By January I’m burnt out for hunting as much as I can whenever I can (usually unsuccessfully) and around late July early August I start getting the buck fever again. Love the content guys, perfect timing
This is the most true statement here. I'm now tryna figure out what saddle setup I want to try this year to add a lil razzle dazzle to the season. Last year was amazing so I can only pray this year is a beautiful year for us all out in the woods and water.

If you are hunting the same location and the same stand, that’s not a good idea to hunt as much as you can, if you are new to Hunting, definitely go out as much as you can no matter what, but after you get the hang of things Hunting as often and as much as you can, and having many days in the stand is not a good thing. You have to be selective in which days you hunt if you’re hunting 20 to 30 times before November hits it’s a good chance you have already blown out all of your stands for prime time each time you hunt you’re going to leave scent behind
On the bumping deer thing, the buck I shot last season November 15th he was chased out of a corn field by a combine ran about 20 feet in front of me, saw me, and sprinted away. I knew exactly where he was running and walked down there and sat and shot him 3 hours later. He was acting like he never got spooked by the combine or me. As calm as can be
I’ve seen some nice bucks casually feeding while tractors and people are doing field work in and out of tractors
On blood tracking/trailing, you made a comment about low exit wound. I believe this is more important than we realize. I've shot several deer from the ground, that had virtually no (or very light) blood trail. I think this is because the horizontal trajectory of the arrow through the deer means that the blood has to pool into the body cavity space until it reaches the entry and exit level. Contrast that with a shot from a tree stand, where the exit hole is (presumably) lower than the entry point. The blood doesn't have to fill as much volume before it reaches an outlet. Just my thoughts from my own experience.

I feel like it’s important to add that a lot of this has to do with people who are hunting a lot of different properties and if they kick the deer out they just go somewhere else. If you are hunting a specific property it’s not typically a good idea to dive into the buck bedding a bunch of mornings early season if you also want to hunt it in the pre rut and rut
Agree 100 percent in iowa the key is stay out let all the impatient young guns push giants into ur trap then when all day is on ur there or on fronts wind perfect u got eem boom 💥 or if he shows up on ur mini plot on a scrape early its on right wind better sneak in right like a ghost tho!

Here in SC, the bedding areas are so dense that you typically can't even get inside of the dense thicket, so you have to hunt the edges of it. Most of the time, these bucks are not leaving that dense thicket until just a few minutes before dark. Even when you are as close as physically possible to their bedding area, you a aren't going to see them until either you can barely see, or you will hear them coming out of the thicket just before you start to climb down

