omg, i was this moment trying to decide between this two. actually i found a discount and the vitrolx is the same price here in brazil than the sigma. and i was thinking, hopefully arthur will do a review today, and now you did! thanks a lot

Viltrox are bringing out an f1.2 lens that sits between the 27mm f1.2 and the 75mm f1.2 (google their roadmap), so that will likely be around the 56mm focal length. Bye bye Sigma f1.4.
Cannot still decide whether the size, tighter focal range & bulk of viltrox is worth it over the reliable, compact & regular 85mm focal range of sigma. Any thoughts?

It's much better but the problem still persists. There's not as much focus breathing if any, but the autofocus, although improved, still doesn't perform perfectly. Many of my shots taken with that lens has been out of focus, or focused on a weird spot.

I've been looking at the sigma 56 for its small size and excellent image quality, but this Viltrox although quite a bit larger is looking very tempting for the portrait lens.
I agree with all you had to say . The longer the telephoto the bigger the separation. Price and size are also points that will favour the Sigma. For my money I would choose the Sigma and get it in MFT Mount to achieve a similar look to the 75mm. You do fantastic videos and I would just like to say thanks once again on a fantastic review .
The sigma 56mm f1.4 on MFT is equivalent to 112mm f2.8 on Full Frame. While the Viltrox 75mm f1.2 on APS-C is equivalent to 112mm f1.8. The angle of view will be similar but the Bokeh difference will be Night and Day.
The 56mm f/1.4 is probably the best lens made the last 10 yrs as it performs extremely well on all systems. Viltrox 75mm looks great but is also higher priced. I guess it depends which Focal length you prefer. Btw is there no fringing on the viltrox? The viltrox 56mm suffered from it badly
$550 is a great value. I have this lens with a X-H2, I also shoot a R6/Sigma 105. I use the R6 for “traditional” portraits and the X-H2 for more vintage/artistic look. I shoot both on my HS Sr shoots and so far my clients are picking more Fuji shots. The XH2/75 combo is amazing. I will be getting the 27mm, I spoke to a rep at Viltrox and begged for a 50mm 1.2 PRO as well for a nice trio.
Well, most of the photos was taken from the same distance, so difference in bokeh is more visible. I compared both lenses as well. If you get closer with 56mm (to achieve the same composition as with Viltrox) the smootheness of the background looks more similar. The main difference is that on 75mm background is a bit larger (so we see less background details and can focus more on model). Probably by using 100mm this effect would be even stronger, bokeh rings bigger but actually hard to tell is it mean better. For portraits its amazing, but its not enough to call it better overall. I find Sigma alot more versatile. You can shot amazing portraits as well, Its easier to shoot inside the building. You can put it to the pocket of your jacket and shoot with it everyday. Its warks better if you want to do a photos of a product. I will keep shooting with both lenses and decide which one to sell (based more on is it convenient to shoot with 56mm or 75mm) but it will be Viltrox probably.
After a while I think both are worth keeping, both are amazing. I think I will shoot with Viltrox for planned sessions and use Sigma when wanna go light.
Thank you for the video. Have to ask which firmware version did you have on the Viltrox? I just checked and looks like there is a 1.0.1 or even a 1.0.2 version now available or will be soon looking at the Fujifilm XF version. Can you tell us what version of firmware you had please. I currently have both and will be comparing them on the new A6700. By the way what firmware version are you using on your copy?
Great comparison Arthur (thanks)! I have the Sigma 56mm 1.4 right now and have been eyeing the Viltrox 75mm 1.2 but... I'd be curious to see how an 85mm 1.4 or 1.8 performs against these two in an ultimate portrait lens test on APSC. Hope you and the family have a good up coming week. Cheers from Canada 🍁 Brett
I’ve used several 85mm lenses on my aps-c camera. The Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is not that different compared to the Sigma 56mm (slightly shallower DOF but not as sharp) The FE also doesn’t resolve as good on a 24mp aps-c body (CA, LoCA, and flaring is more prominent compared to a FF body) The Sigma 85mm f1.4 however, is an absolute beast on aps-c (if you can live with the bulk & heft)
@@saifaldin_ But all the 85ers are for FF, so naturally bigger in size. Maybe Sigma could add a 85mm specifically for APS-C to their contemporary line-up that's smaller¿ One can hope :)
wow, i was actually debating between the two of this.. i was leaning toward sigma because of the portability and quality at the same time but Viltrox compression and quality is pulling me over... im so confused.
