Hoodwinked! is a 2005 computer-animated musical comedy mystery film. It retells the folktale Little Red Riding Hood as a police procedural, using backstories to show multiple characters' points of view. It was produced independently by Blue Yonder Films with Kanbar Entertainment, directed and written by Cory Edwards along with Todd Edwards, and Tony Leech, and produced by Katie Hooten, Maurice Kanbar, David K. Lovegren, Sue Bea Montgomery, and Preston Stutzman. The film features the voices of Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, Jim Belushi, Patrick Warburton, Anthony Anderson, David Ogden Stiers, Xzibit, Chazz Palminteri, and Andy Dick.

My favorite gag in this is when they can't understand the squirrel's hyperspeed chatter, they record his gibberish then slow it down and he sounds sophisticated and eloquent.
Yeah, the slowed-down voice sounds like one of those old-timey radio news reporters because his regular voice sounds like one those fast-talking comedies from the 1930s.
It was ok when Dick Tracy did it, don't know how to feel about this one though.

I always thought the jank animation added a unique charm to the film. Made it a lot more memorable than some other animated films at the time.
Definitely same! I saw this film again not long ago, because it's a great comfort film for me, and it's like a perfect Modern Marvel antidote! With seemingly all films nowadays having infinite budget to make their animation look perfect and seamless, but the writing just feeling like every other film you've seen for the last 10 years, Hoodwinked stands out in my mind in a way no Marvel film ever could!

Fun Fact: The bunny turning out to be evil actually made kids in the test audiences cry, so they went back and made it more obvious. They nearly cut out the singing goat too, but he was too big a hit with said kids to let that happen.

My favorite joke in the movie was when the Wolf noticed Red riding her bike and singing her song. "Man, that's creepy."
In México, the wolf was voiced by “El Loco Valdez”. A comedy legend who also played a wolf in a series of movies for kids. We really appreciate that the studio chose him for the role.

I feel like the biggest saving grace of the movie is that even though it was clearly made on a budget of $5, the people making it still cared about it. They put in the extra effort in the animation, they made some pretty catchy songs that I at least still remember, the voice acting is very well done. All the areas where it was effort over expense, you can tell they still gave it their best shot.
Ya, that's why the sequel feels so empty. It is clearly missing that energy

Technically it was made with 8 million dollars, but there was still more effort put into it than FoodFight
you'd be surprised how many classic movies follow this exact model. off the top of my head, deadpool and the 1984 ghostbusters come to mind, but there are so many others.
@@yeldarb141983I can pretty much guarantee you that Deadpool- being a modern superhero movie- had a budget that was so massive that they could make it seem like it was made by people that cared.

There's nothing better than sitting down to watch the Nostalgic Man talk about something you barely hazily remember seeing as a child.

I still have the dvd and watch it for laughs. Growing up on looney tunes and such I just like silly humor and don't care what the point is all the time even when it's rediculous.

@@jacobwansleeben3364 Yeah, but not that weird. The multi POV storytelling is not commonly done, and it can stick with you if you do it right.
I'm personally grateful I saw this on TV and not in Theaters because when The Bunny makes the joke about 'Keith' changing his name because it's not evil enough, kid me lost it and probably would've needed to leave the theater because I was laughing so much. It'll always hold a special place in the hearts of anyone named 'Keith'.

Fun Fact: During production, Producer Sue Bea Montgomery showed little kids some concepts for the movie and watched the expressions on their faces. Since they especially liked the character of Japeth the Goat, they decided not to delete him, as they had initially planned.
I'm glad they didn't. As unneccesary as he is to the plot, his whole bit is hillariously over the top
the consensus seems to be that most of us like the goat.
The CGI might be rough, but I love this movie's method of story telling and the characters are all great.
Indeed, even the star-studded cast is good.
When it came out, I assumed the animation style was some kind of homage to Rankin and Bass.
It shares a lot in common with shows like “Rocky & Bullwinkle” or “Underdog” in that regard, where the creative humor and memorable characters make up for the limited animation.
@@dinosaysrawr No the problem is that they weren't allowed to have a big budget. They had to make do for what they had. So exceptions were low, real low.
It's surprising it turned out as good as it did considering that the animators were learning to animate while making the film.
I always find how the characters stories come together to be a delight.

