-printed on them along with the page number. At the time I figured there were probably mud huts in some third world country with their mortgage papers used as wallpaper on the walls.
As a network engineer I can say this with %100 certainty. Your SSI number was stolen years ago. Anthem lost ALL its Data including medical records and SSI numbers in 2006(I was there)
Yeah, and were they held accountable to the degree that this breach hurt the public? Anth still exists. If their very existence was in jeopardy, they would be far more serious about it, like maybe demand a custom O.S. for their security system that no one else has. I mean a ground up build not some modded O.S.
Your credit might be bad but your identity is worth millions, there are people whiling to pay hundreds of thousands for a clean slate on a verified identity.
That doesn't mean that someone won't use your Social Security identity for getting a job, renting, fraudulently filing for tax refunds, applying for your social security payments (if you don't have a social security online account). If they have your identity then commit a crime in another state or city then you get pulled over for a routine traffic stop and the officer sees a warrant for your arrest they would have to arrest you. So it's pretty serious.
This is exactly why I said "f**k it" like 10 years ago and just decided to work for farmers who don't care about dumb government crap. Cash is cash.. and even that will be gone before I die.
It's ridiculous that we must be the ones to do all this stuff. It should be on the lender to verify verify and reverify if they're giving someone credit

There are only 300+ million Americans, how are there 2.9 billion Social security numbers? CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT should be filed against NATIONAL PUBLIC DATA. As well, ANY company or corporation that holds anyone's data when they are no longer with that company or have any business dealings with the previous company should also face a class action lawsuit if there was a data breach. Second of all, if everyone in the USA froze their credit overnight. Do you know what kind of financial insanity that would cause and all the markets would crash? It should be illegal for any company to use or store your social security number for any reason. I get requesting it to verify identity when doing background checks or credit checks, but that info shouldn't be stored perpetually. It doesn't matter what encryption method they use, once some third party has a database with that info, it's at risk of being stolen.
As a person who once worked in Military Intelligence, I can tell you with absolute certainty that all the so-called remedies they offer you are a fart in a stiff wind!
Its scary to see the big major news networks not reporting on this. You see LA Times, USA Today, and the small networks doing so, but no CNN, no NYT, no AP. I think this shows that they’d rather keep it down low for some political reason

A 'freeze' is nearly worthless. Here are who can view your credit report if you have a security freeze: -Companies that that allow you access to your credit or monitor your credit report. -Companies that provide you with a copy of your report or score at your request. -Federal, state, and local government agencies, and courts in certain circumstances. -Companies that use the info for insurance underwriting, employment, tenant or background checks. -Companies that have a current account with you, and collection agencies used by your debt holders. -Companies that authenticate consumer's identity for reasons other than credit, or for fraud invest'n. -Companies that wish to make pre-approved offers of credit or insurance to you.
I just called to set the freezes up. I think my biggest concern is the info I just provided to freeze my credit is the same information I need to pause the freeze or unfreeze it, right? And isn't that the information that was leaked? Is there anything stopping someone else from just unfreezing it? I'm pretty sure only one of the automated voices said I would be mailed a pin and to hang onto it cause I would need it to lift the freeze.
I thought about this too. I did it via their online stuff though not via a call center. If you can unfreeze via a automated call center that's pretty bad.

Also, I misspoke at the start of the video saying 2.9 billion Americans. It’s 2.9 billion records. I imagine a working adult could have multiple records to their name. And the hacked company worked in multiple countries. (Somehow the number discrepancy seems political to many people but I don’t see an indication of that in the articles)
- Also watch out for the 1:00 mark in the video I will disfigure your eardrums by accident, poor audio editing.

This seems to be the norm for data security: use inadequate or poorly maintained data security measures; after the inevitable hack, place the responsibility on the citizen; provide fraud insurance to the minority who jump through the hoops; accept that as a cost of doing business while most people are left unprotected. C'mon!
If you want to guess the conspiracy aspect…..I wonder if a lot of these places not protecting their info who eventually get hacked actually own or own portions of the credit monitoring companies. Its all a shell game. We are the idiots who are forced to be the pawns.
Let's go back to paper.
Common sense.
Plot twist, that fraud protection service they offered, was breached this morning 💀 😭 lol
My Social Security card was lost years ago, but I have the number memorized PERFECTLY in my mind!😊
You can also lock your Social Security number on E-Verify to prevent someone from applying for a job with your number.
Can you elaborate?
Please elaborate 😢
@@betawolfhd if you're a victim of identity theft someone can use your SSN to apply for jobs in your name even though you don't work there, basically you can prevent them from doin so by locking the SSN
@@Jamellii right. But the part I get lost is e-verify is the source for this action?
What if they got hacked? Smh what a crazy world and crazy times we live in.
If the hackers have my personel info, won't they easily just unfreeze the credit themselves after I freeze it? 😒
That’s a question I thought about too. But I’d rather them meet a road block vs flying through the process of fraudulent transactions
@@BrendanEvan I think once you have associated your email address and phone number to your credit bureau info it makes it significantly harder for someone else to gain access
I have mine frozen and it is actually really hard to get it unfrozen…lots of passwords and verification. Do it, I just almost got scammed
In theory 2FA should prevent that. I think most attacks that bypass that are limited and require cookie cloning.
I'm not so sure. I've experienced a social engineering attempt once where a fraudster had spoofed my banks telephone number. I won't go into detail but the point is who can say for sure if someone gets your new data they can't spoof into the accounts. With automation tools like local housed AI now coming to market the whole security issue is going to get harder.
To my understanding, it was 2.9 billion records were stolen... I used the Pentest utility online, I found out that MY IDENTITY was hacked along with a few of my friends and family... My nephew WASN'T... or at least non of his records show up with the Pentest tool.
There were at least 12 separate records under my name were found.
It's NOT 2.9 DIFFERENT PEOPLE, it's 2.9 records that were stolen... but that is an enormous amount of records.