@@csoultrain80 maybe the whole state is a night time bedding area. I’ve definitely found deer bedding in less dense wooded areas at night many times. One time on my way to the tree I was going to climb I ended up seeing some eyes reflecting my flashlight and there was a doe bedded like 10 yards from me as I was walking. I ended up sitting down behind a tree and my plan was to sit and wait for shooting light and take a shot. She ended up getting up about 20 minutes before shooting light so I continued to the watering hole I was planning to hunt. She ended up coming to the watering hole around 9am or so but I never got a clear shot.
That's true, but the 'bedding area' is much larger than you're portraying it and has enough space for you to set up inside an area that deer will move through. They won't expose themselves much in daylight, but they will move within cover in broad daylight.
@BG-bx4ey the ones that I'm familiar with, yes they are large, like even hundreds of acres, but the thicket is so dense that I couldn't get through it without a damn chain saw. This season, I do intend to try harder because on one of th, m there is an island of mature hardwoods in the middle of it that I'm going to try to find a way to. And in another spot I may be able to get inside the bedding area by coming in on the other side using a kayak
Sometimes the bedding is so thick the dogs can't even get them up and out of it.
By the way I really love your videos I have loved deer hunting for 45 years and still learn a ton watching you guys !
I think a lot of people get confused that maybe their property is a nocturnal property because how much pressure they put on it or something like that but that bucks moving in daylight somewhere
I think that with this it greatly matters how many acres you have of Hunting land let’s face it for your average hunter. They don’t have thousands or hundreds of acres. They’d be lucky to have 50 acres…. Sure if you have tons of acres none of this stuff is really going to matter but if you take a hunter who has 16 or 17 acres all of this stuff matters, you spook a big mature buck off a small property. It’s a good chance that that buck is not coming back, 3 to 400 yards away that somebody else’s. How much hunting you have greatly dictates what you can or cannot do.
A lot of people (including me for most of my life) create nocturnal properties by dumping a lot of feed or planting a plot in a wide open area on a small property.
to whom it may concern...the part about bucks being nocturnal IS a myth. But in some parts of the country...A BEDDING AREA IS A MYTH. In the South...(Peabody for instance THP), as accurately pointed out by Aaron in the first part of the video, "EVERYWHERE is a bedding area. And it is really easy to find bedding cover when only 1 or so percent of the public land is forested...like IOWA!!! Whitetail hunting is extremely SITE SPECIFIC for how to hunt!
Ahh the nocturnal buck is definitely not a myth.
Of course he gets up " for a few minutes " a couple times during the day.
But 90% of his movement, feeding, and chasing will be done at night so he's way more nocturnal than anything else.
I get up and move a couple times through the night, maybe even grab a snack....But I'm not nocturnal because 90% of my activities and feeding is in the daytime...
@@matthunter1667 I've hunted very mature bucks in my suburban area that would not leave 1/2 to 1 acre thick plot during daylight.
I consider that nocturnal. Nocturnals exist under certain circumstances.
@@matthunter1667exactly opossums bats racoon and a lot of other rodents but the one that hits everyone the biggest is owls I’ve seen owls mid day and I had three racoon that showed up years straight 4pm everyday they come out in the day just mostly night

Excellent point. Here in the MS hardwoods, there’s typically not a specific “buck nest” or specific bedding area. Deer bed in tree tops here. So a lot of these tactics and suggestions just really don’t work down here. Good video though.
Midwest deer are easier to pinpoint “bedding areas” in the hills of southeastern ky for example identifying where deer are bedding is a guess at best. They will change often.
Imagine having thousands of acres of ground that’s all extremely high stem count and hard to navigate. Finding bedding there seems nearly impossible sometimes
We are in the western Ozarks and we have a half-section of unbroken timber. We mostly hunt the edges where the fields are on the north and south ends of that. It’s easier to keep that whole area as bedding.

Looking forward to the content this fall. First season in a long time that I may be sitting out, found out I have cancer 3 weeks ago and my surgery is 5 weeks before opening day in WI and I can’t lift over 10lbs for 8 weeks and have to slowly build back up, so dragging is out of the question

For me what I have learned on the public land I hunt. Going in before daylight is a great way to get busted and blow out the bedding area.
I just can't make it in early enough in the dark to beat them back to the bedding area.
So now I start my walk in at gray light and set up for a mid morning to mid day hunt.
Doing it this way has very much improved my deer sightings and getting on deer.
of the 13 bucks i have taken ten have been in the morning one was early afternoon 2 right before dark , i love mornings and rarely ever spook deer going in , always try to get between food and bed,

Bad advice, been there, tried that, and failed.
They immediately started moving around after dark.
I learned deer are very sensitive to human presence.
Better to hunt a different area as much as possible and pick a morning or evening hunt for a spot but not both in one day.
Have different ways of getting to a spot whenever possible.
Trust me, I've tried the over saturation way and by the third day wouldn't see a thing.
The later in the season the more you have to let them be.
@@stevecooper8121 I'm not saying sit in the same spot every time. I'm saying the more you go and do the more you learn and can apply what you've learned and the more time you spend in the woods the better your odds are of success.
@@jeffkuntz4166 I understand, my situation with the property I'm hunting is that I've got only one way in, neighbors on both sides of me of have feeders also and a creek bottom that they use extensively, which is thick and unsuitable to try to get into with out spooking the hell out of them.
These deer pretty much live their whole life in a half of mile circle. They have everything right there.