A fun detail is that when Red is riding in the mine cart, you can actually see Wolf in the background for a split second
And vice-versa. Because when we see the Wolf in the mine cart at this point in his story, you can briefly see Red's cart and hear her scream.
A fairy tale crime drama wasn't a bad idea at the time.
I liked the idea of everyone telling their side of the story, it was an interesting new narrative

I like that if you pay attention to his first encounter with granny you can see his evil plan.
Surprised he didn't mention the improved "Watch out for Keith!" line.
Every scene with the squirrel in it is comedy gold. I listened to the director/writer commentary. On the commentary, they were both surprised to hear that many people thought that the squirrel was the best part.
I still like the part where the Wolf is creeped out by observing Red's musical number from a distance.
Hoodwinked addressed the singing before Disney did a "hey look how self-aware we are."
One of my favorite gags! First time watching, there were parts I enjoyed during Red's retelling, but it was during Wolf's section that I realized I was completely on board and loving it.
The movie really sums itself up in the opening narration, doesn’t it?

When I was a kid I loved this movie, because it was the first instance I'd ever seen of something with that story structure. Having the same events recounted by multiple characters, from multiple perspectives, in service of trying to piece together a greater truth. It was new to me and therefore compelling.
I like the partnership of the super fast talking squirrel with the calm, slow evenly tempered wolf. They would make a great "buddy cop" fairy tale team.
One touch I really love in this movie is how they are able to secretly put other characters in the others stories, giving a sense of connection - the best examples here are during the Red Riding Hood and Bad Wolf's stories in the mine cart sequence, not only you discover how the tracks are destroyed by the Bad Wolf but you can also see both characters crossing each other without either side noticing it.
I noticed that too. I even rewatched it so I could see when they crossed paths.
This movie is wild. Despite the sometimes nightmarish animation, some of the lines are amazing.
My favorite is the wolf disguised as grandma: "Are we just gonna sit around here and talk about how big I'm gettin'?"
Also, the French dub has some gold nuggets, like the line in X-treme Grandma's musical bit where the singer calls her "Alice au Pays des Mères Vieilles", a pun that makes "Alice in Wonderland" sound kind of like "Alice in the Land of Grandmas". Even the dubbing team gave everything they had!
I love this movie. My Wife and I still use the "never trust a bunny" line quite often.
So when the director of this film finally talked he had this to say about the film "And I realize that there were other independently-funded projects being done at the same time, but yes, we were the first… the first kind of a new model and a new way of making an animated film. It was made with no studio money, overseas, then picked up by a major distributor. A few other animated films have followed this path, but not to the level of success that Hoodwinked was able to achieve. I know Veggie Tales had a movie come out earlier that year, but that was with a struck deal and brand recognition. Hoodwinked was this freak of nature that was made completely outside of the studio system and, thankfully, worked. I rarely toot my own horn, but these are facts that never get mentioned and I am really proud of what our little film did. Hoodwinked was made for under $8 Million, and has grossed over $150 Million worldwide. That easily makes it the most profitable animated film of its time.”
Makes me even sadder that the director and this team was booted off the sequel and replaced with someone who didn't even *watch* the original.

This is one of those movies I didn't expect to like but have a soft spot for now. It goes to show that good writing really is more important than amazing animation. Something a lot of modern movies could learn.
Absolutely. Honestly a lot of cgi movies didn't age too well in the animation department but still hold up. Like the movie says, don't judge a book by its cover!
passion is often the missing element when you watch a movie and it feels soulless. Every other ingredient can be on point, but if the people making it either don't give a shit or treat it like a chore, the whole project will suffer.

