If you’re struggling to play a fast 16th fill around the kit at 120bpm plus, today’s lesson is for you.
If you’re finding that your fast fills end up out of time and sloppy, and you’re always afraid of train-wrecking the band because of that… you need to learn today’s exercise.
Without learning the “Singles Subdivision Exercise” (which I’m teaching you today), you’ll struggle to get your hands automatically playing in time so that your fills naturally happen in time without counting.
Let’s smoothen out your hands and boost your fill-confidence today. YOU CAN DO THIS!
I believe that ANYONE can learn the drums, and I believe you’re far more capable of becoming a great drummer than you think you are. Don’t sell yourself short! SUBSCRIBE for more Non Glamorous videos that get straight to the point of solving drumming frustration. Stay Non Glamorous, Everyone!

This is basically what I use as a warmup every time I sit down on the kit. First I do hands, orchestrating it around the kit, then feet (double bass). I start at 60 bpm and work my way up to 100 (110 on a good day). I've noticed great improvement in my timing since I started religiously using this as a warmup.

This video answered a lot of questions about exactly what you described … getting lost in a fill and fearing to derail the groove. Great explanation and practical solutions Stephen, thank you

Absolutely agree with your comment NOT to use your metronome to subdivide for you. Best to keep it on quarter notes so you develop an ear for the subdivision. Great lesson!

Great advice .. Thanks .. I'll be doing this.. One of my buddies once told me that when you see a band and think they're tight, notice how precise all their subdivisions are.

A Title that is somewhat deceiving? This vid is Soo much better than what I thot it would be, with Valuable Information & Critical Points that are Super Important. You've done it again Stephen Clark!
p.s. I can play 120 bpm, however sustained playing indicates a weakness with the left hand. Indicating a need to work in that area. Thx for the new Goal of 160 bpm.

Thanks once again, Stephen, for this very useful video, as usual.
My objective, maybe one day: Basket case by Green day (172 bpm, 🤯)

Stephen, do you use the metronome on your phone or do you have a device that is better? Thanks, great video today

Everlong by the Foo Fighters and Run To The Hills by Iron Maiden are the songs I want to be able to play some day. At this point in my returning to the drums career, I'm somewhere in AC/DC land, so it's gonna be a while.
