It'll be interesting to see how this goes over with APS-C shooters. No doubt it's an amazing lens, but you commented when comparing it to the sigma "if size is a concern" or close to that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd guess that for a large percentage of APS-C shooters, size is a concern, otherwise, they'd be shooting full frame. Not to mention, the Sigma 56/1.4 is a fantastic lens in it's own right and is a very compelling option. Time will tell I guess. It's great to see Viltrox just crushing it lately. More options are always great, except for the occasional case of analysis paralysis. 🙂

Using it on my Fuji camera for a while now, and I'm pretty happy with it (of course, if it was a 85-90mm, I would have been even happier, but it is what it is). The slower autofocus is not that big of an issue, as I mostly shoot portraits (but it totally was to be expected for me, as moving such big glass elements is not that easy for a STM motor) and it's pretty decent in most other aspects ^_^.

  • @DaveSoltura

Thanks for the stellar, trustworthy review as always, Arthur!
As someone who already has the Sigma 18-50 2.8-, this is an an appealing alternative to the Sigma 56 1.4 since I'd only be paying for just a bit more telephoto reach/compression, and the large aperture.
Ths though, creates a completely different perspective, and it's a lowlight beast!!
The weight though... 672 grams, whereas the Sigma is 280g, woah! And it's about twice its size.
I guess if a killer portrait was all I needed, this would really come in handy.
Still, I wonder why the Sigma 56 1.4 wouldn't be enough, as it seems the whole world has been celebrating that as an excellent portrait lens this whole time.
Better autofocus, more video usability so its versatile, and the wider perspective makes it easier to use in tighter settings.
Thanks again for the amazing review!

I just got this Viltrox and comparing to Sigma 56mm.
So far Sigma seams much more versitile - can use it for product photoshoot (With Vitrox its harder because of 1m focus) and easier to use for street photo (I can put It to the pocket of my jacket with my sony a6000).
With Viltrox you will get a bit extra bokeh, but need to check it how different it is.

In the portrait montage, it looks like there is a circular pattern to the background that is pretty noticeable in the photos where there is a large separation between subject and background. The last photo @3:13 is the best example in the montage, but there are others as well.
Is this something you noticed only in the output JPEG files, or is it visible in the ARW files as well? I don't have any experience with telephoto lenses at f/1.2, so it might just be a thing generally, but I suspect it's not.

Damn, I was just about to buy an A7 III + Sigma 85mm 1.4 (after struggling for months whether I really want to switch to full-frame) because I want the slight step-up from my A6500 + Sigma 56mm 1.4 for portraits. And now you come up with this APS-C portrait beast, making the decision even way harder :D I think the look of 75mm 1.2 on APS-C (= 112mm 1.8 full-frame equivalent) could possibly be more impressive than 85mm 1.4 on full-frame. Would be really good if you could make a comparison not only with the Sigma 56mm 1.4 but also with the full-frame SIgma 85mm 1.4 because I think I'm probably not the only one who's asking himself whether this Viltrox could be a better (or similar) portrait alternative than a 85mm 1.4 on full-frame.
But I need decent Autofocus, because I'm also shooting animals. Would you say the Sigma 85mm 1.4 full-frame lens has a noticeably better AF than the Viltrox 75 1.2? If so, this would probably be the better choice for me.

Great pictures. Of course, it helps when you have a great subject. 😅 I think for portraits this seems to be an excellent lens. However, I don’t consider it a “good” travel lens because of its size and being a prime lens only. Thanks for the review. On another lens topic, how would you compare the Sony 24mm, F1.8 (at 24 mm) to the Sigma 18-55mm, F2.8 at 24 mm in regards to sharpness, contrast, etc.? I know the Sony has better low light performance, but wondering if the Sigma would be a good travel lens versus the Sony, especially when one considers the “clear image zoom” capability of prime lenses on my a6500. Thanks.