Shrek, incredible, toy story, lord of the rings bakshi, toy story 1, chicken little, etc. Some worse than others
I loved Hoodwinked! So much fourth wall, tongue in cheek humor! So corny and yet somehow jaded. A true little gem.
I’ll say this much Hoodwinked was definitely one of the more unique movie experiences when I watched it for the first time
The Wolf was the best character in my opinion but that’s mostly because it’s Patrick Warburton and how he feels like the straight man to everything going on around him
Patrick Warburton voice is legendary
Wolf and the squirrel have such a fun dynamic. While the Wolf is pretty much the straight man his partner is a hyperactive fast talker. Super fun whenever they're on screen.
Single straight man amongst a group of wacky characters is one of my favorite tropes

When I was a kid, I actually thought Nicky Flippers was the villain instead of Boingo.
He just sounded TOO polite and TOO friendly when he was introduced. He reminded me of Stinky Pete or Mr. Waternoose. I found it legitimately shocking at that age when he turned out to be genuine.
He's definitely playing on tropes that kids are less familiar with

@@ericbreaux6124 Funny enough, one of their more famous movies, Little Mermaid, is heavily criticized by a good amount of people for destroying the original message of Hans Christian Anderson's story all for the sake of a good ending.
The idea of showing a well known story and then going through everyone's story like this is so good, I wish we could get something like it with a bigger budget.
My little sister and I always loved the goat cursed to always sing. His different horns were pretty cool
Also, I don’t think it was the point for the audience to not know Boingo was the villain. We got to figure it out early and then watch how they find out and catch him
So fun fact: Big Bad Wolf in this film was inspired by Chevy Chase’s character in Fletch (1985). From Wolf’s clothes, different outfits we see him wear, and that he’s a reporter going undercover it’s pretty obvious that he’s referencing the character in almost every way. Even some of Wolf’s jokes are probably an homage to Fletch.

This movie introduced me to the idea of multiple stories told from different perspectives converging and interacting with each other and as a kid seeing that for the first time blew my mind. I still love this movie
You repeated it but you've tapped into why this worked so well; They were actually trying. I remember watching this and really enjoying the tale and sorta "forgave" the animation because the humor/story were strong enough to carry it.
I laughed at Twitchy’s mispronunciation of dynamite harder than I maybe should’ve when I was younger.

Pitch Meeting references are tight! I saw this film as a gamble with my brother and a friend, and it's now a family favorite. For us, the soundtrack made a huge impact, especially since it mostly written by the Directors/Writers. It's just cool how much of each aspect of the film they worked on.
If this movie made it to Pitch Meeting, would he say "Cute little bunny rabbits are tight!"? Considering the ending..?

Fun Fact about Beavers is: Beavers are powerful swimmers that can swim underwater for up to 15 minutes. As the beaver dips underwater, the nose and ears shut to keep water out. Transparent inner eyelids close over each eye to help the beaver see.
Those eyelids are called nictitating membranes. Anyone who started a _Pokémon Sword/Shield_ game with Sobble would learn of them when their starter evolves into its final form.
Executive Meddling: The Weinstein Bros. had the songs cut down because they felt that audiences would be impatient with them. Anyone who viewed the full songs in the DVD bonus content will strongly disagree:
The second verse of Red's song "Great Big World" and Kirk's "Schnitzel song"
A verse in the song Japeth sings in his shack was cut. The cut was at such a point that Red starts to say something that is cut off when the angle changes.
I actually really like Hoodwinked. When I recommend or someone asks me about it when they see it on my shelf I tell them "It's not as bad as it looks. Go into it like its a student film or low budget passion project. It's rough, the animation is dodgy, and looks like it had no budget but you can really see that everyone was trying their best to work with what they had."

This movie was a total fever dream as a kid, they always play it on Cartoon Network usually on the weekends when I couldn’t get anything else to watch
That's how I saw most of it as well. I could never catch the whole thing though for whatever reason.
Those kids in the Woodsman's side of the story were by far the most demented-looking things in this movie, to me. They make the Ice Age baby look adorable.