I had both and recently sold Viltrox, don't get confused Viltrox is more sharp lens but Sigma has better autofocus , portability also in sharpness Sigma is 90 % as good as Viltrox. Not just that 85 mm ( 56 ) Focal length will be used mostly in day to day photography.
Hi Arther and everybody! Sony 6400 owner here🙋 I have Samyang 85mm 1.4 FE. Mainly for portraits and street photography but sometimes I found it too tight. (Is it because the lens is for full frame and I'm getting about 102mm on a crop sensor?) I was considering 30 or the 50 mm but now I stumbled across the Viltrox 75 mm and I think I will like it. My question is will there be a big difference between the Samyang 85mm and the Viltrox 75 mm in terms of distance? Is the Viltrox 75 mm will stay exactly 75 mm on a crop sensor? And am I getting more distance on the Samyang 85 mm? I appreciate any feedback 🙏🙂
Thanks Arthur for this comparison. I recently switched from Sony 7-IV to the Fuji X-H2 and picked only non-Fuji-lenses for the initial start. I will recieve my Fuji-mount copy this week and I already own the 56 and will definitely do my own comparison, especially because I also have the all new 27/1.2 coming in the same package 😅 - holy trinity. Keep you posted
@@PatrickWithCamera actually not - I ended up with more glass than before. The journey continued and now I own the new X-100VI and a Lumix S5-II with just 4 lenses and this actually is very powerful.
The scenarios were fairly simple on the missed focus shots. Did the screen show u eye AF is correct but the actual shot had missed focus? Then viltrox is unrwliable 😢
what makes this lenses specifically for aps-c and not full frame, when im looking for lenses, how can I tell if one is made for full frame or aps-c. new to photography!
Both are sharp but I still choose to use the Sony 90 f2.8 for portraits but if needed for some reason I still love the Sony e 50 1.8. But both lens looks great
I found that the FE 90mm macro too sharp for portraits (you can see every pore and hair on the skin) The E 50mm f1.8 renders good. Only problem was that it was slow to focus in low light conditions - but that might not be an issue on newer bodies (I used it on an A6000)
@@saifaldin_ Being honest I haven't noticed the slow autofocus on the 50 f/1.8 oss. But it could just been because I've been using it for so long. User of a 6400 & 6700. But I know the 90 is so sharp I love it lol
@@HagaishiSama I shot with the 50mm f1.8 for about 2 years on my A6000; and i used to use it a lot back then as it was my only prime lens. Like I said, the slow focusing might have to do more with the camera instead of the lens (since the focus is very reliable in good light)
@@saifaldin_ i got sony 90mm and sigma 56mm, didn't see much difference in sharpness, on both u can see every pore and hair on the skin, at F/2.8 I would say sigma is even sharper than sony, sony peak resolution is at F/5.6
I think at this point it's really nitpicking as both are superb lenses. I prefer the sigma for the following reasons: 1) Shorter minimum focusing distance. 2) Better autofocus performance 3) A fraction of the size of the Viltrox For me, the slightly "better bokeh", which of course is subjective, and better colour rendition aren't worth compromising on the above 3 factors. Great review btw Arthur, have been a fan since 2016. Keep 'em coming!

The Viltrox is sounding great buuuuuuuut it's worrying it's missing focus so often.. it would be really annoying to find out afterwards like 1 in 5 of my shots are ok but not great just because it didn't focus quite right :/
Samyang 75 1.8 seems to be missing from this fight. Oh, it will also cover full frame. I'd love to see Sigma through down a 70 1.4. It'd be smaller lighter than the Viltrox & we'd finally have a proper 105 equivalent
Hi from the Philippines, kamusta? What can you say about Sigma 18-50mm to A6700? I will use it for cinematic videos and a little photography, thanks in advance. =)

Good comparison! Wanted to know if there are any updates on af performance after firmware update 1.0.4 in Nov 23 as people say that it was not reliable for fast moving subjects like birds, running pets, children, etc in the very first firmware? I am in the market for buying one. I currently have sigma 18-50 f2.8 for my a6700, looking to have a prime now-- confused between sigma 56 f1.4 and the this viltrox 75. Performance wise 56 seems to be reliable. Wether sealing, image quality wise viltrox seems better. Also this will add a bigger focal length for my use.