That follow up muzzle loader shot is epic
The last portion is so true. Ive had two occurrences where ive had bone and blood and it disappear within 50 yards!!! That was after being hit with a 12 gauge broadside at 80ish yards. Not a far poke. Same thing but only blood where i shot one that had a trickle of blood only after 20 yard shot w/ 12 gauge. It’s amazing what happens that goes against the mind when youre excited and have the wind and weather and deer reading the script youve had in your head all year or past experiences you lean heavily on.

To the early season stuff... my Learn to Hunt last August was 12 mentees, spread over 9 properties, totalling about 1500 acres, spread throughout the county... and we went 10 for 12 (9 does, 1 buck) in one weekend with rifles. Everyone saw deer, morning and evening... it was insane.
I’m a Bama boy and all of the good deer I’ve ever taken have been in the woods before 7am. Never seen a shooter buck in a food plot morning or evening.
Same here in PA. I always hunt in the morning. Fill several tags a year.
That's just where you hunt. That isn't a fact either
Yes its all situational to where you hunt and the pressure on that area.Size of property plays in as well .There really is no deer myths to bust just more likely things than others in different areas to different hunters and different deer .For hunters who hunt more than others they need to do what their highest odds are of taking that target deer where you are at.

Most of my mature bucks come between 9-11am in travel routes with a few right after sunset at food sources.
It's so odd to hear them talking about early season October and here we are in SC on July 25th with the season starting 3 weeks from today (private) and on WMAs on September 15th

I have been wondering does it really matter for the moon phases and certain temperatures? My favorite place to hunt is in Southern Missouri on the Glade top Mountain area. I met an older gentleman on one of my hunts, where he showed up, took a look at the map I had made, and he laid out his plan to me. He got on his side by side and took off. As I was hanging my 6 point in my campsite he pulled up with this huge 12 point in the bucket of his ATV.. He said he made it to his spot, got out and within 20 minutes the buck stood up and moved 10 feet, and he shot him. Mind you I had been at camp for 5 days without seeing anything. I wasn't mad he just pulled up, unloaded his atv and basically headed out without any scouting or anything just looking at a map. I even helped him process his monster buck. In all that, I learned a lot from him as we dealt with the deer and his main points were water, forage and possible bedding areas. He was an older gentleman so that info stays with me all the time.
Myth #2 is very much location dependent. My property has essentially no morning movement till first cold snap in October.
A lot of these myths are true on private land mountain country.
Exactly its all situational .In the farm country or broken wood lots and creek lines of the midwest if you go stomping in there in the October mornings you are just likely stomping your deer out ahead of you .Evening is king on or near food sources in October and levels the playing field some for hunters . Bucks around here bed in or next to the food sources so are likely on the edge or in the food in the mornings its all about them eating and putting on weight i October .Its just common sense for people who do not hunt larger public properties .