I probably watched that movie like 2000 times as a kid (now 27), it is carved into my memory. It looked so much better in my mind wow
The Other Marty: The film was originally less star-studded than the final cut, until Executive Meddling ordered an All-Star Cast be brought in to replace most of the characters at the last minute.
Red was originally played by Tara Strong, and replaced by Anne Hathaway. Strong remains in the film as Zorra, the fox on Granny's ski team.
Granny was originally played by Sally Struthers, and Chief Grizzly by Joel McCrary, before they were replaced by Glenn Close and Xzibit. Struthers and McCrary receive "special thanks" credits in the film, as this replacement eliminated them from the film entirely.
David Ogden Stiers was originally double-cast as both Kirk and Nicky Flippers, which involved extensive Talking to Himself. James Belushi replaced him as Kirk, but he managed to remain as Flippers.
Voice actor Tom Kenny was originally Woolworth, while Tony Leech, one of the film's three primary creators, was Bill Stork. They were replaced by Chazz Palminteri and Anthony Anderson, but their voices remain in the film as two of the pig cops.
Patrick Warburton as Wolf, Andy Dick as Boingo, and Stiers' performance as Flippers are the only remnants of the original main cast still in the final film, apart from director Cory Edwards as Twitchy and unknown singer Benjy Gaither as Japeth-there was talk of replacing Gaither with a better-known country singer, but this was ultimately cancelled as Gaither embodied the role so well.
Y'know, I always found Japeth's "Be Prepared" song to be my favorite moment in this film. Just because it's catchy and feels like it belongs on a Frontierland soundtrack.
I still love this movie; and it came at a time where there weren't like a thousand other movies doing the same humor....quite yet. Favorite line is when the squirrel declares "I don't drink coffee!".
When I first saw this in 2010 I went from WTF! to secret guilty pleasure in about 15 mins. Utterly unique take on such a dark story. Peace All
Yknow, this trope is actually one that I miss when it comes to shows. I want to see a show have like five episodes that all happen on the same day, but each from the perspectives of different characters seeing only glimpses of the other characters and being confused as to why they heck they're there. Its one of the reasons I actually really like this movie.
Power Rangers SPD did a version of this. It was probably one of my favorite episodes of that run. Unusually for one of these types of stories, one character's accounts of what happened was 100% correct.
Arrested Development season. 4 has something like this. Each character begins from different points and ends up at a certain point on a day. New details are revealed to us the viewer in each episode as we see the events from their perspective..
the simpsons episode trilogy of error did it too

Honestly the voicework in this film is fantastic and really good you can really see the hard work the actors put into this to make it look good
This was one of those movies that I remember seeing the trailer and thinking I would hate it. But my kids wanted to see it, and I really ended up enjoying it a lot. Even when it became one of those movies that my youngest became obsessed with and insisted on watching over and over, I could still watch and enjoy it. I even like the music. Plus, I have a friend named Keith...
Unfortunately, the sequel is garbage.

I remember my mom taking me to see this movie in the theaters. I thought it was a pretty interesting movie back then. Looking at it now, I'm like, "this has to be a fever dream that I've had when I was a kid."
This movie is really nostalgic to me. Me and my older sister loved it. We thought the goat was bloody hysterical.

Fun fact: Red Riding Hood changed actors twice. Originally voiced by Tara Strong in the early first cut, she was recasted by Anne Hathaway when the Weinstein Company bought it for a wide theatre distribution. Then recasted her again with Hayden Panettiere for the sequel.

I love how all the stories actually tie together. The avalanche that Red tries to escape from in the mine cart was caused by Granny to take out the competing team and the reason why Red's car went of the rails was because the Wolf accidentally blew the rails up by throwing out all the dynamite.

The animation is terrible because the film only had a budget of less than $8 million. That is impossibly low for an animated film, especially a theatrical film.
Definitely the best of the “worst”. In fact, if we were to count ALL animated movies, this is probably better than most.