We need to go back to the old ways......no computers......no ai.....stephen hawking warned us about the dangers of ai before he died
How did they steal "billions" of social security numbers? The Social Security Administration does not reuse Social Security numbers. It has issued somewhere around 450 million since the start of the program. Were the other 1.5 billion or more issued to non USA people?
I showed a correction on screen at that point, mentioned it in a pinned comment and the description, and about 150 comments. Sorry you missed it and sorry I misspoke! Turns out the articles are even confusing. They say 2.9 billion people when really it’s 2.9 billion records. So you or I might have 10 or 20 records each because of various background checks etc. not to mention deceased people left over in their records.
The list contains info for people from other countries including Canada and the uk, that's why it's so large
The hacked information was scraped from the web and is of no substantial importance. The information was already available. The news articles ALL say "may." SSNs "may" have been exposed. Read up on the company that was hacked and how they obtained data. They are web scraping and your SSN has not been exposed in this incident. Good point.
Right.
Nope because they give you a PIN. To you
@@usergoogle60 That's great news !!!

It looks like we're gonna have to pay a monthly $20 to $30 subscription fee to lock our credit. To me, the scam is with the 3 credit providers. Lets all be honest and open, Its the perfect scam.
Correct, experian wants 4.99 a month just to freeze there OR all 3 for 24.99. BS I will take my chances on a hack. I don't have THAT kind of money right now.

No, they don't, that's their other services they are using as an upsell. A credit freeze is free. Credit monitoring is not. A LOT of people have made this comment.
@@BrendanEvan did you have to phone them to freeze it or were you able to freeze it online?
If you don’t mind if I ask which of the three credit report websites do you use?
Well…what bothers me about this is, SSNs were never supposed to do the kind of heavy lifting that we’re making it do, as far as identification numbers go. And since every American got affected, what would a country do to fix this? How feasible would it be to give everyone a new SSN, or would be like putting a band-aid over the problem because that’s just a new number that could get stolen in a future data breach?
Whoever in the Government gave our most private information to protect needs the woodchipper touch. Same for the people in the private company who was tasked with guarding so much vulnerable data.
Yeah, good luck making that happen.

Great reason for the government to enact a NEW digital ID

Strange how this always happens during election years...
Has nothing to do with that. This is year one of the biggest breakthroughs in A.I. technology EVER. And A.I. is going to get even more advanced extremely quickly. This is due to advances in A.I. tech and the corporate oligarchy being incompetent

going Earrape on the important bit was a nice touch I think. Definitely grabs people's attention if they're just listening to this in the background.
Accidental not tactical but thanks for the credit!
Years ago I put a lock on my credit reports. I did this because everyone and their dog was looking at my credit report, and I was tired of anyone messing with it when I was not applying for credit. The locks can be removed whenever you need to, if you are purchasing something and need that information available to them. Afterwards, you can put the lock back on. You can do this online for all three credit reports or just one or two.
Yeah, someone got my information and ALSO opened a credit card and banking account and business in my name. I moved fast but I didn't really know what to do. i just froze my credit. Thanks for this video. it will help people.
That sucks, sorry to hear. Hope you can get it straightened out quickly!!
Yep, the best way to protect our information is to give it to more places who already hand it out to other companies who get hacked on the regular.
Why can't the government automatically put a freeze on everyone's SS account?
Um, because, a lot of people would not have MONEY any more?
In a debt and credit based economy like USA, putting a freeze on everyone's credit will cause the biggest economic collapse in history of America. Loans and mortgages need to be issues constantly to keep citizens working like a sheep and prop up the economy.
@@papimasfuerte4671 Didn't think of that. Was up all night. Not getting much sleep lately.

You are entitled to one free credit report a year from all three bureaus. It would be wise to consider this if you don’t already monitor your credit. This situation is why.

So just add a third digit in everyone's numbers. The gov could easily do that for free really fast digitally. But of course why would they want to do that. amiright
That’s not as easy as it sounds lots of databases where the column width is defined as a specific length. You can’t just add a character.
Very convenient
3rd digit? SSN is already 9 digits.
Wouldn't be the first time.
@@PChazman1 I meant add a third digit in the middle numbers. At least in the US the format is xxx-xx-xxxx. So I am saying how hard is it to just add a third digit to the middle numbers. Everything is digital, and making 1 digit changes to everyone's number would not be a hard thing to do.
THIS is why the ridiculous new Corporate Transparency Act is a disaster. It requires owners of small businesses to file a report with the gov listing name, home address (not biz address), SS #, driver’s license, passport, photo, etc. What could possibly go wrong? And, of course, the bad guys it purports to catch will have complied, right??? Definitely a tool toward digital ID & all the control it affords the baddies.
The Government is in on it...
The company in question that was "hacked" didn't do the type of background check that would use your social security number such as you may have provided for a pre-employment background check. This company did proper name web scraping to round up, package and sell information on individuals. Most web information on individuals does not include SSN. When I search my own name I find some previous addresses, some old phone numbers and names of some family members. Also, some of the information is incorrect. This is the nature of the information that was dumped on the deep web. Don't get your panties in a was worrying about it.
What to do? Nothing. There is nothing you can do.

A 'freeze' is nearly worthless. Here are who can view your credit report if you have a security freeze:
-Companies that that allow you access to your credit or monitor your credit report.