Be aware that on a bright sunny day F1.2 and F1.4 simply let in too much light even for the maximum mechanical shutter speed of 1/4000 with ISO 100 on Sony APS-C. The a6700 electronic shutter can go up to 1/8000 or you can use a (variable) ND filter to mitigate this.
Love it! Thanks for this! Although, I’m struggling to justify the size to performance gain on this one vs full frame. I’d be interested to see how your A7c sits in the comparison with the Samyang 85 1.4 especially framing somewhat equally like you did. Cause that FF rig would be lighter than your 75 1.2 set up and not far off of price difference.
Hahaha yeah the humidity in Florida really sucks for photography. If the lenses are just a little bit cooler than the outside air they will fog up. I end up using the heater in my car to warm them up. It is very frustrating. It really makes getting quick shots on the side of the road impossible.
I'm still undecided on which to get for my Nikon Z6. The Viltrox 75mm f1.2 or the upcoming Viltrox 16mm f1.8 I already own the Viltrox 85mm f1.8 and Viltrox 13mm f1.4 for Nikon Z. Both the 75mm (APSC) and 16mm (FF) are priced almost the same.
Hi new to your channel. Was wondering for portraits if i would notice a difference in sharpness between the sigma 56 vs the 18-50 2.8 ? I am aware of the aperture difference but my main concern would be center sharpness. I am really happy with the 18-50 but just wondering if the sigma prime would be worth purchasing. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much ✌️
Awesome, thanks for this! May be a dumb question, but- these lenses that are "made for APSC," does that mean they are true to the mm measure? or is this 75mm on an APSC still going to show up as 112mm? Do we still have to do that math adjustment?
On an xt5, I find viltrox to be quite a lot sharper than the sigma. When it nails the focus that is. I don't think I have seen a sharper lens personally than the viltrox
I was gonna originally get the 56 1.4 because I wasn't interested in paying $1k or so for the new 56 1.2. But then I stumbled across the 75 1.2 by chance and it's been a gem in my bag. For portraits I want the best look to compliment the person I am photographing. And in that department the 56mm focal length in general doesn't compete in that regard.
Indeed, sigma trio makes sony aps-c so attractive, especially sigma 56mm, for its size and weight is surprisingly great optically. Without sigma sony aps-c probably would be a lot less popular, for sure I wouldn't be in sony e system.
I got into cameras this year, and I got a Sony zve10, a sigma 30mm and a tamron 17-70 for a few months. I’m always on the look for next lens to buy, I’ve always been very interested in the sigma 56 mm, great to see that they are all their options coming out. At this point, I’m still more interested in the sigma because it’s cheaper, lighter and smaller than the viltrox. I already find my tamron lens heavy enough
I have tamron 17-70mm and sigma 56mm. I use tamron much more than 56mm but I don't regret getting it. Bokeh + sharpness is so good on sigma trio. If you really want small lense buy sigma. For me tamron is not even big lense because 90% of time I use big and heavy lenses for birding. So yes YOU NEED that 56mm sigma X)
i have 2 friend own the 75mmm on fuji. both of them mention that at f1.2 the AF hunting is serious and terrible. only at f1.4 the af is almost perfect. however the 56mm has been great since beginning on sony and on fuji it has no issue at all.
Shorty I compared the Sigma 56mm 1.4 with the 18-300 of Tamron at taking portraits. They are both very nice especially at daylight. So I don't think the 75 mm is really necessary if you don't shoot in dark churches in a wedding or so.

Viltrox gives a bit more washed/less contrast background that makes the model stands out a bit more, which I really like.
Vs Native 85mm 1.8 E Mount which is better than Viltrox Pro?
Can I please ask where would you place the Fujifilm 50mmf2 in comparison to the sigma and the Viltrox?
Have you had any AF-C issues with the Sigma and the a6700? My SY 45 1.8 hunts ASF and I've read that the Sigma behaves the same on it
I am curious what you think about the Viltrox 75mm vs Sony FE 85mm 1.8 on a crop camera.
Sigma, Viltrox or the Sony 85mm 1.8 for portraits? I shoot with an a6500 😊
Is the miss focus annoying?