I will also admit that Disney's Bambi actually had an even smaller budget than Hoodwinked, at only $858, 000, though that hasn't been adjusted for inflation. Still, for a CG animated film at the time, Hoodwinked's budget was still pretty low. To put it in perspective, Doogal had a higher budget, at $20 million. And the animators working on Hoodwinked had to learn how to animate a theatrical film while working on the film.
Also, 2D animation is a lot cheaper than CGI films. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is cheap, but not a fully CGI film, so it is cheaper to produce. And its budget was $750,000, not $600,000. Still low, but not that low. It also only earned $5.5 million at the box office, which is still a profit, but its nothing compared to the $110 million Hoodwinked! earned at the box office, and the over $150 million made worldwide. The thing that makes Hoodwinked! so impressive is not just how low its budget was, but how successful it was despite its incredibly low budget.
Isn't it weird and strange how the first Hoodwinked film had cheap/bad Animation and turned out to be good while the Sequel (which Nostalgia Critic should review very soon) actually had much better Animation compared to the first film and somehow sucked & became bad at the same time???

I first saw this movie when I was ten years old. It was the first movie that I saw in theaters without my parents there to watch hit with me, so it kind of holds a special place in my history.
I thoroughly loved this movie as a kid. So much I remember from it too. I don't think it's the best movie, nor was it back then, but it still holds a special place in my mind as a goofy early 2000s movie.
As some people have commented, the animators had little to no experience with animating so it's surprising it was this good.
That being said, I actually feel the movie wouldn't have been remembered as much if the animation was better.
One of my favorites as a kid. I found it really funny and even now I still think it has its charm. Definitely a classic in my eyes

I grew up with this movie, and I still love it! It reminds me of simpler times and makes me want to be young again! It still makes me laugh to this day! God what I wouldn’t do to go back to 2010, that was when I first saw this. 😢
Another fact i love about this misunderstood film is: During a scene when Wolf and Twitchy are on the mine train and in the cave, Twitchy lit up a dynamite. He says it in a way, "Dinamitae, must be Italian.". It's actually a reference to 'A Christmas Story' when the father of the family reads on the crate that says Fragile. He reads it as, "Fragilee, must be Italian.".

Omg I'm so glad you reviewed this one! Hoodwinked is an absolute CLASSIC in my house, it ties with The Princess Bride for "Most Quoted Movie" in my family. I met Patrick Warburton a couple of years ago and he was just the greatest guy. Yeah, just a hilarious and out there movie. Love it. "CAFFEENE! YAH, BABY!"

The origins of that book you reference at 1:19 was actually stolen from a kid, and plagiarized by 2 adults.
An English teacher had an assignment for a class to write a story, my cousin wrote that story, and that teacher stole it (even kept the same names of the characters.)
My cousin and family decided not to pursue charges, because of how expensive it would be for the whole legal process.
I LOVED this movie as a kid, weekly viewings, singing along to every song, the works. Looking back, I knew the animation was rough but I decided to revisit it a year or 2 ago to see how it held up otherwise and couldn't believe that the writing was actually so much better than I remembered
I unironically love this movie,the whole one story through different pov has always been one of my favourites. I mean yeah the animation looks painful but still a good movie

There are SO many neat details, and funny jokes and lines in this movie that this review doesnt mention, the henchmans name being keith when thats not evil enough, the squirrel talking so fast that no one can understand him so they record him speaking and slow it down and he somehow sounds sophisticated and eloquent, the fact that you can see every single story cross over with one another both before and after each personal account is told, the only thing I wish they kept in is keeping the rabbit as the villain a mystery, because from my understanding of the original test screening it was actually a genuinely decent mystery and the reveal was well built up, but the kids got upset at it so it was made more obvious in the final cut
This movie was such a big part of my childhood for some reason. My family still has so many inside jokes we use from this.
Man this is more crazy than that one time Danny DeVito ate a entire Snow-Cone with a fish eyeball inside of it and then threw up inside of Cookie Monster's mouth because he started to sing Surfing Bird
Not sure if the internet has awards for best advertising, but I think Doug is on his way to winning it. SO MUCH CREATIVITY in what he comes up with to make the ads watchable, to the point where you look forward to them. What's really weird is how so few other people seem to have gone this route. "Really funny commercials do exit!" I keep wanting to yell at most other internet ads.