I usually use a 130 gr soft point jacketed out of a 270 but last year I went with a different caliber and a 123 gr fmj. Had a deer come very close to my stand probably 30-40 yards. My shot placement was a bit back from the shoulder. The projectile sliced cleanly though and didn’t hit a rib on either side but jellied the liver. The enter and exit showed no blood. I watched the deer lay down on a tree line about 30 yards from where it was hit. I’m so thankful that I didn’t have to look for that deer and it didn’t make it into the thick oak shinery that it was headed towards. Definitely not taking that chance again the 270 it is for me.
The only thing I would agree with on the “nocturnal buck” idea is they might be nocturnal on your property. It’s a tough deal for small property owners but that’s when you just wait on the rut and get them at noon.
For a small property it’s all about persistence and commitment at the right time.
And I say this from observations on an 11 acre property the next county south of the Mississippi State deer lab back in high school (hail state!😊).
What I’m seeing as a common bedding area, are areas with less TREES! Them dang deer done figured out we huntin outta trees 😂
To all the southern hunters that are saying bedding areas are a myth-they are absolutely not a myth. For context I hunt hill country in GA. Yes, they are not as easy to find as in the Midwest. But if you map scouting AND with boots on the ground scouting, you can absolutely find them. If you are having trouble finding them, my recommendation would be to post season scout and walk as much ground as you can. Bedding areas are ever changing due to food source and vary depending on time of year, which is what THP talks about in their videos and podcasts. So yes, we do have bedding areas here, you just haven’t found them yet
I live in Central Alabama and all I hunt is bedding areas, it's the easiest way to catch them coming to a food source early in the season and the best place to catch bucks cruising during the rut. Finding bedding isn't the hard part, Finding the right bedding area that you can get to on the right days are few an far between though.
I think your boots on the ground statement is absolutely correct!! Now a days people just want to look at maps and a map doesn't show you what you need to know. Also I tell guys all the time they need to scout in January and February, it will show them where bucks will be during hunting season. So many guys see deer in fields and think that's where the deer are, but as you know they ain't. Good luck this season 👍

A lot of my fellow hunters in the south have no clue how to recognize bedding areas. They just think anything thick is bedding and are confused by the lack of sign to confirm that theory. Where I hunt, deer like ground shielding and visibility down wind to bed. That means the bed on the edges of hardwoods and swamps, not out in the middle of a clear cut.

Just to be clear... just because an animal doesn't cease to exist during daylight hours does not mean he is not nocturnal. All animals get up and move all day. Nocturnal refers to the necessary requirements of life being satisfied during the night. Which many bucks do qualify as nocturnal meaning getting water and calories during the night.

@maxflash2020 just because these youtubers killed a deer... does not mean that there are not deer that are nocturnal. Right? Listen, these guys have tags in over 10 different states and hunt over 100 days a season. I would hope to the good lord they are able to find a deer to kill. If they couldn't, that would be embarrassing.
No… Nocturnal means only moving during night time hours. Active at night.

I've taken 5 deer in the last 3 year's. 2 of which are both 10 points. One is just over 152 and the other is just over 165 and all 5 was taken in the 1st week of opening of bow in southeast ohio. Real close to Bur Oak State Park. Also I took them all from the ground in a leaf suite but one. And she was got from a ground blind

Blood trail is so true, I double lunged a buck with a 30-06 a few years ago and barely any blood despite a large bullet and lethal shot placement

Many of our deer ( most) are nocturnal due to a lot of chopper hunting in the 70s and 80s. Obviously in winter they stay put at night and move during warmth of the day ( but not far) we can hunt deer all year round

And like your last myth, I dropped a deer in 70yds with no blood trail. Luckily my video footage helped confirm the shot and direction she ran off.

Hunt in the woods in Central NC for over 40yrs. Killed some nice bucks at dawn and dusk, but MOST nice bucks seen between 9:45 and 11:30AM !! Seems the bucks get up then and cruise around looking for doe groups. If they find a doe, they jump them and scent check them to see if in heat. As an older guy told me long ago, Keep Shooting till they stop wiggling! I have not on a couple times and has cost me!
Do you see deer move beds from next to ag fields and travel as far as a mile to bed in a river bottom about a half mile away? I have this spot on public I have hunted for several years now and there is a couple of trails that I repeatedly see deer traveling to bed near that river later in the morning.

Years ago my dad and I were looking for a buck from a deer drive (rifle); we searched around for 1/2 an hour, never found a drop of blood. Went back to look 1 more time just before dark & found him under a bush by sight, maybe a 100 yards from the last sighting. It was a liver shot & even after finding him, there was no visible sign of blood anywhere. You hunt long enough, you're going to lose an animal, even if you don't know it. Just take your best shot and search hard, it's all you can do.
I’ve had bucks lay down under me at all different times. If they feel safe they are going to do whatever they feel like at the moment

The “feed 5 times a day” stat is also a myth. I’ve had deer coming to feed every 2 - 3 hours all day and night.
Their natural cycle is 5 times a day if undisturbed. Dumping a pile of feed, especially in an area with lower concentrations of natural food will change things.