Great comparison Arthur (thanks)! I have the Sigma 56mm 1.4 right now and have been eyeing the Viltrox 75mm 1.2 but... I'd be curious to see how an 85mm 1.4 or 1.8 performs against these two in an ultimate portrait lens test on APSC. Hope you and the family have a good up coming week. Cheers from Canada 🍁 Brett
I’ve used several 85mm lenses on my aps-c camera. The Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is not that different compared to the Sigma 56mm (slightly shallower DOF but not as sharp) The FE also doesn’t resolve as good on a 24mp aps-c body (CA, LoCA, and flaring is more prominent compared to a FF body)
The Sigma 85mm f1.4 however, is an absolute beast on aps-c (if you can live with the bulk & heft)
@@saifaldin_ But all the 85ers are for FF, so naturally bigger in size. Maybe Sigma could add a 85mm specifically for APS-C to their contemporary line-up that's smaller¿ One can hope :)
@@angelsjoker8190 Yes, they are.. I wouldn’t mind a sigma 85mm f1.4 specifically designed for aps-c.
Which camera do you use for these photos?
wow, i was actually debating between the two of this.. i was leaning toward sigma because of the portability and quality at the same time but Viltrox compression and quality is pulling me over... im so confused.
I had both and recently sold Viltrox, don't get confused Viltrox is more sharp lens but Sigma has better autofocus , portability also in sharpness Sigma is 90 % as good as Viltrox. Not just that 85 mm ( 56 ) Focal length will be used mostly in day to day photography.
i ended up ordering the sigma instead. portability is just a major factor. @@neethuandthomasphotography
Hi Arther and everybody!
Sony 6400 owner here🙋
I have Samyang 85mm 1.4 FE. Mainly for portraits and street photography but sometimes I found it too tight. (Is it because the lens is for full frame and I'm getting about 102mm on a crop sensor?)
I was considering 30 or the 50 mm but now I stumbled across the Viltrox 75 mm and I think I will like it.
Why the switch please?
Are you happy with that switch?
@@PatrickWithCamera actually not - I ended up with more glass than before. The journey continued and now I own the new X-100VI and a Lumix S5-II with just 4 lenses and this actually is very powerful.
The scenarios were fairly simple on the missed focus shots. Did the screen show u eye AF is correct but the actual shot had missed focus? Then viltrox is unrwliable 😢
It's the real deal! I have it on my A6700 and it continues to astound me.
Which one would you make as an EDC?
what makes this lenses specifically for aps-c and not full frame, when im looking for lenses, how can I tell if one is made for full frame or aps-c. new to photography!
E vs FE.
FE = "Full Frame E-Mount"
Hey great content as always 🤩Which one is good for video ? Autofocus? I own a xs20 !!! Upload more contents abt fuji cameras..cheers !
Both are sharp but I still choose to use the Sony 90 f2.8 for portraits but if needed for some reason I still love the Sony e 50 1.8. But both lens looks great
I found that the FE 90mm macro too sharp for portraits (you can see every pore and hair on the skin)
The E 50mm f1.8 renders good.
Sony is a macro. Slow focusing
Awesome review ! How about sigma 105mm f1.4 full frame vs viltrox 75mm f1.2 apsc ( 112.5mm)
I'll stick with the Sigma - Focus matters, and hopefully they will update the firmware to fix the focus issues on the Viltrox
I think at this point it's really nitpicking as both are superb lenses.
I prefer the sigma for the following reasons:
1) Shorter minimum focusing distance.
2) Better autofocus performance
3) A fraction of the size of the Viltrox
For me, the slightly "better bokeh", which of course is subjective, and better colour rendition aren't worth compromising on the above 3 factors.
Great review btw Arthur, have been a fan since 2016. Keep 'em coming!
56mm 1.4 🔥
these lenses are so cooooool:] Thanks for the video! But what are the top lenses you would recommend now? Maybe you could have an updated top 10 lenses in your collection:]
Firssstt! Been waiting for this, thank you Arthur! 👊
The Viltrox is sounding great buuuuuuuut it's worrying it's missing focus so often.. it would be really annoying to find out afterwards like 1 in 5 of my shots are ok but not great just because it didn't focus quite right :/
How about the comparison to Sigma 105mm f/1.4
The difference is about 1,000$. You're welcome.
Hi Arthur, did you update the Viltrox prior to test?