    • @pentagramyt417

@@alternativemushroom So great. You know, I am going to start next year monetizing with portraits, and I am only worried about depth of field, like clients will say "meeh, I expected less depth of field" and also I know I will shoot in night conditions llike street photography (or portraits too?) and when I use my dark telelens lie f6.3 for wildlife, I know ISO above 6400 like 12.800 is very bad for A6400 in denoising (ends with good colours but lack of details) and of course A7III would handle it better probably.. So I asked if I need to really move to full frame or rather buy just a good lens and start doing the job at first. But if you haven't any bad opinions from your clients that means it's prefectly fine to that job. Professional photographers also say, that clients doesnt event know what is aperture and doesn't look at that like we do.

I can appreciate it theoretically, but with the size and the weak minimum focus distance, it’s just not for me. Not much smaller than something like the Samyang/Rokinon 135/1.8, but a great option for an APS-C shooter. Except for the mfd… even 70cm would have made it a lot more versatile. That’s what it comes down to for me. This seems like an excellent portrait lens, but not great for anything else because of the weight and weak close-focus.
There’s a Viltrox 27/1.2 nearly out on Fuji which will likely make its way over to Sony. I wouldn’t be surprised to see something like a 40mm, which could complete a trio of f/1.2 pro lenses-a mid-telephoto 75, a wide-standard 27, so a tight-standard 40 makes sense to me. It’d be like those many fast 58mm lenses, kinda

Dunno if their pro line has the same problem but a word of caution with Viltrox: buy from a local store in case you get a lemon, I bought a 56mm 1.4 and the lens would behave erratically (focus point will suddenly jump and move on its own) when trying to focus on an eye, exchanged it for a second sample and same problem, went with the sigma 56mm instead.
Same problem happened with my first copy of their 85mm lens exchanged it and the second one behaved properly.

Will be interesting to see if the USB-C firmware port gets any use with improvements. Took a risk and we will see. Thanks for your video. Do you plan to buy one? This vs the Sony 85 1.8 on apsc? Which would you choose for portraits.

Especially with the sony lens being sold with a discount at 300eur at the moment
Lighter, smaller, cheaper, yes theres that difference of f1.8 vs f1.2
      Tough choice...

    Newbie here. I have a fujifim xt5 + 33mm F1.4 . I shoot mainly portraits.
I am intending to add this to my kit but worried the focal length would render this useless in a hotel room / small studio or any tighter indoor space.
I.e is this mainly an outdoor portrait lens?

How is the chromatic abberation for this particular lens? I've heard so much CA issues on viltrox lenses, does this one suffer from it as well?

I have a a6000, are there any videos available for shooting for products used for ecommerce? I need a recommendation for a lens that would be perfect for this.

I just went full frame and I'm broke!! A7r v. Any suggestions for budget lenses that can use the whole 61mp? Also I'm too lazy to sift through a mountain of videos by different channels. 😂 that bokeh on this lense looks pretty mint. Wish it was fe 1.2 af with macro capabilities 🙃

Hey my friend. Can you advice me? I got a sigma 18-50 2.8 and now I have money to buy only one prime . I love doing portraits . Headshots and shoulders but also need to do full body. I Wil shoot models . If you could advice only one lenses for all around which one would be? That gives nice headshots as well.
From what I seardhed the most flexible would be the 33(50) that can do all the angles . 56 would be to tight for some situations . And don't forget I already have the zoom lenses with 2.8 so I can use as well for the portraits . Now I need one prime that could do everything . Can you give your advice? Thanks

The 56 is awesome , but Just wait for the 27mm f1.2

For portraits I would still go for the Sigma 56mm 1.4. I have it, and the bokeh at F1.4 is unreal. I know you have the zoom, but there's a huge difference in the size of the bokeh balls and subject separation from F2.8 to F1.4. It is worth the money!

I like my Voigtlander 65mm F2 more than this. It is darker, but offers a much better working distance. And the photos from it are of unique quality.