For bedding area we have palmettos that are so thick you can’t walk through them and that’s what the deer bed in around us I personally have walked up on deer beds with hair in them from the deer etc, the problem is it’s not patches of bedding area it’s 80,000 acres worth of these palmettos, so don’t recommended walking creeks, picking acorns trees or just simply waking in the middle of these palmettos to set up for these bucks

I have hunted one property and all my pictures were at 1am to 4am and I never got any pictures during the day. I only saw does during the day time. I never shot a deer off that property.

Don't hunt mornings in the early seasons one of the biggest ones. Our bow season opens first Friday of September and last year I saw more deer in the mornings of September than I'd ever seen any other time. Both bucks and does were moving off the ag coming into the big woods and feeding on the acorns that were dropping. Hunt when you can boys
My first bow hunt I hit a doe in the front chest/brisket. I thought I smoked her because of the kick. It was it was almost dusk so we waited till morning (private land), shot another deer found the first arrow and it had no blood but a lot of hair. Dad jump her from her bed when we when tracking and put in a follow up.
I’ve always looked at the tail spinning or flicking radically. That’s how I’ve always know I got it.

I just started hunting with a compound this year and i am shooting a 300 spine arrow with a 100 grain tip and im looking for a good broad head recommendation my bow is set at 53 pounds at 31 inches i know it all depends on how my bow shoots but im just looking for a good sharp and strong broad head for whitetail
Fixed blades will be your strongest. What I didn't like was having to retune my bow from practice to hunting. I use Rage, tried a few others but always went back to Rage. Main thing is patience in waiting for broadside shot, having yardage correct and shot placement. There are a lot of other good broad heads, Sever, Grim Reaper, Schwacker, Megameat, etc. It's more of a preference and confidence level in what you use. The only time Rage has failed was from a shoulder hit. I blame myself for that and not the broad head.
On the mule kick, I sadly gut shot my 2nd buck I’d ever shot. The deer mule kicked harder than I’ve ever seen then peeled out. Never found him but saw his guts hanging so I know sadly he passed.

Saying they are nocturnal definitely applies to “huntablity” if he only moves 50 yards in around his bed how the hell are you suppose to get close enough with a bow. That’s not a myth!
Bingo large public ground hunting with many parceles is way different than hunting small private pieces as well .Burning out your 1 or 2 smaller private spots is not an option just to get close top a bedded buck in October ,
That is the myth. They move a lot more than 50 yards.
@@Huntoutdoors1Yeah, not every single theory applies to everyone, everywhere. I would not try the bump n dump on my 70 acre property... but, they're still valid tools to know to understand movement and build a strategy.

Only thing I have associated with Myth #4 is a Mule kick typically means the arrow or bullet has made contact with the animal. When my wife shot at her first deer we watched her mule kick. I dropped her before she had a chance to cross the property line. When we looked the deer over I found a graze on the back of the front leg that just took off some skin. bullet clipped the leg and had gone right under her.

I don’t believe the first two are myths for older bucks. My average buck age has increased significantly since becoming more cognizant of the first two concepts and how not being careful with the second myth actually ends up causing the first.
Exactly when you hunt one or two smaller pieces of private ground its easy to cause nocturnal bucks and to bust it out and ruin it early with bedding area pressure .When you hunt public and bust it up you just move on to the next place or property . Caution by hunters kills more bucks than aggression does in early season.

Watched for years, love you guys and your content. But Warb , the first myth was about going nocturnal! Then later you mentioned that deer not going nocturnal after you bumped him, and shot him the next day! Lol. What do you mean about nocturnal then?