Samyang 75 1.8 seems to be missing from this fight. Oh, it will also cover full frame. I'd love to see Sigma through down a 70 1.4. It'd be smaller lighter than the Viltrox & we'd finally have a proper 105 equivalent
Yes!!!!!
Did you edit the photos in this video or was it straight out of camera ?
which camera u used? 6000?
Hi from the Philippines, kamusta? What can you say about Sigma 18-50mm to A6700? I will use it for cinematic videos and a little photography, thanks in advance. =)
Wonder how viltrox 75 would compare to sigma 85,1.4
Bonjour.
Is the 85mm 1.4 not even better in bokeh? For example from Samyang?
After few updates from viltrox , hopefully misfocus might lower significantly, Thank you viltrox for this glass
I'm still undecided on which to get for my Nikon Z6. The Viltrox 75mm f1.2 or the upcoming Viltrox 16mm f1.8
I already own the Viltrox 85mm f1.8 and Viltrox 13mm f1.4 for Nikon Z.
Both the 75mm (APSC) and 16mm (FF) are priced almost the same.
Wonder how the Samyang / Rokinon 75/1.8 would stand up in this group. Probably with some misfocusing, but otherwise I believe it’s very sharp.
The Viltrox has some special kind of magic going on. Shockingly good lens.
Arthur R hi nice video I was looking for a portrait lens for APS-C but what camera did you use for the Viltrox 75mm 1.4 ??
Hi new to your channel. Was wondering for portraits if i would notice a difference in sharpness between the sigma 56 vs the 18-50 2.8 ? I am aware of the aperture difference but my main concern would be center sharpness. I am really happy with the 18-50 but just wondering if the sigma prime would be worth purchasing. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much ✌️
I can't say I've used the 56 1.4 yet. But the 75 1.2 is definitely way sharper than my Sigma 18-50 2.8
What camera were you using?
Awesome, thanks for this! May be a dumb question, but- these lenses that are "made for APSC," does that mean they are true to the mm measure? or is this 75mm on an APSC still going to show up as 112mm? Do we still have to do that math adjustment?
you still need to multiply by 1.5ish
@@ptrcksln Thank you!
I have both, sigma for traveling around, viltrox for more special moments
What are you thoughts on the Sony a6700? Such a awesome little camera 😊
He has a video
On an xt5, I find viltrox to be quite a lot sharper than the sigma. When it nails the focus that is. I don't think I have seen a sharper lens personally than the viltrox
i love the viltrox but has problems with auto focus a bit
great lens but would postpone getting it till the AF issue gets resolved (maybe in a firmware update)
better colours on the viltrox. I've noticed the same difference when using Zeiss Batis vs other lenses on my a6400
I was gonna originally get the 56 1.4 because I wasn't interested in paying $1k or so for the new 56 1.2. But then I stumbled across the 75 1.2 by chance and it's been a gem in my bag. For portraits I want the best look to compliment the person I am photographing. And in that department the 56mm focal length in general doesn't compete in that regard.
I blindly go for Sigma just for those dimensions and weight without even watching this video.
@@henrihurme7677 this tamron is sooooo good! I’m always impressed by the image quality when looking at the results
i have 2 friend own the 75mmm on fuji. both of them mention that at f1.2 the AF hunting is serious and terrible. only at f1.4 the af is almost perfect.
however the 56mm has been great since beginning on sony and on fuji it has no issue at all.
es un video que esperaba bastante. excelente.
75mm does have nice focal length, but I like a bit more character in bokeh of Sigma, even flaring. Both are amazing.
Cheers! Compared to Samyang 75 1.8 could be interesting ...?😉
I just bought a sigma 56mm 1.4 because of your good reviews about this lens. Now here comes viltrox. 😢
Shorty I compared the Sigma 56mm 1.4 with the 18-300 of Tamron at taking portraits.
They are both very nice especially at daylight.
So I don't think the 75 mm is really necessary if you don't shoot in dark churches in a wedding or so.
Great video as always, but it seems you cover only apsc cameras. The recently released canon r8 is in my opinion a fantastic camara. Full frame at just 1500$ with top notch auto focus and color science. I think you should try it.
For sigma 56mm lens, You should walk closer to the subject, to get same head to shoulder portrait
In this way, bokeh comparison is more meaningful
